so that you don't have to use it. you want it to be a deterrent to other nations so that they don't attack you. in the same vein, why do you put in' a threat of a tariff like this? so that a company that is, quite frankly defeating you economically as trump alleges canada is doing to us no longer has that leverage. we have some fear in a way that they haven't had over the last four years. president-elect trump is not even in the oval office yet. but you have some supporters on capitol hill pointing out is he getting a lot done regardless of that fact. >> >> you look at who is closest to us proximity, we have got mexico to our south and canada to the north. i think we could do a lot of great work. but, again, we have just seen the last four years, we have been canada's whipping boy and that's got to stop. i think president-elect trump is being very clear that that is not the way that the business is going to be as usual moving forward. i think there is a lot of trade

everybody. >> katie: speaking of elections mike johnson house speaker in his role as speaker could be at risk ahead of a vote next week. >> todd: the battle for the gavel could delay the certification of president-elect trump's victory. >> joey: madeleine rivera is live in washington and she has the tea to spill on this, maddie. >> madeleine: hi, guys, good morning. the first order of business is electing a house speaker. it's all about the math. the house clocks in with 434 members wsm one vacancy thanks to republican congressman matt gaetz. the break down is 219 republicans, to 215 democrats. the speaker of the house must win an outright majority of all members. current speaker mike johnson is on thin ice with the right flank of his party after last week's debacle over government spending. >> before the last couple of weeks i was in hills corner. now we should consider what's the best path forward. and we do need to consider whether we are going to advance trump's agenda whether the

current leadership is what we need. >> johnson relied on democrats to get the final funding bill across the finish line. it's a similar scenario to 2023 when former house speaker kevin mccarthy worked with democrats to keep the government open. gaetz then triggered the vote to oust mccarthy. ha be hakeem jeffries signals democrats won't be helping jobs. jobs -- johnson. there will be no democrats available to save him or the extreme maga republicans from themselves. based on the breaching of a bipartisan agreement. >> without a speaker the shows paralyzed. it can't swear in members. it can't legislation. it can't certify the results of the electoral college on januar. todd, katy and joey. >> todd: thank you. when i look at this entire situation. i don't think anybody here on this couch was excited when mike johnson put forward a 1500 page

bill there. you know, a couple minutes before christmas and basically told everybody to vote on it. that said, i think republicans have to be very, very weary here. they cannot let perfect be the enemy of the good here. and look. it's certainly concerning that 1500 page bill. they ultimately did not settle on that. your number one priority in addition to certifying the election. of donald trump. is making sure that you do not lose a minute, while you have this power, to put forward donald trump's transformative agenda. all you're guaranteed at the most at this point is two years. you need to take advantage of each minute of those two years because who knows what 2026 will bring. >> katie: yeah. so there are a number of different factors here, of course, when it comes to the new speaker. the fact is that house speaker mike johnson only has a five-seat majority. four seat majority.

and so, if you look at the balance of power here. it's a very, very slim. so the questions that republicans and president donald trump must be asking is what is the risk-benefit analysis? is it worth risking not certifying the election of 2024 on january 6th because house republicans are infighting about who should be the next speaker? if they are going to do this, they should somebody lined up ready to go to replace him immediately. these house speaker fights can last days, weeks, months. >> not going to happen. they have to decide worth pushing on certifying the election. potentially pushing off the inauguration date to get a new speaker and whether president trump, you know, there is reporting that he is upset with the way that the spending bill went down; however, it may be more complicated given that the certification date is in a week and a half. >> joey: listen, i said yesterday, president trump saved the republican party from the

aftermath of the tea party. walk down the railing and explain that ted cruz proved in the senate when they were in the minority that you could complain about everything and not have to be responsible for it and get wildly popular. that's not a hit at cruz but that is a strategy that wildly worked. showed up to impromptu press conferences, places. showed up at the world war ii memorial after we took down the barricades and took credit for that because barack obama shut down memorials over see cress cs station. the idea that you create a protest not being in the protest and the results be damned. regardless of how it ends up over principle i'm going to take a stand. they ousted kevin mccarthy that was the move that hurt him. they weren't ever going to pass appropriation bills because of

the calendar. i don't know that mike johnson had a better chance with it this time around that is the gripe of republicans in the house is that we are supposed to pass appropriation bills to fund our government, have those arguments one at a time. not do this continuing resolution that throws in pork at the end. that's a very principled argument. but where is the opportunity or even levers to do something different. >> katie: yeah. complaints from the freedom caucus and those who are very upset about all. >> joey: happy to go home. when mccarthy had the hot potato, they were happy to go home and leave staff to negotiate and came back and said we don't like this. this doesn't work. the deal they made with mccarthy they reneged on. the deal that he made -- >> katie: mccarthy is long gone and johnson is in power. see if they can find someone better this to the job. going to talk to claudia tenney in few afew moments on "fox & friends," and certainly we will ask about this topic.

