♪ ♪ >> sandra: a new image is coming out of california right now. san francisco courtesy ktvu with 7.0 earthquake triggered tsunami warning on the west coast. 5 million people affected by this. let's get to straight to jonathan hunt live as people are heeding the warnings. what are you hearing, jonathan? >> sandra this was a big earthquake and a standard, 7.0 in major earthquake. not far off at the coast of eureka, california. that is close to the border with oregon. what is 270 miles or so north of san francisco. so a big distance, so tsunami generated by the earthquake would take some time to reach san francisco. we are told the bay area could experience any tsunamis in about the next 15-20 minutes.

i have to tell you, i've been monitoring the live cameras around eureka and you see eureka on the map about 250 miles north of san francisco. i did not see any significant waves developing. there were smaller waves. what i could see on the live cameras at the point at which this tsunami was supposed to be hitting there. that does not mean it does not build as it moves south perhaps towards san francisco. there are, as you said to, 5 million people under alert right now. governor gavin newsom and his press office put out a statement on x saying, "the governor briefed on the earthquakes help the coast of northern california and the resulting tsunami warning. governor newsom has now with state emergency officials and working to ensure californians are safe." they also said the state operations center has been activated to coordinate the

response. these tsunami alerts went quickly as they tend to now on social media and straight to the text of a lot of residents in northern california and in the southern portion of oregon there. just as i mentioned just south of the border with oregon, review recap, as you look at it right there. what is interesting about the earthquake it was very shallow and what we were told originally from the usgs it might have been as shallow about a half a mile. that shallowness of an earthquake is very significant in terms of the damage and the strength it delivers. that is significant here and why so many synonymy alerts have been put out so many communities right now, sandra. >> sandra: jonathan hunt live takes out of california and new details that command we will certainly bring that to the viewers live. we will be right back

heartfelt condolences to your family. thank you for speaking with us today. >> thank you. >> sandra: fox news alert, tsunami warning issued to nearly 5 million along the west coast there after earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude resulted in tsunami warning. they are urged to get away from the coastal area. obviously, mike, this is a situation too many familiar with on the west coast. the details, 40 miles off of the coast, 7.0 magnitude happen 10:45 a.m. specific time, local time there. and this is obviously right in the middle of a workday there. we are getting updates from the governor's office he is meeting with emergency officials. we wait any sort of update, but we are watching and we have live shots watching the coastal areas there as a lot of folks have to

heed the warnings, mike. >> mike: obviously, earthquakes come with the territory but tsunamis are rare. obviously, they were grave concern about the impact of that. we saw what happened 20 years ago when thailand, obviously talking about a very populated area west coast of the united states. we know the government is tracking this. the california state government and tabulate the work and state government as well. you see some of the communities and the path of the path of eureka, california, and further down the coast, san francisco the most populated part of the area. a lot of concern up and down interstate five core door as you look at the west coast of the united states. speed to look at the various warnings london breed and operations center response to tsunami warning and move out the coast one block in lent is the

instruction, public safety personnel they point to the coast to warn people to move inland. they will continue to provide updates. san francisco emergency is issuing a warning about the tsunami warning in effect. stay out of the water and away from beaches, docs, peers and one block inland is the common warning to anyone along the coast right now. jonathan hunt, you have an update for us. >> sandra, these warnings going up and down the oregon and california coast are very serious. the city of berkeley, remembered 250 miles or more from eureka close to the epicenter, this were earthquake. but the city of berkeley putting a warning out saying in all caps, leave now and do not wait and do not stay on boats or docs. bring all people and pets with you and only essentials and medications. lock doors when you leave and

take one vehicle with you to help the roadways open for responders. the warnings are serious. what we have seen from a lot of pictures go to a lot of people or significant number of people, at least, not paying much attention to the warnings. some people gathering right along the coastline to take a look. you can see on the left of your picture there, people pulling over to see what is going on. these are very serious warnings. it covers some 5 million people right now. we have not heard any reports as of yet of extensive damage or, indeed, injuries from the earthquake itself which took place in our and 13 minutes ago. that we are obviously waiting for updates and eureka not the most accessible city in california by any means so we await further information what damage the earthquake itself did. if indeed a coach at that

tsunamis come to pass any significant way and any damage . we will keep you posted throughout the afternoon, sandra. >> we are told no longer tsunami warning to the west coast. that just end that a lot of precautions taking the situation very, very seriously 7.0 earthquake. that would be good news if the tsunami warning called off. a sigh of relief for the west coast certainly in northern california and oregon along the coastline. >> yeah, mike, as i was mentioning earlier, that earliest indication this might not be any significant movement in terms of tsunami is when we were monitoring live cameras in eureka which was obviously the closest to the epicenter of the earthquake. from what i could see, at least, a few waves a couple feet high coming across the shoreline. but there was not any significance. indeed, it could be good news we
