we are parents that will have to -- making funeral arrangements as we speak that are waiting to have their loved ones released to them. again, i mean, each of those is a reminder of -- of the terrorism that exists and the evil out there that they want to afflict on america. >> molly: another story we're following, the explosion of a tesla cyber truck outside of trump hotel in las vegas. the blast killed the driver. at least seven others injured. investigators are looking for possible links to the massacre in new orleans. >> rich: jeff paul has the latest from las vegas. let's go to garrett tenney in new orleans. >> good morning to you. the top priority for investigators now is tracking down anyone involved in the attack. the planning but especially in carrying out of this attack. we have learned that
6:03 am
investigation includes an airbnb rental in new orleans where a fire broke out hours after this attack. louisiana's attorney general said they believe the individuals involved used that as a home base to make at least soft improvised explosive devices found around the french quarter yesterday morning. we learned hours before this attack the 42-year-old suspect jabbar posted videos on social media about his support for isis and expressed a desire to kill people. new orleans police chief gave conflicting information to what we've been hearing from others. >> there are some people of interest that we -- i know the f.b.i. wants to screen as to whether or not they were associated or not. so this is not an accomplice situation as of yet. they are looking at anyone and everyone who could potentially
6:04 am
have been affiliated. may very well be they're not and may be this is a lone wolf. we do not have final confirmation on that. >> overnight investigators in houston started searching jabbar's home as they worked to piece together a timeline of how and when he was radicalized and who has been in contact with leading up to this attack. >> rich: garrett, what are we learning about this suspect? >> what we know, he is a u.s. citizen. he was born in texas. served 13 years in the u.s. army and army reserves including a nearly one year deployment in afghanistan. he doesn't have much in terms of a criminal record or history of violence as far as we have bone able to find. a misdemeanor for theft back in 2002. as far as any changes in behavior that could suggest him being radicalized, a man who is married to jabbar's ex-wife told
6:05 am
"the new york times" jabbar has been acting erratically in recent months. they had to stop the two daughters they share with jabbar and keep them from spent time with him. we have to warn this video, hard to watch, of the aftermath of yesterday's attack. as this investigation continues we're hearing more from folks who survived this attack, including the man who shot this video. >> just the traumatic parts of it. the human nature what anyone is capable of. the bodies, mangled, strong, several unrecognizable. we had seen several of them talking just like me and you now. only difference is we walked inside the door. 20 feet away from these victims. we're still breathing, probably not going to make it. >> today here in new orleans there is a very heavy police and
6:06 am
security presence ahead of the big college football game. the sugar bowl taking place that was rescheduled from yesterday and moved to today in the wake of this attack. tens of thousands of fans are in town for that game. police say they aren't taking any chances and will have all the resources needed from both the federal, state and local level to insure the safety of this event, rich. >> rich: more on that coming up. >> molly: we're also monitoring another potential terror attack in las vegas. a tesla cyber truck exploded outside of the trump international hotel killing the driver and injuring at least seven people. authorities are looking at possible connections between these two incidents. jeff paul is live in las vegas with the latest. good morning, jeff. >> good morning, molly. thats the question on everyone's mind when hearing what happened at the trump hotel in las vegas. was it somehow related to the terrorist attack in new orleans?
