the city of new orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack. >> that is why we do not want anyone on bourbon street today, wherever you see yellow tape, please do not violate. this tape is in order to protect and stabilize the scene. what i also can tell you is this man, this perpetrator, he fired on our officers. from his vehicle, when he crashed his vehicle. two of our officers have been shot. >> officials in new orleans speaking earlier today after the city's bustling french quarter becomes the scene of deadly violence. a driver ramming his truck into a crowd, celebrating the new year, killing at least ten people and leaving thousands more hurt as we await another ue

next hour appeared welcome to a brand-new hour of fox news live. i'm jonathan hunt on this terrible new year's day. julian? >> i'm julie banderas. the attack happened earlier this morning the intersection of bourbon and canal street's, just after 3:00 a.m., police say the driver went out of his way to hurt people, even driving around barriers to get to them. the suspect was killed during a gunfire exchange with police that left two officers injured. they are currently in stable condition. >> jonathan: the feds are looking into the matter as a possible act of terrorism. fox news can confirm that the truck used in the attack crossed the border in eagle pass, texas, back in november, but that driver does not appear to be the shooter. former fbi investigator bill daley will join us in moments. >> will get. >> julie: we begin with alexis mcadams with the latest, watching the story all morning. hi, alexis.

>> hi, julie. imagine waking up in new orleans come out to party and bring in 2025, nc carnage in the streets on bourbon street as they are also getting ready for a huge event later tonight, the sugar bowl. investigators telling fox news, this man who has not been officially identified by drove a truck through a crowd in new orleans. they say he was trying to run over as many people as he could, then he opened fire. police say he was carrying a glock and a rifle. we know ten dead, dozens injured, at least two police officers booted by that gunfire. listen. >> last night, we had over 300 officers out there, and because of the intentional mind-set of this perpetrator, who went around our barricades in order to conduct this, he was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did. >> okay, so this happened at 3:00 in the morning, which, you know, think not a lot of people would be out, not on bourbon street.

people would still be out for hours. this man comes speeding down the street in a white pickup truck, some type of electric vehicle. you can see there, the entire front end was smashed in. he then opens fire come according to investigators, shoots at least two new orleans police officers who were on scene. i can season videos as i've been looking through social media, julie, they try to run interaction and help as many people as they can. there were people all over the street, wounded, some people lay motionless on the ground with people looking over them in shock, didn't know what to do as the police and ambulances moved in. investigators telling fox news they can't ieds in the area, plural, we don't know if it is one, two, three, we are try to figure it out, also being told there were those weapons i mentioned in the car and the truck the suspect was in. now i want to mention this because we have been talking about, you know, how could the suspect get around the barricades? there were barricades in place but according to the city they were being replaced, trying to put in new bear kids made of stainless steel, why?

because they have a super bowl coming up in new orleans and doing everything they could to make sure the soft target area like this would be as good as possible, but we are going to have to see what happened there, if those barricades were up or not come if they were under construction. tonight, the sugar bowl is supposed to take place, no word yet if it is canceled, they wanted to go on because there is more than 62,000 people that came in and sleeping in these hotels, getting ready to go to the superdome tonight, julie. >> julie: at this point we don't know if this was an isolated incident or potentially there could be somebody else in the area, i would imagine with the game tonight if they are going to allow people in that they would assume that the only suspect is dead, at least locally. >> yeah, i just got off the phone a little bit ago with some local officials out there who said they are being told by police sources that there could have been more than one person involved, so we don't know if this was just one person, so that is a good question, is that going to be brought up at the press conference? to sugar bowl keeps putting out statement saying they are not canceling but you have to

put into consideration if there is still an ongoing threat, what is that threat level and can the game go on? >> julie: also another thing we have been reporting at it is also important to remind our viewers, the person who was behind the wheel of this car, this truck, didn't necessarily be the one who actually brought this car from texas over eagle pass. we don't know whether this car actually entered through eagle pass, but we know it had texas license plates, but it appears as though there could potentially have been a second person and that the driver, the shooter was not necessarily the person who brought the vehicle to texas. >> yeah, federal officials told fox news just the past 20 minutes or so it was an american citizen, although they are not fully identifying him the yet, let's wait for the press conference coming terms of eagle pass, texas, people wondering at home what that is all about, vehicle spotted in eagle pass, texas, back in november. so as this continues to develop, was it driven through texas, was at the same person or not? they said no, but everything continues to change as they do with these press conferences so we could come from the mayor or

