6:01 am
is collapsing before our eyes. nasrallah is gone, his deputy is gone. sinwar is gone and others. >> bill: iran's ring of fire being squeezed and eliminated. the today the israeli prime minister vowing to press forward. the white house may have a different view of that, however, after a year on the hunt the idf finally found and kill hamas' top leader sinwar, the mastermind behind the terror attacks a year ago on the 7th of october. i'm bill hemmer, good morning. you've almost made it. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." before you get there you have to get all this. a lot coming for you. a stunning video that you have to see. it shows the moments before the takedown of the terror chief and an israeli drone flying into a ruined building capturing sinwar's final minutes alive. >> bill: he had been a marked
6:02 am
man since the massacre of more than 1200 israelis. the most deadly day for the jewish people going back to the holocaust. now with his death, what happens next is a wide open question. >> dana: matt finn is live in tel aviv with the latest. there is a lot of it. good morning, matt. >> good morning, dana and bill. in tel aviv when the news of sinwar's death broke people ran into the streets to cheer. yesterday was actually a holy holiday. part of a holy week here. many people were not working yesterday here in israel. they weren't on electronic devices. a day designed to reflect and pray. so you can only imagine how much more welcomed the news was of sinwar's death on an already solemn day. sinwar's death sparked cheers in
6:03 am
israel and renewed hope but mixed with the concern for the remaining 101 hostages in gaza. the drone video shows the final moments of sinwar's life. camouflaged amongst the rubble clinging for life in the chair on the left and flings a stick at the idf drone that is filming this. he was the head of hamas, charismatic leader and mastermind of the october 7th attack. israel's prime minister netanyahu said his image of being a fearless military leader has been shattered. >> residents of gaza, sinwar ruined your lives. he told you he was a lion but in reality he hides in a dark tunnel and he was killed when he ran away in fear from our soldiers. >> sinwar's death begs the question of what will happen
6:04 am
next. hamas just responded saying it won't be stopped. releasing a statement reading, it seems that israel believes that killing our leaders means the end of our movement and the struggle of the palestinian people. we believe that our destiny is one of two good things, either victory or martyrdom. president biden had a phone call with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahue and now urged the prime minister to end this war. there is a lot of talk on the streets in tel aviv what's next for this war. of course, those remaining hostages. dana and bill. >> dana: the hostages top of mind. >> bill: i watched this thing 20 times. it is remarkable stuff. the drone goes into this area in gaza, this building has been devastated, entire holes blown out of the wall. they said it was on the ground floor. looks like floor number two and perhaps ground floor in this situation was a little higher elevated.
6:05 am
but that is sinwar. he blends in with the seat, doesn't he? he is wearing the same colors and he is also wearing a headdress over his head with only his eyes exposed. clearly trying to hide from the idf. we're told a group of trainees from the idf were working a regular patrol through southern gaza and came across a group of what they considered to be the other side. they opened fire. the men split up and at least one of the individuals who they believe was sinwar ran into the building. remarkable, they take a drone with a camera and they are feeding this back to headquarters in tel aviv or jerusalem and they fly into this room and there he is sitting there missing an arm on his right side. his left hand is holding something described as a stick. hard to say and when that drone goes in the building you can see the dust on the floor puff and move away. it is dramatic stuff. he knows he is cornered and been
6:06 am
caught and slings the stick toward the drone and the drone turns away for a second and that's where the video stops. from that let's go back to the board here and let's talk about this area. this is gaza. so disputed now from the white house all the way to jerusalem. netanyahu and joe biden have different ideas, kamala harris does, too, about what should happen next. population centers, gaza city, now here the philadelphia corridor is rafah. that's the area where sinwar was nabbed yesterday. they thought he would be in a tunnel and take refuge and shielding from some hostages. maybe he has done that for the past year. yesterday that wasn't the case. the corridor strongly disputed between hamas and also israel. the israelis believe under the corridor is where the tunnels have been built that come in from sinai and egypt and feed
6:07 am
