7:32 am
good morning, jackui. >> good morning. president biden always intended to talk about the middle east in his conversations that are still happening right now with the leaders of france, germany and the u.k. they especially want to get to iran supporting russia for its war in ukraine. they sent missiles. that was always supposed to be part of the conversation. talks about the middle east with regard to gaza are a bit more hopeful now after israel eliminated the head of hamas. listen. >> sinwar was the main obstacle to getting a cease-fire done. he would refuse to move forward. his death does provide a unique opportunity to try to take advantage of where we are with hamas, where israel is with hamas and see if we can't get a cease-fire in place. >> the other big focus here is positioning ukraine for success. the german president didn't hide his country's anxiety about the possibility of another trump presidency. there is uncertainty about what future u.s. support for

7:34 am
we cannot -- thank you so much. kind of you. we had a very difficult winter. we cannot let up. >> a little bit of an awkward moment where the president was speaking about the need to support ukraine in the future. it is possibly his last trip to europe as president. a little nostalgia for him coming as zelenskyy is sounding the alarm about north korea sending troops into ukraine on russia's behalf and the dynamic of the war shifting. dana. >> dana: you are in a beautiful city, berlin, indeed. thank you, jackui. >> bill: the death of sinwar sending reverberations throughout the world. how does this change the reality now in the middle east? if it changes it at all. matt miller, state department spokesman with me now. thank you for your time. nice to see you today and good morning. what do you want to see happen
7:35 am
when you know hamas has demanded the israeli military get out of gaza before any hostages have any intent of heading home? >> well, good morning, bill, thank you for having me. let me say first of all the death of yahya sinwar is obviously hugely significant event for the middle east and the united states. someone who had the blood of israeli and american citizens on his hands and more than 30 countries on his hands. the fact he has been brought to justice no longer sits at the top of hamas is a win for the united states and a win for the world and something that the entire world should recognize and applaud. in terms of where we go forward. sinwar was not just the person who made the decision to launch the terror attacks of october 7th. he more than any other person has been t singular obstacle to ending this war in the past few months. so go back to the -- to may when
7:36 am
president biden laid out the proposal to get a cease-fire in gaza to bring all the hostages home, to provide real security for israel. it set off this period of negotiations where we were going back and forth with our partners qatar and egypt to try and bridge the differences between israel and hamas. what we have seen over the past few weeks, over the past little over a month is hamas at sinwar's instigation refusing to even come to the negotiating table to talk about how we can end this war. he has been the chief obstacle to getting an end to the war and getting the hostages home. now that he has been removed from the battlefield we want days and weeks ahead find a way to end this war, bring the hostages home. find a better life for the palestinian people and secure israel. >> bill: two questions. what if the next leader of hamas has the same thoughts of the existence of israel? if that's the case, we're in the
7:37 am
same spot, aren't we? >> so i would certainly -- without making any predictions who the next leader of hamas will be, you can certainly expect that they will be someone committed to the destruction of israel which is why the united states will be committed to holding every hamas terrorist accountable for their actions and support israel. at the same time, sinwar has been such a unique figure inside hamas because he has had control of not just the military wing of hamas but for the past two months also control of the political wing of hamas. so we don't know what will come next. we know the chief obstacle to date has been removed and so this is an opportunity to try and seize the moment and find a way to end this war. find a way to get the hostages home. find a way to provide real security and peace for both israelis and palestinians. >> bill: netanyahu yesterday about the war not over. watch here. >> this is not the end of the war in gaza, it is the beginning
7:38 am
of the end. the axis of terror built by iran is collapsing before our eyes. nasrallah is gone, his deputy is gone, two others and sinwar is gone. >> bill: how vulnerable is iran now with its proxy leaders taken out. >> it is certainly the case iran had a strategy to fund and arm proxy groups around the middle east, not just hamas and hezbollah but also the houthis, as a bull work and deterrent against israel. over the past few months we've seen them systematically degraded. a good thing for stability and security in the middle east. what we want to see is find an end to these conflicts that provide lasting security. not short term security for israel but lasting security for israel and greater stability for the entire region. and that's the work that secretary blinken at the