the federal officials there and have a whole new story in about an hour or so. >> julie: i know texas police are also investigated destructive figured more of its origin, the driver, who it was registered to, there are some any questions and we will continue to watch the breaking story unfold. julie come a thank you. >> jonathan: let's bring in bill daley, fbi investigator, good to have you with us on this consequential day. bill, from what you have seen so far and we have confirmed through law enforcement sources, going around barriers and driving deliberately into the crowd causing such carnage, a man, a driver who was armed may have had some sort of flag on the back of his truck, what conclusions are you drawing in terms of the planning and sophistication of this attack, bill? >> you know, jonathan, certainly all the things i am hearing, just reported a few minutes ago, the ieds that were found in separate places in the vicinity,

and the fact he had a weapon with him, the fact it was certainly preplanning ahead of time, if not immediate reconnaissance of what was going on in and around bourbon street area last night. perhaps waiting for some of the barriers may be to be moved slightly, to maneuver around them. we don't know but it sure was quite a bit of preplanning. the suggestion here is the concern there could be others involved, and certainly if these ieds were prepared, if they were placed in different places, we don't know whether they were coconspirators, certainly by looking at surveillance cameras in and around some of the public areas and private cameras, these ieds were found, be able to find that out, but all of this is certainly concerning, as was mentioned, this day is new year's day, when there are spectators going to the game there in new orleans and we also have major events throughout the country celebrating the

beginning of 2025. >> jonathan: should new orleans authorities be looking seriously at handling something like the sugar bowl until they have all the answersy who and if others were involved in this, bill? >> well, certainly the event itself, the stadium itself, can be secured and it can be screened before people enter, you can be sure there is nothing there in the stadium, you can scream people going in, so the venue can be tightly secured and i'm sure it has been part of the plans, anyway. it is certainly public gathering spaces, spaces outside, basically where people go to perhaps get tickets, those type of locations that police will have to put more focus on, making sure it is security. i think it is probably premature to cancel events like this in new orleans or elsewhere in the country. we just don't have enough information, but i'm sure police do. fbi are working very quickly to try to find out who this person

is, what the connections are with any organization or any others that might suggest there was a broader plan in place. >> jonathan: we are hearing certain names. we are hearing possible affiliations. we are not, with a fair degree of caution, mentioning those publicly as yet, bill, but obviously we are awaiting a news conference that is due in just about 50 minutes time. we expect to get a lot more detail confirmed then and there is no need for us to rush to get information on the air here, which come as we know, very much in the past, you look at the boston marathon bombing, obviously, a lot of incorrect information gets out there early on so we are being very careful with what we are telling our viewers, but i wonder, bill, what does your gut tell you about whether there would be other conspirators, coconspirators, here, given the way that this played out? your experience as investigator, what does that tell you, bill?

>> well, it sounds from however this vehicle was acquired, whether it was stolen, what may have happened to the original owner, either knowledge thereof or new knowledge that this vehicle was being taken, the fact that other things, devices needed to be put together, just by gathering the material together may have involved, could have potentially involved some others, that is really -- the weapon that was found, that weapon acquired, from whom? where was it acquired? all of those things are very important, jonathan. it is unfortunate. the united states, we have not been immune from this type of attacks peered we had a serious attack in new york city in 2017 were eight people were killed on a sidewalk by a truck, by a ren, and as we know, there was that terrible christmas parade incident back in 2021, where people were mowed down, that was

unrelated to terrorism, but we just don't know, and we have seen these things happen overseas. we just saw an incident recently over in germany just a few weeks ago, and unfortunately a lot of that stuff, the lethality, the use of vehicles come unfortunate falls into the mind-set of these people that commit these horrendous acts, and this is what they do. it is unfolding, very fluid situation, keep eyes on this, it is a tragic day, a tragic way to start 2025 here in america. >> jonathan: bill, thank you so much. you mentioned that recent attack in germany on the christmas market there, and it is worth remembering that attack turned out to be carried out by a man who was born in saudi arabia, had spent something like i think 20 years in germany before he carried out this attack, so we don't know if there any similarities here whatsoever at this point, we can't confirm

