going to use the military to start the process of deporting hundreds of thousands of people. what's interesting is he is going to unveil a series of executive orders on day one. if you remember, he had some executive orders early on in his administration, like the travel ban, stuff like that. those did not stand up in court. so what they're doing is they are trying to make them court-proof, essentially. they are trying to figure out exactly how they can be within the law, and yet do what is -- what he promised to do. and if somebody has been ordered deported. you know, you have gone through the court system, it's pretty easy to say okay, those people should go. that's what he is going to be doing. and in particular. the focus is on people with a criminal record. they are first in line. >> ainsley: tom said criminal aliens, alien gangs, we are seeing tren de aragua this just came out intelligence community has been warned that they have expanded their territory.ien gag

>> ainsley: in about one hour the laken riley murder trial resumes in florida following testimony from the suspect's exroommate who said that they took a taxpayer funded humanitarian flight from new york city to get down to georgia carley shimkus is here with the latest. >> carley: that trial resumes in athens courtroom for day three of testimony. prosecutors say jose ibarra attacked and killed laken riley as she was going on a morning jog on campus at the university of georgia. investigators say they determined that riley had called 911 just minutes after leaving for her midmorning run citing information taken from her smart watch.

trying to be reasonable and you say look, i may not have gotten the language right on this of how to say it with the right pronouns or anything like that. but the principle still remains the same. so, why are you receiving so much pushback? >> well, look, i mean, you can have a debate about this issue. and that's really my core point. we need to be able to debate contentious issues without just being shut down. and this is a problem that we have in politics today. we can't, as democrats, feel like we can debate some of these contentious issues at the risk of offending people. i hear this from my republican colleagues as well. some of them have real trouble coming out and just saying that biden won the 2020 election or good cases for being involved in ukraine because they are afraid of what they will hear from their own party base on those contentious subjects. but we can't advance policies for the american people. we can't represent the vast majority of americans and the concerns that they face if we're not willing to actually engage in debate. and that's really my core point

here. >> lawrence: so why the protest though, sir? it seems like. >> that's a good question. >> lawrence: when i talk -- and i have been traveling around the country with some democrats. and they voted for donald trump on multiple issues. the issue i continue to hear about is not being anti-trans but the fact that they don't want biological males competing with their daughters or they don't like them going into the bathroom. it's a legitimate issue, deserves some type of debate. but, instead of debating it. they are protesting you. >> well, look. i'm not afraid of protest. people protest out in front of my office all the time because they think i'm too pro-israel, for example. so protests are okay. part of free speech. but, you're absolutely right. we just need to be willing to talk about these contentious issues. nighttime anti-trans either. in fact i have a strong record of supporting trans people, including trans kids. this isn't about trans kids, either. that's another criticism i hear. look, my kids are young. they play on co-ed soccer teams.

just like i did when i was their age, too. but when they get older, when we are talking about competitive sports, when people are a lot bigger. it's reasonable to have restrictions. that's why the ncaa has restrictions. that's why the olympics have restrictions. and, yet, for some reason, because of some orthodox litmus test in our party, we're not even spoltzed to entertain the idea. i'm just saying let's have a debate. let's have a debate about this. let's have a debate about immigration. flight democrats are supportive of this bipartisan immigration deal that trump shut down. we know we actually do have a problem at the border. i know some democrats don't like to deny that let's have a debate about how reasonably to solve it and let's actually try to come up with some bipartisan solutions that the majority of americans can agree with that's where we should be as a country. you know, my job isn't to just represent the people who voted for me back in massachusetts. it's to represent everyone. and i'm proud to stand up for civil rights. but, part of having a civil

debate in america is having free speech and being willing to speak your mind. >> lawrence: so you brought up the president-elect. i want to talk about what it seems like some democrats are talking about right now. they are saying they are going to strategize to fight trump's agenda. i guess my big question is are we going to see another four more years of anti-trump resistance? the reason why i ask this is because he won the election, the popular vote, the electoral college, it looks like is he going to have a slim majority in the house. the senate is the republicans' way. isn't there some way to work with the president? i mean, he is not in lock step with republicans on every issue. do you see this as a more of a resistance movement or do you think the party is going to moderate? >> that's a really good question. there are definitely some people who just say you have to oppose every single thing that trump does. i disagree with that i think we need to work with republicans where we can. and we need to stand up and

