>> that's a really great question, todd. i'm sure people i talk to will tell you the same thing that you're hearing, which is that it is not safe in austin and that is part of the chick knows coming home to roost because of disastrous changes our city council made in 2020, when they defunded the police department. they cut funds from the department, cut 150 vacant positions from the department and stopped all cadet academies. we have over 500 vacancies. it is my to give support to the police department and ensure they have the tools necessary in order to be able to do their jobs effectively and make sure we're recruiting properly to fill vacancies. >> todd: problem with elections, they come down to math as chad pergram likes to say. you have been redistricted and have a tougher time winning this

time than last time because you have a lot fewer republicans and more democrats now in your district. how do you convince voters to keep you on? >> that's a great question, todd. i'm glad that you asked it, it is one my team worked on for a long time. in my role, i represent the 52% of people who voted for me and 48% that didn't. even though cards seem to be stacked against me, i'm proud to say coalition of democrats that are well known in the city of austin got together and sent a letter to all democrats in my district to support me for reelection. they understand need for a balance on the progressive city council we have. austin american statesman, a very forward-thinking newspaper, they also endorsed my campaign and said i provide value to the council because i provide that opposing viewpoint when needed.

that is good for government. >> todd: that is such an important point you mention and i want to view through the lens of the police shortage you eluded to. number of vacancies increasing by 70 within a year. i hate to take a trip to negative town, what happens if you lose and progressives have no one to stand up to them on that council? >> it is something i've been going out to tell people across the city and it has been a poor message of my campaign. if we lose my voice on the city council, we lose the only voice of conservatives across the entire city of austin. that would be devastating. i fear that we will go back to 2020, when we had all democrat city council and no one challenged what was brought before us, no one brought an opposing viewpoint. i do vote no, i am not afraid to say that. i respectfully bring up a position that has not been

considered yet and sometimes that gives my colleagues a little cover to say, you know what, i had not thought of that, i think i will vote no, too. that is something very important to me. i created postponement to do more study and have more time before we consider such important decisions. for me, coming from public safety background, as volunteer firefighter long time in the city, born and raised in the city of austin. if i lose my city on the council, results could be more devastating. >> todd: you like to say keep austin weird, if you lose, you could turn austin into new york city, that is not a slogan anybody wants. best of luck to you. battling the blue wall, battling for it, democrats reportedly concerned about a crack in the key battleground. talking to life-long michigan democrat who says she does not agree with ump tr's policies,

>> carley: as donald trump wraps up his two-day visit to north carolina, democrats sounding the alarm on kamala harris' chances to win back the state. harris campaign official telling nbc news of all seven states that one seems to be slipping away. voters in the battleground have cast one million votes in early voting despite destruction from hurricane helene. jason simmons is north carolina gop chair and joins me now. thank you for being here. glad to have you on. let's talk about early voting first. what is most significant thing you are seeing with early voting

so far? >> we're continuing to see after the first few days of early voting is strong performance by republicans. republican turnout has been overwhelming and we've seen democratic turnout underperforming, where we see historic norms. people are tired of the last four years, they are ready to close the door to this disastrous administration. >> carley: is that happening in areas hit hard by the storm? >> yeah. so those counties impacted by the hurricane, we continue to see republican turnout stronger than it has been historically, while democratic turnout has been underwhelming in many areas. it is just a really commitment by our voters in western north carolina who have been d devastated and really just, as you have seen over past four years and through the storm, the

lack of response by the federal government, they are frustrated and showing up to voice that frustration. >> carley: lara trump was talking about this on sunday. she used north carolina, very red, hit hard by the storm and said vote totals there are high. can you project what you are seeing now out and make a determination on what this early voting means bh it comes to the outcome of the race or is it too early to tell? >> if we continue to have parity with democrats when we get to election day when we win election day vote over whelmingly, president trump is very well positioned to win north carolina for the third time. >> carley: we showed this report from nbc news and headline says it all, i'm sure deep interest to you. democrats base for possible crack in blue wall and assigns

of north carolina slipping. while north carolina is still in campaign sight and democrats maintain strong leadership there, harris team is far less bullish about victory. former president obama may share that sentiment listen to what he said in wisconsin yesterday. watch this. >> it is going to be tight because a lot of americans are still struggling. as a country, we've been through a lot historic pandemic reeked havoc on communities, families and businesses and disruption from the pandemic caused price hikes, put a strain on family budgets and people started feeling no matter how hard they work, they are tread ing water. i understand why folks are looking to shake things up. what i cannot understand is why anybody would think donald trump would shake things up in a way good for you. >> carley: he said the race was

going to be close because americans are still struggling due to covid and inflation that occurred under joe biden and kamala harris. how do you feel about that as closing message for democrats from somebody who should be the expert messenger coming from the democratic party? >> i think we all echo his sentiment, people are not better off than four years ago under president trump. you have a proven track record with president trump, where you had a strong economy, you had peace in the world and most importantly, you saw the border under control and you didn't have crime and fentanyl pouring over reeking havoc upon our community across north carolina and the country. >> carley: yeah, former president trump just wrapped up a tour of north carolina, in particular areas hit by the form. and former president obama will be in charlotte, north carolina, on friday. we'll see how it plays out. thank you for your time, we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> carley: you're welcome.