anything in terms of the ied, the motives of the attacker down in new orleans, but we shall see how it plays out. bill daly, once again, thank you. and julie, as we talk about all of this, we have to remember, as we talk about the motives, where the car came from, we have to remember just the human tragedy of this. i don't know if you have seen some of those videos which we are for very obvious reasons not showing, julie, but in the immediate aftermath, the video that is out there is just horrifying. people who were simply out to celebrate the new year, just mowed down, absolute carnage on the streets of new york lien's. >> julie: listening to the police chiefs talk, she was so furious and upset, absolutely horrified at the nature, the violent nature which the driver behind the wheel carried out this terrorist attack, the fact that they were able to call it terrorism that soon is also something to be said. the fact that the fbi got involved that quickly is something to be said. of course there is a lot of

information and evidence that they are not sharing with us and that is how they do their jobs in order to get more information, possibly for other accomplices that could be involved, they are suspecting there might be another person that could be involved or more, we don't know that so if they give out too much information it could potentially damage their case and damage their investigation. this is just the tip of the iceberg, i believe, and etiquettes for interesting you brought up germany because, you know, it would be awful to think there are copycat attacks like that but it right now is not looking good. >> jonathan: it is certainly something that is being looked into. all in all, a tragic start to the new year in new orleans. what we are learning about the suspect, who has just been named, julie, i am hearing right now, in our ear, that the suspect has been identified, i believe as shamsud din jabbar. >> julie: yes. >> jonathan: we don't know anything about that person's background, but now formally

identified by the fbi. i'm just being told, as well, that he is indeed or was indeed a u.s. citizen, and i believe i was told in my ear that he is from kansas. so that information just coming in from texas -- i correct myself there. what i was told was he is from texas. shamsud din jabbar. so obviously there will be a great deal of research going into his background now, julie, any social media presence, anything they can find. i have also heard they may be looking now, the police, at a residence which may have been in airbnb down in new orleans, all of this we will get more details on as this develops, but the fbi has named the suspect as a 42-year-old man from texas, a u.s. citizen, named shamsud din jabbar. julie? >> julie: yes, and we are also understanding there was a flag that was seen on his truck, a

♪ ♪ >> jonathan: the fbi has just released the name of the alleged attacker in the awful new orleans tragedy that happened just around 3:00 a.m. on new year's day. ten people killed around three dozen injured. that attacker who drove into a crowd in a white pickup truck and then engaged in a gun battle with police before he, the attacker, was shot dead, has

been named as 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar. we are told he is a u.s. citizen, and he is from texas. justice correspondent david spunt is live at the white house with the latest. david, how did the fbi make this determination? >> well, the fbi either is going to classify this as domestic terrorism or international terrorism. we know shamsud din jabbar, who is the suspect, the 42-year-old was born in the united states. he is a u.s. citizen, born here, so perhaps this will be domestic terrorism, but we don't want to get ahead of that. we are going to get some update from authorities within the next 45 minutes or so. we know there was an isis flag that was found in the vehicle. perhaps there may be more that gave authorities some sort of inkling as to why this is terrorism, although an isis flag i think is a pretty clear indication for why the fbi, jonathan, just hours after this attack happened, the fbi came and said, listen, this is being investigated as an act of

terrorism. as for the white house, president biden is not here. he is at camp david with the first lady. we are brief remarks from him on the tarmac today. he spent the night in wilmington new year's eve and made this statement, though he didn't say much, but i do want to play it. >> you've all got my statement. i will in the next hour or so following what is happening in new orleans. >> across the border? >> i'm not going to comment on any specific -- i've contacted every agency in the federal government, as well as the state, they are already coordinating to get to the bear facts. >> domestic? >> i am not going to say anything until i get all of the facts in front of me. >> been identified? has the suspect been identified? >> again, i am not going to comment until i speak to the group later. i've spoken to every member of the agency from the cia to our national security team to fbi

