read a bill, to what we will deal with the reconciliation package and extending tax cuts. all that can be in the mix, but it can be done now and in the lead up to when the speaker vote takes place. when you have that gavel opportunity, it's smooth and quick, and then the republican-led congress by speaker johnson can get onto the business of the american people. >> and the move on to the trump agenda, which is very big. we expect a1 movements and executive orders, but yet, it's the legislation they are really going to have to get to. as alumni of chuck schumer, chuck schumer, as he will be the minority leader still in a leadership role, has said he's looking to become the resistance 2.0, using judicial appointments to stand in the way of the trump agenda. how do you see this unfolding? >> this is an example of a politician -- chuck schumer -- who knows how to wield power and has the caucus united behind h him. the judicial system, republicans

have appointed a lot of justices. i don't know how successful that's going to be, but in this game, the leaders really need to have their caucuses behind them as they do battle. i think that's happening in the senate for republicans and democrats -- the house for democrats, but not the house for republicans. that's a divided house right now. you have a weak speaker, weaker than any i've ever seen at this point. it's not mike johnson's fault. brad hand. >> we have a fight coming. >> i think what we've got is the reality that conservatives put republicans in office in the house, senate, and white house, and this is a huge opportunity to lead and get to the business of the american people, not the mudslinging we hate about washington. >> i don't know. i think the moderates are going to decide your majority. republicans, look out for them. >> a wide ranging investigation is underway into the devastating plane crash that killed 179 people in south korea yesterday. u.s. officials are insisting into the probe after the boeing 737 -- off of a runway and slammed into a concrete wall. the aviation analyst kim christiansen standing by. first, greg palkot live in london. what is the latest on this

investigation? >> investigators are just beginning to pick up the pieces from the disaster, but there are some clues behind what happened. some of the video you are about to see is of a graphic nature. south korean budget airline's boeing plain on its way from bangkok made a crash in the southwestern part of the country yesterday. engines, other systems seems to be malfunctioning. the plane ran off the runway, crashed, exploded into flames, and only two members of the flight crew survived the crash. the 179 people killed included all of the passengers. families gathered a memorial today. they learned it could be days before all of the victims would be identified, and remains returns to their loved ones. is for the cause of the crash, south korean officials say the airport's control tower warned the approachin a possible bird strike. shortly after, the plane's pilot

made a made a call and confirmed it had been hit by birds. experts say that shouldn't alone have caused the catastrophic incident. the planes data and black boxes have been recovered. inspectors are on their way to seseoul to insist with the probe -- in recent years, but the 737 800 model is considered very safe, widely used. still, seoul says it will be looking at that aircraft type and others. south korea is going through a political upheaval right now. acting president has been impeached in the last few weeks. experts are worried that the government -- this national disaster. pain upon pain. >> that's a great point, a lot on their plate. greg palkot, thank you. >> for more, let's bring in ken christiansen, aviation expert,

commercial pilot, and former nasa and air force crash investigator. the video we all had to watch because it's almost impossible to turn away, it's just horrifying. today, south korean officials say they will be conducting safety inspections of all boeing 737 800's operated by these airlines. what is troubling is this: the pilot had landed the plane safely without the landing gear. it seemed at a very high rate of speed, but then they hit the concrete wall and burst into a giant wall flames. landing gear did not come out. that obviously indicates a rush to landing him. what do you think of this as an early onset of this investigation? >> from all the videos i watched, it appeared that they were carrying a little extra speed on landing, and so that really extended their runway length that they used. they did not have braking action because they didn't have the

landing gear extended and flaps deployed, so they were carrying at a high rate of speed and just went off the other end of the runway. just carrying too much speed and no way to stop the aircraft. went off the other end of the runway. >> i want to talk about that. officials are saying that they will also look into whether the airport -- a concrete fence or wall if you will, which have a set of antennas designed to guide the aircraft safely to the ground during these landings -- that they should have been made with a lighter material that would potentially broken more easily under impact. i want you to listen to this aviation analyst question the concrete wall at the end of the runway today on "america's newsroom." >> not coming apart. it's not on fire. had there been ample space for this aircraft, there is a very good chance that it would just continue off the runway into part of the airport, would've come to rest, and every passenger would have walked

away. wi whatever idiotic engineering thought process decided to put a concrete wall at the end of a runway in an overrun section is beyond me. >> do we have these concrete walls at airports in the u.s.? >> sometimes. sometimes, there is light rail. some airports in california like san jose airport -- highway 101 is right there. you have to have a fencing for airport security, and a wall from preventing cars from entering on the runway, or you have light rail systems. not ever but he has the luxury of having land around, but on the airport proper -- there is material that the airplane can hit and it doesn't really damage the airplane, and the airplane will continue to decelerate, absorb as much energy as it could. the whole trick to reliving an aircraft accident, from the time

you impact the ground to the time you stop, you can expand the time it takes you to stop and more lives will be saved. >> what say you as far as this being a potential rushed landing? either the hydraulic system went bad, or it was a rushed landing and the pilot didn't have time to activate the landing gear to get the flaps up in order to create that force in order to slow down the airplane. it was a rush to landing, is that something you would assume is the case here? >> it's tough to assume. there is a lot of speculation. one of the things you think of immediately is what was happening inside the cockpit. they had honestly flown this plane a lot. it's a safe airplane. they were on the short final, perhaps they -- some birds, which could potentially shut the engines, the hydraulics off, or reduce the rate at which the

hydraulics can have the volume -- the hydraulic fluid to quickly extend the flaps or landing gear. clearly, something happened that got them out of their flow or checklist and it didn't happen because they are plane touched down without flaps deployed a and/or landing gear. >> just to talk about this particular aircraft, the boeing 737 800, which according to experts, is a proven airplane that belongs to a different class of aircraft they on the boeing 737 max jetliner that was linked to fatal crashes in both 2018 and 2019. what will they be looking for now that they have gotten involved in the investigation? >> they successfully recovered the cvr, the cockpit voice recorder. and the communications between the radios and the pilots of the cockpit and the flight data recorder which is all of the parameters of the engine rpm, the landing gear configuration,

other well. day, by the way, maybe one of the things that we can learn is that you could disagree in a civil manner. his post-presidency, he truly has shown the way of people, inspiring them and so many different ways. humanitarian aid, helping the homeless, working worldwide to eradicate disease, and always staying to his christian roots. he was married for 77 years. i worked with his wife the last ticket of her life on caregiving. these were two great, incredible people that loved their country. the other thing i would say to people is he and gerald ford became friends, he and ronald reagan. it was a time that people -- and we need to remember this and let it inspire us. we can have different perspectives but still respect and work with each other.

>> debbie, you got to meet the carter's. what were they like? to any stories stand out, moments you spent with either of them? >> very down to earth people. all i remember -- people forget that jimmy carter really was one of the first presidents that recognized that global climate -- we needed to be developing alternative energy sources. he and john had real moments. he saved chrysler. from michigan, you don't forget what happened when you are trying to protect jobs in this country. then, i really did get to know them. john obviously work with them closely when he was president, but i really got to know them in the last decade. i worked with her both on immunization earlier, but she was very concerned about the need for caregiving for older people. it was the honor of my lifetime to work with her on that issue.
