♪ >> sandra: the economy academy s hudson river hud the location cn in 1778 by george washington is no accident. he thought west point was theho strategic keugy to its defense y stopping the british advancement during the revolutionary war. 24 years later, with legislation signed by thomas jefferson. the college was established, dedicated to training professional leaders in warfare. ♪ in 1817, known as the father of west point, general as you will venous served as the school's superintendent. boosting academic standards while instilling military discipline. with the country jus t a fewry years old at the j time there ws emerging need for engineers. west point catered that that

need. becoming the first engineering school in the united states graduates would build much of the nation's early infrastructure. after world war i the curriculum focused more on science andaf technology.te adding more realistic combat training with an intensive physical fitness program most famous leaders including robert e.in lee, ulis cease s. grabs t. >> dwight d eisenhower. george patent, and buzz aldrin. the list of notable graduates are just as impressive as theju architecture ostn campus. the academ ay was the firstpu institution in the natios.n to adopt the gothic style of architecture.th core buildingsic forming imposig granite fortress symbolic of the

strength and tenacity needed to lead the united states army into the future. among them, the exquisite cadet chapel which resembles a medieval fortress overlooking the campus. irish and italian immigrants stone masons were told they would ge ft citizenship if the chapel was completed in five years. they completed it in 14 months many the 192 windows throughout the sanctuary are dedicated to one of the graduating classes 1802 through 1976. tradition remains a big part of the academy. as soldiers wear the same style gray uniforms as those in 1802. as a badge of honor. while living out the motto: duty, honor and country.

also known as america's great musical war. ♪ >> sandra: the term band comes from george washington's bands of pfeiffer and drummer together in each company. the instruments were used to signal the soldiers when to fire their guns. the bugle achieved increasingly important role in the mid 1800s for the ability of its bold, brilliant sound to be heard above the noise of battle, following america's independence, only one pfeiffer and drummer would remain at wesy point to o keep the tradition of military w music at the academy. as west point grew, so did the demand for military music. ♪ pfeiffers, drummers and buglers would join musical

forces and be instrumental in military kamp's daily life.ta [bugles] >>ry l throughout history mility cadets marched to the beat of field music and it was in 1817 whenfiel the ensemble was officy named the west point band. ♪ by this time they were using a full range of instruments. two bassoons, two royal kemp bugles, tenor bugle. three clair nets, three french whoevers, serpent, cymbals, two flutes and 8 trumpets. played the historical events worldwide growing into the source of pride to the army and the nation. ♪
