what does it look like there? >> good evening. the good weather here in atlanta and short tsa lines has led to a smooth experience for most travellers. for people in texas that's not the same story. let's take a look at the misery map. you can see across the nation around 3900 delays with a majority of them actually coming from both dallas and dallas fourth -- fort worth airports were the average delay is almost four hours. they faced a double whammy. first american airlines issued a four hour long nationwide ground stop because of a vendor technology issue and then a second ground stop just this afternoon because of thunderstorms. one traveler we spoke to hear is preparing for the worst today. >> atlanta's airport has a reputation from what i've heard. for somebody that is not familiar with the airport and

you don't know, it's a big airport. i miss my light -- my flight last night. >> this year we finally surpassed pre-covid travel numbers for the first time there were people on the road and in the air and interning 19. >> it's not just the airports that are seeing that surge. the nation's highways also jammed. reporting from along the pennsylvania turnpike. >> we did have some weather earlier today on the jersey and pennsylvania turnpike's. snow, sleep, freezing rain. all clear if you look at the windshield, 12 lanes of the jersey turnpike and all of them moving at are close to posted speeds as the traffic guys tend to say. that's good news, given the fact that 107 million people are said

to be travelling more than 50 miles this christmas holiday. that is very near to an all-time record. pre-pandemic record and it is an all-time record when it comes to air travel. almost 8 million people and when it comes to travel on trains, buses and cruise ships which are increasingly popular. that's an increase of last year -- over last year by about 2.5% when it comes to cars. almost 5% when it comes to air travel and almost 10% when it comes to other modes of travel. and despite the cost, costs are up two but according to aaa, people all too happy to spend whatever it takes to get where they want to go. >> we are 64,000 higher travellers in verses 2019 this holiday season. and i gets because people have made a conscious decision that

the north of new york. could we still classify this as a white christmas? i think we have a good chance. we got about an inch of snow earlier and wait keep that on the ground, we could classify that as a white christmas so we have to go ahead and see. mostly active weather has gone ahead and clear the coastline. that towards the new england region is where we've seen some of the heaviest totals. 8 inches in areas like vermont. almost a foot in other areas like maine. they certainly do have a white christmas across the board but here in the new york area and the new york region although down to d.c. where you are, i it's going to be slim pickings. new york macy had, d.c. not so much. we've got some icy weather that slowed things down on the roadways. no we are starting to see that picked back up. here's wear we see that better chance of a white christmas. across the northern tier of the country across the upper midwest.

we do have a lot of sunshine and a lot of areas across the country. temperatures back into the mid-30s. a little bit of rain through the mid-sections of the country. snow across the parts of the west coast were we had an atmospheric river that has been pummeling the coastline but across the northern rockies back towards the upper tier of the country and back into the northern plains. we've seen some good chances of snow cascade down through the sierra nevada making for another opportunity for a white christmas. we will see some rain back into the forecast after the holiday heading into thursday on the weekend. that may slow folks down as they are heading home on their destinations. all that snow really starts to pile up. we could see two feet in some areas, especially all the way down towards nevada heading into the weekend. >> i will take the 64 degrees in los angeles. so if you are headed out to the airport, what are some of the dos and don'ts.

with me as travel expert... so tsa says the number 1 delay slowing screening at security checkpoints is a prohibited items in carry-on bags. we all know about the forgotten water bottle but they say that one of the don'ts is wrapped gifts, why? >> if it looks suspicious they are going to open up and they will wrap all those minutes you spent wrapping that gift are going to be gone. so the idea is for -- opt for gift bags or boxes are way to wrap those on the other side of your flight. the best idea is to not wrap your gifts if your taking them on the plaintiff. >> when i alluded to liquids, you can carry some but the problem is a lot of that. i know you love the eggnog. tsa says they have rules about food so the fruitcake might be okay as a carry-on but the line is spreadable foods.

>> if it can be sprayed, squeezed or spilled you've got to check it are it's got to fit in one of those 3.4-ounce containers. you can take it with you on the plane so that's a little treat anticipating what waits for you on the other side of your flight. that rule, liquids in the plastic bag rule if you haven't flown in a little while, we see it, this is the only time many folks are flying. it's a good reminder that rule is in effect. one relatively small size baggie and no liquids inside a container that's more than 3.4 ounces. >> this is the first holiday season since the transportation department rule requiring airlines to give automatic cash refunds for cancelled or significantly delayed flights innmak in many cases the consumers had to ask for those refunds. what do people need to know about this? >> it's a set of rules put forth

in april and that applies to things like checked luggage, your wi-fi on board if it doesn't work you are entitled to a refund there. mostly certainly for those flights if they get cancelled, if you if you bought a nonrefundable ticket and if it's due to weather you are now entitled to a cash refund. these airlines are going to offer you a credit dramatic they will try to get you on the next flight but you have the right to say i don't want to travel any longer innmak if you cancel my flight you are entitled to that refund. during the holidays we are looking to get to that dinner or back home after that holiday celebration. it's a little tougher to say no i'm sticking around for an extra couple of days but that rule is in effect now and a lot of folks are good to be learning about it during this holiday season because it's been put into effect already today. >> what the definition of significant delay?