and i spend a lot of time with the governor. >> what happened? >> one of anger and frustration. >> anger and frustration. that is before we heard the name shamsud din jabbar, the 42-year-old from the texas -- houston, texas, area i should say, an american-born citizen. we are going to be getting some more updates a little bit later. we do know also that this truck was potentially rented in the houston area, so working to find the exact provenance of the truck and where the truck was before but we know there was an isis flag found in the truck and we are hoping to get many more details because after all the last details we got from law enforcement on the record, on camera were about 7:30 this morning so we are eagerly awaiting that update. back to you. >> jonathan: david, you have been breaking so much news on this story today, this terrible

story. i wonder if your sources at doj have talked to you at all about the potential for this being a copycat attack because i look back at that attack in germany just a couple weeks ago on the christmas market, it was a man who was born in saudi arabia, had spent i think it was something like two decades in germany before he was somehow radicalized and carried out this attack. is the fbi looking at potential similarities there? i assume they must be. >> oh, absolutely, always. copycat attacks or something we have asked about and something they are concerned about. local law enforcement in philadelphia, new york, los angeles, any big city or small city across the country that has any sort of gathering would be concerned about any potential copycat attack. in new orleans, even though there were barricades, unfortunately this tragedy was able to happen, so this certainly has other law enforcement agencies bunkering down and the fbi to watch just to make sure that there is no other sort of

copycat attack like this, jonathan. >> jonathan: david, we are grateful to have you there at the white house come and of course your unmatched contact at the department of justice today. thank you so much, david spunt. julie? >> julie: multiple local law enforcement officials are saying there is a possibility the driver did not act alone. let's bring in former nypd lieutenant darrin porcher. the fact they have been able to so quickly identify the shooter, the driver who is now dead, the prime suspect as not the person who necessarily acquired this vehicle in the first place certainly speaks to the level of fast investigation and volume in which they managed to get so much evidence, especially out of new year's day so quickly. so far what they have been able to glean, what is your take a away? >> it is fortunate law enforcement has been able to marry into technology and as a result we see it manifesting information in such a quick time. one thing we also want to look

to is the city of new orleans is a metropolitan city that has cameras. we had two different ieds that were recovered in that area. we are going to look to identify who picked up those cameras -- who picked up those ieds, or who placed them, i should say, and that is where the cameras will come into play. we want to track from when that ied was dropped off to when that person drove off, as well as license plates. that's going to be germane and quite telling in terms of who the coconspirators are because we do not want to have a terrorist cell operating internally in one of our largest cities in the united states. >> julie: we know this was a multistate operation, a multistate investigation, could potentially be an international investigation. we don't know that yet. what we do know is inside the vehicle, the truck, was an isis flag. we also know, like you mentioned, a couple ieds found

in the french quarter at an explosive device found in the vehicle, also a weapon. in fact, there were a couple weapon, he was using want to shoot at police. two cops were actually injured but fortunately thank god they are stable condition this hour. when you put all of the pieces together, it is an obvious terror move. now the question does this become more of an international investigation? at this point they are not able to necessarily pinpoint the suspect with any kind of international terror organization, but obviously that is going to be first and foremost on their priority to find out who else could be involved. >> i mean, that comes into play. we are going to conduct what we referred to as backwards investigation, meaning we are going to start at the point of the ground zero of the carnage, and that is going to direct us to where this investigation is going to take us. whether it is going to be international or domestic, once we get into the subject's phone

and computer and we look to the apps, one example is telegram, one of these apps we have had a difficult time in america penetrating or getting the information from the actual holder of telegram, but we do have the ability to hack into that same app, so that could also be quite telling, if this is something that is going internationally, or if this was an act that was used almost coconspirators to plan this targeted attack. >> julie: when you hear about a vehicle being rented in another state and then driven across state lines, this vehicle was rented in houston, texas, so you know the investigation is going to go there, but when you hear about all of the evidence, you hear this was a vehicle that was rented before hand, it's pretty safe to say the whole thing was premeditated. does that help investigators ultimately try to pinpoint other suspects if there are indeed other suspects involved in order to get charges brought against

someone considering the main suspect is dead, he was shot either by cops or self-inflicted, but it seems it was cops that shot him dead, they reacted so quickly and briefly to this. >> right, we are going to capture images as to when this individual actually rented the truck, and we are also going to look to connect that same individual, who they were in contact with. it appears there were multiple coconspirators, but often times the phone records will be quite telling and establishing that connection. also within that area of eagle pass where the truck was allegedly rented, we are going to look to latent print readers, the use of license plate readers that police vehicles have that drive around in their city, which would possibly capture images of where that truck was, and it's just amazing how we were able to find out in such a quick period of time, less than 12 hours, the pathway from ego pass to new orleans, and i think

