i'm dana perino along with jeanine pirro, held for junior, jesse watters, and kat timpf. it is 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." donald trump holding his first news conference since winning the election. we have much, much more on that later, that first, there was a horrific shooting at a private christian school in madison, wisconsin, where three people are left dead, including the suspected shooter. garrett tenney is standing by live at the scene. catch us up. >> we are across the street from the reunification center just about half a mile down from the abundant life christian school, and we have seen kids as young as 5, 6, and seven years old driving here on buses where they are anxious and terrified parents are waiting to be reuni. this is a small private christian school, k-12, around 400 students. there's also a preschool on campus, and a little before

11:00 a.m. this morning, police say a student with a handgun opened fire, killing one teacher and another student, and injuring six other students before they were found dead when officers arrived. two of the injured students remain in life-threatening critical condition. police are not releasing any other information about the shooter where the victims, but so far shooter's family is cooperating with the investigation. we are told detectives carried out a search warrant at the shooter's home this afternoon as they try to piece together a timeline leading up to the shooting, and try to determine a motive for this horrific shooting just nine days before christmas. here is the mayor. >> i am on record that i think we need to do better in our country and our community to prevent gun violence. and i hope -- i hoped this day would never c come to madison. >> we are expecting to get another update from police here in the next couple of hours.

that bobby is a very rational guy. i found him to be very irrational. >> dana: the press, jesse, is finally going to be able to put on their running shoes and get ready, because with biden they haven't had to do anything over the past six months, maybe even a year. he hasn't done that much. if you look at the split screen between what biden did at the dnc annual christmas party and then trump, it's like a tale of two cities. you have a tent that is growing and people are jumping on board, and people are jumping overboard on the democratic side. it was sleepy and filled with regret and sadness. >> jesse: a lot of shrinkage, you may say, on the side. >> dana: i might say. >> jesse: do you remember how venomous the questions where when he was president? it was just an accusation, not even a question. "are you a traitor or racist?" i detected a lot more respectful policy questions this time, and i hope it continues. maybe they were all breitbart reporters. i don't know. but i liked the town, so let's

keep that up. the softbank thing was genius, because softbank is the largest venture capital firm in the world. they invest in tech. so when softbank invests in anything, everybody gets on board like herd mentality. if buffett or nancy pelosi invests somewhere, everybody's going to go in because you know it only goes up. negotiating out there in public, imagine you went to the mall with your wife and there was cameras there, and all of a sudden she was like, "jesse, you really love me, right? let's spend twice as much." you're looking at reporters like, "okay." >> dana: she's a good negotiator. >> jesse: that was really funny. and they grabbed him and brought him in like he was six years o old. remember when tampa bay all of the sudden signed tom brady, dana? >> dana: i do remember that. >> jesse: and all in all of a sudden all the free agents started flocking to the bucs because they want to be next to tom brady and they want a ring.

that's what's happening with softbank. it is great p.r. strategy that happened during the tax cuts in 2018. remember after he signed the trump tax cuts and all these corporations started making these announcement that they're going to give bonuses? "i'm going to give a bonus to every employee. my cash bonus is going to be twice as much." and it was great prn great momentum. and this is what you're seeing here. i remember my gave my kids and allows adjustment. i don't know if you saw the press release, but it's great. to have biden, who hasn't done a press conference since ju july 11th, where he lied and said he was going to stay in, and see this guy, you remember what howard stern said he's the best interview. because he answers everything. and it's not just because he has convictions and confidence, he has respect for the people. >> dana: and president trump said a line that i think people have kind of gotten around to, but he nailed it when he said, "my first term, everyone was fighting me. this term, everyone wants to be

