peace through strength, to quote a famous american politician whom i spoke to last friday. i think that's crucial that we have a good deal because the whole dealing will be watching what type of deal will be structure president-elect trump last night hesitate image so you he says hello and get along great. when will europe equalize payments u.s. as you are prepared for all out war with russia because that's where this is heading. and who is going to get putin to the negotiating table. first off on the first thing. who is going to get putin to the negotiating table. do you plan on doing that? >> well, clearly, first of all, we have to make sure that ukraine is in a position of more strength than they are at the moment. so that a deal can be struck which is to the russians and, therefore, to china and north korea and iran because all watching. take xi jinping, he will be very

much interested who comes out on top of this. and if it's the russians, long term. so we have to make sure that ukraine is in the position where they can start these talks. and obviously then we have to take it step-by-step. make sure that putin comes on board and to your other point, president trump is right. he was right that we had to spend more on defense on the part of nato. we have done so in the meantime. we still have to do more. but, at the same time, we also have to make sure that collectively, we keep ukraine in the fight and prevent the russians from getting what they want. >> brian: do you plan on getting vladimir putin to the table? are you going to make that offer? or do you want president trump to do it? is that on the table? >> i would argue that, first of all, we have to make sure that ukraine is in a position of strength and that we have to do collectively. and to make sure that whenever it comes to talks, that ukrainians can discuss the

future of their country from this position of strength so it has to be ukraine to the table but they will only do that when they feel that they can get something out of it. and at this moment, they are really on the back foot. obviously, president trump is right. that in the meantime, not only was alliance europeans have to do more. push for that in the past successfully. and we still have to do more in the future. anhe fight in ukraine and support for ukraine. i also think on this issue. it is europeans who have to step up but, obviously, still needs to help the u.s. and formidable formiddefense industrial base. i think-guess -- no i'm pretty certain even when we do all of this, that collectively, president trump, myself, others we will be able to get putin to the table. he will sense that ultimately, it is in his interest not to continue to fight. but he has to feel this. he has to sense that.

>> brian: it's hard to believe that he is losing a thousand people a day and feels like he is winning. number two is now they have got the houthi rebels fighting there they got the north koreans fighting there. at what point does nato say i can't let ukraine fight alone. does nato -- is nato considering putting troops in if these other countries keep coming in to help russia? >> i think it will not be wise to do it. you do not want to get into a dire confrontation with allies being a party to the conflict. i don't think that is wise. what you need to do is to make sure that ukrainians can take the fight forward. can make sure that they get in a position of strength, whenever it gets to talks and that means that we have to supply them with the weapons they need to do that, to get in a position of strength, whenever the talks start. but then clearly, we have to make sure that the deal being struck is a good deal. >> brian: right. >> that we do not give in to iran, china, north korea, and russia. this is really crucial for the
