campaign. what did we learn, america? that's where we start. good morning, everybody. i'm bill hemmer, thursday. it is getting chilly in the city and getting close to the big day. >> dana: i'll have to pull out the cashmere. i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." we're thrilled to be with you today. 19 days to go. candidates are back on the trail after dueling appearances on fox news. >> bill: bret pleaseing the vp on tough questions and how she would chart a new path forward of the biden administration, which she is a big part. here is how she answered it last night. >> several people tell the country is on the wrong track. they say the country is on the wrong track. if it's on the wrong track, that track follows 3 1/2 years of you being vice president and president biden being president. that is what they're saying, 79%. if you are turning the page, you have been in office for 3 1/2 years. >> and donald trump has been running for office for --

>> you have been the person holding the office, madam vice president. >> you and i both know what i'm talking about. >> i actually don't. >> dana: it shows former president trump with an edge nationwide after a fox news town hall where he didn't mince words. watch here. >> she is the worst vice president and destroying our country. i don't want to use destroyed, that makes it sound like it can't come back but it is awfully close. she is the worst. >> dana: team fox coverage. bret baier is standing by. let's go to mark meredith in lacrosse, wisconsin where vice president harris is campaigning this afternoon. good morning. >> dana, good morning to you. vice president harris spent a lot of time in her fox news interview talking about former president trump calling him unstable and dangerous. the latest sign the democrats are trying to contrast her candidacy with his. voters say the number one issue on their minds this morning the economy. the issue above all else. the economy ranks as the top
6:03 am
issue followed by immigration and abortion. last night bret baier pressed the vice president to explain why people should see her as a fresh start. >> so you are not joe biden, not donald trump but nothing comes to mind that you would do differently? >> let me be very clear my presidency will not be a continuation of joe biden's presidency and like every new president that comes in to office, i will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences, and fresh and new ideas. >> speaking of president biden, harris faced questions about her relationship with her boss and whether or not he still is fit for the job at age 81. >> when did you first notice that president biden's mental faculties appeared diminished? >> joe biden i have watched from the oval office to the situation room and he has the judgment and

