>> sandra: not determined to operate by any foreign entity. did they fly a drone alongside the drones and -- i mean -- >> john: they are not saying. >> sandra: more information would be better. john kirby is still speaking and taking questions at the white house. i'm sandra smith in new york. a group of new york and new jersey senators are now writing to dhs, the fbi, and faa out of quote urgent concern over those drones. first was the lack of answers making lawmakers livid, now it is the mixed messages that they are getting. the pentagon denying claims those drones are from foreign adversaries. you just her john kirby do so, as well. the fbi says they really don't know where they are coming from, so that leads to a big question: how does the u.s. spends $900 billion on defense and intelligence and still not know anything, or at least share anything with us? new jersey governor phil murphy says his hands are tied.

listen. >> we don't have that authority, and the feds have that authority, the faa has most of the jurisdiction here. i'd like to see them play a more robust role. i wouldn't be opposed to that. let me put it that way. >> john: like sergeant schultz and hogan's heroes. i know nothing. speak with a new jersey status of the man who called yesterday's briefing amateur hour. nate foy has the growing fallout in the garden state but first lucas tomlinson with more on the biden administration's response or lack thereof to these drone sightings. >> we just heard from white house national security council spokesperson john kirby before we went to break and he seemed to be downplaying these reports of mysterious drones, saying most of the reports they looked into turned out to be manned aircraft. in other words, planes or helicopters. and the pentagon says they are not even looking into the matter. they are leaving it up to local law enforcement to decide. the one thing they are ruled out for sure, any kind of iranian mothership offshore.

>> these are not u.s. military drones. again, this is being investigated by local law enforcement. what our initial assessment here is that these are not drones or activities coming from a foreign entity or adversary. there is no iranian ship off the coast of the united states. >> now john this spring the head of the senate armed services committee wrote an op-ed in "the washington post" warning about drones inside the united states saying u.s. military can hardly track anything other than commercial aircraft, let me read from a piece of it here, says, quote, our nation lacks adequate drone protection capability. we still rely on early warning radars that served us so well during the cold war. almost none of our devasting military bases have the centers to identify small drones. if we fixed our tracking problem, a second issue would arise: u.s. agencies lack clear lines of authority but which agency is responsible for

drone sightings in a single night, that is the most we heard from that briefing yesterday in a single night, but many are also very frustrated with governor phil murphy for making comments like this. >> based on everything we know, there is no public safety risk that we are aware of. on the other hand, is it frustrating to not have more answers? is it frustrating to not have a source for these things? yes. >> so several people who attended that state briefing yesterday said how can you say there is no known threat when you don't know anything? today, state senator joba nacchio is calling for help from the bullpen in the form of president-elect donald trump, whose bedminster club is in the vicinity of the drones. he wrote in a letter to trump that reads in part, quote, please use whatever resources you have as you await your inauguration to gather any information you can to share with the citizens of new jersey so we can move forward on this important issue. our current administration is failing us in this effort.

i trust you will not. there was more frustration by new jersey officials that the fbi didn't attend yesterday's briefing. >> i am incredibly disappointed by the briefing. while appreciate the effort done by the state police and homeland security, the fbi is the one that is supposed to be leading this investigation, and they are m.i.a. >> so it is not just local mayors who feel left in the dark by the fbi. all four u.s. senators from new york and new jersey have officially requested a briefing as soon as possible, not only with the fbi, but also dhs and the faa to learn how they are coordinating with state and local law enforcement to finally get some answers here. we will send it back to you, sandra. >> sandra: just bizarre. so much of this. nate foy, thank you. john? >> john: republican new jersey state a sentiment brian bergen, former military helicopter pilot involved in the eating yesterday. that they thought the governor was going to come to but didn't. you said after that meeting that

you had gone to it to have your concerns allayed but came out of the meeting with even more concerns than you had going in. what are you thinking today? >> that's 100% true. i'm no better off today than yesterday. that meeting was a joke, a total waste of time, and it showed the ineptitude that is going on right now in this investigation. you know what we need right now? we need leadership. somebody needs to step up and lead. governor murphy pointing his finger towards the federal government, it is not going to cut it right now. he has resources at his disposal's that he needs to put into action. the state police, who i learned in the meeting yesterday, had a helicopter hovering above one of these drones and chose not to follow it back to where it is coming from. and he also has a national guard, which he can mobilize to figure out what the hell is going on. we need leadership in the state of new jersey and it is complete leave void of that right now. >> john: he says his hands are tied to the federal government. i don't know if you cite a few moments ago, john kirby over at the white house said this about