hamas and its military weapons. let's go forward one more time. the town, the neighborhood where they caught him where these idf trainees were on a routine patrol as they described it. it is the big picture. six weeks now, okay? you have nasrallah taken out the end of september in beirut and now you have sinwar eliminated mid october in southern gaza. something else. what's next? john ratcliffe might be able to answer that, former director of national intelligence. what is next? what's the best next move for israel and the people in this region? >> well, bill, you highlighted the incredible success that israel has had in taking out the top leadership of both hezbollah and hamas. this is the real coup, the most significant and important for a number of reasons in taking out sinwar. first there is a strategic value of removing someone who has been the mastermind of so many
6:08 am
different terror activities by hamas including october 7th. but then also the symbolic value. sinwar has been the face of hamas for decades now and so to remove him sends a message. i guess finally maybe most importantly at this point in time, it has been well understood that sinwar has been the primary impediment to any further deal in getting the hostages home. with him removed it opens it up as a possibility. in terms of what's next for the israelis is they understand -- and i think netanyahu said it -- it's the beginning of the end of the war, not the end of the war. and anything that happens at this point that is successful, let's say a hostage deal, is going to be because israel pursued a peace through strength, because they escalated to de-escalate and they didn't listen to joe biden and didn't listen to kamala harris and others who said it would be a huge mistake to go into rafah.
6:09 am
obviously had the israelis listened to biden/harris and our entire national security team, sinwar would be alive, nasrallah would be alive and israel would be on defense and iran would still be on offense. so i think the israelis know what they are going to do. unfortunately the united states should be doing it with them and there is no indication that that's what's taking place. >> dana: vice president kamala harris a little while ago said she looked at the map and the map showed that it would be a terrible mistake to move forward. here she is on march 24th interview with abc news. watch. >> we have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in rafah would be a huge mistake. >> dana: the israelis decided they had to continue forward to protect their citizens and there
6:10 am
are palestinians who are i've been reading some of the commentary today are saying hamas and sinwar brought this war upon us and maybe they could see a new way forward as well. >> yeah, i think what kamala harris said really demonstrates why she has been wrong and why the biden-harris administration has been wrong throughout the last four years and before that barack obama. look, this is the obama doctrine. those national security folks who think escalation is a bad word or a bad thing and they constantly preach restraint, without understanding what escalation has done and what the israelis have done, is escalate to de-escalate. in so doing what they've demonstrated is their will and resolve and they have also demonstrated their capacity and their capabilities to strike their adversaries and that is what is creating these opportunities. this is what has iran on its
6:11 am
back foot and hamas and hezbollah facing decembermation. again, i think this is at the end of the day i think it is as important as the way it's playing out and the israelis understand there is an opportunity here to, you know, end some of these terror networks completely that have created so much chaos for so long. i think they will continue. look, there are thousands of hamas fighters still there. they don't have the leadership they had but the israelis understand they still have to continue to clear out gaza if they want to have any opportunity for palestinians to be govened by any other entity centered on the notion israel can't exist and the founding principles and charters of organizations like hamas and hezbollah are the genocide of the israeli people and the jewish state.
6:12 am
so that's what israel is working to remove and having incredible success. again, the united states should be helping them but i think they will be flying solo unless and until donald trump returns to the white house and a different national security team comes in. >> bill: hamas says you have to get out with the idf out of gaza. don't know if that will happen. moments ago from beirut hezbollah putting out a statement mourning the death of sinwar and then john kirby a moment ago at the white house saying we're not in a position at the moment where serious ceas cease-fire notions are in the offing. if hamas demands the israeli military get out netanyahu won't go for that today. thank you, sir, for coming on. john ratcliffe, appreciate it. >> dana: thank you. >> my opponent feels like she does not have to be here, which is deeply disrespectful to the event and in particular to our