the experience to do exactly what he has done in making very important decisions on behalf of the american people. >> no concerns? >> bret, joe biden is not on the ballot and donald trump -- donald trump is. >> i understand. >> when it came to policy bret pressed her about border security asking her why so many migrants have been able to reach the u.s. since january of 2021. she said she would truly change the system that she believes has been broken for years. >> this election in 20 days will determine whether we have a president of the united states who actually cares more about fixing a problem even if it is not to their political advantage in an election. >> this interview was seen by a lot of people all over the world. one person we also know who was watching was former president trump. he said online that harris had trump derangement syndrome after
6:05 am
watching many of those clips and his campaign has been trying to use those clips to their advantage. we'll see if the vice president fires back. she will be on the college campus in lacrosse this afternoon. >> dana: mark meredith, thank you. >> bill: a big moment for the campaign and man of the hour joins us now. bret, good morning and thank you for your time this morning. you have had 15 hours now to marinate over this. what did you think about how it went? >> you know, guys, good morning. i left there right after the interview and i thought wow, this was really a lot more contentious than i thought. there was a lot of filibustering. i didn't want to keep interrupting. if i didn't i thought there would be four answers total in the interview. and i think i came away with there were moments that clearly she prepared for that i think she wanted to have the viral moment and she got it and i think her campaign was happy with that. i think there were things that mark played and some other
6:06 am
moments where i think a lot of people looking back at the transcript will say wow, that's interesting. it is newsy but not what she usually answers. >> dana: one of the things you talked about at some length was immigration. if you pull up call for number one. this is about her reaction, the biden-harris reaction, to migrant crime. >> let me just say first of all, those are tragic cases. there is no question about that. >> so do you owe them an apology is what i'm saying? >> i will tell you that i'm so sorry for her loss. so sorry for her loss, sincerely, but let's talk about what is happening right now with an individual who does not want to participate in solutions. let's talk about that as well. >> do you want to answer? >> i told you, i feel awful for what she and her family have experienced. >> dana: one thing i noticed she
6:07 am
didn't seem to have a way to say so here is what i'm going to do differently going forward. an opportunity to do that. it could have been an opportunity missed. >> yeah, listen, dana, that's the key thing about immigration is that the 94 executive orders that were rescinded in the first days of the biden-harris administration, they opened the door and took away the catch and release, took away remain in mexico. that's the whole thing. she wants to talk about this bill they dropped first which was an amnesty bill to path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the first days that had no chance. the white house -- the democrats had the white house, house and senate and they didn't bring it up or push it. the second bill she talks about right away is the comprehensive bipartisan bill that had six democrats that voted against it and, you know, yes, donald trump maybe lobbied against it but there were also problems with that. and in between those 3 1/2 years
6:08 am
was things that could have happened and we talked about that many times and that's what i was trying to get to. >> dana: and then you did press her on the fact that the american people say that 79% of the country think it's on the wrong track. she tried to say but that's because trump has been running for eight years. what did you make of it? >> i thought it was interesting. she came back to donald trump. i think maybe 15 or 20 times in the interview and that one was really interesting because i was talking about the wrong track and she said you know what i'm talking about and i actually didn't. i just said, i actually don't know what you are talking about. i think that was an interesting moment. she kept on going back to donald trump who hasn't been in office for the last 3 1/2 years. >> dana: for those that didn't see last night, bret, you explained they got there a little late and tried to cut it off so that's why you were sort of rushing at the end to let it come to a close. >> it was a quick dismount
6:09 am
because i had a lot of people wrapping me doing the big wrap. i'm grateful they came on and dealing with the harris people has been fun. it was a little tense because we had a time deadline and it started later and originally we had 25, 30 minutes and then 20 minutes. they were watching the clock and so we had to speed things up at the end. >> dana: bret, mr. gracious bare. i'm sure everyone will be talking about it. >> bill: in the middle of that interview, dana, our fox polling group came out with a brand-new poll. overall nationally they have kamala harris at 48 and we have trump at 50. that's a flip now from where it was previously. in the seven battleground states, however, we've got trump at 46 and harris with a six point lead at 52. is this the way it's going to
6:10 am
do? the trump driving up his numbers where he was getting votes in prior elections and not necessarily getting the votes in the states he needs? maybe. that's one look. another look over here. talking about the seven battleground states. what we want to do today is take the -- everything is so close, right? take the logic and flip it on its head, turn it around 180 degrees. upper midwest the states, the blue wall wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania, that's where kamala harris wants to turn the trick to get to 270. what if that senate race in wisconsin is as close as it suggests over the past two weeks? maybe trump is doing better in wisconsin. what would happen with 219 and 225. take him to 229. maybe the senate race in michigan is tighter. maybe the arab american and union vote has an effect on trump's number in michigan. for the sake of this exercise today we'll give him michigan.
6:11 am
he won in 2016 after all. maybe in pennsylvania. perhaps they could go for blue collar scranton joe but not kamala from california. maybe pennsylvania goes for trump. look where that goes. 263. now let's twist it around in the southeast. maybe the shift in georgia since covid is more significant than the pollsters understand. all those 26 metro counties around atlanta are bluer now than 2020. what would happen in harris wins in georgia and places like greensboro and raleigh and charlotte, north carolina. if she flips north carolina she would be in 257. then we shift our attention to the southwest. arizona did -- what if he wins
6:12 am
arizona? enough to give him the presidency in 2024. i'll take it off for the purpose of this exercise and give arizona to kamala harris. that would not be enough. nevada would. let's come back to the midwest a little bit. nebraska two we believe in omaha it will be blue. that would put her exactly at 269 electoral votes which would leave the silver state of nevada enough to put this at 269/269. it is not out of the possibility that this could happen on election night. go back over here and talk more about it. >> dana: when you lie your head down at night, are you doing that in your sleep? >> i want to say no. >> dana: it's really interesting to play with the map like that and see what could we be doing election night? >> bill: early voting in georgia, are they giving us
6:13 am
clues? 48 hours into it. there are clues out there but inconclusive. we talked about the senate races in the upper midwest and they surprised us. rodgers and hovde are gaining. if their boat is rising, then trump's boat must be rising as well. something to think about. >> dana: one other poll from last night. fox news poll on percent saying yes, okay? in terms of honest and trustworthy. kamala harris 48, harris 47, trump 55 strong leader. up to the job of president, 50 for harris and 53 for trump. mental soundness, i call it a tie. new numbers and lots of fun. >> bill: we'll get back to that in moments. breaking news that may be happening right now in the middle east and it could be significant. >> dana: right before the show it could be that israel's military is looking into whether the top leader of hamas, sinwar,
6:14 am
responsible for october 7th and many other atrocities, may have been killed in a military operation in gaza. we're checking into this. this would be really big news. we have a great guest coming up on it that's already booked for us and we're in luck. >> bill: remember now, sinwar and the history he has with the idf and israeli government. a man who was under arrest and in prison in an israeli jail. he had a brain condition. israeli doctors saved his life. while he was in prison he learned to speak hebrew perfectly. in 2006 there was a war between hezbollah and the israelis and it was all over one captive israeli soldier. the israelis years later traded at least 1,000 inmates for the soldier's release out of gaza. sinwar was one of them. he goes on to become a leader within hamas leadership in gaza. he is believed to be the
6:15 am
mastermind of october 7th. the israelis and idf have been going through the tunnels trying to find him. it was about a month ago when he made the request for a peace deal that would give him safe passage to qatar and spare his life. that was not accepted. >> dana: the lives of so many were not spared because of him and matt finn is in tel aviv and matt, do you have anything on the latest development possibly? >> well, i can at least set the scene in tel aviv. today is a jewish holiday. the streets are quiet. people have been reflecting across this city. the news, this information is spreading rather quickly across tel aviv. the idf has released a statement saying the recent strikes in gaza have killed three people. one may include sinwar, the head of hamas, and the so-called mastermind of the october 7th attacks. this is something israel has been trying to -- a person
6:16 am
israel has been trying to get since the very beginning. this person has proved to be very elusive and the news breaking across israel right now. the hope is perhaps this elimination could potentially lead to some type of end to this war possible cease-fire and to set the stage for you here in tel aviv over the past couple days there has been anticipation building for a potential large-scale military strike by israel against iran in retaliation for the october 1st missile strike in israel that aired live on fox. a horrifying moment, hundreds of rockets launched into israel and since that time, prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed iran will pay for the strike. here on the streets people have been waiting to see what the strike may look like. local israel reports have indicated that israel has been ready to launch a wider scale attack allegedly the sites have determined and it is only a