let's turn to alexis mcadams with the latest. >> people watching at home are thinking what else is going to happen on these subways. migrant accused of letting a woman on fire and watching her burn alive was arrested with the lighter in his pocket untold and he was in court this afternoon. is now charged with first-degree murder and arson. sitting in front of a judge today after investigators say he was that lighter to start a woman on fire while she slept on a new york city subway the other day. authorities have not yet identified the woman. she appeared to be homeless but i'm told she was so badly burned that's why it's taking a while because it so difficult to identify her. trumps knew borders czar has been talking about this case because the governor of new york posted these pictures the other day talking about how crime in the city's largest transit system is down but people don't feel that way. >> it's a senseless act of

violence for this innocent woman to be killed at the hands of a criminal illegal immigrant. shows how the current border policies, tension release has really impacted the entire country. >> he's originally from guatemala. investigators say the 33-year-old was in the country illegally. crossing into the united states at least two times. he was deported back in 2018 but he came back again. they say the address he gave was to an addiction centre out in new york city. this comes as "the new york post" is reporting that he often smoked k2 which is synthetic marijuana. amendment saying he would drink and then lose it all the time. he remains in custody. he's going to be back in court again soon. he was in the hospital today at some point we were told that he was back in court so we will keep an eye on it. >> the suspect reportedly telling police he has no memory of that attack is so let's turn to nypd inspector paul morrow. are you buying that?

>> he very well might not. there are videos circular eating of him prior to the event wear he seems to be semicoherent. that's not going to be a defence to murder. it's not going to stand up in court no matter what his public defender feels. i don't think he's really going to get much purchase on that. >> this man crossed illegally into the u.s. in june of 2018 within days in the first trump administration, they deported him back. he got back into the country as a got away. he shouldn't even be here right? >> there are multiple points of failure in this. first of all you go right to it which is the southern border. that's the initial one. then the second one i would argue is the shelter system in new york city whose... he's living in there, is apparently a heavy substance abuser. k2 is a very heavy drug. it's a synthetic that is

completely unpredictable and can really cause all kinds of psychosis. then there's the subway piece. new york city subway system and bus system lost $750 million last year. nobody believes this guy paid his fare. used to be a lot harder to get on the subway if you were going to be the fair and a subway was much safer. people just walk in and you see people going out from the shelters. that's another point of failure. he shouldn't have been a new york city and he shouldn't have been on a subway system. >> on sunday i asked tom homan about the got a ways. listen to what he told me. >> how concerned are you that someone has only come across the border who wants to do us harm. >> we've got over it 2 million got a ways. these are people who pay more to get away and don't want to be fingerprinted or vetted. i don't know how many cross this border.

>> how do you find those people? >> do you share his fears over the got a ways and the harm that they might cause? >> certainly. one thing you do is you look at the prior incidents. you look at the record that the perpetrator may have. you run the fingerprints, you look at the phone calls. there's various things you do to see what we've got here. you lose all of that when you have somebody that is... for all we know there are people running around in new york city who are serial murderers. it in fact it's likely considering the numbers. when you consider the fact that we are not getting the best and the brightest from places like venezuela who are too happy to get of other career criminals. of course i am concerned and that is going to be the problem which is locating these people, figuring out what you've got and how to get them out.

he seems to have his arms around it but he's going to run into a lot of headwinds. >> the related video to this shows the crime happened. witnesses stood and watching but didn't move to help the sleeping woman. they say that this is the daniel penny effect and some people are frozen when they see crimes. what you're take on that? >> he's not wrong. when you consider the fact that the police departments head down... mandatory, it's not enough coverage to keep all the subway system safe. you can never have a cop in every car. if you are going to advocate the good samaritan effect were people will step in and help their fellow new yorkers, we are in more trouble than we had been and you really hope that's not the case but just consider how bad it would've been had daniel penny been convicted.

