4:10 am
>> griff: chanly painter is here with more. >> good morning, police say they have identified the person who was driving that tesla cyber truck. it is believed the driver was a colorado springs native with military experience. the person was killed in the explosion. seven others were injured. authorities say they found gas and filled canisters as well as mortars in the truck. they were able to trace that vehicle back to colorado using video footage captured at charging stations. now investigators are trying to determine if there is a link to the attack in new orleans. watch. >> we're absolutely investigating any connectivity to what happened in new orleans as well as other attacks that have been occurring around the world no. overt isis flag as was seen in new orleans. but, again, we are investigating every aspect of this. >> rented from the same ride share company turo. in a statement spokes men said we are heart broken by the what

happened in las vegas. we are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents cyber truck investigation did involve input. posted on x we have confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or are a bomb carried in the bed of the rented cyber truck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. all vehicle at the lem tri was positive at the time of the explosion. musk and police upwards and not breaking the doors on the hotel lobby. incredible. >> lawrence: thanks, chanly. >> shannon: thank you. incredible. i think we will learn a lot more here. what is remarkable there is not any updates or briefings on the calendar yet today. i'm sure there will eventually be one. we are really dependent on an update from the federal authorities on the ground in new
4:12 am
orleans and any update coming from las vegas to determine if there is any real connection here to the two events. >> griff: all we really have now are the similarities. and as. >> tom: homan mentioned one similarity we already know about, they both served in the military. there is also he thinks we should learn whether or not they both had recent foreign travel. and that would suggest that that played a part in them being radicalized or being, you know, isis-inspired it. will be something to learn. one thing i think we learned, lawrence, from your interview with joey jones is that there are some non-similarities in the way that this bomb and the cyber truck seemed to be not as sophisticated, i suppose is the right word, than what they found in shamsud-din jabbar's truck in new orleans. >> lawrence: i also asked them
4:13 am
about the ieds that were in new orleans. and if there are any similarities, what type of information would law enforcement be looking for. connected to. this is what he had to say about that. >> you think something like black powder or fuel, gas, or propane, something like that. and you want to create a detonation out of it, you have to keep it closely contained. so if you put all those fireworks in that fuel tank in the back of a standard suv, depending on what they use to set it off. if they just lit a fire. or if they actually used something like a pipe bomb, if they just lit a fire back there, the fact that that tesla truck is hardened and contained it might have been the only reason it had an explosive property at all in the back of an suv it might have just burned. on the idea of the creating a signature, 100 percent. can you recover fingerprints from tape from a bomb that's exploded. d.n.a., forensic evidence and also serial numbers -- if they were created for remote detonation, that means there is electronics on there that was manufactured somewhere.
4:14 am
we do a fantastic job of tracking that down. >> lawrence: find it interesting what joey is suggesting the fact that the vehicle was contained like that. that that almost became the bomb itself. he thought he was transporting the bomb. but he ended up being the bomb. and that's why it went off in that way. >> griff: as we look for more answers, ted williams, fox news contributor, former d.c. homicide detective has now gone to new orleans. ted, you had great reporting yesterday. you are now on the ground in new orleans. what can you tell us? what are you learning? >> >> you know, guys, i would love to say happy new year to you. but there is a sobering reality here on the ground in the french quarters in new orleans that 15 individuals went out to celebrate the new years and never came home to their loved one. what is happening right now is that law enforcement is moving in a backwards manner to try to determine as much as they can
4:15 am
about this terrorist. and yes i do call him a terrorist. what they are actually doing is doing a scrub of all of his internet sites. they are talking to relatives and friends there in houston, texas they are also doing what i define as a plate reared. if you come in from will houston texas, you go down what is known as interstate 10 coming in to new orleans. i would have to believe that they have done a scrub there to try to determine who could be involved with this guy. >> lawrence: ted, i'm curious because you are down on the ground. they said there are other suspects that were involved with this. what is the mood like? are people panicked? are people roaming the streets there in new orleans or do you
4:16 am
see most of the people sheltered in place? >> no, my friend. it doesn't seem as though people are panicked there are a lot of individuals who are getting ready to go to the superdome for the sugar bowl later tonight or this afternoon. so there is really not a panic. but there is eerie feeling as people walk down the street there is no doubt in my mind that they are thinking about what took place here that should not have taken place in any city this is something that law enforcement has to be very aware of and vigilant not let your guard down. i believe just for a second here in new orleans. that the guard was let down when these barriers were not in place and when this alleged killer went around those barriers on
4:17 am
the sidewalk and wound up mowing down all of these individuals, these people. >> shannon: ted, to be clear, for many much us who have been right where you are standing several times, you know to be vigilant, i mean, it's not news to say new orleans sphrufers a crime crisis. so you are always parents who go to celebrate from local colleges and universities, even in surrounding states. vigilance is key. i imagine more so today than ever though as so many people will be arriving there in that city for the big game tonight. >> you know, you are absolutely right. what we have to do as americans because we need to understand that there are individuals who want to kill us. you have got either isis inspired people like this killer or you got isis directed people. the isis inspired people are out here.
