changed the face of the united states. >> dana: beneath the sheer numbers are individual tragedies. case in point and illegal venezuelan migrant accused in a drunk driving crash that killed a 7-year-old girl. why he was allowed out on the streets. >> bill: brooke taylor is live in dallas as we begin a new hour. good morning. >> hi, bill. yeah, this family told me that they were getting ready to celebrate christmas. they were picking out gifts for their little 7-year-old girl. instead they are forced to plan a funeral. the suspect in all this an illegal migrant who already served time for a family assault. instead of getting deported he was released back into the community. now he is accused of getting behind the wheel drinking and driving in a crash that killed this 7-year-old girl ivory smith in the houston area. on december 1st she was in the back seat of the car with her mom driving when deputies say a drunk driver slammed into them.

the man is charged with intoxicated manslaughter. ice sources tell me he is an illegal migrant from venezuela who crosseed in 2021. in 2024 he was put on an ice hold and the felony was dropped to a misdemeanor. he was turned over to ice after the conviction but lifted the hold. we wanted to know why. because of prosecutorial discretion they tell me that because of privacy they can't tell us why they lifted that ice hold instead of deporting him. look at what that decision cost them 2 1/2 months later and now accused of killing ivory, a second grader with a whole future ahead of her. >> and he was released on a hold and he was assaulted a family member and now he has killed our family member. we just want her here. we want to see those smiles back on her face, back on our

family's face and it will never be the same. >> the mother just devastated in denial. her sister there tells me she is grappling with the death of her daughter but also recovering from her own injuries. she has been released from the hospital but that mother there has to relearn how to walk. bill and dana. >> bill: tough story. thank you for that in dallas. we'll follow it. >> everyone prioritized public safety threats and national security threats. i'm not surprised that mayor adams is coming to the table. i think his number one responsibility is protection of his communities. i'm shocked that other mayors and governors who want to put roadblocks up. i can't believe any elected official does not want to present move public safety threats from their communities. >> dana: a meeting happening this afternoon. incoming border czar tom homan sitting down with new york's democratic mayor eric adams coming as the trump administration plans to deport

migrant criminals when it takes office. joining us now is fan favorite new york city council member vickie. mayor adams said i want to do this and city council said forget it. we'll never walk back sanctuary cities. >> well, cancel me. because i'm going to protect the people of this city and if you come into this country and this city and think you will harm innocent new yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers this is not the mayor you want to be in the city under. >> dana: the speaker of the city council had her spokesperson say this. council will not support actions to help the incoming presidential administration attempt to separate families and upend communities across our city. we'll defend local law and reject attempts by the mayoral administration to engage in further overreach to circumvent city law. how will this go down? >> you know, i always enjoy a good fight. so have at it, speaker adams.

because there is a new sheriff in town. you could say whatever you like and my city council has been guilty, guilty, guilty time and again going against the mayor constantly at every turn. she thinks she rules the roost. i know she is listening. she will hear this later and that's okay. because we've had enough. my city council is off the rails. and when we start to talk about money and we start to talk about crime and they still do not view these people who are 57,000 of them here in new york convicted felons, repeat offenders, listen. to my city council i say this. you know what? we're not banging down anybody's doors to take away family and kids, misinformation to use their word. everybody uses the new word now, buzz word misinformation. the misinformation is that tom hoe man will come here. he will meet with the mayor whether you like it or not and

what is going to happen is new york is going to get back on its two feet again as it needs to be. these people cannot rule our city. and by that i mean the venezuelan gangs, i mean the prostitution rings going on. we have serious, serious issues here that they want to just continue to turn a blind eye not only the blind eye, but funding. funded with more new york city tax dollars. >> bill: dana made the point last hour donald trump is giving eric adams cover. if you go back to the dinner here in new york two months ago when the al smith dinner was eric adams was on the dais and trump said i told you if you start talking about illegal immigration they'll come after you. i'm not making that connection but he did during the night. the other day on abc eric adams was talking about the possibility of switching political parties. is that how much center left democrats have changed? >> i won't say that he will change parties.

