6:43 am
we used to have a very strong vaccine. it was very strong. good in terms of controlling whooping cough but a lot of side effects for the same reason. what happened was that as we got better controls, the vaccine changed into something that was a little bit weaker in the sense it doesn't last as long. for that reason if people didn't get vaccinated during covid and the lockdowns and delayed in getting care. the immunity faded or waned. now people are more at risk to get whooping cough and to have more of the complications. then we can also add that all of these kind of infectious diseases, they can have mutations so they can spread more easily over time. it is probably a combination of those factors and when we also think about vaccines in general, obviously after covid and the lockdowns some folks are a little more hesitant to get vaccines or have held off. that can be a factor.
6:44 am
then we have illegal migration. we can have people coming in who are unvaccinated. >> jacque: some of the symptoms. whopping cough cases get worse with time. that's another complicating factor here. early symptoms are low grade fever and cough and then violent coughing, vomiting, pauses in breathing and dangerous for little kids. more than 32,000 cases in the u.s. this year. six times higher than just the last year. so what can people do to protect themselves? >> this can be very stressful whether you are the person who has the cough or sitting across from someone who has the cough during these holiday get-togethers. the thing is because it has a long period of contagiousness and very contagious if you cough or cold symptoms, you may want
6:45 am
to hold off on going to some of these get-togethers because it still could be whooping cough. a person has a gasping for air after they've been coughing. that's particularly concerning. if you have these symptoms, i usually recommend people call 911 or call urgent care before going there. since it is contagious if you go there other people there might be at risk of catching it, too. if it's not whooping cough, even if it's not, anybody who has chest pain, difficulty breathing, any kind of fever, better to get checked out to make sure you don't have another problem. just to reassure folks, if you see someone who has a cough it doesn't mean they automatically have whooping cough. people can have acid reflux, asthma, copd, post infectious cough when people are recovering. a lot of reasons to have a cough.

there is nothing being done about it. we get a lot of lip service from the governor of new york, as well as the mayor of new york that the city is safe and that the citizens are safe. but you cannot feel safe on the subways in new york when a woman just sleeping on a train is set afire, ablaze and burned to death. we have to do something in this country, rich. >> rich: ted williams, as always, thank you very much. merry christmas to you and lake charles, louisiana. >> thank you, my friend. >> jacque: merry christmas. a heartwarming story out of chattanooga, tennessee. humane society collecting toys for shelter dogs and letting the pets pick out their own christmas presents. take a look. ♪
