>> neil: president-elect donald trump throwing his support behind republican speaker mike johnson ahead of what is expected to be a close vote on friday. is it enough to get republicans on board? we ask this congressman about it in a moment. but first remembering the 39th president of the united states jimmy carter who passed at the age of 100. the attributes and messages of gratitude rushing in from his predecessors here in the u.s. and leaders around the world. the longest living u.s. president, carter died nearly two years after entering hospice care. multiple observances are set to get underway. welcome everyone on andrew lawrence and this is "your world". we begin in carter's hometown of planes, georgia more on this. jonathan? >> well-wishers have begun to arrive in plains, georgia the town where former president jimmy carter was born and where he obviously embraced

the world -- rural and very religious way of life. >> are american traditions and values, we need to bring that back. and it will be hard. but we can do it. >> carter won the presidency following richard nixon watergate scandal in vietnam. he worked to restore facing -- faith in institutions and negotiated a lasting peace settlement between israel and egypt but he had to contend with ongoing inflation an energy crisis and american diplomats taken hostage in iran. even those who did not agree with him politically raised mr. carter's humanitarian initiatives both during and post presidency as well as his deeply held christian faith that guided his charitable spirit. >> in the bible belt down in georgia and particularly south georgia and i would submit to you that jimmy carter may be remembered more for his faith and his politics.

>> on his truth social platform president-elect trump writes about mr. carter, will i strongly disagree with them philosophically and politically, i also realized he truly loved and respected our country and all that stands for. you worked hard to make america a better place and for that i give him my highest respect. president biden has designated january ninth 2025 as a national day of mourning. a report that mr. biden is expected to deliver the eulogy on that day. ceremonies are being planned here in atlanta and here in plains. >> millions of people around the world all over the world. even though they never met him. that is because jimmy carter lived a life measured not by his words but by his deeds. >> the former president's legacy lives on in the carter center

the international nonprofit organization he created in partnership with the university to help eradicate disease, promote fair elections, and negotiate peace. mr. carter, who was 100 when he died, will be married next to his beloved wife rosalynn carter of 77 years. they have a plot just outside of the willow tree near the residents where they live together. >> andrew: offering deepest condolences and posting a photo of her daughter and grandfather who were close friends. joining us now is the doctor of civil rights activist... the niece of martin luther king jr. how do you think president carter will be remembered? >> i am so glad to join you in remembering a family friend. president jimmy carter. him and my grandfather reverend martin... king senior were very good friends and i will

remember and celebrate his life. he was a man of prayer and faith. a good family man and he often canceled members of our family. and so if i was the state legislator weil and his arab drink has political iraq, state representative, alvina king so i knew him politically. many of the things people are seeing -- saying right now i was right there at those events. >> andrew: well. this was a president to arguably did more for his legacy after he left office periods work through the carter center, for habitat for humanity, what does it tell you about a person who is already served in the navy, served as the state senator, and as governor of georgia, what does it say about that person that he kept going? >> he was a man of integrity and very thorough. he was one of the few presidents that read "the five" hundred page documents and went through and wanted to make the world better. i did not agree with him

in the latter years with his political aspirations. we were different. i'm conservative and he is more of a liberal. but just a wonderful man who cared about humanity and he understood that we are one blood, one human race. he and my grandfather daddy king did a lot of racial reconciliation. and they just said we are the same blood. so we have to get along. so i just remember him as a man of integrity. >> andrew: president carter became an activist through the civil rights movement with the democrat party. he also parted all of the vietnam war draft dodgers on the second day in office. president carter was not afraid to stand up for big issues, was he? >> he was never afraid to do the convictions of his faith and his heart. key is to be remembered for that and admired for that. >> andrew: so the former president during the civil rights

movement, he was there as the same time as martin luther king jr. but they never meant. why do you think that was? >> we lived in the times prior to the 1960s and 70s and on into the 80s. and the south was, still is a little bit different than the other parts of the country. and so there was no reason because there was no conflict or confrontation that cause them to come together. my grandfather did have that experience and they hit some of those very serious issues together. >> andrew: president carter won the nobel peace prize in 2002 through his work to the carter center which has projects in 80 countries including helping to monitor fair elections and leading efforts to treat where tropical diseases. he was pretty selfless after he left office, wasn't he? >> i call him the humanitarian president. and that is the way he should be remembered. he cared about humanity. he cared about all

president carter's dedication,'s commitment, is kind of dogged determination to carry out peace i know and when he was asked what does he want to be remembered as he says a man of peace. of course we know in our current climate in the state of the world of peace is a tricky thing. it is not simple to pursue. so president carter's pursuit of peace is something that has deeply impacted who i am as a person on the way i want to live my life. >> andrew: is there something that comes to mind that most americans did not know about the former president since -- that you did? >> i think is the termination which i think a lot of people do talk about while he was present but his punctuality and his impatience with not punctuality. which i am a late person. i remember being one time being at church and i was playing the piano that sunday for our regular pianist john williams and i was supposed to be playing before the service at the time but i was

kneeling by his pew talking to him and he interrupted me at some point and said why aren't you playing the piano? so i went and played the piano. yes mr. president happy to do that. but i think his humility no matter how much we know about that or how much we see that in his life i think of ghost layers beyond what we actually saw in service periods humility is what makes them unique is a modern american. >> andrew: he gets a lot of criticism for his policies which led to an oil shortage in the u.s. and the embargo of the u.s. at a time when president carter was trying to transition to solar energy. to those criticisms away on the former president, do you think? >> i'm sure they did. i know -- i did not know the former president at that time i was not born at that time. but i'm certain they did the history books have shown that. but i think that is part of the determination and the pursuit of peace and love around the world that both president and mrs. carter were committed to.

