public statements, fbi officials are cautious. in this case, just hours after this happened, the fbi is prepared to call this an investigation as an act of terrorism. that is significant. is it domestic terrorism or international terrorism? we don't know yet. but fbi officials have enough information to use the word terrorism. typically an investigation there has to be a certain threshold, certain criteria that is note call it that. so clearly, fbi officials have some information that leads them to believe this is terrorism, whether it be international terrorism or domestic terrorism. we should find tphout a couple hours when officials on the ground have more information. i'm here at the white house. president biden is not here at the white house today. he's on his way to camp david with the first lady, dr. jill biden. we know that he personally spoke to new orleans mayor cantrell, offered the full support of the office of homeland security and any other federal agencies.
7:07 am
fbi director christopher wray and the attorney general garland have been briefed. we have not yet heard from president-elect trump. those statements could come at any time. he typically posts them on social media. so the federal response is vigorous. the fbi is the lead in this case. the atf also involved on the scene. but again, notable that the fbi is calling this an act of terrorism. as we wait, we don't want to speculate, but as we wait to find out more information about why the fbi is prepared to use the word terrorism just hours after this tragedy occurred. molly? >> so very swiftly. tracking the response from thighest levels of our government, david, thank you very much. >> let's bring in chris zwicker. thank you so much for being here under terrible circumstances. what's happening right now with the fbi investigation from your perspective? they obviously have this individual, who has been killed.

7:10 am
probably shouldn't have been made at all. when you call it terrorism, it's a different situation, obviously. especially in my view, if it's international terrorism. now you're looking for cells. was this part of a cell or was this a lone radicalized actor. there is certainly precedent for this type of attack. we've seen it in new orleans twice. it's a low tech attack. it can happen pretty much anywhere. so we've got to get back to the nuts and bolts of security. it isn't always a grandiose terror attack. >> we were told at a press conference it was described that this truck went around barricades. with your experience, i have to believe here the french quarter, in the heart of new orleans, a major event on new year's eve that the fbi's federal resource and local resources were in contact in trying to protect this area, this iconic area.