the drone invasion, listen. >> the deferment of homeland security and the fbi or investor getting these sightings and working closely with state and local law enforcement to provide resources using numerous detection methods to understand their origin. using very sophisticated electronic detection technologies provided by federal authorities, we have not been able to come and neither have state or local law enforcement authorities, corroborate any of the reported visual sightings. to the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that were being offer operated lawfully. >> john: what he is basically saying there is these are not the drones that you are looking for. i mean, what -- >> that guy is an idiot. that i can tell you right now. because the kernel of the state police told the members of the state legislature that one of his helicopters was hovering above a 6-foot wide drone, and

he landed that helicopter because he felt unsafe for his pilots. i am a former apache helicopter pilot and a member of the new jersey state legislature, and i have seen these things in my own community. that guy, i don't even know his name, who was on here a couple minutes ago, is a fool if he is going to say there is no issue. >> john: he is a former rear admiral in the u.s. navy named john kirby, so helicopter pilot against the admiral. go-ahead. >> well, you know, go army, beat navy, that's what i would say. >> john: frustration does seem to be reaching the highest levels. this is what new jersey senator cory booker said yesterday. listen. >> i have been a little frustrated there hasn't been enough transparency, letting people know what is happening. is allowing a lot of potentially misinformation to spread, or at least fear. we should know what is going on over our skies. i've asked for more information. >> john: you would think after the chinese balloon incident

last year people would take is a little more seriously in terms of investigation. >> yeah, we 100% should. we need people to take action. on the segment before i got here, somebody said it is impossible to track hundreds and hundreds of these drones for our state police. we don't need to track hundreds or thousands. we only need to track one. and find out who is at fault for one of these things. i'm telling you, it's a big issue. i hope at the end of the day we find out that it was nothing, some commercial application being tested, and this is a big to-do about nothing, but right now, everybody, senators, assembly people, u.s. senators, are calling for action, and people are not making enough of a difference. before the same gentleman you mentioned earlier, he said we are being resources, state was being resourced with this technology. in the briefing that we were at, state police said they were going to be getting some new technology from the department

obviously this is upstate new york. frigid conditions. how long is this going to last? >> this is thankfully one of the shorter events we have seen since thanksgiving. this is excited to taper by the time we get to tomorrow afternoon. this band off of lake erie starting to intensify, shift closer to buffalo this evening, shipped further back south and begin to fizzle by tomorrow morning, but not before we pick up another half a foot of snow along the i-90 across parts of western new york. we are watching watertown, too, tonight, i think that is where we could see big-time issues of lake ontario. >> sandra: a lot of weather coming our way and i was mentioning as we were walking in, we are entering the busy travel season right now, a lot of people are planning to fly, drive, what should they expect as far as travel conditions? >> the good news of lake effect snow is it is more of a regional impact. all of our regional airports are doing all right. yesterday we saw the biggest -- that big powerful storm pushing through, so now we are playing catch-up. we look at the end of the week, should be smooth sailing as far

believe grad turn into an accused killer? so on paper people are interested in this because mangione kind of look like he had it all, pictures online, smiling, active, climbing, going on vacation, now far from the beach behind bars in that orange jumpsuit, so back in 2022, mangione worked for a company based in san francisco. he had a big background in tech, john, went to upenn, smart in the classroom, then later moved to hawaii. that building on your right is where he reportedly lives, over near honolulu. than the 26-year-old says he had back surgery. it is important to say he says he had back surgery because we don't know, haven't been able to confirm it from anybody. investigators say he posted this text string online, that says he had a lot of pain, screws in his lower back, and then he went m.i.a. come according to his family. last month, mangione's mom calls the separate cisco police and tells investigators she hadn't heard from him since july.

just days after she filed that report, police tell me mangione was in new york city where authorities say he shot and killed brian thompson. photos like this of mangione, which are shirtless, it is kind of covered while he is hiking, but they have gone viral because people think he is very good looking. they are infatuated with this guy? why is it? a therapist tried to explain it. >> when it comes to a man who is capable of that kind of danger, it almost are minds be of the "american psycho" character of patrick bateman. he was very attractive to the public. i think that is the antihero that we are seeing paracter of . >> it is not just about his looks. people are calling him a hero for what he did, which is disturbing to many, doxxing other self-care ceos in new york city. we blurred the faces but those are wanted posters across the big apple. each has a face of a health care ceo with their information on it. brian thompson's face is crossed off with an x because he has been taken out. it is really a sad situation,