my friend," harold. a lot of business people saying, let's get on board. to be fired without a doubt. first of all, it's great to be back around the table. hope everybody had a great time. i think jesse nailed it. i think you're right. this president, one of the reasons, one of the strengths of president trump was what he showed in that press conference. to take whatever it was, 30-40 questions, i listened to a lot of it. i didn't see it, i was in a car so i was listening on the radio. i thought his best answer was one of the ones we played where they asked him -- i think it is really a metaphor for the way he conducts himself. when they asked him, are you thinking about preemptive strikes towards iran? he said, well, that's a dumb question. if i am thinking about it, why would i tell you i'm thinking about primitive strikes? if i'm not thinking about it, why would i tell you? i think the country got another taste of what it was like eight years ago when he was president. 4-8 years ago. in this press conference here, starting it off with the softbank ceo, it was as bold and

as smart a way to do it. it reminded me of president reagan. the backdrop is always really strong. even if you have it on mute, sometimes people tell me not to watch things on mute, but if you watch this on mute, this was as powerful as it was listening to it. it might have even been more powerful, because i think the president is also entertaining in his talk, and the way he talks about things. they are right, dana. they're going to have to get ready because this guy's going to give a press conference every day. >> dana: he has energy and excitement, and i think one of things he did today on a monday morning was say, i've got this momentum, how do i keep it going cannot give me the ball, i can run through. >> judge jeanine: when he think about how many days -- what is it, 36 days before he takes office? something like that. anyway, he is still energized, so organized. he's got all of these nominations, and he comes out and he says, this is going to be the golden age of america. and then he starts with this guy from softbank, with

$100 billion, promising 100,000 new jobs for americans. i mean, you realize that he has the capacity to deliver. he has the capacity to unite the country. he has the capacity to unite the party. i don't think there is any greater example of that than there was at the army-navy game. it's not just the army-navy game. when they went crazy with chants of "usa, usa," think about who he was in that box with. he's got elon and j.d. vance, vivek, mike johnson, danny penny. he has all these people to show that the republican party is united. no more rhinos. you don't matter anymore. what he's got is a united party, a united country, and then you got a guy like van jones who says, "hey, dude, this guy is smarter than me and you." you knock out the left saying

this guy is really smart and he's going to deliver for us, and then we no longer have to deal with the frustration of joe biden turning his bobbing head and making a turnaround with his sarcastic smile and not answering questions. it's something to all of us. so i'm very excited about all of this. i think it's going to be great, and i think the fearmo fearmongering -- if the left decides they want to get started, i think it is just going to be outweighed by the support the left has. because the left wants safety, they want jobs, they want security. it is something that we all w want. >> dana: the democrats seem like they are in an endless game of bumper cars since the election. they just keep hitting each other. they can't actually get any momentum. they are stuck. >> kat: absolutely. you watch something like this and it is impossible to ignore how differently you feel, as human being being watching that

versus watching biden have a press conference. because i think, regardless of politics, when we would watch joe biden speak, you would be holding your breath a little bit. he would be kind of waiting for the thing where you are like, okay, he made it through that one. and how different is that from the way trump handled this? i also agree, what an answer to that iran question, harold. like, why would answer that? can you imagine if i answered that? i was left feeling, i wonder how that reporter feels after asking that question. you can compare that to whenever biden was done speaking, i would think, his poor pr team, sometimes. how are they going to address this thing that made no sense, that thing that made no sense? but also, in the previous iteration of trump, they would be a lot of times where i would be thinking also, oh, no, his poor pr team. but when i was watching this, it was some good ribbing but none of it was -- it was fun to

either someone seizes the mantle or she shuts the door on the opportunity. she basically took to her bed for the last six weeks since the election. she is not somebody -- actually, in china they have a thing called lying flat, which is basically like quiet quitting. you just give up. there's no job here for me, i was promised if i went to college and i did these things i was going to get these job opportunities and have this life, and it's not happening, so i'm not doing it anymore. quiet quitting is a gentler way of doing that. we talked about that a little bit in america. i think that's what she's been doing. then she goes and says, you're not defeated. oh, you are completely defeated, and it's not getting better. i keep wanting someone in the democratic party to stand up. i did talk to ben winkler from madison, wisconsin, actually, a democrat, well-liked and the progressive circles. they say he sent a pretty good job. tammy baldwin did keep that senate seat, and he is stepping up. but i don't see him as somebody that she might run the dnc but

