5:01 am
>> happening now is a big meeting going on in johnson's office, members that were unhappy with this skin skinny c last night and russell vouight. we have not seen the speaker enter the room yet. johnson walked in this morning telling me they have a plan and there will be a vote this, mo. sources tell me it is a deal, a temporary fix to avert a government shutdown and there will be a vote on this temporary fix at 10:00 a.m.ed today. it does not appear to include a debt ceiling that trump has been calling for. president-elect trump was not moving from his position and posted this on truth social, congress must get rid of or
5:02 am
extend the ridiculous debt ceiling, the pressure is on whoever is president. according to my sources, it does not appear this temporary solution has a debt ceiling attached and will punt this until after the holiday break. despite trump and elon musk supporting this skinny cr, others voted against it. leader hakeem jeffries wasn't going to play ball and trump and j.d. vance and others are blaming democrats for this debacle that we're all in right now. it seems like something is coming together, lawrence, steve, brian and ainsley, and might see a vote this morning at 10:00 a.m. >> lawrence: what i'm hearing from my sources, close to transition, you are right, it is about the debt ceiling and
5:03 am
timeline is being negotiated. they want to get to january 3rd but then they lose leverage. if there is a shutdown, it would be when republicans are in control of all three branches of government, right? >> yes, and it would be a tricky situation, there is no appetite for a shutdown among members on both sides and both chambers, they want to avoid that under senate democrats and house republicans or next year when republicans take the majority. question is can they come back and get this debt ceiling situation done whatever this temporary cr expires whether a week, two weeks, three weeks, they don't know. if they come back and they're in this situation again, will they be able to appease the situation. >> todd: did choip roy walk in the room? >> yes, he just past me minutes
5:04 am
ago. i've been trying to ask people how they slept last night and they are telling me okay. seems like something happened, there seems to be a feeling there is a deal. >> steve: go ahead. >> ainsley: explain to american people why president-elect trump want to get rid of the debt ceiling. >> sure, in basic terms, it is all about leverage, you guys and republicans will have a lot of leverage when they come in next year and democrats won't. only leverage they will have is this debt ceiling. it is when you have big funding fights and republicans will need their votes to deal with debt funding. the president-elect can work on his legislative agenda first three months of the year, but it
5:05 am
is a smart move to try to get rid of it and get it done during the lame duck so they don't have to deal with it next year. it is a smart move, i think there is frustration it came up in the 11th hour. i'm getting pushback saying it did not come up in the 11th hour, that trump was involved in backdoor talks with schumer trying to get a deal done. it was clear republicans were not going for it without offsets. >> steve: perhaps republicans who got a good night sleep know they will kick the can down the road 10 days. if you're donald trump, you are probably steamed at kevin mccarthy, who negotiated this deal, this debate would come up as trump transition heads to inauguration, he's had a good transition so far until this and
5:06 am
now this is waiting for him. it would have passed -- >> kevin mccarthy negotiated the debt ceiling and gave that as a gift to the incoming president. >> steve: that is my point, incoming president doesn't want that because he has big plans. he would like it lifted for his term and forever and that is ultimately probably the negotiation. >> that is ultimately what he wants, not sure if senate republicans are in charge of that, suz /* susan coldlins sad she'd have to look into it before she could answer that question, it has never been brought up before. it will have to be talked about when they come back. >> brian: is there a chance what
5:07 am
is happening at 10:00 today, if it results in a no vote -- >> yes, longer speaker johnson waits more leverage schumer has in the senate, this is game senate and house plays with each other. stuff is supposed to come from the senate, if the house can't get it together, schumer will put together his own package, probably a clean cr. i'm hearing from sources that is already in the works and that could be coming later tonight, which is not early when you think about the deadline. if they don't see anything happen, if there is not a successful vote on the floor, yeah, we'll see something fcome from the senate. >> lawrence: we know the huddle is going on between speaker, incoming omb and j.d. vance, who is part of this --
5:08 am
>> vance has not been seen. >> ainsley: we're just hearing he's arriving. >> brian: as senator from ohio. >> lawrence: exactly. freedom caucus members right there. we saw this during the speaker race, as soon as they got more right-leaning members onboard, they lost some moderates. are they afraid this may happen? will they lose moderates as they moterate their position on this? >> with a clean cr, i don't think so. i think a clean cr will pass with bipartisan votes. it is what we're living in right now. we don't have a budget, you guys. this is a little laughable. we have not had a budget for a long time. a continuing resolution, does not matter what party, we are living under same circumstances, they are extending sim thing
5:09 am
we're living under and people are okay with that. the 1500 page thing had a couple extras involved. i have not heard that disaster relief is in the clean cr. that will be a major sticking point for north carolina, hurricane helene and milton. that will be a problem. >> steve: go see what you can find out. >> i'm run. >> lawrence: you start to lose moderates. >> ainsley: chad pergram, who knows everything and works for fox, says they have not addressed disaster aid and that was late last night. >> steve: it was in the skinny version. they took out all stuff for democrats ultimately. it will be -- interesting thing is it sounds like what is being negotiated at 10:00, it will
5:10 am
take them right up to the speaker's election and then -- >> lawrence: january 3. >> steve: if mike johnson can pull this across the finish line for donald trump and get rid of the debt ceiling, donald trump will endorse mike johnson to be speaker next term. if he know doesn't, look for somebody else. >> lawrence: i talked to president-elect last night 10:00 and he said he has full confidence in mike johnson and does not blame him for what is happening right now. i think he's sticking with him. >> steve: but if he can't deliver -- >> brian: the speaker keeps the president-elect in the loop. >> steve: the huddle. >> ainsley: what you are hearing from your sources during our show, this spending package, they will extend it for 10 days up until -- >> lawrence: short term. >> steve: continuing resolution, not a spending package.
