1:01 am
everyone, i am laura ingraham and this is "the ingraham angle" from washington tonight and thank you for joining as. we have major stories we are following. in new york city, daniel penny has been found not guilty. more on that in moments, but first, we will go live to a presser and, of course go to the murder of the unitedhealthcare ceo, brian thompson. the press ongoing now. and we will go to. >> speaker to the local police here in altoona acted swiftly. i want to say a special thanks to officer tyler fry, the altoona police department. officer fry is about six months into his time serving his fellow people here in pennsylvania and he acted swiftly. he acted with smarts, and he acted with calm. you know, safety of people here
1:02 am
in pennsylvania, and he acted swiftly, he acted with smarts, and he acted with calm. you know, safety often turns on the strength of the relationship between the community and law enforcement. we have that strong relationship here in altoona, and it was proven here today. i want to ask all of her fellow pennsylvanians to demonstrate tthe same type of courage and smarts as the mcdonald's did this morning and help law enforcement year in pennsylvania as we continue with their investigation. you will see photos of the suspect who is here. and you should know that the suspect traveled between philadelphia and pittsburgh making pit stops in between, obviously here in altoona. i want to ask all of our fellow pennsylvanians to help us with any tips you might have by
1:03 am
contacting us at 1-800-four p.a. tips. i can, 1-800-4 p.a. tips. the suspect was just arraigned here in the courthouse and new york will file charges very, very soon. that process will continue to play out, injustice will be delivered in this case. of the has hinged on attention. in fact code to the attention in this case and the killing of brian thompson was helpful no doubt to allow us to capture his killer and alerting that individual at mcdonald's this morning and then having that individual contact the place. but some attention in this case, especially online has been deeply disturbing as some have
1:04 am
looked to celebrate instead of condemning this killer. brian thompson was a father to two. he was a husband and a friend to many, and yes, he was the ceo of a health insurance company. in america, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint. and understand people have real frustration with our health care system, and i have worked to address that throughout my career, but i have no tolerance nor should anyone for one man using an illegal ghost gun to murder someone because he thinks his opinion matters most. in a civil society, we are all less safe when ideologues engage
1:05 am
in vigilante justice. in some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. hear me on this: he is no hero! the real hero in this story is the person who called 911 at mcdonald's this morning. the real heroes everyday in our society are the women and men who put on uniforms like these and go out in our communities to keep us safe. this killer was not a hero. he should not be hailed. mr. thompson, i understand, was laid to rest earlier today in minnesota in a private setting. as the conversation continues about this case, let's be mindful not to dehumanize him. and make him just an avatar of
1:06 am
the system that is disliked by many. he was a father. he was a husband end. and he did not deserve to die like this on a sidewalk in new york city while law enforcement was present this evening. law enforcement works best when it works together. in this case, you have the new york police department working together with the altoona police department, working together with the state police and the partners at the federal level as well. everyone came together to solve this case and keep the public safe. again, when i asked my fellow pennsylvanians if you have any information regarding the suspect or his travels throughout pennsylvania, please share those tips with us immediately. with that, i want to thank district attorney weeks for his important work today and invite him to the microphone to say a
1:07 am
few words. speak i think, governor shapiro. that evening, everyone, i would echo that the government sediments law enforcement works at its best when it works together and i would like to also thank district attorney seidel. he and his staff came down from manhattan office today in record time to assist us at the altoona police department and as the governor stated, the state police, they altoona police department, of the and new york city police department township and the county sheriff's department and all agencies work together today to do what needed to be d. i would often brag about how the commitment t and allaire county isn't afraid to say something to report a crime to contact local law enforcement.
1:08 am
and i have often touted how they make the community or someone else a safer place to live. today i cement a resident from altoona and the altoona police department help make new york city a safer place and help kick start the process to seek justice for a senseless killing. so again, i would like to thank everybody and it is my honor to introduce de deputy commissionet this time. speaker thank you mr. d.a. on behalf of of new york city mayor eric adams, my boss, polie commissioner jessica tisch, i want to extend once again that appreciation to the altoona police department and your leadership team, of the federal, state, local authority to make authorities because coshow and especially the customer at mcdonald's that seen something, said something to
1:09 am
mcdonald's employee that called 911 and put this individual and the sight of the restaurant. the men and women behind me, the detectives, some of these detectives behind me haven't been home since tuesday when this incident happened. they have been working tirelessly around the clock. that is dedication, their commitment to bring this individual to justice is standing behind me. on behalf of the mayor and the police commissioner, they send their thanks and appreciation to you as well. here is a message to the criminal element that think they want to commit a crime in new york city and cross state lines, county lines. message is very clear: police commissioner tisch's police department will find you and bring it to justice.