he's not going to be the candidate. >> jesse: janine, how much pressure do you think she is under to be forced into taking this job as california governor? i mean, no one wants her in 2028. they might just hang that thing over to her. >> judge jeanine: i think it is really a question of who wants to be governor in california. look, she is not entitled to a consolation prize create she couldn't even win the youth v vote, she poorly performed with the black vote. the reason she lost is because she didn't run on anything and couldn't run on anything she did. that election loss was a blowout. it was a blowout. they lost every swing state, and now she's going out lecturing on what they called the future broader focus? she can't even focus on the minimum focus. the woman -- the democrats, if they know what's good for them, they'll get rid of this woman,

because she is a reminder of the lying and the charades that went on during the biden administration. they told us the border was secure. they told us that inflation was not what it was. they told us all of this crazy stuff that afghanistan was a success. these are not people you need to roll out again. in the end, she covered for a president who was literally non compos mentis. she needs to pay a price for that, and you don't do that by giving her -- some assembly person who wants to be a governor should be given a shot at that. what is she going to run on? what the hell did she do for four years as vice president? with all the human trafficking, all the fentanyl, 320,000 kids missing. she should be embarrassed to show her face in public. >> jesse: okay, so she'll just go hide in hawaii for the rest of her career. got it. what do you see in her future?

>> kat: i agree she -- i understand how she might feel like she does. emotionally it's difficult to go from where she was to where she is now, and she might be thinking, i can't be the president, but maybe i can be the governor of california. because you don't want to feel like it was all for nothing and it's all gone. it's kind of like when people try to be friends with their exes. you're like, i know he's seeing someone else, though i can't i text him happy birthday and say i hope he's having a good day? you don't want to feel like it was all for nothing. but of course in both cases it is very clear that it's better to just move on, move forward something that's right for you. she could have had more help from the media. they created her. remember when she was on the cover of "time" magazine without even doing an interview? it could not have been easier, and she totally blew it anyway. clearly this isn't her thing. she needs to accept that in order to move forward.

but i understand how it might be hard. she was the darling of everyone in hollywood, everyone in music, everyone in media, and it's all gone? that's got to be really hard to accept, even though you have to accept it. >> jesse: is there anything besides politics that she could do? that's a serious question. what else besides politics could she maybe due? >> dana: it's the al gore model. >> harold: i'm not as passionate about it -- well, i am about some things. voters will make this determination. she seeks to run for office in california, i think kat is right. she's trying to figure out, i ran for a couple of months. if i were her, i would step back for little while and try to figure out what i did right and what i did wrong and more fundamentally, why am in the business of politics. if you are in the business of politics to give speeches like that to say we are fighting, when you fight in politics, you fight for a purpose. you've got a step back sometimes and have a little introspection about, what did i do write? why do i want to do this?

not just her, but anytime you lose in a race like this. the voters will help her sort it out. they either will or they will not want her. president trump, again, did something that a republican has not done in a very, very long time. he got working-class americans to believe that he was best fit and had the best ideas and best vision to take the country forward. you have to accept that when you run a political contest, that you could lose. you have to step back and understand why. that's why. there's nothing more complicated than that. we were wrong on issues. we didn't connect with voters on the most important issues. so every democrat has stepped back a bit and try to figure out, how do we make sure we are competitive, that we are in the center, and that voters are listening to us again? if we don't do that, we have no chance of winning. i root for president trump because he won on many of the ideas that i thought we should have been campaigning on. that is something we should learn from him. he's going to have to deliver on a lot of those things.