i think he is entertaining the idea because why. he is not radical enough for the progressives, he is just not. so we have talked about it many times as far as -- he was a republican in the late 90s and early 2000s. why not revisit that? because you need to be center, center right, center left but in the center. most important of all, grow a spine. you need a strong backbone to carry this city. you need to stand up to the progressive left that's coming after you. they don't like you no matter what you do. so you know what? think about it. think hard about it. because you got an election coming up in 25. >> dana: a quick answer. do you think a republican could win in the new york city mayor's race next cycle? >> that's a tough question. >> dana: i'm good at those. >> that's good. i would like to say with a full

d.c. f.b.i. director christopher wray says he will step down from that job at the end of president biden's term. meanwhile kash patel is trump's pick to lead the agency next. david spunt is live from the d.c. bureau to help break the news yesterday. how are you today? >> the f.b.i. director made the announcement at his annual town hall. many joined from across the country. wray are step down likely in january before trump officially takes the oath of office. >> this is not. our dedication to independents and objectivity and our defense of the rule of law, those fundamental aspects of who we are must never change. >> when you really look at it. wray didn't have much of a choice given the fact that president-elect trump already named a new f.b.i. director kash patel. if wray stayed until january 20th trump would have fired him. wray is seven years into a ten year term. republican appointed by

president trump in 2017 after trump fired james comey. wray took over during a tumultuous time at the bureau. he was known for calling every department of a police officer who died in the line of duty. now trump posted on social media saying wray's resignation will quote end the weaponization of what has been known as the united states department of injustice, as i mentioned he nominated kash patel, a former aide. patel has been a critic of the f.b.i. meeting on capitol hill all week the lawmakers hoping to get confirmed. >> i will be ready to go on day one. >> patel says his meetings have been positive and given that republicans will control the senate he is not expected to have any major hurdles getting confirmed. it is not done until it's done. >> bill: thank you, david spunt. new fox polling shows the

incoming president is going to ride a wave of enthusiasm. results show that more americans say his victory leaves them feeling hopeful about what lies ahead. polling found 60% of americans say it is extremely important for trump to focus on lowering prices when he gets into office. karl rove fox news contributor, former white house deputy chief of staff. new column "wall street journal." good morning to you. the reason why they say price is because of this. call for number one. the economy is still the number one issue in america. we talked about it for a year leading up to the election and that's what they are telling us again today. what do you think about that and the optimism we found in the survey? >> it shows the people deeply concerned about the economy, inflation and direction of the country and border are now feeling optimistic because they have somebody coming into office that shares their views. this was also reflected in a survey conducted by the national federation of independent business of small business

owners. do they expect the economy to improve? it jumped 41 points in one month to the highest level since june of 2020. do you think this is a good time to expand your small business? plus eight points the highest janz june of 2021. expect sales to rise up 18 points. the highest since february of 2020 before he went into lockdown over covid. do you plan capital outlays in the next six months? the highest level since june of 2022. there will be practical effects of people feeling better about the future of the economy, small business people are going to invest in their business and expand it and consumers will feel more comfortable making out lays and helping to propel the economy. >> dana: there is a process that is a formal one that you write about in your column today by the election. the harris campaign are still in

denial. what did you find? >> well, i was taken by this. there is a thing called the institute of politics at harvard. since 1972 it has had a conference after the election called the campaign managers' conference. they get the managers of the respective presidential campaigns to talk about their campaigns. they published the transcript. this is like political crack cocaine to me. raw, emotional. it is great read. well, this year's was no exception. it started off by the chief of staff to kamala harris saying they had run a flawless campaign. in my column i talk about the four major problems that the campaign -- harris campaign had. granted the biggest problem was a fifth one, joe biden. very unpopular, approval ratings in the dumps. the major issues he was in the 30s approval on the major issues, nonetheless i write in my column about the harris campaign and four great mistakes