1:10 am
just look behind me. thank you. >> i think with that we will be happy to take a few questions. >> we will defer that to the altoona police. [inaudible] >> detail in the affidavit about what happened and do you know how that played out? >> sure, it was a peaceful arrest first and foremost. the officer quickly recognized the male as the suspect from the shooting. and within several minutes, seconds of the first contact, he
1:11 am
had asked the suspect if he had been in new york city recently. and that really invoked a physical reaction from the suspect. he became visibly nervous kind of shaking at that question. he didn't really answer directly. so, that statement alone really said a lot. the suspect didn't have to say a lot after that question to show, you know, he was very nervous at that point. [inaudible] >> officer fry is on my left. officer fry, step this way a little bit and his officer that was with him. >> [inaudible] >> patrolman fry, whenever we got on the scene they met, we were able to pretty much find where he was at in the
1:12 am
restaurant. as soon as he pulled down his mask, we asked him to pull it down, my partner and i recognized him immediately just from what we saw in the media with videos. we didn't even think twice about it. we knew that was guy. he was very cooperative with us and didn't give us too many issues. once we found out his identity, we took it from there. >> [inaudible] >> i can't say i was expecting it by any means, but it feels good like that off at the street and especially to start my career this way, it feels pretty good. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> what is my own knowledge he hasn't.
1:13 am
>> was the gun on himself? >> we are still investigating how long in altoona and still a lot to do in the case. men and women behind me are assisting with that so we are still looking into it. >> i will ask the colonel of the pennsylvania state police to answer the question you just raised here. >> so there are a lot of things that need to be followed up in this investigation. certainly, there were a number of items found on this person in his backpack that have been inventoried. we have begun to do an analysis of those. there were written documents. there are electronic devices in the process of being downloaded, search warrants are obtained. so over the next hours and days, those efforts will continue. we will take a closer look at all of the information that we can glean from that regarding
1:14 am
his activities up until and during the time of the homicide. his flight from new york and we know he has been in pennsylvania, excuse me, several days. so. so part of that investigation will focus on trying to retrace his steps. we have identified businesses, for example, he frequented in this area. and so all of that is becoming kind of a mountain of evidence that has to be analyzed and looked at. i'm confident we will have a much better idea of his activities over the past number of days in new york and pennsylvania. additionally, we are also trying to determine that we don't have another actor or an accomplice el there. so this information will not be will help prove whether that existed and whether their intended targets. so a lot of questions out there not answered yet but we have a
1:15 am
lot of information we can examine that hopefully will give us some of those pieces of data that we need. you asked or someone asked about the interview, he was initially cooperative. he is not now. so he has been arraigned and transported and will be securely housed pending the filing of additional charges in new york. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> yes. we are not going to get into any more details at this time. we would like to hear from any pennsylvanian or pittsburgh or with any sightings or dealings . that is why i specifically asked for people with tips to share with us. >> reporter: [inaudible] what happens and how long does it take?
1:16 am
>> that answer depends. once the charging documents are filed in the state of new york, we will file a justice complaint against the defendant who we brought before common play judge. and then presented with the option to waive his extradition order to contest his extradition. if he waves his extradition, of course, we will make them available to nypd in manhattan, the district attorney's office able to arrange his transportation there. with a contest at that process takes between 30-45 days to do the requisite paperwork, but we did that all the time in our office and that is normal procedure. >> reporter: the backpack itself right now, is that in new york or the same one he had the time of that shooting in this backpack here, what was
1:17 am
found inside the gun v gun the n silencer? >> i am not going to speculate the interpretation of the evidence but i will rely on the officer is doing the investigation to complete that and reach the conclusions. >> reporter: at this point, he is a suspect -- can we call him a suspect? >> yes, as we confirmed that his preliminary arraignment with the permission of district attorney silo, we expect charges to be filed for with an obviously i'm not going to speculate on the timing that tonight or tomorrow or sometime in the near future for homicide. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> so, at this point, we will not comment on that.