the good news is for the people here, reported drone sightings are going down to just one per night over the past several nights. compared to 150 per night not long ago. >> i'm glad that the temperature has kind of come down on the issue but i still think it let us know that we have a ways to go. >> new jersey state police say the numbers are going down partially because of apps that help residents distinguish between a drone and a plain. new jersey also hosted 20 law enforcement agencies from various states and canada to discuss how best to deal with drone threats. they are advocating for congressional action to increase state and local counter drone authority. right now that is a federal authority. temporary flight restrictions continue over critical infrastructure in new jersey and new york while the nypd is pushing for these restrictions to become the new normal. >> we think there should be flight restrictions

did speak to the nypd and new jersey state police and their theory is that there was a small number of possibly unauthorized drones that were flown in new jersey in the middle of last month and then after that as a domino effect people who are hobbyists who own drones through their own drones up in the air and were looking for these suspicious drones and that's part of what we saw so many of the drones after that suspicious part of the middle of last month and then now they are advocating for the residents to use these apps which are telling people that they are actually seeing a plain very often rather than a drone which is a big reason why the reported drone sidings are going down so significantly. >> drones chasing drones. live in jersey city, new jersey. thank you. president biting face in backlash after tossing out two bailout plans and later a starbucks barese a strike shutting down 170 stores.

>> edward: former president discharged from the hospital earlier today after being treated for the flu. he was admitted yesterday for testing and observation after developing a fever. a spokesperson says the former president and his family are deeply grateful for the care provided by the team at the hospital. will be watching for any more development on that story. now to the white house and to the president currently in office. the scraps to major student loan bailout plans weeks before the trump administration heads into office. bill cassidy says this move shows bidens student debt cancellation push was a dishonest attempt to buy votes. let's get the reed on this.

i appreciate you being with us. i want get to you. the courts, what do you make of this. the courts had said over and over that these plans to get student loan bailout, they weren't legal. was this just inevitable? >> i think in many ways it was. you have the issue of the courts and the ongoing legal challenges is move was facing but also in a few weeks we're going going to have president-elect trump taking office and these actions would likely be reversed so i think this is joe biden essentially backing off of this because there were questions as to how far this would ultimately go. going to the post from earlier, i it's interesting because we saw the biden campaign and in the harris campaign really talk up this idea of student loan debt forgiveness in an effort to appeal to younger americans, to

student voters. it didn't really seem to work out the way they wanted to but clearly i think today there's a lot of pushback from those on the left and student loan debt relief activists who were hoping for a very different outcome. >> $180 billion was used to forgive student debt. this was an attempt by the administration as some critics have said to get that younger vote. a really didn't work. the numbers that we saw for president-elect trump. >> it's an incredibly cynical ploy that clearly wears then just didn't work, it backfired. it's what you saw disproportionate working class share in a nonwhite share of voters go for donald trump. in large part because we have never spent hundreds of billions of dollars in $2024 on public education, let alone the 1 trillion that joe biden promised. if you're going up against

donald trump as the restoration of... is... you don't go to the supreme court and say we are going to ignore your ruling and say that congress still retains power to the paris which remains true. the only person engaged in the delusion that it didn't was joe biden up until today. >> we had the student loan bailout plan that didn't work. you had the economic plan which spiked inflation. you had the energy policy which put a jump in gas prices. you had the focus on ev mandates that caused ford to lose $4 billion in 2023. so where does this, are not even talking about foreign policy, what is this president rank in history? >> i think right now when you look at his approval ratings they aren't that high but i

think ultimately this takes time, it takes years, decades to figure out where president ranks in terms of history. you look at someone like george w. bush for example who's very unpopular when he left office in 2009. now he seen as a pretty beloved figure. i think in the media aftermath of this election, of course americans wanted to change. they chose donald trump. the biden administration didn't seem to be doing it for them. we've not only saw that change at the top of the ticket. but we sought republicans take control of the house and senate. and do very well in state legislative races across the country. i think this is definitely telling of how much americans really just wanted to try something new and how the status quo wasn't working for them. we will see how that rates joe biden in terms of history. the pardoning of his son as well as the questions surrounding his health and fitness for office

after last wednesday thousand point drop i was worried about whether we are going to get an end-of-year rally but it looks like we're getting going right now as the broad market i think probably putting a good load today. >> is they're coming a boost because the optimism of president -- president-elect trump's business from the policies. >> i think the regulatory environment getting 100 times better is going to be huge and the fact that we went from losing the trump tax cuts that more than likely keeping them and more to come. the business and the consumer keeping more of their money is always a good thing for the prophets and the economy. >> traditionally markets have risen 77% in this rally period. since december 17th going into today that s&p fell 2% but this year we've seen a lot of those losses thanks to... the news conference talking

about the timing of the rate cuts and the fed signalling there will be two rate cuts next year not four like they had forecasted last september. or the markets too focused on the reserve because earnings have been pretty good overall this year. >> there are two catalysts. the reserve was one for sure but it hurt the bond market far more than it hurt the stock market. i think that the rise in the 10-year has been trying to compensate for potentially easy money coming into the new year with the fiscal bill being signed. we have promises from doge and lots of rumours about cuts and we will have to see how that works out. we don't have any numbers to price in as market participants. i'm very excited about this at ministry should coming in. i'm excited to see what he's going to do with these fiscal cuts. is probably the smartest guy in the world and can think with the mechanical things. one of the things that has kept the recession off our backs has been the fiscal spending. if they are going to cut the physical spending mechanically