todd, over to you. >> todd: not just north carolina, harris campaign concerned about a crack in the blue wall as donald trump sees rise in support from arab americans. chance of carrying battleground michigan, can you believe that? co-founder of arabs for a better america and lifelong democrat, whos she is now voting for trump. we all expected kamala to lose some arab american votes in state of michigan thanks to her connection to biden administration and the war in gaza. i don't think a lot of us, myself included, expected those votes to go to donald trump. how is trump winning over voters including someone like you, who mind you, voted for and wrote in bernie sanders in 2020? >> yeah, i'm still very progressive democrat and there is a lot of kog nizans here.

what people like myself and people in deerborn and michigan are prioritizing human lives being lost as result of the genocide. one thing we will not do, we will not forgive loss of a quarter million children, innocent men, women and children and families torn apart. we cannot erase videos we have seen of burning people, of demolition and destruction. we are looking for hope in somebody who can stand up and stop the war, whether peace through strength or whatever it might be, donald trump has really put in efrt to show he could. i think there has been a really surreal outreach due to efforts of the ambassador in michigan. richard has reached out trying to get somebody like me to

endorse trump and it is bearing fruit. >> todd: to be clear, donald trump has been unequivocal in his support for israel. unequivocal in support for prime minister netanyahu. you say out of all candidates, the one you trust most to lead to peace in the region, to end the war and killing is donald trump. is thatk r accurate? >> yes. i'm going to have to between the choices i have, donald trump is the best choice out of them. i can say right now, what is happening under biden-harris administration is not sustainable. it is not working and escalating and broadening all things democrats have been warning us, don't vote for trump, he might restrict funding for humanitarian aid and they are doing it. he might allow for destruction and they are doing it. he might allow for broadening of

the conflict and they are doing it. deportation of student protesters, they are doing it. when my community is seeing is hypocrisy and lip service, nothing coming out of this except more destruction and death. we want somebody to come in and make changes. whether through strpeace throug strength, comparing apples to apples, look at red line draw by biden and bibi netanyahu entering rafah by biden and bibi did what he needed to do and humi humiliated biden on the world st stage. i can't imagine bibi would do the same thing under trump. if he were, response by our administration would be much different than we saw with biden. >> todd: before we let you go, in the end, will kamala harris' decision to have liz cheney campaign with her in the state

democrat since 2008. that has changed and they are not endorsing kamala harris. the owner of the paper told them not to step in and make an endorsement. what do you think about that? >> joe: i don't think owners should tell editorial boards what to think ever. if they want to make changes, fine, you are owner and deserve to have a say in what goes on. instructing them do not do this, that is stepping offer the line. all of that said, kamala has a problem with endorsements from places democrats get endorsements from. not just l.a. times, the teamsteres or firefighters union won't endorse her. the rank and file of places like united auto workers, mainly in michigan, they are at trump's

administration compared to when donald trump was in office. >> todd: cheryl casone is here with details. cheryl. >> cheryl: this gives insight into why we are seeing momentum for donald trump. job creator network says they have both been in administration and we have numbers to show you numbers under each. look at the numbers, uinflation 7.3 under trump, 20.5% underism ca. wage growth 7.7% under trump, under biden-harris, loss of 2 p 2.2%. higher inflation wages did not keep up. average gasoline prices more than $1 different. and mortgages, she's talking about mortgages and homes for viewers and helping first-time

homebuyers. payments were 1700 under trump and under biden-harris 2750. look at hispanics and black voters, in particular, income of those demographics. for hispanics, growth almost 6500 under trump administration it is just 700 under biden-harris administration. for blacks, 4600 and change under trump and 2650 under the harris-biden administration. this gives you a sense why when you see barack obama and joe biden saying come on, what is wrong with you and why aren't you backing kamala harris. this is why. this is why we're seeing -- >> carley: so true. obama was on the campaign trail yesterday and said americans are still struggling. he's right and these numbers prove it. that is not the message kamala

any country that allowing biological men to compete in women's sports is allowing violence against women. what do you think about this? >> i think this is huge as you said especially coming from the u.n. especially off the coat tails of the olympic games whereby we saw two athletes previously banned for failing sex eligibility requirements of having two x chromosomes in a boxing ring winning gold medals in fights against women. so, this is huge. what we know, what has been reported thus far there are 717 female athletes a total of 1,055 medals that have been stolen over 522 competition across 37 different sports. again, carley that, is just the number that has been reported and accounted for. but, honestly, can i tell you something? this number, this alarming shockingly high number really doesn't mean much to me in terms of how inclined i feel to fight this fight and to push back.