matter of time. now we have this news break and it is very significant and something spreading rapidly in tel aviv. back to you. >> dana: thank you so much. we'll follow the breaking news and find out. >> bill: if it's true, what a change it could be. more breaking news. bombshell new report revealing the secret service is not performing at the most elite levels. another assassination attempt, some believe, on the president could happen again. we'll tell you what's in that report coming up. >> dana: an f.b.i. data revisions casts doubts that violent crime is down. >> the f.b.i. looks like just released some updated crime numbers which suggested crime was higher than they previously let on in 2022. i'm shocked by that. just kidding.
6:23 am
>> bill: breaking news on the secret service. independent panel of four just released a 52-page report on the first attempted assassination attempt on donald trump in butler, pennsylvania, in july. more than three months later now. letter to dhs secretary mayorkas. that panel calls for a major overhaul writing that the secret service as an agency requires fundamental reform to carry out its mission. without that reform they believe another butler can and will happen again. that ain't good. want to bring in trey gowdy host of sunday night in america. former federal prosecutor. good morning to you. what's the problem with the secret service? why can't we get it right? why has it been systemic for years, as you noted when you were in congress? >> everything from recruitment to training to being viewed as something of a stepchild within
6:24 am
dhs. way back when they were under treasury. i think what your viewers don't know, all our federal law enforcement agencies are all under different departments. there is no commonality. in fact, it is worse than that. it is bickering and fighting. fighting over money. so at some point we have to admit that moving them from treasury to dhs was a major mistake. they have a tough job. 99 is a failing grade if you are a secret service agent. even in the last week i have been with former trump officials who will be under threat for the rest of their life, bill. for the rest of their lives. usually from iran they will be under threat. there is 0 margin for error. we did not need a report to tell us butler, pennsylvania was a failure. i'm glad they did one but we didn't need that. they need to move these agencies under one umbrella and sole objective should be excellence.
6:25 am
>> bill: the secret service does not perform at the elite levels needed. the secret service has become bureaucratic, complacent and static even those risks multiplied and technology involved directed toward mayorkas. after the border and this, how does he still have a job? >> well, the house's defense they tried to impeach him. i don't think they would have done well with a jury. people fail up in government. that's why. he did a bad job with his last job so let's promote him to this. he is a political crony. which gets to my point. i understand politics. when it comes to life and death, when you tell people there is going to be another butler, pennsylvania, that ain't politics, bill. that's someone's life. law enforcement and politics should not mix together. put them under one agency, get rid of this competition, get somebody competent. you and i don't have time to talk about the f.b.i. but they've been getting lots of

stuff wrong, too. public safety is number one priority. if your dead nothing else matters. public safety, number one. >> bill: 99 is a failing grade. i don't know why we don't know more about this teenage shooter in butler, if it's true he was corresponding with encrypted apps from overseas, where were they and who were they? the trump team said iran is still trying to kill our guy and we need a military outfited plane to get around this country to make sure it doesn't happen yet again. when you think about that iran threat. president biden was asked about it and he said if trump wants it, he will get it. i don't know if it's happened just yet, trey. last comment. >> it is not just trump. i have friends that you can't hug them when you see them because they're surrounded by security detail because of iran and yet you have presidential