6:07 am
at the moment authorities saying they believe this incident in nevada was an isolated one but they are investigating any possible connections between new orleans and just terrorism in general. >> i know everybody is interested in that word and trying to see if we can say it is a terrorist attack. that's our goal and what we're trying to do. we have a ton of resources dedicated to right now. we're doing it with our partners. >> this all unfolded yesterday morning. investigators say it involved a 2024 tesla cyber truck rented through truro. authorities say the driver rented the truck in colorado where he drove to las vegas and pulling up to the valet area at the trump hotel. seconds later witnesses saw smoke inside the truck, a flash and an explosion. inside was the driver. gasoline canisters and large fire work mortars were
6:08 am
discovered. the driver died but seven other innocent bystanders were hurt. had it been a different vehicle involved and not a tesla cyber truck, the explosion could have been more devastating. >> the fact it was a cyber truck limited the damage that occurred inside of the valet. it had most of the blast go up through the truck and out. in fact, if you look on that video you'll see that the front glass doors at the trump hotel were not even broken by that blast. >> in addition to the investigation surrounding any possible links between new orleans or to terrorism in general authorities are looking into why entities owned by both president-elect donald trump and tesla owner elon musk were involved. both are obvious political allies and worked together hand in hand during the 2024 political season. so far authorities haven't put
6:09 am
out the name of the suspect but again they do reference that they believe he acted alone, molly. >> molly: certainly looking into potential political motivations. thank you. >> rich: let's bring in former dhs advisor charles moreno. thank you for joining us this morning. now that you have the major events happening, not only the super bowl next month but the sugar bowl in town and moving forward with that, all the fans in town. the new year holiday. how are law enforcement officials changing their security posture given what just happened. >> it's obvious they don't have a firm grasp on the threat. they're conducting link analysis now in the f.b.i. to find the commonalities between the two events, if any. in the meantime, with respect to the most imminent event taking place tonight, the sugar bowl, they have to harden those security plans the best that they can if they want to go
6:10 am
ahead with the event. that includes making sure that screening going into the stadium is going to be up to par to discover any devices like ieds since these were used during the attack on bourbon street. they have a heavy lift going on. i don't think it's the best time for new orleans to host this event based on the 24-hour delay, that tells me that one, the threat is still out there in some way, shape or form and they don't quite understand it and two, they didn't have overall confidence in the initial security plan set up to support this game. so i'm sure they've made some changes. but with respect to the super bowl, they will get a lot more federal support as a special event designation from the department of homeland security and there is still some time for planning on that and changing those plans. >> rich: let's listen to new orleans officials on how
6:11 am
prepared for new year's on bourbon street and the failures there. >> we were able to build in replacement into the super bowl infrastructure package. the city of new orleans has moved forward with that infrastructure and it is nearing completion. balards were not up because they are near completion with the expectation of being completed. >> we knew these would mal function so we did indeed have a plan but the terrorist defeated it. >> those are the metal pieces that present cars from rolling over. they had regular police cars there. when you go to any big city event, they've got large dump trucks here. shouldn't new orleans have done that? >> well again, convoluted answer that didn't instill confidence in those going to the sugar bowl this evening.
6:12 am
look, this was their way of trying to defend the indefensible in that they didn't have a secure perimeter around that event on bourbon street. that's unacceptable. you can't say we had barriers in effect but yet a car was able to go around it. that is not an effective perimeter. anyone would tell you that. there certainly was not a layered approach to security to fortify that perimeter. you had this vehicle, all he had to go through was one police car and he was on bourbon street. the security plan had many flaws. we saw great reaction from the two law enforcement officers that returned fire and took the subject out. but, you know, in a sense those law enforcement officers were also set up to fail based on the weakness of the overall security plan. there has to be accountability for that.
6:13 am
>> rich: charles moreno, thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> molly: we are also getting our first details on some of the people killed yesterday in new orleans. this is nichole perez. a mom to a 4-year-old boy. she was 28 years old. also killed in the attack was tiger beck, he played football for princeton. he was just 27 years old. >> it was surreal. i still get -- i feel like i didn't know what was going on. i knew something currently was still going on. tried to figure out how to get down there and help. >> rich: we're hearing from survivors of this horrific attack as we monitor the scene out of houston. federal agents are searching the suspect's home and keeping our eyes on the white house. the president con convenience his national security team to

6:22 am
your thoughts. >> well, the incident shows how vulnerable we can be and how a lone actor, assuming he is a lone actor, can create enormous disruption and damage and death. it is an act of pure evil. he wanted to kill a lot of people and succeeded in that. it appears from the initial reports that he was radicalized over the last year and you don't need to be in a camp in afghanistan or an iranian-backed militia in syria to be radicalized. it can be done over the internet. an interesting story here in the next several weeks as we understand how he came to accept these beliefs and act on them. >> molly: unfortunately something we've seen before. the investigation a little more than 24 hours in. the investigators have said they're looking for a range of suspects and president biden had this to say about the investigation from camp david.

