we learn more about the prime suspect in the deadly terror attack early this morning in that city. you are watching a new hour of fox news live. i'm bryan llenas. >> and i molly line. at least ten people are dead and 35 introductory suspect rand a pickup truck on a crowded bourbon street this morning. authorities say weapons at a nicest leg were found inside the vehicle. >> identified as 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar. a u.s.-born citizen. he was driving a ford pickup truck which appears to be rented and they are working to confirm how the subject became in possession of this vehicle. and isis flight was located on the vehicle and the fbi is working to determine the subject's potential association, terrorist organization. weapons and potential improvised explosive devices, ieds, were

located in the subjects vehicle vehicle. other potential ieds were also located in the french quarter. as of now, two ieds have been found. the fbi -- local law enforcement. working to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe. the fbi, we are working with our partners and counterterrorism. >> molly: we go live to david spunt at the white house with more on the federal investigation. david? >> well, the fbi and other agencies, local agencies, including the louisiana state police, continue to search for any potential improvised explosive devices. fox news can confirm that authorities are looking at surveillance video that shows three men and one woman place would appear to be improvised explosive devices around the french quarter. over the last few hours, teams of law enforcement from local and national have been walking

around to make sure those are not viable, trying to detonate any of those possible. back to the white house, president biden, who is actually not at the white house, he is at camp david, but he has been receiving multiple different briefings from the highest levels of the fbi, the department of homeland security, the department of justice, and other different officials, intelligence officials, to get the latest on what happened in new orleans this morning. before heading to camp david, where he will spend the night tonight, he said this. >> what happened? >> the action was one of anger and frustration. >> he called it anger and frustration but did release and more thorough statement earlier today, saying my heart goes out to the victims and their family civilly time to celebrate the holiday. there is no justification for violence of any kind and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation's communities. meanwhile, the man moving into the white house behind me less than three weeks, president-elect donald trump put out a statement on social media

earlier today. it reads, when i said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by democrats and the fake news media, but it turned out to be true. the crime rate our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones come and putting the brave officers of the new orleans to police department. the trump administration will fully support the city of new orleans as they recover from this act of pure evil. the former president's criminal's coming in, meaning into our country, but to be clear the suspect was born in the united states, 42-year-old and an army veteran. the fbi is the lead agency in this investigation, going through the social media and any other social media accounts associated with the suspect. we also another some fbi activity in houston, where this suspect was based. separately, and there is no indication that this is related at any time to what happened in new orleans, law-enforcement officials are investigating rnan

las vegas. authorities say one person is dead, several others are injured. the white house also noted that president biden has been briefed on that matter, as well, but we don't want to get ahead of our skis. authorities are not saying there's any connection between new orleans and las vegas, but i want to point out, president biden also watching that, as well. back to you. >> molly: great point, the people at the highest levels of our government have been briefed on both of these situations. david spunt, thank you. >> bryan: let's go live to madison scarpino on the ground in new orleans. madison, what's the latest there? >> well, bryan, we are now learning about a few of the victims. one of the ten people killed is a 2015 graduate of a lafayette, louisiana, high school, tyler back. the school says he was a standout sports star and the university of georgia confirms that one of its students is

among those who are critically injured right now, and we are here right outside the iconic bourbon street, which is now an active crime scene. law-enforcement and bomb dogs are scouring the area. the fbi says multiple ieds were found in the suspect's car and the french quarter, and isis flight was on the back of the car, and the fbi is asking the public for all the help they can get because as w saying, they believe the evil. and when we face evil, we have,n indeed stand in strength. in a time of crisis. >> officials announcing just hours ago, tonight's sugar bowl football game between the university of georgia and notre dame is now postponed for 24 hours. over 60,000 fans are expected to

reporting here that we have learned law-enforcement officials telling fox that both local and federal officials are looking at surveillance footage showing three men and one woman placing what appears to be improvised explosive devices in the french quarter. they have been going to all those sites to make sure that they are safe. we are talking about pipe bombs found in this vehicle, multiple guns, remote-control detonator, and now they are searching the french quarter -- they have surveillance images of these folks placing improvised explosive devices, potentially. what are your thoughts, hearing that information? >> well, bryan, i think this is really critical. the most important short-term priority for authorities right now is to make sure the attack is over. make sure that any accomplices who were involved in planning this attack are apprehended and they are taken off the streets so they can't do any more harm. the fact that this plot is

