first lady of the united states and the author of melania, melania trump. great to see you >> melania: thank you, good morning. >> steve: the first thing is congratulations how has your life changed over the last three weeks? it's so new but we've never had this happen, a president leave and come back in, what, 80 years >> melania: yeah, it's incredible and we are very, very busy. the life is -- the pace of it, the transition team i'm establishing, my transition team and also working on my office, putting my office together, and also, you know, organizing the residence and packing. it's incredible what you need to do in that situation. >> ainsley: melania in your book you wrote about the obamas and wanting to go into the white

house in 2016 early so you could find out what the room colors are so you could make sure you had a room suited properly for your son, your young son at the time and there was some hesitation with letting you in early. you probably don't need to go in early this time because you know what to expect but how is that working have you been back to the white house will you go in early to prepare? >> melania: well, this time it's very different because we already know where we are going and we have all of the plans from before. so we don't need to go back in. my team is in contact with the white house, so that's a plus. but we have all what we need, so this is the second time so it's nothing new. the first time was challenging. we didn't have much access, we were in on january 20th. but this time it's already in the process >> steve: well you don't have to go in and measure the drapes because you put the drapes there >> melania: correct. >> steve: it's one of those things. so take us back. we all remember, in 2017 when he

became president, you know, during this transition period, it was kind of a mad dash because it's like, oh, i won, now what do i do. he's won before. he knows what to do. it seems much more focused and it seems really efficient. i don't know if that's elon musk, you know, the efficiency guy, but he just seems so much calmer. >> ainsley: calmer, yeah >> melania: i think it's for everybody, even for me, it's very different because i know what you need to establish. you know what kind of people you need to hire to be in your office. so that's what i'm doing now. i'm interviewing people for my office. i'm establishing everything what is needed so we could start on day one, everybody's in and we start working >> lawrence: melania you don't get a lot credit for this but you did a lot when you were in the white house some stories people don't know you put several students and we'll talk about the ornaments you pay for

their college put them through school >> melania: yes >> lawrence: tell us about some of the programs you're going to do this next time around >> melania: well when i was in the white house for four years i established my be best initiative and i also successfully brought it oversea and around the world, it was very successful. and after i left the white house i established my web three and web two platforms where i design, where i have collectibles like ornaments, every season, this is the third season, and many other collectibles that are available now. so with those, i have students from foster community that i sponsor, and i'm very proud of, and we have many of them now, so their life changes because they will have an education.

>> brian: so much has changed this time. can i just give you my observation? >> melania: yes. >> brian: i saw the president last night and i saw when he was hosting the a prehn tense i interviewed him when i was with the usfl and i was doing sports and he was an owner. and i have never seen him so level. he just seems calm, serene, accomplished. not cocky. you see him every day in all different circumstances. are you noticing, even if you factor in, maybe factor in the assassination attempts, a different approach right now at 78 years old that you maybe have not seen before? >> melania: i think, because we were all -- we've been there and he was there before and now it's different, i think the energy is different, people around him are different. >> brian: but don't you think the magnitude of the win is sdmifrnt >> melania: it is, it is. >> brian: so comprehensive >> melania: it is. >> brian: how did he internalize that

>> melania: i see the country that really supported him and they support him. he's focused to make this country great again and it's incredible and he's hard work as well. >> ainsley: there were two assassination attempts while he was running now that he will be our next president, do you feel like the rhetoric has been toned down and how do you feel? are you worried going forward? >> melania: i hope it is. i hope the country will be united and that's what we all hope for. and, you know, i'm always against violence. i think nothing is accomplished with the violence, and that's what we need to, you know, talk about it. >> steve: it's got to be so thoughtful and we've heard him talk about, you know, by the grace of god he is alive today. what we have seen since he was

elected, and over the last couple of months, is that calmness and maybe gratitude or whatever it is, but something else we've seen is he seems so kind of happy and loose because last night at the patriot awards i think we've got a clip, he was doing the trump dance and i'm sure you've seen that evolve over the last -- as you look right there, how do you describe your husband's dance moves? >> oh, this is very special and unique dance. >> it is, right? >> melania: and i think a lot of people are copying it and everybody have fun with it. >> brian: is this how you dance? >> melania: no. >> steve: which part of the trump -- did you give him any tips >> melania: no. >> steve: in the beginning it was low and then up high and now there's a golf swing >> melania: nope he's coming all on his own. >> steve: have you ever done the trump dance, you are mrs. trump? . >> melania: i did not. >> steve: so i guess you're not going to start today. >> brian: you could practice >> lawrence: so melania,

everyone is so fascinated with baird and as people may or may not know he helped the president with the social media strategy and says hey you have to do some tik toks and do some of the podcasts. what's the fascination with your son? we actually have a clip of before and after of the evolution of barron. let's play it. >> say hi larry. >> hello. i like my suitcase. >> i have to go to school now? >> yes. >> hurry up. very nice to see you, very nice. >> >> lawrence: what do you think the evolution of your son? he is a grown man now. >> he is a grown young man, i'm very proud of him about his knowledge, even about politics and giving advice to his father. he brought in so many young people he knows, his generation. because nowadays, the young generation, they don't sit in front of tv anymore, they're all on their tablets, they're on

their phones and all of this these podcasts and streamers. he was very vocal and he gave advice to his father and was incredible how he brought in success because he knew exactly who his father needs to contact and to talk to. >> steve: isn't it shocking how fast he went from that little boy to -- >> melania: yes. >> ainsley: what advice do you have for other moms because i'll go back and look at videos when she was that age and there's like a pain in my heart because i miss those years. what's your advice for all of us that, your son's in college now, you've seen him grow up. how do you handle each stage? >> i think you need to be present, and to be with them as much as you can. to be there as a teacher and a guide and give them guidance. i think it's the most important,

because years go by so fast. we just don't imagine. it's like i see the clip that you just showed, i feel like it was like a few months ago, but time goes so fast. >> brian: but here's your challenge, that we don't have nobody watching us, he's trying to adapt to college as a freshman, always tough. he's got secret service everywhere in new york city where even not being 6'9" and famous you could be targeted for a random crime. how has he managed to navigate and what advice -- is it possible for him to be a normal student? >> melania: i don't think it's possible for him to be a normal student. his experience at college, it's very different than any other kid. and i'm very proud how he's handling, he's very strong and he knows that he's in different position than other children. and i, you know, i just say make your dreams come true.

