the funding bill keeping lights on in washington dc, what is in this deal the past last night and is going to the president to sign it today? it funds the government through march 14, 2025, and includes roughly one hundred billion dollars in disaster relief and farm bill extension. it is not include the suspension donald trump was hoping for. griff: he is really steamed the debt limit did not get extended or canceled because the transition put something out increasing the debt ceiling not great but would rather do it on biden's watch. will be easier to extend tax cuts when he goes and if the democrats are not as elizabeth warren would say hostagetaking over the debt limit but elizabeth warren is with trump on this. it could happen. peter: you and i were covering

the mar-a-lago trump transition, we were headed for easy passage of the first version of the continuing resolution and you saw first elon musk weighing in saying get hang on, donald trump weighed in saying this is not why i got elected, they don't want democrat giveaways and now you've gotten exactly what should have been the first option, skinny bill, get us to march and he wanted the debt ceiling and can get it. you've got members of congress like andy harris, conservative weighing in on what happens, here's what he said. carley: to bring down spending deficits and inflation the, quote, republican-led house,

had initiated $350 billion in unpaid for new spending without attempting upsets to prevent skyrocketing the deficit and debt future generations deserve better. i'm undecided on white house leadership should look like and the 119th congress, want to get the numbers out, 11 senate republicans and 34 house republicans voted no. democrats by and large were in favor of supporting this. >> house republicans won't commit to what the leadership should be next time, mike johnson did the thing kevin mccarthy did that got him ousted, he pushed forward a spending bill with democratic votes. that could be a fatal flaw and i know this is something that happens every christmas except one in the last 15 years but there's a reason this is different. the president-elect is negotiating spending bills into making the current president sign them. carley: i was thinking he would

be up late at night and then go to the senate and he would sign it into law after it passed but the white house said he will get to it in the morning. peter: while we are talking about this, not going to have a shut down, january the third as soon as the house comes back the first thing they will deal with is whether to reelect mike johnson as speaker again and there are some unhappy folks. in the last hour we had congressman carlos jimenez saying speaker johnson is the right man for the job. >> i will be supporting mike johnson. these are the cards we were dealt, if we had sufficient republicans to pass some bills we would need democrats, we can't seem to agree with each other, 30 republicans did not

vote for this bill, only 2 or 3 seat majority. when that happens and you have to get something done you have to look over, we have to pick up democrat votes and the final bill isn't what we would like because we have to pick up some democrat vote so it works against us. these are the cards that are dealt. what we've learned from ousting kevin mccarthy, he was playing those cards as well as anybody could and speaker johnson playing those cards as well as anybody can. carley: being how speakers one of the hardest jobs on capitol hill. he spoke to the president-elect and elon musk and they are pleased with the passing of this bill. he joked when he talked to elon musk, do you want to be speaker? this stuff is hard.

peter: it doesn't matter what anybody says, mike johnson is a social postal way. carley: republicans have a majority of four seats when the next congressional term starts and two republicans, they have already said they will back him. we remember what it looks like when kevin mccarthy was going through this, and you just watch and see who is going to vote howard what the fate of the speaker of the house will be, that's what we will go through in january. mike johnson is getting a lot of criticism but he was just doing his job. he's got a huge body in congress with everyone having different wants and needs and has to wrangle it with a slim majority. if republicans wanted farm aid and disaster relief you have to cut a deal with democrats and he was trying to get it through

and it ballooned in size but they got it done and got it passed. peter: we are not hearing the last of donald trump's frustration with working with the democrats because his initial criticism was we are not going to negotiate with democrats we are going to do it our way and no doubt washington is trump's town and that is what johnson has to deal with. the other thing that is fascinating, we were covering the transition, when i was in mar-a-lago the ceo of tiktok, jeff bezos, before that zuckerberg, silicon valley's most powerful. it no longer run through wall street or silicon valley, it is running through mar-a-lago. any better example of how that is panning out look at the donations to the inaugural committee coming from people

like zuckerberg cutting the checks. peter: so far $200 million for this january 20th event, already at a record, beating trump's first one, biden 62 million. carley: they think it will increase to 220 million, the target was one hundred 50 million. what this money is used for is an inaugural events but these donations is a sign of people saying we are excited about the incoming president, we have hope for the future. a new fox news poll shows 55% of people are hopeful for the country's future today as opposed to 45 who said no, the number was 53% said yes during

the midterm elections and 2022 and 43% said they had hope for the future a year into joe biden's term. peter: after a year of biden 43% up 12 points. carley: 2024 was a bad year for the country. peter: 50%, half the country thinks that this was a bad year. griff: i hate to upset the produces but to the original graph, december 2021 to now, the numbers are flipped. when you talk about direction of a country and how the country feels you see a literal flip in the opinions, 43 yes, 54 no, 21, 55, 45 now. that is a significant shift.

