white house thank you. arthel: as a madeline just reported the democrats blame game is in full swing after vice president harris election loss. can the dems take a page out of trump's playback? dr. lauren wright of princeton university political scientist joins us now. hate doctor lauren good to see you as always. first of all let's go here but what let's expound on trump's winning strategy. break it down. how'd he do it? >> there are a lot of mistakes democrats made paid the first thing i will say, arthel, i don't think this is a case where voters love trump, embraced trump he is still disliked by more than half the country consistently in polls. democrats drove those vo away by focusing on this argument about democracy when the majority of republicans thought harris was a threat to democracy. by not focusing on the economy and saying hey, inflation's got a lot better. why are you so upset about this?
11:35 am
there are a lot of reasons why trump was able to build the coalition the crux of it i do think the story is democrats are driving people away. people are rejecting the message and. they rejected the last four years. trumps absolute beatable and democrats did not beat him. work so much as take a look at fox news voter analysis on trump's gains across nearly all demographics. we'll put it up there and tell everybody who is listening, here it goes he is plus three with the women. plus three with t men. plus seven with non- educated demo. he is plus seven with the taino voters he is plus eight with black voters plus 10 with young voters. what takeaways can the democrats and grab it from trump's strategy? >> you think about donald trump and his message is very simple. it has always been immigration for it ever since 2015 whether
11:36 am
you agree with the way he talks about it and its rhetoric or not you know that is his main issue. in his honest business credentials to make this argument which is very easy to make now the inflation and the economy have gotten so out of hand. most voters feel into the biden/harris administration i am going to fix this. when he think of harris candidacy there is no one issue you can point to that really characterizes her race except for i am running a race that i am not donald trump and i'm not joe biden. great, who are you? that's a big problem is largely undefined so voters who might have been open to her did not have an opportunity to cast their ballot for her. they just want to go back to what they see as a time of prosperity and more prosperity during the trump years and i cannot blame them for that. it's a very simple calculation.
11:37 am
>> is there a place were democratic policies in the trump administration? and if so what are they? >> trump is not very ideological. one thing we saw in his first term was criminal justice reform. a lot of people might've been surprised by that but we had celebrities in the white house like kim kardashian pushing that agenda. it makes sense to him and he said okay. foreign policy wise he is out of step with traditional republican values about america's role in the world. we do not know exactly what we will get from a second trump term. i think that is unsettling to a lot of people about what voters clearly sent with their message last week was we are not going to stand for what is happening right now. we feel less safe. we feel like we have less control over our lives and our children we do not feel it would have the same opportunities to get ahead.
11:38 am
>> in what areas should the democrats alter their policy structure? hey in which a policy should they hold firm and protect? the continued analysis we will see. the economic message is pretty much a disaster. i had seen and i've been saying this really tense and biden injected $6 trillion into the economy in the wake of covid. that caused short-term inflation. that is going to be a problem that democrats could not put back in the box so easily. many left-leaning economists of the obama administration said that. that turned out to be the case. people suffered. they went into debt to pay for groceries for basic school supplies, for medical supplies for their families. inflation has improved at two and half% per it is not 9% anymore. that is so out of touch with how