that mean it was not flawless. >> bill: they aren't taking any blame. just about anywhere. karl, want you to weigh in on this. not so much a commentary on what's in the sky above new jersey more a commentary about what our federal officials are saying and what they aren't. jeff van drew with us today. >> i hope they know more than they're telling us. it is disrespectful to the public and to congress. it is about time they leveled with the truth. hopefully they'll give us some information this afternoon. but even if they do, it's like a month too late. >> bill: i know you did not write about that. maybe a column in the future. what do you think about this? you had the briefing from the pentagon yesterday. it seems like there is a lot of fill in the blank answers because they aren't given. >> yeah. look, we should be disturbed about it because a large number of drones were seen over our military installations in the

tide water of virginia. i think it was yesterday the u.s. arrested a chinese national boarding a plane to china flying a drone over the vandenberg air force base launch site where spacex and u.s. government does a lot of launches in california. who is behind this and what is their purpose? i hope our -- both our government intelligence agencies and our government military departments and our government investigation departments are looking into this. something is going on. people are surveilling places that could be critical if somebody wanted to undertake some bad acts. can you imagine what kind of finger pointing there would be in suddenly there was an attack by a terrorist on vandenberg air force base? how did you get the information that allowed to identify the critical targets and surveil this and figure out how to make your way into the installation and cause damage? something is going on and we better get to the bottom of it.

>> dana: the strange thing is the lack of information. if you remember the chinese spy balloon. biden administration ignored it for a while and said it is no big deal and finally we'll shoot it down. they don't have a great track record on this and seem not to even want to solve problems. but because congressman van drew said that it was iran and then the pentagon says no, it's not. >> who is it? someone today should say it's china and force the pentagon to answer that? >> absolutely. this is disturbing and, you have know, there are people looking into this in the media. but i hope to gosh our government is looking into it. this could be a grave threat to the security of the united states. >> bill: i -- >> can i go back for a minute? i want to go back for a minute to the question about the polling that we started with about how everybody is hopeful and relieved, etc. ? i want to point out something. 54% say they're hopeful.

>> bill: 10:30 in new york. a lot of news out of syria today. we're waiting for more information on an american who has been held captive for seven months. the israelis are hitting targets again today in and near damascus. that totals several hundred over the past couple of days. there are significant concerns about chemical weapons. former deputy national security advisor k.t. mcfarland with me now. you know the topic well. welcome back. what is top of mind for you as we await a lot of news on what happens next in that country? >> figure out where the chemical weapons are, secure them, and make sure that either the syrian

government, whatever that government is or an international organization or somebody gets their hands on those chemical weapons and dismantles them because what will happen, which is what happened at the fall of the soviet union, is the military drifts away. they leave those places. sometimes they leave the weapons in place. sometimes they take the weapons with them. then sell them on the global international black-market. it is really critical in these hours after this government has fallen to secure those chemical weapons and make sure that they are secure, dismantled and do not fall in the hands of the international black-market. which would love nothing more than to get its hands on sophisticated chemical weapons. >> bill: the headline from the "new york post." israel does the world a service by hitting assad's chemical weapons cache. think about that now. they moved when there was a window of opportunity, k.t. >> yeah. it wasn't just the chemical weapons.

they moved to take out a lot of the strategic weapons, the missiles. a prudent move for israel. everybody is trying to figure out how the dust will settle israel went in and eliminated syrian military and navy. whatever part of the syrian government that could potentially be used against israel coming down the road. nobody knows what the new syrian government will do. are they going to be? do they want to make war on israel, peace with israel, fight each other? we don't know. israel did the prudent surgical move. no civilian casualties as far as i can understand and destroyed what they had to destroy. >> bill: ayatollah said the plain planner and commander in the united states and zionist regime blaming the united states and israel for assad's ouster. he got cover from iran and russia for decades and that support just dried up, k.t. >> yeah, why did it dry up?