seemingly fairly complex, with multiple ieds found across the city, that tells me that authorities are reasonable in suspecting that jabbar did not act alone and there may be others at large. that is job one. tract on everybody else who may be involved in this plot, incapacitate them, take them into custody and make sure they can't do anything more harm. >> molly: nathan, molly here. this is senator john kennedy of louisiana, who spoke very passionately today and had a lot of interesting things to say. take a listen. >> for those people who don't believe in objective evil, all you have to do is look at what happened in our city early this morning. i am... if this doesn't trigger the gag reflex of every american, every fair-minded american, i'll be very surprised.

years, recent months, the group has been reclaiming its strength and now we see isis affiliates and isis supporters committing terror attacks across the globe, in places like afghanistan, pakistan, russia, iran, and now, tragically, in the heart of a great american city. we need to understand what happened. we need to understand how a plot of this apparent reach and complexity was able to incubate and be executed right under our noses. the fbi has done a hard job. homeland security has a hard job. they've got to stop the bad guys every sickle time. the bad guys only have to be right once. that said, even though they have a hard job, we need to have complete accountability about what authorities knew, what pieces of the puzzle they were not able to put together, and why, because we got to stop this from happening again. >> bryan: nathan, this isn't new. we have seen these car ramming attracts around the world. i'm wondering, what do we know

with your expertise about the fact that this isis propaganda videos that have encouraged such attacks, are they still really poorproliferating, being spreadn the united states, and what does this say about terrorists' ability to target young men here in the united states? >> well, this is a great question that i think authorities will need to spend a lot of time looking at. how exactly did jabbar and the others who may have been involved with him come to be radicalized to violence? there is a sewer of online terrorist content that is, unfortunately, still very, very easy for people to access, and we have seen over the years groups like isis in particular, but other terrorist groups, too, use their online presence to reach vulnerable populations, radicalizing violence, and in some cases they will travel to places like syria or other war zones to pick up a rifle and

bourbon street -- were malfunctioning. despite taking steps to hard in that, the terrorist still managed to drive through. alexis mcadams has been following all of this all day long and gathering the details, alexis, do you. >> hi, molly. one thing after both press conferences, people had one major question: how did this guy drive right down bourbon street? authorities say they did not have the blockades up because they were being "upgraded" for the super bowl so they thought they would park this cop car, which i can see in some videos on social media, they parked an suv right in front of the intersection but was not blocking sidewalks, the driver went right around the cop car and the sidewalk and into the crowd. listen. >> this particular terrorist drove around onto the sidewalk and got around the hard target. we did have a car there. we had barriers there. we had officers there.

and they still got around. now the wedges that you see out there, as well, we knew that that had malfunction problems, and i want you to understand -- and it got stuck. there is no way that ambulance could get in or out, people couldn't get in or out, so we knew they were malfunctioning. so we did indeed have a plan, but the terrorist defeated it. >> and then obviously playing monday morning quarterback, i was in new york city yesterday come in times square, they had the place locked down. okay? you couldn't get near it. that was kind of the difference in planning when you look at kind of what everybody did for new year's eve. but these renderings you are looking at, you guys, are what the barriers are going to look like. they are stainless steel they go all across on bourbon street at those intersections. those were taken down to try and prepare for the super bowl. a source telling me the started upgrading the barriers in november, supposed to be

wrapping up but hey, they still weren't done for new york new year's eve. investigators tell us 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar used to be in the army and was honorably discharged at some point. he is the person investigators say drove right onto bourbon street killing at least ten people, an american citizen who was living in texas. police say he drove a rental car into the crowd in new orleans, turning and trying to run as many people over as possible. i mean, imagine that you are out there celebrating, especially new orleans, and this happens. that only did he just uses car, he pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting at least two police officers. so we talk a lot about what it looked like, but you can see in this video, somebody took it from one of the areas right above, from going out there, people go on all of these kind of areas to stand right outside, and you can see what is going on down there commend these people are in shock, we had to blur it, but there are bodies on the ground all up and down bourbon street and these people that were probably out celebrating with them are looking down in disbelief and shock, thinking is my friend