that is going to be a substantive component that law enforcement is going to use in accessing the additional arteries as to who the other coconspirators would be. >> julie: darrin porcher, thank you so much. we appreciate you coming on this new year's day. unfortunate news we have to discuss on new year's day, thank you so much for talking to us. >> thank you. >> julie: jonathan? >> jonathan: julie, we will continue our coverage of this tragic top story as we await new updates from police after that car plowed through a new year's crowd on bourbon street. we now know the identity of the suspect, the fbi saying he was 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar. we know he was a u.s. citizen. we also know very obviously that is an arabic name. jabbar means "great" or "almighty" come often a word used for "god."

obviously the name shamsud din jabbar would appear to have arabic roots. jabbar, for instance, is another word sometimes used for "god" in arabic, it means "great" and "mighty," so what can we draw from all of this? let's bring in ted williams, fox news contributor and polities. ted from new louisiana. what are your immediate conclusions? >> you know, first i would like to offer my condolences to the good people of new orleans, louisiana. we are beginning to get a picture here. we know that this truck was rented in texas and that it was driven to louisiana by a person who has what i would define as a middle eastern name, and that is

shamsud din jabbar. and we know that the person was dressed according to many in black, military black. what authorities are trying to do at this stage is to try to determine, are we dealing with a lone wolf? or are we dealing with a sleeper cell? i would have to believe that this press conference that is coming up here in a few minutes will give us a great deal of information, perhaps. >> jonathan: yeah, and ted, i wonder what you make of the presence of what the fbi is describing as potential ieds, both in the vehicle, and according to the fbi statement, there were other potential ieds, improvised explosive devices, another word for bombs, in other words, were also located in the french quarter, so according to the fbi, not

just one, but potentially several ieds. does that speak to you about the coordination and possible involvement of others at all in this, ted? >> that could very well speak to the involvement of others. i would have to believe that in new orleans, which is a major metropolitan city, that you've got cameras all over the place, so i'm sure the authorities are looking at these various cameras to try to determine who placed some of these ieds in certain locations. that's going to be very important to the investigation. so that, along with the fact that they are now doing a scrub of this guy, jabbar's internet sites, i'm sure to determine how

and why he got to that area and who, if any, were also involved. >> jonathan: they confirmed they are looking quite obviously into his potential associations and affiliations, as the fbi puts it, with terrorist groups. we hope we will learn more in around 20 minutes or so when we expect to hear from officials in a news conference, ted. i want to talk to a little bit about security, so well in these situations. it does appear there was some work going on on those kind of physical security barriers, as so many of our viewers have seen, that can be used to block streets off, for exactly this kind of incident. it appears there was some work going on on those perhaps to strengthen them or to change them with the upcoming super bowl in new orleans, of course. it is tough to second-guess anybody in these situations, so

tough to completely secure events like new year's celebrations on the traits of new orleans, but what is your view of what was done in terms of security for this event, ted? >> you know, it is tough to secure any of these areas. i was talking to a shirt there in lake charles, louisiana, a little earlier, and he was making the same representation, that you cannot completely secure these areas. but you've got to understand that terrorists are forever looking for soft targets. if you remember, in 2017, in nice, france, there were about 86 killed as a result of the use of a vehicle by terrorist, and it was at that time that new orleans and other venues around the country decided that they had to upgrade their barricade situations, and so as

a result of vast, as you said, the super bowl is coming to new orleans in a few months, or in a month, should we say, and as a result of that and as a result i understand they are replacing some of these barricades. we must always remember, while we are sleeping, there are those out here who want to harm us and law enforcement have to be very vigilant. >> jonathan: ted, it is always great to be able to talk to you in these kind of tragic, unfortunately, situations. ted williams, thank you so much. julie, ted making the great point, it is so difficult, julie, to secure what is essentially just one big street party. how do you do it? >> julie: no command we live in a free country. new orleans, that is the draw of new orleans, is walking on foot. this driver obviously targeted a street that is always filled with foot traffic, but nonetheless come on new year's day, what better day would you find mass amounts of