joyful, but also very traumatic and hard. >> steve: so when people read it and they go, you know what, i read it, there's one thing i did not know about you. is there one thing that they repeatedly say i didn't know you did this? >> melania: correct, they don't know few of the stuff even from my childhood how i grew up and also from the white house years. and they don't know, and that's why i wrote this book. >> brian: one thing that stood out for us is, here you are this beautiful international model and you're the first lady of the united states the world's most popular country. you're in the white house and you're not on the cover of any of these magazines. >> ainsley: she used to be. >> brian: do you think that will change and would you say yes, the vogues or the people whatever? >> melania: look, i've been there on the cover, on the cover of vogue and many magazines before and, you know, for me, we

have so many other important things to do than to be on the cover of any magazine. i think the life would not change for anybody if i'm on the cover of the magazine. >> brian: can i retract my question, then? >> steve: on the cover of this book. >> brian: they want to sell copies put her on. >> ainsley: if you read the book she talks about how anna went to paris with you is that where you went to shop for your wedding dress? >> melania: yes. >> ainsley: they were friends she was on the cover of vogue several times before that and after that because you're a conservative and married to donald trump >> melania: as soon as my husband is running for the president in 2015 was the -- everything changed for them and for us. >> brian: bus rosie o'donnell went to your wedding too, right? >> melania: no, she did not. >> brian: oh, good >> lawrence: so melania you have the new season of your ornaments coming out and this is how you pay for some of these kids' colleges as well. tell us about it >> melania: so these are the

in with a fake id. former u.s. -- joining us right now is former homicide detective and retired chief of detectives at the hartford connecticut police department brian foley. brian i gave you a lot. that's what we know. what do you think is happening today. >> everyone is looking at what's going on trying to track down the killer, let me talk about the insurance side of things. hartford connecticut the insurance capitol of the year all the major companies are there to include united healthcare with a large footprint there they are staffed with internal investigators the best of which are all the retired cops, homicide detectives, the best of the best get hired by the insurance companies, it pays a lot better than the police department. they get, ceos in every company, they all get a large amount of threats. these threats are vetted by these retired cops now working as investigators. when it becomes a serious threat they'll escalate, sometimes they'll call the police department, sometimes they'll call the town they live in notify those police departments. they also hire their own

internal security, private security as well. some ceos are reluctant to accept that beefed-up security when this stuff happens. but at the same time a sudden change in a ceo is volatile, has a volatile impact on the investigators. so the security can actually be hoisted on them by the hr director security director where they'll put it on them. they're all nervous and have increased security. >> brian: he's in a situation where him and his wife are living separately that could cause tension from a detective point of view and we know he's addressing the board of directors so we know exactly where he is and where he's going and we saw his bodyguard on used to be security for him, a really nice guy, but -- and you can tell he's going places but he didn't understand why he didn't have security. are you surprised in new york city he wouldn't have security? >> yes, that's complains

situate. you get complacent. our mayor didn't want it and we would follow him to make sure somebody was on him. that's likely what should have happened here. that being said i know for a fact the main ceos of the insurance companies have beefed up wherever they are in the company right now the threats of escalated the number of threats coming into the insurance companies over the last couple of days have been --. >> brian: couple of days literally since it happened i talked to one of the main investigators at a large one in hartford they were already getting stuff that day hours after because believe me they want to know if it was a trend they're worried about copycat people but united healthcare is going to have a pretty good list of suspects on to compare to what nypd who are the best of the best, the varsity team they're going to have a list of suspects they'll compare the two. >> brian: until this assassination i had no idea there were this level of threats on a healthcare company. >> very common and it's almost always denied coverage. >> brian: wow. which has happened a lot with that company in tiffed brian

carmine received special christmas gifts and they join us to share how much the organizations mean to them. john i'll start with you since you're over on the end. what does folds of hopper mean to you when you look at your children? >> most important to us it's more than just a scholarship for carlisle to attend school. it kind of goes beyond that and it talks to really just knowing that people out there believe in honoring the sacrifices of not just servicemen and women and veterans but also kind of the military families at large and what they do for that and it gives her a great opportunity to go to a school that alliance with the values we have at home. >> ainsley: you are darling caroline. laura tunnel to towers just helped your family. why is it important for people watching to give? it is the giving season. >> tunnel to towers is so important to my kids and i. they paid off our mortgage at the worst time in our lives and it just gave us that comfort,

stability in our lives and that sense of hope that there is really good people out there willing to help us. >> ainsley: and andrea first responders children foundation, wa does that mean to your family? >> i mean it means everything, losing my husband carmine was the worst day of my life and for any family in our situation puts you in the darkest time and it's amazing when there's an organization out there such as first responder's children foundation that want to put the light back in your life and with sending a box of toys on your doorstep right before the holidays for your children so it puts a smile on your face, that's everything a mom can ask for. >> ainsley: absolutely. >> it's amazing when a community comes together to give back to the heroes that put their lives on the line every day. >> ainsley: thank you for all your sacrifices. we have a mom here who i think you're going to be delighted to meet she wanted to come out and miss you all a merry christmas. the former and future first lady of the united states of america. would you all like to meet