alive? they are not moving. i can't even imagine what this was like. authorities are now trying to unite people who were injured with their families. others are fighting out their loved ones aren't coming home in 2025. the fbi said they did find the isis flag on the back of the truck and they are looking at surveillance images to see who else could have been involved. >> molly: alexis come a great point, there are a lot of people grieving and suffering in hospitals and still working toward recovery, this just getting underway, thank you. alexis mcadams. let's bring in maureen o'connell, a retired fbi agent. thank you for being here, for your insights. we have been delving into this throughout the day and one of the things we haven't talked a lot about is the background of this individual. we know he is an american citizen from texas, shamsud din jabbar. he is also an army veteran. we don't have a lot of information about what he did in the army, but they said today that he -- they believe he was honorably discharged, but they are still working through the information in figuring out more about that. your thoughts?

>> well, you know, an army veteran is a person like anyone else and can be radicalized like anyone else. we would like to think that would never happen, but it has in fact happened before, so that's very, very unfortunate. i'd like to find out what his training was. is he eod? you know, is he trained in explosives? that would be very interesting for us to know. the fact that he and his group had several ieds is absolutely shocking. not only did he have ieds, he had a handgun, a long gun. he drove hours and hours. he used his vehicle to run people over. this was at its -- in its basic form, a multipronged approach that was designed to take out as many americans as possible, and with them flying the isis flag, that tells me that this was an isis attack in america, in one of our most coveted, most iconic

american cities come on, you know, the start of our new year. >> bryan: maureen, bryan here. our sources are telling us they have surveillance images of four individuals potentially placing ieds throughout the french quarter. anything we will see those surveillance images and why do you think the images were not shared as soon as possible? >> well, because you have to keep some things close to the best. the images are blurry. i have seen a few of them. it is hard to -- i don't know how helpful they would be at this point unless you saw that same group of people someplace else or you saw them at the airbnb or wherever they stated. there is always a lot of reasons to keep things close to the vest so i am not really sure what this one is, but it was a go-to move of mine, i will say, because sometimes you just need to keep it close there. i am -- >> molly: go-ahead.

>> no, go-ahead. >> molly: they are talking about a range of suspects, saying they are not going to rule anything out. now we have a scene in houston and looking at the struck near the border, caught on camera near eagle pass, your thoughts on just the variety of scenes that are beginning to develop? >> in any case like this, there is all kinds of places you are going to have to go back to. they are going to look at these lprs, license plate readers, and find out where this car has been. they are also going to follow that car, and what they get it to an isolated area, they are going to try to identify whatever phones were in that car and then follow those phones wherever they go to or wherever they came from. those type of things will give you a lot of information. they've got a suspect's phone now because he is dead, but it is probably some sort of a burner phone but that doesn't mean you can't trace it back somewhere. all of these things are going on simultaneously and experts in the field, each of these arenas, are following up and bringing it

all back to the command post. it is the management of all of that information. the pulling it in and pushing it back out to the areas that needs to go to, that is happening at an incredibly fast pace right now, and everybody's adrenaline is popping really hot on this because they've got to find these other people because of these people are willing to do what they did this morning, they are willing to do anything. >> bryan: yeah, exactly. so are you surprised that the allstate sugar bowl is postponed until tomorrow? are you surprised that game is still going on? >> no. i think by tomorrow they are going to have a lot of things locked down, and you know, they may be able to identify them by tomorrow. we may have a few in custody by tomorrow. but they are going to really ramp up their game by now. the other thing that concerned me was the discussions this morning during the press conference or a few hours ago about those bollards that were

being put up or not put up, but they always leave the sidewalks vulnerable, and i've noticed that in places where i have been. i happened to work the santa monica farmers' market massacre in i think 2003, where ten people were killed and about 70 were injured, and it was without a doubt the most horrific scene i've ever worked in my decades long career, but it's, you know, at that point, they put the bollards up in the center of the street, and i don't want any place unless, you know, i don't walk down a street in line with whatever trees there are more in line with whatever light posts there are. i don't walk in open areas. and with this truck being an ev, you probably couldn't even hear it coming. >> molly: that's a great point. this comes in the wake of just very, very recently the attack on the christmas market in germany, so to some extent this was in the public consciousness,