6:34 am
i want to play one more thing. she talked -- call for number one. harris's point about trump's political opponents. watch. >> he has talked about turning the american military on the american people. talked about going after people who are engaged in peaceful protests. he has talked about locking people up because they disagree with him. this is a democracy and in a democracy, the president of the united states in the united states of america should be willing to be able to handle criticism. >> dana: that was one of the most heated moments in the interview she got. how would president trump respond to that if we were having a debate? >> well, she is talking about somebody unable to handle criticism. there is a highlight reel there. people tuned in too see why it is she wants to be president.
6:35 am
she can't. that's what people came away with. everybody wants to talk about the tone of it and what was the construct of the interview and why did she come into fox news in the first place. that's missing the point. one of the key points in that whole conversation last night and bret did a great job was when he pointed out hey, 79% of americans think the country is on the wrong track. she says oh yeah, but donald trump is running for office again and we want to turn the page. she has no answer for hey, you've been in the white house for almost four years now. what are youo do different about this? she has no answer and i think that's what people saw. >> bill: on the right track wrong track question, a good exchange. here is another question about your pocketbook and finances. watch. >> why do you think more people say they trust him on the economy than you? >> it has been clear to those who study and understand how economic policy works. moving forward. i believe the american people are ready to turn the page on
6:36 am
the divisiveness. they want a president with a plan for the future and that's sound and will strengthen our country. my plan for the economy does exactly that. >> bill: what viewers didn't get in that 25 minutes last night is the details of her plan. she doesn't have to go in depth on it but an idea here and there might help as opposed to pivoting to the page on the divisiveness in america on behalf of donald trump. i just think the voter did not get a lot of detail on that front. i imagine her campaign would want to give a better answer. >> you would think when we're 19 days left before the election she would have an answer what her plans for the country are. that's the point of her whole campaign. they were hoping to ride this joy vibe all the way to election day, you know that. she doesn't want to come into fox news and talk to you guys. she is desperate to try to shake things up.
6:37 am
the way it shapes up has always been good for donald trump. people who will vote in this election have lived through boat administrations, the economy was great under donald trump and the world was largely at peace and the border. under biden and harris the border is non-existent and the world is on fire. she has answers for that. the backup quarterback who throws an interception every time she gets in the game and tells the head coach i want to be the starter now. that's not how it works. you have to have a plan and some kind of performance. dana, sorry about the sports analogy. >> dana: i was following. you didn't even have to try out for the job. >> she didn't have to go through try-outs. >> dana: one other thing fox news poll that came out saying if voting now among key groups. i am looking at one number, black voters, kamala harris, 67%, donald trump 29%. as i recall, tim you know the
6:38 am
number, biden won black voters almost 90%. president trump doesn't have to win all the black vote but if he wins enough black voters it could put him over the top in the national popular vote. >> donald trump is doing very well with black and hispanic voters and why you see her aside from what she did last night. it is not base maintenance when she is trying to talk to black or hispanic voters. she is trying to stop core constituencies of the democrat party from fleeing her campaign. there are 40,000 dislikes among his audience versus only 13,000 likes or thumbs up. that's not scientific but shows you even the audience for charlamagne thought harris didn't provide any answers or insight what direction she would take the country. she is losing support from key aspects from the democratic base and bleeding like crazy.

this campaign is in real trouble. >> bill: we'll see whether or not the interview changed her minds. her folks said they like to see her fight and his folks are saying there was no details. maybe it was a push in the end. thank you for coming on. >> you have to provide some details. >> bill: thank you. want to get to early in-person voting now underway in the battleground state of north carolina. we have georgia monday, north carolina, recovery efforts continue because of helene. more than 75 polling locations are open in the 25 counties impacted by the storm in the western part of that state. from asheville dana marie mcnicholl is back on the job and the restoration efforts and what comes from it. good morning. >> good morning, bill. there is a sense of energy here. i'm at a polling site the line wrapped around the building. here in this county that includes asheville there was supposed to be 14 polling sites.

revise violent crime statistics. the reason the stats come from local police departments across the country, some relate to report. what makes this story notable the f.b.i. revised the statistics from a negative crime rate to a positive crime rate. the f.b.i. chose not to make et well-known to the public. we're talking about 2022 violent crime stats. originally the f.b.i. came out with a report indicating the violent crime rate estimate decreased from 2021 to 2022 by 2.1% rounded up. they adjusted the numbers that indicated the violent crime estimate actually increased 4.5%, a significant change. the biden administration, including the department of justice, cited these numbers from the f.b.i. and people thought violent crime decreased from 2021 to 2022. a narrative baked in for many months. we received a lengthy statement from the bureau. i can only read part of it.

new data systems are in place to provide the public with more timely data. monthly data releases to provide an opportunity for consumers to review data based on more timely crime counts with the understanding that data will be continuously updated. as part of this movement the f.b.i. has moved toward automation allowing for past year's estimate to be updated when they were submitted. 2023 shows a decrease in violent crime from 2022 to 2023 by 3.5%. it is possible the bureau will update these numbers once again. officials appear confident it is an accurate picture with new systems and methods in place to release them more timely every month. >> bill: an whoops on that one. a six-point swing. >> dana: new video shows 60 unaccompanied children crossing the border but the people currently in power are placing the blame elsewhere.
