arthel: amazon is refusing to back down on the end of its remote work policy. one of the tech giant's top executives reportedly told workers this week they will need to come back to the office full-time starting next week or find a new job at our next guest took his accounting company completely virtual years before the pandemic and now says he regrets it. jean marx writes in an op ed quote yes we are profitable for our overhead is low. my breakeven is manageable but i often wonder how much more profitable we would be if we were not completely virtual? i believe would be coming up with more ideas for helping and billing our clients here he is
1:48 pm
now jean marx. so we know what happened with your company. how do you assess amazon's mandates? i keep telling people that since we have been virtual we have been virtual since 2005 everyone has been working from home before virtual working from home was even known. i always say her company's most dysfunctional company in the world. the overhead is low. but like i wrote about we lack innovation but we lack socialization but we lack teamwork some of the employees do not even know each other. they've never met each other face-to-face. i understand where amazon is coming from. because being a face to face in the office really does have an impact. the thing is most of my clients are not doing that. it may just be a little bit too much to require your employees to be there every day of the week in 2024. arthel: that's an interesting point because amazon web service
1:49 pm
chief executive matt gorman set up their people who just don't work wellin that environment and do not want to, that's okay for their other companies out there. at amazon we want to be in an environment where we are working together and we filled the collaborative environment is incredibly important for our innovation and for our culture. so jean do you think the dynamic in the labor market is changing with employers having more power, then to your point how could this impact the unemployment rate in overall economy? >> it has a big impact on trying to find workers u.s. guinea employers with the top three most requested benefits of course it's health insurance and retirement plans. i'm 2024 it is flexibility. most employees if they can there are some jobs you cannot be flexible. most expect some level of flexibility the ability to work from home. again working one 100% virtual i don't think is a great model. wh41% in the office is so great
1:50 pm
either in 2024. there is a middle ground. the reality is although you and i are trauma amazon because they make all the headlines, most of my clients small midsize businesses even large companies have a hybrid approach they let employees work a couple days from home they do asked him to come in the office. and if he said that two employees back in 2019 before covid, you can work from home a couple days a week and then come in the office, they would have been jumping for joy. so, for the most part it's not a bad plan to be hybrid to get the innovation and that socialization as it is. but get the flexibility to your workers. that's what and sing the most on the workplace. arthel: hybrid does seem to work. everybody focuses on work/life balance. so when you ask if a company like amazon everyone must return to the office, how would that affect americans livelihoods? >> it has a big impact on quality of life.
1:51 pm
we have for generations in the workplace right now and everybody's looking for a good balance. it's not just the younger generations that want to work from home for i had a lunch with a friend of mine he runs a large large national law firm he is the partner in charge. he said the biggest p pushback e gets them coming in the office are some of his senior partners of his firm. people have worked a lot of years and they listen the technology is there we should be able to do work from home at least some of the time. i think the biggest issue facing a lot of my clients is figure out the right work from home policy. some are very it laws a fair in saying take whatever time you want to work from home. it is up to you others have a little bit more requirements that come on and we need you in the office on these days. that's the biggest issue facing players right now is figure out the right combination. arthel: seems like everyone is looking for the combination and hopefully it all works out. we appreciate your advice. take care. >> thanks arthel, take care. >> if you are a major league or