married and i want them. >> katie: married i hate the fact that they have to deal with this. and if we could ban it, there's no potential pressure there. their friends can't force them into it and they can't be forced to do the stupidity that they see on social media. so i'm torn. >> katie: this might help parents in terms of policing what their kids are doing. it's hard to enforce something like this. but, really, at the end of the day, kids just need other things to do. so get them outside. get them into sports. get them off their phones. give them alternative things to occupy their time. >> joey: bills like this come down to who is implementing them and what their intent is. when you take them just at their face. there is not a lot of people argue social media at large isn't good for a 14-year-old. i have a 15-year-old son. and i worry because i can't just monitor it all the time. but then you look at who is implementing it. for example, i think -- i can't remember the country. reported on a couple months ago that did this type of ban. they punish the social media

company. so then it becomes this back door way of censoring. if you don't censor we are going to punish you. that's not very american. that's not very free enterprise someone under 18 all kinds of things we do to regulate substances. on capitol hill when they have the national legislation on this issue, they argue it's not necessarily censorship because we do have age limits for all kinds of things that are dangerous to children and as we have seen with a number of studies, social media is actually very dangerous for teenagers, especially young girls. i mean, the mental health patrol cars that we have seen as a result of this are running rampant. it's a tough issue and definitely difficult to regulate and to police. >> joey: it would just help to have parents that were engaged. that's the real answer and you can't legislate that. >> todd: my fear is that even parents who are engaged, they there is still opportunity for stuff to pop up every now and again on a phone. i know your point, get them outside. that's a great idea. you're from arizona though,

their lives. over all that company has generated as many as 1.2 million jobs. wow. that's a lot. >> katie: kamala harris? >> todd: i don't know. has that been confirmed? i mean, look, i think what is important about mcdonald's is it really is at least back in i would say -- sort of an understanding of how the assembly line works and, yes, we may not be in assembly line culture anymore in every single job. can you glean something from that experience whether it be the assembly line or just getting up every day as a young person and getting out there and doing a job where, you know, can you make a little money but you can also learn how the workplace works. >> katie: i think everybody should work a service industry job, especially at a restaurant. it's a great experience. teaches you how to work hard and interact with people. and look at the moment that

donald trump had on october 20th. such an iconic situation we kind of knew when he was doing this and having so much fun on the campaign trail that he was probably going to win the election. >> joey: amazing how the trump uniform matched with the mcdonald's. red tie. ties right in. the executive there. mcdonald's is one of those cool stories. if you watch the movies and the documentaries. they keyed in on so much of what is now the american economy. the idea you appeal to kids with the happy meal. the fact that it went from a fast food company to real estate company. buying real estate to put their locations. and then the idea of having fast and cheap food. all of that i won't say is originated by mcdonald's but was made very popular and very every town by mcdonald's and that's where a lot of our economy is based on now. real estate, marketing to kids. cheap and fast. it's a brand whether you like or love it, you know, obviously president trump loves it. i don't know that r.f.k. jr. loves it. it's a brand that is as

a very slim majority. we do not want to go through the speaker battle that we went through with kevin mccarthy after he was ousted for over three weeks and several different candidates. and we ended one mike johnson who is a superlative speaker my opinion. i think a lot of people don't understand that speaker johnson probably the most conservative speaker to serve serve in the house, certainly in the modern era and that we will ever have pure constitutional conservative, a man of deep faith. integrity. couldn't be a nicer guy. couldn't work harder but, look, if we carry on, on january 3rd and go into -- past january 6th. we will lose the ability to certify president trump on january 6th, which is critically important to advancing the america first agenda, which mike johnson is clearly going to do. and is he very close with president trump. and i had an opportunity to speak with mike johnson last night who, by the way is, one of my dearest friends from my freshman class. is he a wonderful guy in so many ways a wonderful family man, but his job as speaker is to preside over the house and also to

represent every single member though it's a very slim majority of the republican house. and that, i think is, very difficult. we have a very diverse array of opinions from libertarians to conservatives to moderates. all trying to get us to come together. and this as newt gingrich cite is the most difficult speakership he has are witnessed. even more difficult than his. so i think we are going to come together. it's as at the at this in order to implement president trump's agenda. >> todd: does he regret the speaker 1500 page bill or part of the whole process that was necessary to ultimately get to where y'all got? >> i didn't ask him about that but i will tell that you, you know, people forget, it is wonderful news, i wish president trump could get sworn in on election day, and become the president, but right now, we have a majority leader in my old senator. hakeem jeffries is the minority leader.