have learned, but because he said what he said, now tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. the intelligence agencies are finally going to do a congressional briefing. they've been asking for it. there might be a perfectly reasonable exultation for all of this, but because the biden and administration blew their credibility on the chinese spy balloon 2.0, this is what we have right now. you have local police department saying they don't know what's going on, the federal government saying they want the local police department to deal with it, but they are like, do we have the agreement to do with this? and it basically looks like a circular firing squad. it's embarrassing in the middle of the transition. hopefully we get more answers tomorrow. >> judge jeanine: you know, harold, the federal government is relying on the locals. they are pointing at the locals for this, which makes no sense. i'm not sure the locals have the power to do this, and now we just had governor hochul from new york a month later saying the federal government is going to deploy what we need, state-of-the-art drone detection system. if they are not drones, then

their airplanes, what do we need -- they are talking in circles. >> harold: these drones i think have become a metaphor. jesse and i were talking before the show, they have become a metaphor in many ways for the border and for inflation and other things that happened during the campaign. the american people are seeing these things in the air, and it is causing concern. so they are reaching out to their local mayors, state legislators, congressmen, senators, governors, and those elected officials can't get a straight answer or a complete answer from the federal government. so what happens then? this is not a partisan thing. americans get upset, because they wonder, living in a free country, why they can't get basic answers. if they have to go to a drone maker who then says on a great television show, those are planes, but the government won't say it, we reported on air today that an air force base in ohio is treating this more seriously than perhaps the drone maker is,

and even what secretary mayorkas said, that they are shutting the lights off at the base, they don't know what it is. if a military base, one of the most important military bases in the country, if they're behaving that way, i think it is highly justifiable and understandable why the american people in new york and new jersey and pennsylvania and other places around the country are beating this way. my advice, answer the question. president trump gave a little assurance today at his press conference, because it was something more than what some people are thinking, the president would probably have had a different response. although he did make clear to the biden administration, shoot straight with the american people on this. we deserve it. we are the taxpayers. so i understand the frustration. >> judge jeanine: it congressmen walz said that dod is blaming dhs and dhs is blamig dod. and i really don't expect answers from the federal government, because of what happened with the spy balloon. they acted like we were all stupid. what do you think?

when you're in the military you're really close with your brothers and your sisters that are in the military with you. and when you get out of the military, you kind of lose that until you find a new family. we can talk about our struggles and the things that we did overseas and not everybody can do that. adam! how's it going, brother? we live pretty close to each other. so he's always coming over. when i go to jack's house, we watch a lot of football, hang out. we go outside the friendship has kind of grown into a family i was overseas on a deployment. i got separated from my marines and i got hit in the neck, and it broke my neck and paralyzed me. 14 years ago, i was on a training mission.

did a military freefall, and i had some faulty equipment. i hit the ground. going, 30 to 40 knots and was instantly paralyzed. i met jack fanning when he invited us to park city, utah, through his foundation. i was able to actually get on the mountain and ski with my family, i can't put into words what that meant. i got paid in the military to do crazy fun stuff. and after my accident, i'm still that same guy. and when i was able to jump out of a perfectly good, helicopter, at 10,000 feet, i did it. i was talking to some vets last week amazing how we have these houses where they can come over because they■re in chairs too. carpet and wheelchairs don't mix very well. tunnel to towers, they got rid of all that. they redid my whole bathroom. that's probably the favorite part of my house. i thought they were just going to do the upgrades. but the surprise to me was they paid off the entire mortgage.

instead of a misdemeanor, it's going to be a third-degree felony. so they are now raising it to a felony. anyone who's just watching this is going to pay a fine of $400. the amazing part of it is this happened over two weeks ago and they are still looking for a lot of these people. i suspect that these hooligans or animals, whatever you want to call them -- by the way, they are not teenagers. we are not talking about 14, 15. they are 17-30 years of age, and they all know better. that kind of situation where they literally start a fire -- as far as i'm concerned, that's arson, and with a baby it is endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving, and it could be assault at the mother trying to protect her child. this criminal mischief with the damage to the vehicles. there's all kinds of additional charges that they should figure out right now, but the fact that they don't have about 30 people arrested tells me that they need help on this stuff.