we have to replace it with something. volatility is down. haven assets are down. the fear is down. the u.s. dollar with the incoming administration is strong and barring any bad news i see i santa claus rally continuing. >> 's -- what sectors are you watching as he makes these policy changes? >> technology and financial always lead and if they continue to be in good stead i think we are in good stead. i want to repeat something. there is a lot of areas that have been pretty much left in the dust and i will continue idem and all i can tell you right now, top ten stocks it -- any smp is about 40% and 56% of the nasdaq 100 and they are all acting well from apple on down. if that continues that will be the place to be. but francis nailed something big time. the 10-year yield. i talk about that all the time

versus talking about the fed too much. if the yield starts going above five and more while the fed is down four and a quarter that means they missed the mark and i think the market gets a little bit angry that they may have to raise rates to catch up and if that ends up being the case we will hit some headwinds with an expensive market at this juncture. >> it's what they base the mortgage prices or the price of mortgage rates. so what policies do you think we need to follow and see if they pass from president-elect trump to keep these markets going? >> for me it's going to be all about fiscal. remember when they titans they are taking the quiz ready out of the system. the fiscal spending from the biden a administration has been so high that it has been reliquefying the economy. that can be a good thing and it keeps things liquid but it can be bad because it's all debts. when trump gets into office, what he actually does with the physical spending is going to determine whether we have an

to be called a starbucks strike expanding its fifth day, closing around 170 location here in the u.s. as workers battle former pay with less than a day to christmas. our reporter's live is denver. what is brewing? >> not coffee. this location has been closed for the past two days. it is one of about 500 stores represented by starbucks workers united and they started their walk out friday. the union began organizing stores back in 2021 and have been trying to get a contract for worker since then but negotiations started in february with starbucks are at a standstill. the union represents more than tooth -- 10,000 baristas and is calling for increased pay and

benefits and ending unfair labor practices. they want additional staffing and more predictable schedules. >> we are not asking for anything unreasonable. we are asking for a living wage. it is hard to get our job done because we are asked to do the work of a person and a half. it is not sustainable and lead to burnout. >> 97% of stores are not unionized so the majority of locations remain open for business. starbucks offered 1.5% pay increase and members call that insulting. up to 60% pay increases are not sustainable. with more than 10,000 locations across the united states, this impact only 170 in the strike ends today. >> we will see how this plays out. baristas make an average of $18 an hour. if you had benefits like

health care, free college tuition and paid family leave it is closer to $30 an hour. what does it mean for the cost of your latte if they get what they want? what do you think? >> the benefit package is good. that is one of the main draws to working at starbucks, the wages and the benefits. it's interesting to see the strike happened but it makes sense. you have a lot of eyeballs on the situation with the holidays, a very busy time for starbucks. it is about putting the company in the spotlight, putting corporate greed and the spotlight and showing they want more. i would imagine they would try to settle thing sooner rather than later but only a very small portion of stores have been affected. >> it is $6.50 for a frappe or chino. at some point this will be the habit people cut first to save

money. >> you probably tip on that latte or cappuccino. that is another thing on top of the benefits and the nice pay package they get. if you don't tip -- that is pretty much mandatory. i would not expect to see the price is right because of this. they brought in a new ceo not long ago to turn the company around. he is trying to attract and retain employees. 2025, he is trying to stabilize prices, streamline the menu. >> now that we have lived through the price increases of 20.5% under the biden administration, people have dipped into their savings and there is an expectation trump can reduce prices. how can people catch up on retirement savings? >> it is never too late to start saving for retirement.

people are way behind on this. the advice of maxing out your 401(k), contributing enough to match the company. home values have risen so much over the past couple of years. that is an option. it is tempting to take your social security benefits early, it is in your interest to delay taking those every year up to the age of 70. your payout increases by 8% and is very hard to find that kind of a percentage increase anywhere without assuming a high level of risk. >> the change in car habits. smaller cars like honda civic and nissan sentra have taken off this year. suv sales have declined 2.3% compared to 2023. >> that makes sense.

car prices now are ridiculous. for an average car it is $45,000. people are thinking, how can we save money on transportation, so the small, compact and subcompact cars are becoming in fashion for the average ame american. insurance costs are up. something like 26% year-over-year, maintenance costs, repair costs are up. gas prices are coming down but it is still pretty high. people are thinking of creative ways. >> we have to leave it there. i appreciate it. thank you for the insight. merry christmas. thanks for watching. hope you have a merry christmas, remember, santa only comes when you are sleeping. there are no bridges in the next hour.
