they are calling you the comeback kid. it is it fair to say you got swept in with the trump way of? >> i feel in my case it was a vindication, voters who put me in office in this election in 2024 and we are excited to be here to serve. excited about the trump wave and what we felt. >> reporter: let's talk about things the republican congress will be looking at. they have a slim majority, talking about extending tax cuts, funding border security, repealing the inflation reduction act, expanding school choice and taking on universities. do you agree with that agenda? would you add anything to it? what do you think of those points? >> those agenda items are exactly what we ran on in this election. one of the themes i recall from donald trump's previous

administration was promises made promises to. to. i don't see a need for a change in that theme as we go into the situation we are facing right now. we have the trifecta. everyone is excited about that. it's a slim margin in the house but there is a sense of unity. we came out of the nomination process of a designee for speaker, speaker johnson ended up with unanimous decision of the body and we voted on that so i feel there is an excitement and sense of understanding that we have a window of opportunity that has opened up and we have got to be ready to govern and lead. anita: i don't know if you heard steny hoyer saying there's always going to be disagreements between republicans and democrats. >> there will always be disagreement between republicans and democrats but there is a mandate. no one will argue there is a mandate in the fact we were

able to flip the senate and maintained the majority in the house and donald trump won an overwhelming electoral college vote that many say has demonstrated a mandate and won the popular vote. anita: people are questioning the mandate. listen to speaker hakeem jeffries and hear what he has to say about this congress. >> interesting question from the standpoint of the republican claim that they have an overwhelming mandate. house democrats started the last congress at 212. we start the new congress no lower than 214 and we are still monitoring several races in california. 27, 28 of the 31 most vulnerable house democrats have been reelected. anita: i meant to say democratic leader. he's talking about three or four outstanding races in ohio,

iowa and california yet to be decided. what do you think of that? >> what he said really and truly is a spin, a way to look at the situation but you can't argue with the facts, we did flip the senate, the facts are we did maintain the majority of the house and the fact is that donald trump won with a mandate and even when you look at his appointments, the nominations he's making for cabinet positions, i'm hearing from people in my district who said they are over the moon excited about the names they are seeing. i do believe people are ready for this change. people are putting themselves in position to make the changes and the agenda you showed earlier matches up with everything from sealing the border to getting this economy moving again to restoring law and order. all those things are important.

anita: in addition to being congressman elect you are a baptist pastor. one quick question. on the religious front, one thing donald trump talks about when he talks about overhauling the department of education, that was on that list, he talks about bringing back prayer in the school. is there a way to do that so you can appease people who don't want to pray in school? >> i've always been an advocate of having prayer in the school. it would be something where prayer is one of those things for those who don't choose to participate don't have to participate but to have simply a time where folks are able to have an open prayer i am for having the pledge of allegiance every morning in the school, having a prayer every morning in the school. those are important ways of setting the tone. my wife is a teacher, eighth-grade american history, my daughter is a teacher, setting the tone in the

griff: with nominations, tapped to lead the pentagon. >> what i'm heartened by, just about all the folks tapped to join the next trump administration, the three major adversaries, iran, china and russia, they pose a threat and have coalesced. we are going to tackle these problems as a combined problem. this is a new narrative the president has to grapple with. he did a good job keeping those fronts separate, that's not what happened over the last four years. the incoming president and his incoming secretary of defense, national security adviser, they

have to grapple with the new reality. it is a tougher world than the one they left four years ago. griff: i want your thoughts on the hegseth nomination and some insight should he be confirmed, depending on your self. >> the pentagon is a leviathan. 1.4 million men and women, 750,000 civilians, 750,000 contractors, look at all the problems and there needs to be some reform, programs and policies, the secretary of defense is a war fighter, one of two national commanders in the command and control chain. he has to manage the wars in the middle east and the one in europe. it is an enormous task.