fiercely oppose trump where we disagree with him. where he has hateful policies, where he doesn't represent the majority of americans. i mean, let's remember, that trump won the popular vote by a smaller margin than hillary clinton won the popular vote over trump back in 2016. i think it's the responsibilities of presidents just like it's my responsibility back home to represent everybody. you know, not just to represent the people who voted for you. but to try to find solutions that are good for the majority of americans. lawyer. >> lawrence: so congressman, why not just run for party chair? it's clear that -- this is a voice that's missing in the conversation. there are some people within your party that feels like they should double down. this is your opportunity to put them back on course. and say, listen, if you want to win over your voters, i mean, because there is two parts to the trump thing. it's the fact that he won the popular vote as well as the electoral college and then have you democrats that decided that they were just going to stay at home. so, even though they didn't vote

for donald trump, they said this is -- i'm out of it for right now. so why not just go out there, put your hat in the ring and try to moderate the party? >> well, look it, i am trying to moderate the party. this is not about me though. this really have about how we get the party back to a winning position. and we're not going to win the midterms. we are not going to restore some balance in washington between democrats and republicans just if i'm trying to advance myself. we're going to do it if we get more people elected to places like the house. that's why, you know, my focus is my organization save america elects democratic veterans. we actually did quite well in this past election. i know democrats lost the house overall, but our win rate. the must be of my candidates who won was close to 90%. you know, these are veterans like jared goldman in maine holds a trump district but bipartisan guy he brings marine values to his work every single day. >> lawrence: that's a maybe then. maybe you put your hand into the

still fairly warm here across the northeast. we have got some rain and snow on the way to areas that are drought-stricken. and then across the west. a lot of storms moving into the northwest and those are going to travel across country. so you can see it, we have heavy rain in the forecast and the gulf coast, up towards the mid-atlantic. and then across a blizzard for the northern plains and upper midwest and then next storm system moves into the west. here it is potentially heavy rain for the plain states, cooler air moving in as far as south as texas and secondary low moves in later this week. there are the cold temperatures on thursday. below freezing. winds in excess of 40, 50 miles per hour and then the wind chills in the teens and 20's. there is the big storm system moving in toward the northeast bringing mainly rain along the coast and snow for interior sections of the northeast. i will tell you, ainsley on friday, we have the big tree lighting ceremony, we could get a little rain, so dress appropriately. i'm trying to warn people in advance. we are all going to be here during the five and we could be

always thought about it. looking at your book right now, you always seem to want to be a broadcaster. chris meyers, that deserves a wow you felt comfortable sitting with your mom playing pin knuckle. >> describing play by play their card game giving away clues when you are not supposed to. but calling into a radio station and disguising my voice so i could get on a couple of different ways to helped get me into the radio business. work my way through college. the book, brian, it celebrates world series super bowlens great moments. and then some moments that become bigger than sports when there is an earthquake at the world series to be in the middle of that i wanted to describe that for people from the inside out who watched sporting events either in person or on television. it's kind of a blend. >> if you took the movie forrest gump and parts of that with almost young rock and roll

journalist who follows the band, his story and you put a sports theme around it, that's kind of what this book covers with names you know from ally to tyson to mahomes to bread, to being there in some of their biggest moments. >> brian: phil murray writes your forward a friendship that grew gradually. real quick, i also know that you -- up close you did o.j. fresh off the murder. >> yes. >> brian: you said you were as nervous as you have ever been. >> yeah. i faced an angry mike tyson sitting in his backyard inches from my face when he wanted to destroy me for something a question. o.j. simpson. the first live interview with o.j. simpson after both the double murder trial and wrongful death lawsuit and he turned down barbara walters. he didn't want to do it on tape. one of those water cooler moment. what went on between that his denial preparation and running into him years later in an elevator just the two of us that i think is compelling reading.