because iran was -- had been done in. proxies done in by israel. against actually the advocacy of the biden administration who told israel don't do this and that. israel thank goodness didn't listen and destroyed hamas and decapitated and really greatly reduced the power of hezbollah. where does that leave iran? it doesn't have its protective shield anymore. now that iran is kicked out of syria it doesn't have that protective shield. so if you are a mullah in iran and looking what happened in syria in a matter of days, hours even, the assad regime crumb lid. they have to think will it happen to us especially as iran looks to a trump presidency. which will reimpose sanctions and do what he did before, try to bankrupt iran. the leaders of iran have to think our natives might get restless. maybe we better worry about what will happen at home. yeah, ayatollah has to blame and

america and israel. the fact is he is scared. >> bill: i want to squeeze in one more thing. these hostages, how many are alive, we do not know. we hope for the best, maybe dozens possibly. here is "wall street journal." hamas concedes on israeli troops in gaza raising hopes for a hostage deal. do you see that happening? >> this is the trump effect. hezbollah trying to make peace with israel. hamas has now said let's do a deal on the hostage. none of this was happening before president trump was reelected now everybody in the region is scrambling because president trump has said those hostages better be home before i take office or there will be hell to pay. i've known him for a long time. he doesn't use language like this unless he means it. he is fiercely protective of americans and the hostages. hamas better pay attention. they will rue the day they try to cross donald trump.

and social security. wants to lower corporate tax rate to 15% but only for the companies making products in the united states and firms have started to move production. >> it really is a very, very big positive for business. honestly, there is a lot of issues with china in addition to the tariffs. you have know, since xi has taken over it is not as friendly an environment to work in as it once was. we've had terrific supply chain disruptions. >> so even as businesses with a chile relationship with the incoming president start warming up meta donated $1 million to the inauguration of president-elect trump and this comes a few weeks after the founder mark zuckerberg had dinner and meeting at mar-a-lago and he and others sense the president-elect's laser focus. >> when we left we didn't have any of these problems.

nationally because my experience in wisconsin is that when democrats build a big tent that fights for working people no matter what they look like or where they live in rural areas, cities, suburbs and small towns alike, we can win elections and earn trust and show that we mean it by making a difference in people's lives. i think that's the essential thing. in this election democrats lost the votes of people earning less than $50,000 a year. a lot of those folks were telling us they couldn't afford the cost of groceries and felt they weren't getting the help they needed. they want a government on their side. the democratic party is on their side and we have so show it and fight like we need it and demonstrate we're on the side of working people in every part of this country. >> dana: do you think the white house was wrong to say inflation wasn't happening and said it was a high class problem? >> if you look at the data, there were a lot of things that started under trump with democratic votes in congress and continued and expanded under biden at the height of the

pandemic to help make sure folks had enough money in their wallet to put food on their table. then that support went away. again because republicans in congo posed extending it. so a lot of working folks felt like they had support and it disappeared. at the same time prices went up. it doesn't matter if the u.s. cpi is going down faster than the other g7 countries. if you have to break pills in half or >> dana: do you believe in the inflation reduction act? i want to use the time wisely. do you believe the inflation reduction act helped fuel relationship like larry summers would say? >> it played a critical role in helping us out of an economic hole and i think driving prices down further for more people was essential. >> dana: but when you had economists saying that is not true. what can you bring to the tenol that is different on the economy that might be able to win back

the voters you lost? >> i think right now trump is planning a multi trialian tax break for billionaires. our focus is on working people and the economy that works for them. what democrats fight for in the next couple of years will show whose side democrats is on. you need smart economic policies that deliver. >> dana: there will be a big fight about taxes and i think they would certainly push back on the billionaire piece. final question, do you support joe biden's pardoning of his son, hunter? >> i think we're in a moment where trump is promising as part of his promise of his campaign to use the federal government's power to go after political enemies and what president biden was facing is what so many people will face now how do you prepare for a moment when the government is using its power to crush opposition as opposed to serve the rule of law and serve a country that works for everyone.