1:18 am
i mentioned there is a lot of information to go through. certainly, everything will be shared with nypd but other information really doesn't pertain to that investigation. again, focuses on here in pennsylvania and other travels. all of that, hopefully will shine more light on it. there is some information that gives us some insight into his thinking but again, all part of the ongoing investigation. >> as far as they nypd, we will not be commenting on the investigation steps here. the next couple of days, they will be media availability and commissioner tish will update and joe kenny will update but i will be happy to talk about commissioner tish and her and then thank them for their service. with mere commissioner tish.
1:19 am
>> i cannot, we do have a good idea of that but part of the ongoing investigation. >> reporter: [inaudible] can you be more specific? >> again, i will jump in. it is part of the ongoing investigation. yes, we have a good idea how he got from philadelphia to pittsburgh. but there are some gaps in time. before we start laying out a timeline of his travel, we really need to work through all of that. so we know at some point, it is likely he was in a variety of locations across the state to include philadelphia, pennsylvania. again, that will all be a part
1:20 am
of -- logically, he's caught in altoona so he was in these locations first. but again, the timeline of that will be part of the ongoing investigation. >> reporter: the past few days, he has been on the run. how did you manage to detect him? >> again part of the ongoing investigation when we determine where he has been where he stayed, we may be able to answer some of those questions right now, i will tell you based on everything we have seen, very careful with trying to stay low profile and avoid cameras and not all that successfully in some cases, but that was certainly the effort he was making. he took steps to try to avoid
1:21 am
detection with electronic devices. all part of the investigation, but clearly somebody that was very security conscious and tried to avoid somebody. >> with somebody not named by the law enforcement? >> i'm not aware of a criminal history. >> it was mentioned -- can you speak more about the evidence? >> no, not at this point. i have spoken generally what is there but at this point, everything remains under investigation and we will have much more information in new york will certainly have information for you in the future. >> reporter: how confident are you that there are no other suspects? where is there an accomplice? >> we will still campus and we will still investigate.
1:22 am
like i said before we will provide an update in a couple of days by the police come commissioner in new york. i will say this though if anybody has any information that they think will help this case, please contact the to point 1-800-577-tips. all will be confident. >> they called 911? >> that is my understanding, y yes. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> my understanding and i was just confirming that my understands the employee became suspicious and thought recognized and wanted someone to check it out further. yes, i'm sorry, the customer recognized, notified the employee and wanted someone to
1:23 am
check it out further. >> reporter: can you refer to what restaurant it was, the one on plank road? >> i am not familiar with the address. >> reporter: the suspect. [inaudible] >> again, we are not going to talk about what was found in the bag. we have accurately catalogued everything that was in there and it will be available for you and the future. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> i stand by all the comments i made but i will not comment more at this time. and my argument for, thank you. >> he will lightly be taken to state correctional institution.
1:24 am
>> reporter: [inaudible] >> violence can never be used to address political differences or to address a substantive difference or to try to prove some ideological point. that is not what we do in a civilized society. that was true in butler. that was true in new york city, and it is true anywhere. that is not how you make progress in this country. the person, the suspect here who shot a fat ceo and killed that ceo is a coward, not a hero. and we need to make sure in this country, we get back to having a
1:25 am
civil discourse about our differences. and that is an important lesson coming out of pennsylvania, and it is one that i think the rest of the nation needs to hear as well. on the law-enforcement side, i will tell you i am incredibly proud of the pennsylvania police and local police in butler and in altoona who responded in a way that kept others safe and saved other lives. that was true of the fairgrounds in butler and it is true today in out in. had that local pennsylvania not spoken up in that wonderful police officer been on the job not acted calmly and swiftly, who knows what could have happened. i think the lesson is coming out of pennsylvania at that violence is not a way to answer questions and address problems. and that we have the gift of law enforcement here in the commonwealth and we care deeply

about the safety and well-being of our fellow pennsylvanians and fellow americans. >> thank you all for having me. >> laura: that was the news conference from pennsylvania on the crime suspect in the murder of united health care ceo, brian thompson. here to impact all of this, andrew stoltmann, james fitzgerald the cohost of "the color red" podcast. your reaction to what you heard tonight? >> there will be sent me of the evidence and you take a look at the stuff they already have and they just started investigation. they have the dna evidence a manifesto from his backpack. most importantly, they now have what they believe is the murder weapon, the ghost gun and the

silencer. fbi is testing that gun to make sure it matches the shell casings used in the killing. i think this defendant is in a lot of trouble and they will have a search warrant for his phone, computer, compa apartmend everything else. i think he is in a lot of trouble. >> laura: mr. fitzgerald this is what we have about luigi mangione, graduated from the top of the class and stellar student in baltimore and went on to study engineering, advanced took, master's degree in science. "the angle" spoke to a number of classmates who were all shocked to hear about his arrest. they told us he was smart and "chill." when set i knew him polite engineering students who usually carried a smile. he had a nice genuine group of friends who were studious and a little removed from the bar and party scene. externally, he seem like someone who would start a nonprofit and read manifesto's.

