gunman pictured here left new york city immediately after murdering united health care ceo brian thompson wednesday morning. in this photo you can see the suspect wearing a gray backpack. authorities now say they have that gray backpack after finding it hidden in the brush in central park yesterday. the new york post sharing this up-close photo. police say when the assailant fled from the shooting on an e-bike, he rode into central bark wearing it but exited without it. -- central park. that piece of evidence now in the hands of the crime lab. what happened next, watch. >> he was here for about ten days. but we have that bus leaving the same morning and going to the terminal the same morning of the incident, approximately an hour afterwards. >> reporter: and here is an overall look at the path the suspect took wednesday morning after the shooting.

police believe the suspect likely left on the bus headed towards atlanta, reversing the same a route the gunman took on the way to the city. they have video of him entering the bus depoe here in new york but no video of him exiting, and now the fbi is assisting the nypd is this investigation, offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. the dea also stepping up saying, quote, we have offered all assistance, but fbi has led federally, so we are there for them to lean on us for anything. and there's a lot of evidence in this case, guys. so far we're being told police are processing possible dna, fingerprints and cell phone data as they home in on the identity of the person responsible. guys? rachel: thank you, chanley. meanwhile, president-elect trump says he has confidence of in pete hegseth during the upcoming "meet the press" interview that he did, this as we learn that tulsi gabbard is going to be on the pill hill next week.

and -- on the hill next week. and we've been talking about a bit about how that attention -- as i think things are getting better for pete, it seems like we've turned a corner a bit, the focus now on tulsi gabbard. will: you know, you talk about the momentum, what's happened with pete, you brought this up earlier, charlie, what is happening with pete hegseth? it's become a verb, he's being kavanaugh'd. he's been the subject of a complete character assassination if much based on speculation, anonymous sources and lies. and the purposeful ignorance of people who would know or even people on the record who are testifying to his character. what should be revealed in that process is that it's insincere, and it's a direct tack designed to take someone down, and once it succeeds or fails, it will move on to to its next target, and that next target is most likely now to be tulsi gabbard. as to the success of pete hegseth and whether or not they will succeed in taking him down

or fail -- and i think they're going to fail, i think he will be your next nominee, or your next secretary of defense, the reasoning is he has the back of president donald trump. and that is made clear on "meet the press." charlie: and, you know, the reason that donald trump picked pete is not because pete is a perfect human, it's because he has real life experience working as a soldier in the department of defense, but also the reason he picked him is because he's a fighter. if we haven't learned anything over the past year and, quite frankly, the past eight a years since donald trump first arrived on the political landscape, it's that the thing that's lacking in washington is somebody who's a fighter who's willing to fight and stand up to these people, these bullies, and completely the be undeterred by it and keep going. and i know that on a very personal level president trump admires that in pete. it's why he picked him in the

first place, and it's why he's still standing behind him. rachel: by the way, i've been really impressed with his wife jen, hock-armed with him -- lock-armed with him throughout this process. i think that's important for everyone the see, that she stands 100% behind him. we see her there almost in every image, and i think she's been a really important part of testifying to his character and to so much about who he is. we're going to get to this clip from "meet the press," but i will tell you whatever doubts people had about the qualifications of pete hegseth for this job, we'll, i predict -- will, i predict, be 100% laid to rest during that confirmation hearing where we will see this is a man who knows what needs to be done at the department of defense. is anyway, let's get to this clip because here's president trump saying he stands behind pete hegseth and thinks he will be confirmed.

>> it looks like pete is doing well now. i mean, people were a little bit concerned. he's a young guy with a tremendous track record, actually went to princeton ask and went to harvard. he was a good student at both, but he loves the military, and i think people are starting to see it. we'll be working on his nomination along with a lot of others. >> since you bring him up, do you still have confidence in pete hegseth? >> yes, i do, i really -- he's a very smart guy. i've known him through fox, but i've known him for a long time, and he's basically a military guy. i mean, every time i talk to him, all he wants to to talk about is the military. he's a military guy. >> have you gotten assurances from senators that he's going to be confirmed? >> no. >> do you think he can make it? >> i think he will, yeah. i've had a lot of senators calling me up saying he's fantastic. >> you don't drink yourself. you've talked about how devastating drinking can be. >> yeah. >> how concerned are you that the person who you picked for