in the consciousness of investigators. my question when this all began to unfold this morning was how a shocking it would be a vehicle could get onto bourbon street at all, much less a high-profile holiday like this. if you are the perpetrator, you must have some idea of bourbon street is crowded often but on this particular day the security would be very high, so it seems there was a particular amount of ambition and planning involved that someone could even think you could possibly do this and have it actually worked. >> yes. yes, you are correct. and there was a ton of planning that went into this. if you were to pull up with your car and run into people, that's one thing. but when you have the layers and the complexity of everything that they did, multiple groups of people, ieds planted all over, and there are two ieds, my understanding is, that replanted far away from bourbon street, and the question is why were they planted so far away? one answer might be, and it's

sheer speculation on my point, that they were designed to draw resources, meaning first responder resources, to those locations, so that they could create more cottage. >> molly: that's a great point, and sometimes you are warned about a secondary device after an initial attack that aims for the first responders that are responding, that sort of thing. maureen o'connell, thank you very much, retired fbi special agent, we appreciate your insights. bryan? >> bryan: coming up, in my report on that cybertruck explosion outside of trump international hotel in las vegas. it is now being investigated as a potential terror attack.

new orleans. now fox news correspondent marianne rafferty with the breaking news details on this stunning story. marianne? >> yeah, bryan, stunning a good way to put it. just a few hours after the deadly terrorist attack in new orleans, the tesla cybertruck exploded and caught fire outside the trump towers in las vegas. this justin from elon musk who post on x, "we have now confirmed that the explosion was caused very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. all vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion." sheriff kevin mcveigh hill has not confirmed those details yet, only saying the truck exploded in the trump in front of the trump building just before 9:00 this morning. >> please stay away from the area right now because we don't know what we don't know. we have had to evacuate the hotel, the vast majority of people have moved over to the

resorts world. >> now law enforcement is investigating a number of leads but didn't have any specific details to share right now. >> bryan: marianne rafferty, thank you for that report, appreciate it. >> molly: we are going to bring in jonathan mcgill lee, former fbi special agent on this. jonathan, what do you make of what we are seeing in las vegas with this explosion, this fire right outside the trump hotel? >> well come as soon as i started seeing some videos of this explosion because there is actually videos of the explosion, and then there is videos from inside the hotel while the vehicle is burning, you are hearing fireworks go off, and the explosion was not typical for a lithium-ion batteries. they typically burn at a rapid rate, but it is not typically an explosion, it would be more of a fire. and also the color is different. what we are seeing here is not

typical, from what i know about lithium-ion batteries, is not typical, so i would agree that appears to be an explosive that was put into the vehicle or it was fireworks that somehow went off. the interesting thing, though, the individual was in the truck when they went off, so whatever it was come if it was an accident, he was killed, but if it was a bombing, a suicide bombing, but i find it very peculiar that this happened the same exact day as what happened in new orleans. i know they don't have the information to connect those at this time, but it's very interesting. also what i am seeing is the fact that this is a tesla that is connected to elon musk, and the trump towers. now that points in a certain political direction that if it turns out to be a terrorist attack, it is going to be very interesting where that leads if

they can get information out of that, as well. >> bryan: we are still trained to figure out motive here. no indication it is connected to new orleans, but we are now dealing with two vehicle-style terror attacks today. we are going into the inauguration. what kind of steps are we going to be talking about here in terms of vehicle security? this is top of mind now for everyone. >> i'm not as concerned for the actual inauguration. that is a national security event. everything that we have possibly that could be rolled out, and those people think outside the box, will be there. what i'm concerned about are the events like we saw last night. so during the inauguration, they have all of these inauguration balls. those are going to be targets. we have different bowl games coming up, the super bowl coming up. the super bowl is not just one game. it's a week of all these different things going on, and

to an extent where an entire city is consumed by events around the super bowl, that is a concern because as we have seen it is as easy as driving a vehicle, whether you have a bomb or not, it's as easy as fighting a group of people and driving a vehicle into them. i think this, somewhere along the way, i think people have figured they want to cause terror or death and destruction, they figured out along the way that a vehicle attack is the easiest thing to do, and it is fast, and unfortunately law enforcement is going to have to stay ahead of this. >> molly: jonathan, i think you've touched on something we are concerned about, and that is copycats in the weeks and months ahead. >> right. so the thing about these vehicle attacks, in this case, it is very difficult at the trump tower, that is very difficult because that is a