deal of new york that was passed in 2019, under governor cuomo continues to get worse under governor hochul. look, this would be catastrophic, our energy policy in new york is already untenable. catastrophic. we saw over 450,000 new yorkers leave last year alone. and that's approaching 2 million since governor cuomo came into office in 2011. the mass prition is because of f the policies of the democrats, mass spending, mass taxes. huge illegal immigrants, sanctuary cities. and now seeing an energy crisis. i live in upstate new york, by the way. >> this is the largest agricultural district in the entire northeast. we need the fossil fuels that we have. we have clean natural gas that we can't touch. this would be devastating for new york's economy. and it would collapse if this were to happen. i do think this is going to happen in the courts. and i do think it will probably get shut down. but it's going to cost a lot of money. and it's going to be devastating in the meantime if this should

good morning, todd, i've searched high. i've served low looking for the coldest weather across the country. some of it i found here in fox square. one of the cool spotsd in the northeast not the case everywhere back further off across the west. a bit warmer. fueling some of those storms. dive right into it and look at temperatures across the country. 45, 46 degrees in chicago early this morning. 50 degrees in kansas city. that's some of the warmth driving severe weather you were talking about. moving through texas yesterday. there is a line of tornado reports eventually that led into louisiana as well. that continues to be a risk as we move through this afternoon. very low on the risk of severe weather today. it actually rebounds a little bit more when we finally get into saturday. you are looking at a three on a scale of five. can you see some big thunderstorms. some isolated tornadoes, hail, strong winds, lightning. all of the severe weather threats are a possibility there

number of people on the ice docket for deportation. non-detained docket. that number is 700,000 almost. how long do you think that is going to take and what are you hearing about the resource management in terms of who they are targeting to get these people out of the country? >> right. well, right now. ice only has tens of thousands of beds. i mean, tom homan wants to grow that to over 100,000. that's going to be a big task. but we know that he is going to leverage the military to help with some of the administrative tasks in accomplishing that we know that he is going to set up these family detention centers like you said and so they are trying to leverage everything they can but being able to deport all of those targets is going to be impossible. in fact, 700,000, 600,000 is going to be a task to do in a year. but we know that the priority of that administration is going to be those criminals. and tom homan even says, you know, sanctuary jurisdictions are not going to get in the way

like this. on one hand have trump's social post bombat stick and left have this reaction that is probably over the top. which one of those is winning in the competition of americans' opinions? americans are more optimistic than they have been and we are seeing in polling that people are excited about what trump is going to do and these kinds of reactions by the media to donald trump only embolden his support. what we're seeing -- and we saw this all throughout the election cycle. the more you attack him, the more you call him a dictator, the more you call him musickest putinesque the more people support him. people want donald trump to be tough on the global stage. when you talk to voters out there. they are excited about what he might do on the panama canal. they are excited about what he might do. not afraid of it people feel very much -- the media is very much out of touch

with the concerns of the american people. >> joey: i think when we look at this tweet that he put out yesterday in the narrative for the last couple weeks of this, you know, greenland and panama and how he is treating canada and mexico people on the beltway and channels that talk about politics getting in the weeds. don't most americans feel that as wow look at this juxtaposition of how make it we are doing so well expand what we are doing. >> there is such a huge gap between what the hard-working american people do and then the ruling class believe. and it is makes the voter feel or average american person feel that the ruling class or the media or the liberal elite are completely out of touch with their concerns. and they very much feel that donald trump is going to fight for them. when you look at the polling, more than 78% of americans feel that donald trump is going to

fight for their interest. and they don't feel the same about the liberal elite. >> joey: is it changing at all now that different people are being nominated? you see these fights on social media where people are saying well that's too liberal of a cabinet. that's too radical of a person for that position. and in the weeds of my feed that's curated to me. are you seeing americans react in that way? because donald trump threw a huge tent in time around and brought in people from kind of all walks of the political spectrum. >> you know, when you want to hate someone. you are going to find ways to hate them. >> joey: fair enough. >> when you want to have hope, you will find ways to have hope. what is hang through this whole cabinet process is very much a mirror image of what people see already. if they hated donald trump. they are hating every one of these candidates that is being put forth. if they have hope that donald trump is going to bring a better american future, they are hopeful that these candidates are the right ones to fill out

the cabinet. many people are excited by the variety of folks that are coming in many people enthusiastic. many people are afraid. there is no doubt about it. but the way that you view that is very much filtered through the lens of how you felt about donald trump to bin with. >> people sit at home and see what happens in d.c. republicans on the hill fighting to their own demise, democrats in place they don't know where to go from here. has donald trump really severed from that? i know he is his own brand, in politics, is he a completely separate entity from the two parties? >> in many ways he is. he is -- i mean, when you look at the polling do you think republicans are going to fight for you versus democrats are going to fight for you? it's not all that different. when you think about donald trump. it is very different. so, he sort of rises above the brand. he represents the republican party. but he is, himself.