take a listen. >> president biden: the law enforcement intelligence community are continuing to look for any connections, associations, or co-conspirators. we have nothing additional to report at this time. the investigation is continuing to be active and no one should jump to conclusions. >> molly: not a lot of information there. what sort of leadership would you like to see coming from the top in these days and weeks ahead? >> first of all remember we have some institutions which are deeply involved in this, the f.b.i., the assistance of the national counter terrorism center are drawn in on all the elements of the government in order to look into the background of both of these individuals, the las vegas and the new orleans incidents and see if there are connections, to understand what motivated them to, to see who might have participated in that process of radicalization of at least the
6:24 am
texan who showed up in new orleans. and so there is a lot going on in our government that is designed to identify all the connections that we possibly can get and get a bigger, broader, more accurate picture of how this came about. it would be interesting to me, one of the things that we ought to be concerned about, is why were the middle stanchions to keep people driving down bourbon street. they said they weren't working trying to get ready to the super bowl. the sugar bowl is an important national security event and should have been preparations to make certain there was not vehicle traffic on bourbon street, anybody who has been to new orleans and walked down that street and anybody eaten there and knows where it is, this is a major hub of traffic and people enjoying themselves and any kind of event whether a super bowl or
6:25 am
sugar bowl. >> molly: or new year's eve. there is a headline in the "wall street journal." terror strikes new orleans. it is a reality the next administration has to deter and defeat. >> i think that's right. let's be clear. the first response to some of these incidents tend to be wrong. the idea that this was somehow the truck had -- the truck involved in new orleans had crossed the border into the utes and some public figures said it was example of the failure of the immigration system and control of our border. that didn't happen. the truck did come -- was apparently in texas. it was a rental truck and happened it might have crossed over the border.
6:26 am
we have to be careful. let's hold off with coming to deep conclusions. but yes, this is an example in all likelihood of radicalization of an individual who found a new faith and was motivated by that new faith and people who potentially preyed upon him to act on violent beliefs and ideologies. evil exists in this world and we have to live with that reality and prepare for that reality and do everything we can to protect the homeland. >> molly: karl rove, thank you for joining us this morning. greatly appreciate your insights, rich. >> rich: new details on the suspect in the deadly terror attack in new orleans with alarming youtube videos indicating he was inspired by isis. we're outside his home in houston, texas coming up next. >> at the end of the day we need not let fear paralyze us. that's the problem in this country. when we do that, the terrorists win. mobile service is our business,

6:33 am
about who he was. the f.b.i. says that he was posting disturbing videos on social media just hours before this attack saying that he was inspired by isis. he had this desire to kill. authorities also say there was an isis flag found in his car. so again this trailer park overnight we have video of swat and f.b.i. swarmed for hours until late into the night. officials also spent hours clearing everyone out who lives nearby taking precautions. here is what we're learning. shamsud-din jabbar was a u.s. citizen from texas and served in the army between 20007 and 2015 as it and human resource specialist. he was deployed to afghanistan for a year and stayed in the army reserve as an i.t. specialist until 2020 before he was honorably discharged. in 2020 he posted this youtube video pitching himself as a real estate agent in the houston area
6:34 am
claiming that his military experience would help. >> i learned the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously dotting is and crossing ts to make sure things go off without a hitch. i've applied them to my career as a real estate agent. what sets me apart from other agents is my ability to be able to one, be a fierce negotiator. >> well, court records show he was having big money problems racking up tens of thousands of dollars in debt after a failed real estate career and married twice. during his divorce filings he mentioned he could not keep up with his house payments anymore and child support. 2020 a texas judge granted his second wife a temporary restraining order against him requiring him to stay far away from making threats or causing any physical harm to her or their children. authorities also revealed that he rented the truck he used in the attack here in houston. i was able to speak to the truck
6:35 am
