we just got a briefing from fbi, dhs and faa officials who reiterated that some of these reported sightings are manned aircraft. and they said there's been no criminal activity, foreign actor or national security threat identified in the ongoing investigation. but still people and state leaders are demanding answers. new york governor kathy hochul saying today, quote, this has gone on too far after announcing that runways at an airport about 60 miles north of new york city if were shut down for about an hour on friday due to drone activity in the air space. she's also calling on congress to pass legislation to strengthen the faa's oversight of drones and give more authority to state and local agencies to investigate. and on thursday new jersey governor phil murphy wrote in a letter to president biden, quote, it has become apparent that more resources are need to fully understand what is behind this activity. murphy went on to say in his

seemed to be in the last several weeks. arthel: okay. is a couple other questions then, excuse me. would such military training immediate the perhaps take place in heavy, populated areas to mimic or simulate real world situations? and then secondly, if you do both of these for me at one time, if this is a military operation, how can the government tell the american public without also telling our adversaries? >> arthel, in those same air space areas that military train, he was some populated areas if those the aircraft are at the right altitude in order to do what they need to do other populated areas in testing and training without the disquieting type of activities that have now caused some level of panic amongst the american public. as far as up communication goes, the government always when they are operating something has a public affairs plan so that they
12:12 pm
can clearly and concisely convey what is going on so we don't see type of concern or growing panic that we've seen in the last few weeks. the fact that they haven't ruled out such a plan is indicative of the fact that these are not u.s. military assets. arthel: aver okay. let me play some quick sound on drone expert, his take on how the u.s. has fallen behind in military intelligence technology. let's take a listen. >> our military used to odom nate the drone air -- to dominate the drone air space. but all this technology is more accessible than ever, and we've let china lap us because of our archaic laws in the u.s. that have damaged our domestic drone industry. we need to invest more, and the reason we're having these issues and semi people don't know what's going on is because we haven't made the proper investment in our counter-drone technology and drone technology space that's needed right now. arthel: okay. so short time but lots of questions.
12:13 pm
do you agree that, and if so, is it too late to catch up? and meantime, i want you to address that we just heard eric mention this, how president-elect trump has apparently been on record saying shoot down the drones. is that something that's even possible? >>s the absolutely true that in the last couple of decades we've seen the increase or proliferation in drone activity or drone technology, and to some extent we in the united states have fallen behind. specifically related to shooting down these drones, the most effective way to get to the bomb of what has been going on -- to the bottom of what has been going on is to track from the point of departure or origin or follow them to their destination. the fact that the we hear dismissive communications from the federal government and the white house without actually doing the most basic things of tracking down the points of origin and destination is causing some of this concern or panic because they're shrugging their shoulders and promising us there's no threat when the reality is they're also telling

12:15 pm
challenges of this are proliferating. we have a federal government that's responsible for our national air space, and the fact that this has been going on for several weeks without their ability to communicate or understand what is going if on is indicative of a lax daze call or negligent federal government. arthel: i have to leave it there, general. thank you as always. thank you so much. >> thanks, arthel. go, navy. arthel: go, navy. we're going to be way ahead of a.i. arthel: president-elect trump is poised to loosen the reins on artificial intelligence when he takes office, promising to immediately repeal a biden executive order that imposed constraints for a.i. he also has created a new czar dedicated to a.i. and cryptocurrency. right now to discuss all of this we're bringing in satya that wouldman, senior vice president of government affairs at americans for responsible innovation. he's also a senior fellow at foundation for american innovation. so, satya, we're going to get to that executive order in just a second, but i have a couple of overview questions for you. if crypto was a fringe, a niche investment, does president-elect trump's interest in cryptocurrency make it mainstream and a wise investment? >> well, good afternoon, arthel. good with to be with you. i'm not in a position to say whether it's a wise investment. i think it speaks to president-elect trump's

initiative to allow all kinds of technologies to bloom here in the u.s. as opposed to china as you pointed out in that clip. if i don't know whether -- how crypto is going to be sort of metabolized into our economic system over time, but i thinkable shows an openness to new ideas and letting a how flowers bloom and allow innovators and entrepreneurs to try new things. arthel: you know, still as we know crypto remains unregulated, and president-elect trump has named david sacks as a.i. and crypto czar. apparently, it's a part-time position. and sacks does not have to get confirmed by the senate, the way i understand it. if so again, i'm not asking you for investment tips because i know that's not your place, but just in terms of analysis, what might this mean for the immediate and long-term future of crypto? is it here to stay perhaps? >> i think what you're seeing in the selection of david sacks as well as the mom nomination --

nomination for sec chair paul atkins, these are people who are favorable to crypto. i think what the industry wants is some kind of regularization. to your point, i think the industry wants clear rules of the road that increase confidence, that increase investor trust is people are unlikely to be scammed, and those ventures that are acting in good faith can continue to grow. arthel: so back to the exbiorde. in october of 2023 president biden signed an executive order meant to promote, heir saying promote the safety of secure and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence within the federal government. and seven leading a.i. companies agreed to the guidelines to safely develop, safely develop a.i. still no federal regulations that specifically address a.i. now also, satya, reportedly the

trump administration will likely, i understand, have a more hands-off approach to the industry. so how does this sit with you? >> look, i think anyone who pretends to speak for the president is telling on themselves. but we can look to what he said, and i think we can even look to what he did in his first term. you know, a.i. did not start under the biden administration. there was extensive work done in trump one, an executive order, a number of initiatives to promote growth and innovation, and they used words like trustworthy and safe in those ec executive orders too. so i think president-elect trump, he's been publicly saying that he thinks a.i. is a superpower, but also it can be really scary. so you just had a segment with ambassador with done chang talking about can china. china poses a pretty significant national security risk when it comes to a.i. so what i'd like to see and i think we might if see is the u.s. leading in development of technical standards.

these are not regulations, but we need standards to show the world so that other countries will adopt u.s. principles, u.s. technical standards not because they're our friends, because they have an incentive. it's in their interests to do it. i think you'll see a continuation of that first trump term of american leadership. i think president-elect trump wants to be the leader of the world many in a.i. but we have to get serious about the national security risks that are implicated as a.i. matures and is built out into our critical infrastructure. arthel: uh-huh. thank you for your analysis on that, satya. good to see you. take care. and we'll be right back. leo!