because failure was not at the terminator but rather a motivator for them. when you are trying to be an example and do good in the world and treat people equally and extend human rights to all mankind that is the kind of success and failure and their failure was fuel for their fire and their passion for people. i think that is an incredible example for us today. perfection is not the point people is the point. i think for the carter's especially president carter that is true. >> andrew: trying and trying again that is the point. in georgia what are you guys doing to honor the former president? >> of course we are getting ready. you can see it behind me we have been getting ready since last night. but plans have been in place for years now that is true of many former president, especially one that lives to 100 years old. so really it is just tidying up the town plains. plains is not going to change overnight, it has not changed for a couple hundred years i think that is what continually

-- continually brought president carter back to this place. for all of the international pursuits to inspire. so we don't want to change the place but give him his last send-off from home in a place he would recognize. so we are tidying up and getting the town ready and certainly we will have some special ribbons and bows and signs to let people know that we love him. but we want to make it feel like home. >> andrew: we have heard that plains, georgia is a place that kept him grounded throughout his career and also afterwards. andrew gruel i appreciate it thank you for remembering the former president for us. before we move on taking a look at how wall street is contributing to the tributes to the late president. it will be closed for a national day of mourning. the new york stock exchange and the nasdaq they opened today with the moment of silence. we will have more after this.

but there is nobody more honest that i have dealt with in the 10 years. a fine christian man, not a religious man, he is a christian man. he does not cheat on his wife and i find that very appealing today. >> andrew: that is good. let's look be on the house speaker vote. the house is going to have an issue with the debt ceiling coming up. the debate to fund the government comes up again before the march 14th deadline. i spoke with representative... about suspending the debt ceiling and let's see what she says. >> one it is irresponsible, number 2 it is not fair, and again it is kicking the can down the road. in no shape, way, form, or faction have i ever supported the debt sealing being lifted because it makes very little sense that we campaign on cutting the size, scope of government, cut spending, but then we say, hey,, let's get rid of the credit card limit in order to cut spending? >> andrew: what you think about that? republican is the party of cutting the spending

so not reaching the debt ceiling? what do you think about that? >> i think it is a refreshing view. i don't think i have ever voted for a debt ceiling increase. more money going out in debt than i will learn this year by the time i finish this thought even. we better talk -- start taking it seriously. i tweeted on my tim burchett account that had over a million views that the problem is going to be with the votes in that room. it was not with elon musk or vivek ramaswamy it was going to be with those who have the guts to do what is right. that remains to be seen. we do this every time. everybody goes home and preaches to their people and throws out the red... and they come back to washington and they sell our country down the river. i'm hoping that will change and i'm hoping trump cleans it up. because we have to do something. >> andrew: do you feel like cuts can be made to? it is one thing to identify the waste it is

another thing to actually do it. do you think there is an appetite for that in republicans. >> i do but you have so many people that are battling these things and they are confident. let's be honest and they have investments, they have family members, they have a wife and/or girls somebody working for some contractor or a laziest -- lobbyist on a cased -- case. so they say we will make all these cuts and then they sent it says we will make these cuts and guess what? they do not line up. and then we come back and don't do anything. that is the truth. let's cut and keep cutting. we caught -- talk about cutting the department of education and everybody freaks out. we are not talking about cutting the money to the states. send the money to the states let them be accountable for it instead of washington, d.c. no bureaucrat has ever taught a kid in... tennessee how to read, right, or do arithmetic.

♪ ♪ >> andrew: to south korea where u.s. officials during the investigation into what caused a passenger jet to crash land killing 179 people. live in london. what do we know about this? >> investigators are just beginning to pick up the pieces but there are some clues behind in this terrible disaster. awarding, some of the video you are about to see is of graphic nature. the south korean airline jeju air boeing plane on its way from bangkok made a very hard landing in an airport in the southwestern part of the country on sunday. its planting here, engines, and other systems not working properly. the plane ran off the runway, crashing into a concrete barrier, exploded, and broke up. 179 people killed including all of the passengers. distraught families gather at the memorial today and they learn it could be days before all

of the victims would be identified and there remains returned to their loved ones. as for the cause of the crash south korean officials say that the airport warned the approaching plane of a possible bird strike. shortly after the plane's pilot issued a made a call and confirmed it had been hit by birds. but experts say that should not alone have caused this catastrophic incident. the planes at data and voice black boxes have been recovered. inspectors are on the way to assist in south korea's probo. boink is also hoping. the company has been plagued by safety and other issues in recent years but the south korean models are considered safe and still widely used. they will be looking at that aircraft type and all of the offer -- countries aviation operations. one more thing, south korea is going through a political upheaval right now. the president an acting president has been impeached the last couple of weeks.