5:11 am
it is what they have right now. >> ainsley: a cr. >> brian: hard to do projects when you have a continuing resolution as a budget. 10 minutes after the hour. this is a huge story, too. explosive report in "wall street journal" underlines what we've been saying, shedding light on how the white house functioned or didn't function with a diminished biden in charge. >> ainsley: this is a crazy story and it is just coming out even though we've been reporting on it. peter, you asked questions and now liberal press is catching on. >> peter: remember cheap fakes when we were told over and over things that appear to show president biden had lost his step were manipulated media? well, they were not and we have new insight into how biden aides covered for him. they just have to make it
5:12 am
through one more month of this. >> you prepare to leave the white house, any regrets you have? anything you wish you would have done differently? >> i guess if i thought a lot about it, something specifically done, not generically. >> peter: "wall street journal" headline, how white house functioned with a diminished biden in charge. diminished dates back to first year in office. meetings could be scrapped all together, in 2021, a national security official explained to another aide why a meeting should be postponed. he has good days and bad days, today is a bad day, we will address this tomorrow. in small windows we did see president biden, there were falls on stage, on stairs, on a bike, we were assured everything was okay. >> right after the debt you insisted president biden is
5:13 am
strong, given where we are now, do you have regrets about what you told the american people? >> no, not at all. not at all. >> i talk to president biden several times in a week, his mental acuity is great, fine. >> do you think the president should undergo cognitive testing 1234 >> to the extent we're having this conversation, no need to do that. >> peter: there was a claim the president felt like staff was treating him like a baby, i was told it was a ridiculous claim. this year when i asked who was running the country, i was assured president biden is. when i read part of the robert h herr report, the president said his memory was so bad he let me speak. which was funny.
5:14 am
just nenough for dems to stand y their man -- >> brian: didn't he call you a one-horse pony? >> peter: yes, before he got in. >> steve: he meant a one-trick pony. you have been vindicated. >> peter: thank you. okay. well, then, it has been fun, time for a new president to come in, that will be fun. >> brian: rob efert herr has be vindicated, too. and w"wall street journal" and clisz chris kaliza. statements and peers. >> peter: a lot was out there in

plain sight whether at an event or clip they were putting out that was heavily edited or look at some transcripts of fundraisers where we had a printed transcript and telling wealthy donors about a european leader he had just spoken to, who had been dead for a decade. a lot was there. we were told by people that we are supposed to take their word for it from the white house podium that we should not believe what we're seeing and what is interesting is that it took almost four full years. we're a month shy, january 20 is a month from today, a month shy of president biden leaving office. took this long for "wall street journal" to find 50 people they talked to. i would bet january 21, people
5:16 am
will put names to quotes. >> brian: we had no president for four years. >> lawrence: can i -- i want to play devil's advocate. we have all had an elderly family member that has gone through this before. we saw the sign, we all did. we used to have to do the disclaimer, we are not a doctor, even though we can see it. what point is it his responsibility and not the people around him. when i think of elderly people, at some point, you take the keys away. >> ainsley: jill was in more counties than she was and staffers were told don't talk about that. >> brian: in 2020. >> ainsley: right. >> steve: they got away with it for four years, they were thinking, have him run for reelection. >> brian: in light of all this, they thought they could pull this off.
5:17 am
>> steve: tight circle. >> ainsley: more than a talking point, it affected lives. pull-out of afghanistan cost americans lives, if you are parents and you know staffers behind pearly gates, white house, not pearly gates, that is god. if you knew he was having a problem and they knew about it and he's still in charge, i would be so irate as one of the parents. >> brian: did vladamir putin take assessment when they met one-on-one and he said, i'm go being into ukraine. thousands died since then. more "fox and friends" in a moment.
