6:03 am
congress but also because he has been kind of a fire brand from florida as well as serve as the department lead. he will root out systematic corruption and return the department to its mission of fighting crime and upholding our democracy and constitution. now gaetz was under investigation by the house ethics committee looking to whether or not he was part of a scheme tied to the sex trafficking of a minor. gaetz has long denied the allegations. senate will be considering whether to confirm tulsi gabbard from hawaii as director of national intelligence. gabbard telling fox overnight she is expecting an uphill battle for confirmation. >> of course there will be resistance to change from the swamp in washington. i think that's kind of the point. the american people are saying hey, stop looking at yourselves, stop focusing on your own power, position and bank account. >> florida senator marco rubio gaining bipartisan support as
6:04 am
trump's nominee for secretary of state. trump and rubio's relationship has evolved over the years compared to the bitter primary back in 2016. now trump says rubio will be a strong advocate for our nation, a true friend to allies and fareless warrior. he was thankful to be in washington yesterday to sit down with president biden. trump's team saying it was clear to them that change was in the air. still awaiting news on some of those other potential key posts in the upcoming administration, secretary of treasury, commerce, economic team that trump is likely to spend a lot of time focusing on and press secretary. we heard from habba today and says she is no longer in the running. bill. >> bill: we'll take 40. thank you, mark, you look good, too. here is the the house right now over on the board. 218 a simple majority. a lot of races out there.
6:05 am
a couple of them now in california. looks to me it could be a split decision. you have a district just below sacramento where the democrat holds the lead and below that another race in california in the valley where the republican holds the lead. if that holds up it would be a split. in alaska it takes a long time to count votes there. rank choice voting across the state. one district that covers all of alaska and right now we see a republican with about -- a lot of the vote is in now with a comfortable 3.2% lead. if that holds up the republican goes to washington. back in the state of ohio republicans have been trying to split this district for a long time and they have failed repeatedly. this is congressional district nine along lake erie. the democrat continues to win. she has a slight lead at.3%. 218 is the margin.
6:06 am
how much higher that goes remains to be seen. we'll get to that with chad pergram as the nitty-gritty of governing comes in tune. good morning on the hill. >> good morning and happy 39th. gop hat-trick, a new house majority, another slim majority after republican held his seat in arizona overnight. it gives the gop218 seats, nine races remain uncalled to hold the majority bacon had to win in nebraska. >> i personally most of the people would like a majority to vacate the chair but with a four-seat majority you take the win that you can. >> the gop ranks could dwindle. matt gaetz is resigning, president-elect trump picked him for attorney general. stefanik and waltz are leaving.
6:07 am
republicans can't hold the majority with too many vacancies. >> matt's resignation was to help us. it starts the clock about an eight-week process to fill that seat. if we do this quickly and i've already called governor desantis to ask him to kick start this thing we could have the seat filled by january 3rd. one seat replaced almost immediately. >> democrats are suspect of many of mr. trump's pick for his cabinet and republicans are careful what they say even though some have reservations. >> we allow the president to have the benefit of the doubt. we still have to do our role in terms of due diligence. >> house speaker mike johnson will hold the gavel next year. house republicans agreed to a rules change. they would raise the bar to oust the speaker from one member to nine members. it was gaetz who moved to oust kevin mccarthy last year.

>> bill: bill mcgurn is here. good morning to you. thanks for being here. speaker johnson last night with sean. check this out. >> the atmosphere on the hill is one of euphoria. the republican party is united and energized like i've never seen it. i called leader thune today and congratulated him on his victory and talked for a period of time about the agenda going forward and do it in a bi cam rail fashion. we need house and senate republicans to be in lock step. >> bill: will they do well or screw it up? >> we don't know yet. they have the votes now having both houses. if they implement their agenda i think like the border bill would be something they could do to show what is different from last four years. they can get a lot done. i worry they will get in battles over some of the nominees and president-elect trump's promise or call to recess bid for

appointments. that would end up in needless fights. >> dana: also they have the votes. >> you don't need it. >> dana: democrats are still reeling and axios has the headlines. jeffries tells house democrats he owns the 2024 loss and you have a piece today in the "wall street journal" -- yesterday, that says democrats religion, party elites treat trump votes as a -- >> what i mean is when reagan won re-election in 1984. he lost only d.c. and minnesota, right? some democrats led by the democratic leadership counsel moderated the democratic views. bill clinton was their chairman and elected on a more moderate platform. and that, you know, that considered economic growth good, defense good, safe legal and rare for abortion.

i have think the problem today is that it's not just -- you can't just tweak economic policy to make -- to moderate the democrats. it is like a religion to them. it gives meaning, d.e.i., all the stuff, environment is like a faith. i think people give up the faith very reluctantly. so i think it will be very hard to reform because that is the animating spirit. >> bill: indeed. accused of losing their religion you could say. i thought yesterday between the president's biden and president-elect was a great day for america. i thought president biden was very welcoming. let's play a clip now that we watched together. >> look forward to having a smooth transition, do everything we can to make sure you are accommodated what you need. >> politics is tough and in many cases not a nice world but it is a nice world today and i appreciate very much a

maybe for atmosphere they thought it would look good but it was like -- it was so loud and that wood was dry as a bone. >> didn't your office have a fireplace? >> dana: yes, the press secretaries did. >> we didn't. we were told to freeze. >> dana: sometimes it would be lit for me at 6:15 in the morning. it's wood. >> bill: nothing fake. no fire starter. bill, thank you. go to speaker of the house right now mike johnson on the hill. see what he is saying. >> trump's administration timing than anything else. >> shouldn't we have -- should be a charge -- >> it is the president's decision. matt is a colleague and he is someone who has worked hard against the weaponization of government and lawfare. instant reformer if given the position and understand the pick. thank you. >> did you talk to desantis this
6:13 am
morning? thank you. >> bill: plenty of questions. >> dana: one of the reasons he needs to talk to governor desantis is desantis gave permission to the secretary of state to push forward on two special elections held with gaetz's and waltz's seat. it takes 120 days to do all that. if you do the math and you are mike johnson and you have how many as a cushion? >> bill: you might be plus three in the end maybe. >> dana: it's important to try to get that clock moving. >> bill: you were talking about this. waltz's district. the panhandle is ruby red. they won't lose that seat. waltz represents the east coast and that's pretty red as well. i think they are safe and even stefanik's seat in northern new york is pretty red also. >> dana: gives people an opportunity who might have thought about running before. hard to beat an incumbent. now you will have fresh new faces for us to talk about so we can keep bill at the board which we love to do.