hotel. you have to be able to approach the hotel. in the case of new orleans, there is no reason why that individual should have been able to get on that street that is considered a special event every night of the week. i think law-enforcement and city officials need to start looking at perimeter security just like the secret service has had issues with twice that we know of. if you leave these avenues of approach open for bad guys, they will take full advantage, and that is what law-enforcement has to start looking at, doing deep dives, threat assessments, and figuring out the avenues of approach that vehicle attackers, that bombers, people with weapons, that they can take and try to mitigate or eliminate those avenues of approach. >> bryan: jonathan, what about the use of evs? the batteries are heavier and they can cause a lot more da

damage. >> yeah, well, if you put a dump truck there -- as far as approaching, if you put a heavy vehicle there or two heavy vehicles, which doesn't really cost the city anything, you've plenty of vehicles in the cities, park some vehicles. as far as setting it off, i think what you see with the electric vehicle is if they catch on fire, they just burn. they don't explode, typically. >> molly: musk posted on x in his posting that they believed it was caused by large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of a rented cybertruck. what do you make of that? >> now there is an interesting clue to this because tesla has the ability to monitor way more than most vehicles with their vehicles. and the fact that was at a rental place, now they are going to have a connection to who was in that vehicle, or at least who

it was registered to, and follow that path. in one way it makes it better because you can identify who rented it, but in another case, it can be more difficult because they could have rented it and handed it off to somebody else if there were multiple people involved. i think what we are going to find is that the person that did this attack has a vendetta against trump and musk, and this is political. that's what i believe. the evidence that i am seeing points to. >> bryan: jonathan, just in general, i want to get your sense of the events today, particularly going back to new orleans. what is sticking out in your mind right now, as a former fbi agent, about just the threat assessment, and may be the thing that is most concerning you right now? >> awareness. it's as if everybody in the united states, including our leaders, have dropped the ball on awareness. i wrote a book about awareness

called "sheep no more," and i have been screaming this for years and years and years. and awareness is the key. and aware human is the best tool that can be used against an attacker, and i think awareness that these things can happen, that they will happen, and that there are ways to mitigate these circumstances needs to be looked at by city officials, by police, and by civilians. >> bryan: jonathan gilliam, thank you very much for that insight on both of these terror attacks. again, no information here that they were coordinated or related to one another, but it is very odd here with two trucks and two potential terror attacks happening on the same day. jonathan, thank you. >> molly: the fbi has just released a photo of the suspect in the new orleans terror attack. here it is. shamsud din jabbar, the

42-year-old texas native with a military background, was shot and killed in a firefight with cops just moments after he plowed through those crowds on the famed bourbon street just after 3:00 a.m. wednesday morning, leaving at least ten dead and 35 injured. david spunt continually covering this for us has more. david? >> hey, molly. we just got some information from our colleague at the pentagon, jennifer griffin, talking about jabbar's army service. it says he was in the regular army as a human resource specialist and i.t. specialist from march 2007 until january 2015, then he was in the army reserve as an i.t. specialist from january 2015 until july 2020. he deployed to afghanistan from february 2009 to january 2010. he held the rank of staff sergeant at the end of service. so this is a man that was born in texas, served in the army. authorities are executing search

42-year-old suspect shamsud din jabbar, texas native with a military background. according to our jennifer griffin, that military background includes a history of him being army reserve i.t. specialist from january 2015 until july 2020. he deployed to afghanistan from february 2009 to january 2010. he held the rank of staff sergeant at the end of service, and his awards, well, they include many. army commendation medal, army achievement medal, army good conduct medal, won those metals multiple times, as many as four times, and now we are also getting some sad news here out of new orleans. we now know that the death toll is now up to 15 people. all day it was at least ten. it is now 15. new orleans corner saying in a statement, "as of now, 15 people are deceased. it will take several days to

a staff sergeant at the end of his service, a number of awards come as you just laid out. that doesn't describe somebody who you typically think of as a jihadist, someone who have an isis flag attached to his truck and drive into a crowd in new orleans. at the same time we have seen this before. we have seen a military officer, previously in the attack down in the south there. it was radicalized online, following some jihads, so we have seen it happen on rare occasions. deeply concerning you have to wonder how an american-born in the united states, served in the military, served apparently with honor and had an honorable discharge, and then four years later ends up driving to a crowd and potentially conspiring with another four people, three men and a woman or planting ieds around the french quarter in new orleans. obviously very disturbing situation. and you wonder if there is any connection to the tesla attack, the cybertruck explosion in