another one told us, "i wanted to set him up with a great friend because he would be a great boyfriend." and also worked in stanford university 29186 months at a summer program for college, incoming college students, high school seniors where apparently he was well-liked there as well. your take tonight. >> there is some semblance of this guy to ted kaczynski that hannah palmer with manifesto grooming at the top of his class, but this particular person is much more outgoing and socially oriented than ted ever was in the indicator there is a back surgery he may have had and tilted him towards anger at the medical insurance companies. interestingly backhand 'exceeds turned down for operation and decided to kill people in this guy is an accolade of ted

kaczynski read his manifesto and quoted from it. once again, a couple of years after dad and his offenses, we see people that see ted kaczynski as a hero but he was a shooter of a ceo in new york. >> laura: andrew, on this point, again, extremely bright, extremely studious, well-liked, and also according to one report in "the new york post," harvard of recent age anticapitalist views. medical industry views. wad of that? >> i think it is a mode of. i think they will dig into that and i think there was a views fox news reported on he gave a view on the ted kaczynski book and basically adhering to some of the principles. a good prosecutor will take that and he will mold it and that will be the motive for doing the

crime. every jury wants to see a mode of. that is the sort of thing a juror can look at, wait a minute, that is why this smart, guy, by all accounts smart buy will do murder. he will be charged with first-degree murder and i think he is in a lot of trouble. >> laura: james, on this note of being able to evade the police on the days he did, what do you think about that given the fact he committed this murder allegedly, got away on the bike, went in the park, got new york, in a cab and he was able to get in the park and disappear for a while. is that surprise to you give them the surveillance we have in new york? >> it is surprising, but he could have easily changed his identity, a different color of mask, sweatshirt, 30, whatever. but this goes back to profilers and analysts look at which is
1:31 am
preoffense behavior and post up behavior and he was planned a week or more before this homicide. and of course we saw the homicide on video and we know how that went down but his plan broke apart into post-op offense days and five days afterwards. if he held up in a safe house air pmp or hotel room, he could have been out of sight and out of mind much longer but traipsing across pennsylvania 1i-80 on the turnpike and not too far from idaho university by drupal killer live as the crow flies less than 50 miles i believe. coincidence, of course, by iron that part of eastern pennsylvania and both of these areas come to play. >> laura: the last address in honolulu. he went to school in baltimore at the ivy league institution. ends up at stanford for a while.
1:32 am
at some point, there seems to have been a turn in him, given what we have uncovered so far. do you believe when all is said and done and who knows when we will find out, we will find there is a personal event, medical event that may have set this otherwise and looks like fairly brilliant mind off? >> laura, that is a great question and i can guarantee investigators are talking to the family, his family and trying to see what triggered him to do what he did and veer off at this path. everybody says he has a bright guy and clearly he has, but as a killer maybe he's not as bright as he thinks he is. taking off the mask at the starbucks counter to flirt with a girl was now a good idea. not throwing away the gun, which likely the number one piece of evidence in this case behind dna, not a bright decision. so yes, this kid is smart but he made some mistakes and prosecutors are looking to see
1:33 am
what is that triggering event that took him from a good life to first-degree murder? >> laura: james, and yet, authorities are saying the investigation is continuing not just into his personal background, by anyone else in the network that he may be engaging with on a regular basis? we have not talked much about that, but these anticapitalist groups if he was in one of them online, how important would that be in flushing this out? >> very important periods social media footprints as far back as they contract it will produce a lot of the evidence. of late can be used in court to further strengthen the case there. but there is no doubt some ashley strohmier, live in new york. firefighters are battling a massive wildfire just north of pepperdine university in malibu, california. the so-called franklin fire