am. west palm beach. appreciated thank you. let's see if this is something republicans should be squabbling over. joining me now to break it down as economist steve moore and political journalist deanna. so steve, as an economist, legal immigration is something that the u.s. needs -- needs. we know tech giants in silicon valley believe american workers do not have the skill that some of the foreign workers have when it comes to doing jobs with advanced computing. what do you think? do they? >> first of all you have it exactly right, edward. legal immigrants. those who come in lawfully with a visa, for the most part are great economic contributors to our economy. they are one of the reasons we are the most prosperous country in the road. we take so many of the best and brightest hardest working people from every country in the world. we truly are a melting pot. this program i am with elon musk on this one. this h-1b program. this is a program that brings in scientists,

engineers, computer programmers, the employers have to certify with the labor department that they cannot find a qualified american to do these jobs. now granted there are some abuses in the program, edward, i will agree to that. i think some of those things have to be mandated but the department itself is very important for america's technological progress and we should continue with that. >> edward: this poses an interesting issue for president-elect trump. a president who wants america first that's a slogan. it did not say american first unless it has to do with foreign workers and high-tech. >> of course. and let's remember elon musk in particular he came to this country and he has created with tesla alone 120,000 jobs. those illegal immigrants that come in through this program are in that benefit for native-born americans, right? think about the fact there is a maximum cap of 80,000 h-1b visa jobs this year. a little more than a quarter million jobs over the course of four

years. in that same time 10 million illegal immigrants have illegally crossed into the country under the reign of joe biden and kamala terrace. so we are missing the forest for the trees. while republicans are in fighting over program that is broadly popular, that creates a massive amount of wealth, that creates a massive amount of jobs, we are ignoring the many more immigrants that came to this country illegally. >> edward: i don't know about ignoring but there is a focus to make sure. we all know the reason president-elect trump in one of the reasons he was elected is because of what happens at the southern border. i will ask you this, steve, we are in discussions with canada about avoiding tariffs. the president-elect says he will oppose them. now we have a house speaker that is not locked in. does the g.o.p. need an internal rift over american versus foreign workers right now? >> they are important for our economy. and we probably would not have a

silicon valley today they technological, we would totally dominate the technological sector this is an no smart -- small part because businesses in silicon valley were started by immigrants. >> edward: but does it take the ifa... >> what needs to be done at? what needs to be done is we need to secure the border first. no question i don't think there is any argument within the party about that because americans are tired of a million illegal immigrants coming over the border every year. but the polls are pretty clear, americans to see the benefits of people who come in legally, coming to work for a better life. we do not want immigrants coming in and going on welfare but we want immigrants to come in and contribute as they always have. >> edward: what about the house speaker vote? the house -- the president-elect posted untruths social today that mike johnson johnson is a good hardworking religious man, he went to the right thing, and he will continue to win. my because my complete and total endorsement. but there was some chaos

around the continuing resolution a couple weeks ago. the lack of media statement support thank mike johnson. that this opened the door for this kind of debate they are happening right now with the republicans up in the air a little bit? >> this is president-elect trump's warning to the republican caucus. they need to remember the mandate and instead of fighting each other fight for his agenda. let's consider the math here, edward. if matt gaetz does not take a seat on friday as he said he is not, republicans will only have 218 votes. that means if thomas massey, the kentucky congressmen, votes against johnson's speakership as he says that he will, republicans can only lose one other vote. and that as it. and remember if they do not get the speakership about detailed this will also delay confirming trump's own election to the presidency. and so everybody understands that the house majority is a

it's what carter did after leaving the white house and humanitarian work and especially the time he spent with thousands of homes with habitat humanity alongside his wife rose linn. we have a former executive director for the organization. rob, what did president carter's presence at habitat for hue mbappety mean for -- humanity mean for it? >> oh my goodness, habitat -- good to see you by the way. habitat was real tyly unknown -- relatively unknown, almost completely unknown prior to his coming to new york and working on that project. what it did was number one put it on the global map immediately, all three morning shows back in '84 when there were only three morning shows. they all did two minute segments and front page of all the newspapers and whatnot. so it did that, but it also

helped legitimize the few projects arnold the world at the time, both in the united states and elsewhere and where these project managers have been struggling is getting volunteers and get the cooperation from city governments, that all of a sudden came about as a result of the visibility of that project. we knew that, you know, 19 units was the housing crisis on east sixth street let alone manhattan or new york city or the world. but it was a symbol and a visibility that it brought about for that program. >> yeah, what was the reaction from other volunteers that worked on homes and may have not known that he was on their team until someone told them? >> yeah, till they came on the morning show. i think pride. that suddenly they were