the president gets the call. he gets to make those calls in article 2 section 2 the senate gets to advise and consent and they will have those hearings but it will be an enormous task he's going to fall into. it will be a tough job because it is tough with all those issues and there are issues that need to be corrected. one of the first targets of doge, that's a good want to start with. griff: is he the right man to the job? >> that is up to the senate which when you talk about being the right or wrong person, we just talk about it. the real people who will bring that out is the senate, the advice and consent role that they have. we need to support the president of the united states, those are his calls. we cause. we had to fight through

the board in montgomery county voted on thursday and in bucks county a democratic commissioner made the argument when voting to count contested ballots. >> precedent by courts doesn't matter anymore in this country and people violate laws anytime they want. for me if i violate this law it is because i want a court to pay attention. >> reporter: republican dave maccormack's campaign are asking the state supreme court to affirm it decision. bob casey on the other hand argues counties should be making their own decisions and the high court should not intervene. mccormick leads by 20,000 votes, the margin falls below the threshold that triggers a recount. the race was called on november 7th, the outstanding balance would not be enough for

foreign countries, other parliamentary systems. not sure that's the answer but we should be asking tough questions of these nominees. the idea you put somebody like rfk as director of health and human services, the only achievement, his last name happens to be kennedy and the same breath, the problem with diversity, equity and inclusion, the most nonmerit higher i have seen is robert kennedy to be head of hhs. anita: actio's, seems like there is pushback on the role of nancy pelosi. house dems sick of pelosi. anonymous quotes saying she needs to take a seat, maybe a back seat. one lawmakers said making a scattershot comments is not just unhelpful but damaging, said the lawmaker. finally, jeffries told members the buck stops with me. do you think this is true?

griff: donald trump has tapped rfk junior to be the health and human services secretary drawing bipartisan criticism and praise. more on what this means for the future of healthcare in america, doctor marc siegel, thanks for being here. i want to play with you last night, doctor casey means, wrote about making america healthier, she was on bill marr's show and said this about the kennedy pick. >> americans are tired of being acylated about the fact that there is not a problem right now. what happened on election day is americans came out and said we want to bend the curve of the chronic disease epidemic that is destroying american potential and i think rfk represents someone who is willing to take that on.

>> reporter: what are your thoughts? >> there's a problem. obesity is the problem. there was a battle for years whether to call it a disease but from where i sit as a practicing internist and professor of medicine, i'm seeing the effects of obesity every day, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes even certain cancers which are diet is directly linked to that. it was a shock to find out 73% of all 3% of all the foods on our store shelves are ultra-processed food, high fructose corn syrup, salt, sugar, chemicals that lead directly to obesity. the battle is a lot of this is due to the food industry having a trauma this amount of power. it may not be in the regulatory powers of the fda, though they haven't been strong on this. how do we go after the lobbies? same with the pharmaceutical industry, putting a lot of

it looks like his confirmation, accused him of that and he told nbc a few weeks ago it is much more nuanced than that, it's not accurate to say he's anti-vax. >> i'm not going to take away anybody's vaccines. i've never been anti-vaccine. if vaccines are working for somebody i won't take them away. people ought to have choice. that choice ought to be informed by the best information. griff: your thoughts on the vaccine front? >> i want to emphasize, the stuff that gets taken into our bodies, it used to be democrats who fought back the most common out is the republicans. it should be a bipartisan issue. as far as vaccines, it is an issue of choice and should be between a doctor and a patient and i said that throughout the pandemic about my word of caution is it is also a community health tool, one of the greatest public health tools in history. what do i mean by that?

take something like measles vaccine or whooping cough vaccine or chickenpox vaccine and unless you vaccinate everybody those who can't get the vaccine aren't protectors. that's heard immunity. we were at 95% for the diseases i just talked about and we are dipping closer to 90 one%. it is going to lead to a resurgence which everybody out there, you have a choice but you also have to think about others around you. community in the unity. that's not something he is touching on. griff: such an important point for you to raise. kennedy has said in the past community safety and individual freedom collide when it comes to vaccine mandates. didn't expect to hear this come up during his confirmation hearings. thank you for your insights, great as always. anita: great discussion.