people, which is why the police chief pointed out this person was looking to cause mass casualties, and they got exactly what they wanted. but the investigation is that the early phases, and it will be fascinating to find out more as to who was behind plotting this and what the actual motive was. we will continue. we are monitoring the situation out of new orleans after a driver plowed into a new year's eve crowd, killing ten people and injuring at least 35 others. what we know about the fbi's investigation so far next. nothing brings us together like eggland's best eggs. always so fresh and delicious. plus, superior nutrition. for us, it's eggs any style. as long as they're the best. eggland's best. louis! okay everybody, that's lunch! hey, alexis. >> hey, julie. i'm still just in the newsroom but we have crews going out there to figure out what is going on. the fbi is identifying the suspect as shamsud din jabbar, an american citizen who was living in texas. investigators telling fox news the 42-year-old man drove a rental truck into a crowd in new orleans right on bourbon street. as we were saying earlier, julie, couldn't have been more crowded. it is always crowded with people going out and partying, but it was also new year's eve, 3:00 a.m. on bourbon street come everyone was still out. then investigators say this man opened fire, suiting at least two police officers. the fbi says they found in ices flag inside the truck and say the fbi is investing ties to any terrorist organizations. you can see some of these photos, the white truck, the entire front end is smashed in. the authorities are all around it. and some of the pictures, this when you can see, it is a little difficult, in the right, you can see something hanging. i am being told by federal

sources that is a black flag that could also lead to more information in this investigation about possible terrorist ties, so in ices flag found inside the car and then a black what looks like a flag hanging off the truck that rammed into dozens of people, killed at least ten people, injured so many others, we don't even know what kind of injuries they had, the videos we are looking at, people laying on the ground on bourbon street and his loved ones or passersby standing over motionless bodies in shock, as ambulances moved in and authorities came into try to help. also possible explosive devices were found inside of the truck come according to the fbi, sources telling me there were at least two other devices found near the scene on bourbon street. just got off the phone a little bit ago what they federal source and a local source in world ends, trying to help authorities piece this together with witnesses, he said they were able to detonate those devices earlier this morning.

heard them mike witnesses heard them yelling "fire in the hole" in a large boom, detonating two of those devices found on bourbon street, telling people to get away from the scene because it is still active. they have the sugar bowl that is supposed to happen. we heard more about injuries and possible others involved. we will see if they have to postpone the sugar bowl. how can you really walk or get people from the hotels at 80% capacity at bourbon street and canal, to that huge dome over there for the georgia-notre dame game. in terms of the barricades, we can tell you they had some barricades up and they will also be updated because they were getting ready for the super bowl that was supposed to be happening in a matter of weeks in new orleans. we will have to see if those barricades were up prior to the attack. >> julie: it doesn't sound like they did, but if there were any barricades, she said this drivers managed to circumvent the barricades.

and now, of course, the terror aspect is certainly throwing another layer to all of this. where do investigators start -- i know they start on the scene of the crime, but then to build from there and link it to may be more than one perpetrator? >> right, that's an excellent question. obviously first of all you have the crime scene they are going to be working in new orleans. this is absolutely tragic, ten fatalities, multiple injuries, so you've got the crime scene in new orleans. you've got fbi-new orleans working that phase of the investigation as well as all of the leads that are coming from there. additionally, we now have a name suspect who has links to texason regards to that. so they are going to be following up, now that there is a name suspect, that is extremely important because they need to know who those -- who is associated with that individual peer i think of primary concern is did he act alone? my personal experience and what

i am learning based on this investigation so far is he likely did not act alone they need to nail down who he was affiliated with as soon as possible. i believe one of the key pieces of evidence right now from an investigative perspective is that vehicle that was used. that was an electrical vehicle truck. that has an infotainment system. that is new technology, the fbi does a forensic analysis come all devices that tried to pair to that vehicle and its system and a bluetooth, the gps, they can track how quickly that car went, the acceleration, where that car was, the video surveillance in the immediate area, was that car casing the area before the attack, how far in advance where they in the area? there are so many pieces of evidence they are going to be looking at, that again i think we cannot underestimate that this individual very well was not acting alone. >> julie: yeah. we do have more information about that truck. it was registered out of hou