this temperature job at the defense -- top job at the defense department, at least according to those who have worked with him, has struggled with drinking? >> but i've spoken to people that know him very well, and they say he does not have a drinking problem -- will: because he doesn't. rachel: because he doesn't. [laughter] will: on the record sources. one more thing on pete real quick. i said that he -- it's going well because he has the support of donald trump. do you know who else he has the support of? one other really important contingency, constituency, the rank and file of the united states military, the soldiers, your war fighters. they support pete hegseth as secretary of defense. rachel: is there going to be -- i thought i read that there was going to be, and actually people told me, there's going to be a bunch of navy seals who are getting together to -- do you know much a ant this? will: i do. rachel: tell us about it. i'll tell you how i found out about it, but go ahead and tell us. will: i happen to to the know there's large groups of navy

seals, green berets who are prepared to sign on and show up in person to display their support for pete hegseth. rachel: yeah. that's a powerful thing. will: we had house speaker mike johnson on with us earlier. we talked about this. >> i'm optimistic about it. i think he's on the right track. i talked to a number of senators personally on the hill over the last couple of days, and it seems like the momentum's moving the right way. we've all made mistakes in our life, right? but we believe in redemption, and what pete brings to the table is a love for the military, a great education background, a great experience set. i think he's well suited for the job, and he will shake up the status quo which is why this pick is so important. i talked to him a new days ago. he was in good spirits, and my oldest son is a freshman at the naval academy. this is a live fire exercise for me. patriots like pete are the ones that we need. he's willing the take the fire to stand and serve his country. rachel: one of the things pete said, charlie and will, was i

stand and i'm going to fight in this position for the war fighters, not the warmongers. he's talked a lot about the toll that some of these stupid wars have take on our, on our military and how we need to be really judicious about where we decide to put our blood and treasure. and that's something that he's talked a lot about, which i think is why there's so much fear out there of somebody like pete hegseth. charlie: oh, yeah. and when you're at the stage where the washington post is trying to minimize the two bronze stars that pete earned, both of which are only earned by people who night in combat, by the way. i think it's kind of significant. when they're minimizing it, it kind of tells you all you need to know. rachel: while they were glorifying tim walz's record which doesn't hold a candle to what pete hegseth has done.

well, right now crowds starting to gather outside of notre dame ca cathedral in paris after its reopening -- for its reopening. will: president-elect trump will be on hand at the ceremony. charlie: chief religion correspondent lauren green is live in paris. lauren. >> reporter: hey, good morning, or as they say, bonjour today. france and the world will celebrate the reopening of notre dame cathedral, that grand dame. the geopolitics is an ever growing undercard of the main event. president-elect donald trump has arrived this morning for what is his first appearance on the world stage since winning the election on november 5th. reports are he will meet with emmanuel macron, one of the world's leaders, who was in office during trump's first term that ended in 2020, and sources say by inviting trump to the reopening of noter dam, being the first head of state to extend the olive branch, macron

is positioning himself. also today volodymyr zelenskyy may meet with president trump as well, and prince william is stepping in for his father, king charles ii. five and a half years ago the world watched in horror as fire engulfed notre dame, the 12th century gothic cathedral, and president trump vowed it would -- president macron vow ised it would be reopened in five years. so the work ban. 2,000 statues and decorative features were restored, some 2500 oak trees were felled, a new lead roof was shaped to complete the covering. the religious relics heroically saved during the fire will have a place of honor. the crown of thorns, a fragment of the cross and one of the holy nails believed to have been used in the crucifixion. it cost some $800 million, and 65 million of that came from

headlines, a judge dismissing the top charge of second-degree manslaughter against daniel penny over the subway chokehold death of jordan neely. the move came after the jury deadlocked twice. the young marine veteran faces up to four years in prison on the lesser charge of negligent homicide. jury deliberations begin monday. those mysterious drones spotted flying over new jersey now reported in ten counties across the state. democrat governor phil murphy, who met with state and local agencies thursday, saying on x, quote: we are actively monitoring the situation in close are coordination with our federal and law enforcement partners on this matter. there is no known threat to the public at this time. rachel: that statement says nothing to me. charlie: fox news alert, the fbi stepping in to help with the nationwide manhunt for the suspected killer when gunned down the ceo of united health care. and we now know the killer may have skipped town soon after the shooting as police examine new evidence including what they believe is the killer's backpack as seen in this photo obtained by "the new york post." retired fbi agent scott duffy joins us now. agent duffy, good to see you this morning. i can't help but sort of get the sense that maybe nypd, they have a lot more information than we realize at this point. >> yeah, good morning, charlie. thank you for having me on. i would totally agree with you in that assessment. and and law enforcement keeps things close to the vest, and they're if providing information and, of course, any information

