breaking news in the middle east where the sun is about to rise and israel's retaliation is underway. the chief foreign correspondent is live on what is now early morning in northern israel. what are we learning? >> reporter: good evening. we are learning that tonight israel conducted strikes against targets in iran and we are just getting a statement moments ago from the israeli military indicating those strikes are over there? spokesman says "a short while ago the idf completed precise and targeted strikes against military targets in a number of areas in iran, our planes have safely returned home." these strikes reportedly first targeted air defense systems near the iranian capital of tehran before going after drone and missile production facilities. this was a strike in response to a ballistic missile attack earlier this month that included 180 ballistic missiles being

fired toward israel. in addition to ongoing attacks against israel conducted by iranian proxies across the region. i spoke with a senior official earlier tonight who indicated these strikes were meant to send a message to the iranian regime that these types of attacks would no longer be tolerated by israel. also that official indicated they were looking to contain the situation on the ground and not have this unravel into a broader conflict. as we look forward though, the question is if iran will respond to these strikes. we understand the airspace over iran is closed, at least temporarily, and also iranian officials this morning likely surveying the damage to determine if and how they will respond to these israeli strikes tonight. trace. >> trace: trey yingst, we will get back to you as the news warrants, thank you. let's bring in israeli special ops veteran aaron cohen and a former navy seal who trained with the idf in israel, cameron hamilton, thank you for coming on.

precise strikes, precision strikes, we've heard the phrase used a bunch of times tonight, does that mean that these were not meant to be as cool a tour he? >> well israel is reacting off iran's escalation. iran has been escalating for 12 months against israel. however to your question, these are still selective. israel is focusing primarily on targeting missile batteries, logistical depots and potentially leadership strongholds where the irg see officers are conducting operations and coordinating all of those terror proxies that are attacking israel. however, israel is signaling that they are in control. we can get you selectively, we don't need to destroy your nuclear facilities just yet. i think israel is diverging iran by hitting a couple of different selective places while they cook up the larger magic trick which will be targeted at the

leadership. >> trace: cameron hamilton, going in the door aaron opened, when you hear air defense systems and drone and missile production systems, are you surprised, would you have picked other targets or do you think that is what you initially believed would be hit? >> i think their tactic is appropriate because they are trying to disrupt the infrastructure iran would likely use to target and respond back. iran just a few weeks ago launched 180 ballistic missiles. these are missiles capable of killing tens of thousands of people. quite a reasonable show of force from iran. fortunately they were intercepted by israel. israel's main intent is entering iran does not have the capacity to do that again. what we are seeing here is israel is going after infrastructure that we've allowed the iranian's to procure because of the alleviated sanctions that the united states has had with the iranian government. so terrorism pays and israel is now here to clean up the mess of what we have done to help assist of the iranian's in arming

themselves. >> trace: i wonder about the retaliation from iran's perspective on this. we've seen in recent months that hezbollah and hamas have been decimated by idf, the israeli defense forces. does that give iran pause to come back after israel again? >> i think iran is going to go after israel. it's a good question. i believe that any retaliation israel is anticipating, what iran does next will allow israel to escalate further but continue with the selective operations while they cook up that larger special operation which israel's mossad, who iran is really scared of back the rest of them, that's going to be the real sting. so they are dealing with fear, dealing with infrastructure like cameron just said. israel right now is trying to put those missiles at bay but