carley: donald trump won the electoral vote and the popular vote, people outside the election, he received votes from people who never voted republican before. he was talking about common sense issues when it comes to the economy, the border, crime, education in such a stark contrast to threats to democracy on the other side and cultural social things that have, what people care about now, people say they are hopeful through the next four years and it's evident and appalling and donations trump is getting as well. peter: two trump campaign managers admitted they ran one third fewer issue-based digital ads than the harris people ran so what we are going to see now is the harris people never figured out what the point was.

carley: joe biden an officer four years was struggling the entire time, very much sheltered by staffers. so we have more headlines. president biden is considering commuting the sentences of most of the 40 federal death row inmates according to a wall street journal report. merrick garland recommending president biden come udall but a handful of sentences for, quote, the worst offenders, that could include djokhar tsarnaev and deliver roof after biden's threats on thursday, the decision could come by christmas. a story to watch. temporary drone flight

and south carolina and michigan, i will leave it there. peter: not a rabbit hole but to play devils advocate here, if you are a white house staffer and you say something, the president is looking at you are wrong, just has a cold, you're out of a job. if you say something and you are right you are out of a job so can you blame the staff? >> i think we can we should. a lot of people would wonder, how does the white house staff keep this big a secret for so long, maintain this cone of silence and the answer is it is in their interest to keep themselves in power but i don't think they get a pass at all. this is foundational, you can't help, the offense against the

voters of this country but it was also highly dangerous and can't help going back to so many events of this presidency and wondering what they have turned out differently, back to that press conference a few weeks before vladimir putin invaded russia the president suggesting the minor incursion might be tolerable. was that because he didn't have his fastball at that moment, if he had given a strong resolute statement could putin have blinked and not invaded? 2022 on the economic side the federal reserve realizes they made an enormous mistake allowing inflation to get out of control and start to respond. the white house does nothing. they continue seeing spending increases. would that have gone differently with a president at full mental capacity able to

deliberate attack. griff: chamblee painter joins us now. >> reporter: the suspect driver is a 50-year-old doctor from saudi arabia. they are yet to release the man's name. he is said to live in germany since 2,006, the permanent residency permit the man was arrested at the scene shortly after plowing his car some 1200 feet through the crowded christmas market killing at least five including a small child endangering some 200 people according to officials who say this was a targeted and deliberate attack. the motive is unclear but authorities continue to investigate saying the man rented the car he used to barrel through the crowd of people. a police operation is underway in the town where the suspect is believed to have lived and worked as a doctor. saudi arabia's foreign ministry condemned the attack on x but did not mention the suspect's connection to the kingdom. the german chancellor and other officials visited the scene of

covering 22 suspected gang members in the new york city apartment. and when you look back on the year, this is a major story. when i sat down in an interview with the acting ice director and jason owens, chief of border patrol, both of them in the sit downs, they both told me the two years ago no one had heard of them, now you see in the 16 states in the center of that map in tennessee, tennessee officials say all four major cities have had gang members identified and arrested for crimes. griff: the day one deportations could look like this, they are talking the transition team

teamsters union didn't endures either candidate in the presidential election which was an indictment on kamala harris. how do you think, what will our relationship be? would you consider him a union guy and what would that do to the economy? >> things are changing at donald trump is looking at the world in a different way and i think he realizes he has an incredible job to do here because he has to fix the disasters that happened the four years before so his relationship with the unions will be different and he can't negotiate. it's amazon negotiating but he's talking to jeff bezos and having these conversations, stay tuned. carley: are we hearing anything on that front? >> 10,000 workers, the ball forward and it is about making

the point before christmas, it's a topic of conversation. people talking about you, your issues are on the table. carley: amazon is saying unions donors doesn't all our members. something interesting that just, withdrew our plan to cancel more student loan debt. why? >> it' s a twofold thing. the hill is withdrawing from 38 million borrowers, operational issues and lawsuits that are pending. at the end of the week the biden administration said we will forgive $4 billion, it is a transfer situation. this is not popular. the american people don't want this. this is an assault on that.