that's going out to media through leaks or whatever, those are just enough in order to keep this investigation in the public's eye. with regards to recent backpack being located and, of course, all the discarded materials, wrappers and bottles creating a dna profile, possible fingerprint profile. and then, of course, all the information that's coming in through the public where names are probably being provided to them, and those names are just not being given to the public because they have to make the connection, is that the individual that was at the crime scene. charlie: so when the police indicate that they knew -- know that he left town and they know that he left town by a bus, do they know this because they have a name, do you think, or is that information that they've just gleaned from, you know, from security cameras? >> i would say it could be both. but more so because of they are

following every footstep and just from what we are seeing with regards to the video footage that's being provided to us that they are able to make a pretty good assessment, hey, he went in and he didn't come out of that bus stop, most likely he is on a bus out of town. charlie: right. so when this first happened and we first saw the video of it, you got the impression that this guy was somebody who was very practiced at -- this was a very professionally done job, but then the it looks like there were a lot are of mistakes made. what is your hunch about all that? >> yeah, i would agree with practiced. so he arrived plenty of time, at least ten days that law enforcement knows that he was doing his recognizant mission. he's probably going over every aspect of his leading up to the fatal shooting and then, of course, fairly quick, his exit.

so with regards to those bread crumbs law enforcement has picked up, there's no doubt in my mind that he is proficient, he has trained with weapons, but i wouldn't put him in the professional category because of the many mistakes that have been made, and law enforcement is going to exploit those. charlie: scott duffy, thank you very much for joining us this morning. >> thank you, charlie. if. charlie: president-elect donald trump returns to the world stage today in paris. what to expect from his meetings with macron and other world leaders. that's next. so, what are you thinking? i'm thinking... profile meetings including with emmanuel ma on and prince william. -- macron. dr -- [inaudible] joins us now. doctor, thanks for being with us. this is president-elect trump's first meeting on the world stage but not his first meeting with world leaders. we saw, for example, canadian prime minister justin trudeau come town to mar-a-lago, we've heard about the phone calls between the mexican president and donald trump. do you expect these interactions in europe to be a somewhat similar to what's already happened with trudeau? >> yeah, i think you're right. i think europe has always been an interesting place for trump. you remember hen he went in poland in 2017, he gave that speech where he said european civilization, we write symphonies, this is the society that created everything in science and history. so this is a very

carefully-chosen place for him to go. it is a massive signaling operation, as we say, first of all, it's a big thing in europe. it's a places where international gathering is happening, your leaders are there. but it's also a very good diplomatic balancing act. on one hand, he's there in europe to talk with european leaders because europe is jittery about trump, and they don't really know how he's going to position himself when it comes to tariffs, defense, nato, so it's kind of a reassurance in a way to the european leaders in large. but also this is a reassurance to the european right who are, you know, going to see the elections in romania, the right one, and then -- [inaudible] so this is kind of, like, trump's presence in europe itself proves to the european right, look, i can come back. there is a place for you in european democracy and have faith. i think this is a very good balancing act. will: what about the balancing act of serious negotiations,

serious diplomacy versus honoring the reopening of notre dame? we'll see if he has meetings with zelenskyy from ukraine, but there's also the questions of commitment to nato and that type of interaction. he's got all these guys there, macron, perhaps certificate zelenskyy -- zelenskyy. do you think there are moments that help establish the footing of the relationship going forward in europe? >> i absolutely think so. i think the key is to see in the next few days what trump does and what trump says. tradition with zelenskyy, zelenskyy understands there is the writing on the wall, that the war is technically unwinnable without the united states and how to start a negotiated end is something he wants to position himself. he wants to say if you keep giving us more weapons and money, we can win the war, but obviously ukraine's main power is -- problem is manpower. that is something, you know, he doesn't understand or if he does, he doesn't want to say in front of frump.

but trump -- of trump. but trump does understand that that. there are ways to think about how to end this war in the ukraine, there are ways like the north and south korean arms -- where you stop firing at each other or the balkan wars where you have a main negotiation starting first and then you can figure out where you want to place yourself. but fundamentally, this is trump's way of finding out, talking to other european leaders, like, look, this is our position. the war the unwinnable, we have to have a negotiated settlement. you know, i want to be a peace president, and this is my legacy. so this is a time the start talking, and i think this is a good ground for that. will: yeah. and i think based upon the precedent of the meeting with justin trudeau, resetting relationship, different from the way it's been the last four years, one that focuses on america and, because of that, a true leadership position. pretty exciting about what can begun here. dr., thank you so much for being with us. >> thank you very much for having me.