4:18 am
so we are counting on citizens. when you see something, say something. talk to law enforcement about anything that you may see. >> griff: ted, just finally, you and i have covered a lot of crime scenes and as you are on the ground now, what do you want to know next? what is your focus right now in trying to learn more? >> griff, what i want to know is more about anybody who may very well be affiliated or associated with this heinous act here in new orleans. so i'm hoping that law enforcement in some give us more information about individuals they believe may very well be involved with this killer. >> griff: yeah, they don't give those details. maybe we will get an update. we will talk to the governor of louisiana. maybe he has something to share. ted williams, thank you. we will check in with you later in the show. >> lawrence: yeah, i don't understand the -- i get what the
4:19 am
leaders are trying to do. they don't want panic to happen. you can't say that you have a manhunt now for other people involved with this tragedy and then at the same time say the people are safe. those two things can't be true at the same time i'm sure the idea nor law enforcement on the scene. the part i worry about, yes, inside you have the stadium, superdome, there is going to be magna tom terse. bomb squad do sweeps make sure there is no explosives inside. as people gather outside, to make their way there, that's where the enemy is going to tried attack. i don't think you can say that's safe. >> shannon: they are going to be gathering before and along after the game. so all of that is obviously going to be key. the attorney general of the state joined us at the top of the 6:00 hour this morning. and i don't know, we seem to all sort of pick up on, perhaps, there is some differences in opinion on how to move forward. she actually suggested she would
4:20 am
have waited to host the game until tomorrow. listen. >> first priority today is the safety of everybody in new orleans while we kind of carry out and go through with this game. i did express some concern about that. yesterday there were discussions about whether to have the game last night, which frankly thought was absurd. we still had bodies that had to be removed to the ground to secure the crime scene and so seemed that was not a hard decision to make even if the logistics were more complicated. the governor has added 100 national guard to that area to ensure that it is secure. but, you know, there is a lot going on. it's an active investigation of a crime scene after a terrorist event. and i don't think we could -- i mean, it's not possible to take this too seriously.
4:21 am
i would ask probably at least have postponed it until friday. you know, i think that they have secured the city. it's okay, i guess if they are going forward with it. but i would probably have at least delayed it to friday. >> shannon: she also aired frustration to us earlier about not getting new information from the federal authorities who are still leading this investigation. they haven't yet turned it over to our knowledge to the local authorities on the ground. but, if you -- we all know the governor of louisiana. he means business. i mean, to her point, he is doing everything he can to secure that city. even went out to dinner last night. took a picture of himself doing so. he will be joining us in just a bit. this is still fresh. to her point, i mean, it's 7:20 a.m. in the east coast. this happened 3:15 central time yesterday. we are about 27 hours out from when this happened. this is still very fresh and the authorities are still very much in the middle of this investigation. >> griff: with a manhunt for suspects. you can't overstate this is the top law enforcement officer in a state that just suffered