owner on the phone and confirmed to us he used the truro app that doesn't require you to meet face-to-face. there is a mosque down the road one minute away from here. the community leaders have told everyone there not to speak to the media telling them to stay united. we continue to learn more about the suspect and keep everyone updated on the very latest. >> molly: right on the ground as investigators look for answers and potentially any other suspects in this case. thank you. >> rich: let's bring if retired f.b.i. agent bobby chicone. >> president biden: mere hours before the attack he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis expressing a desire to kill, a desire to kill. the isis flag was found in his
6:36 am
vehicle, which he rented to conduct this attack. possible explosives were found in the vehicle as well. and more explosives were found nearby. >> rich: does that sound to you like someone who was just inspired by isis or actually received help from what's left of the organization? >> well, my personal belief thanks for having me, rich, it is inspired by isis. i'm not sure he received any actual assistance from isis. he may have. certainly they are looking hard into that. the worldwide situation with isis is they are really busy trying to take over syria. that's their focus right now. in fact, two weeks ago i think on december 19th centcom had a precision air strike against a leader in syria and killed two operatives from isis. this individual may have known that and this may be the last straw. you mentioned earlier in your reporting the marital and financial problem. everything was mounting up on
6:37 am
him. he is already radicalizing with isis sympathies and then this air strike takes out two operatives of isis less than two weeks ago. i don't know if that incident had anything to do with him flipping over that line but certainly he was -- by the way, releasing that video hours before is a very isis trademark. they normally do a video from the person doing the suicide mission and then it's either released right after or just before the mission. a common isis tactic. they actually tell people when they are trying to online radicalization materials out there to do that to say make sure you claim isis sympathies when you do this. make a video and release it. all of this has the hallmarks of online radicalization being pushed by -- isis was a very sophisticated organization. they make videos and know how to radicalize people online and know what to put out and it is
6:38 am
phishing if somebody will take the hook in the right lifestyle situation, down on their luck, marital problem, financially. the perfect individual that would be subject to that kind of online radicalization. >> rich: how does federal law enforcement even begin to combat that? >> yeah, that's a tough question. that's the million dollar question, rich. that's the issue. you don't know who these people are, you know, everybody has problems and everybody -- marital and financial problems. none of these are very unique. it is hard to spot people that might be going down that radicalization road. you can monitor the dark web and monitor some of the isis materials. you have to do it on their end. you can't monitor every american that's having financial or marital problems. it is unconstitutional first of all but you can monitor the isis material and who is consuming it. again, that's a very hard job. a lot to do with that on the
6:39 am
internet. so that's how you probably can get to that by watching their materials and who is consuming them. >> rich: bobby, do you see any relation between what happened in new orleans and the tesla explosion at the trump hotel in las vegas? >> other than, you know, it is odd they both were rented through the same app. other than that i really don't. i think they're mirror opposite types of attacks. in new orleans you had somebody hell bent on a body count. he wanted to kill as many people as possible. he drove down mowing down people until he couldn't drive anymore and hopped out with a gun and started shooting. in las vegas, he parked in a place that wasn't very populated. on the videos of that massive explosion you don't see anybody else there. he had a truck that was going to send the force up and not out. the windows of that hotel just feet away weren't even shattered. so if he wanted to kill people in las vegas, he would have taken that truck somewhere else.
6:40 am
there are plenty of places in vegas to take that truck outside another hotel where people are queuing up for a show. so they are mirror opposite intentions to these attacks. that's what makes me think they may not be connected. >> rich: he could have driven the truck three blocks away and on las vegas boulevard. appreciate it. thank you for being with us. >> molly: republican lawmakers are demanding transparency from the intelligence community. what they want to see from the administration coming up. >> let me just say that this act of pure evil as president trump said is right. a vicious attack on innocent americans celebrating ne year's. everyone involved needs to be brought swiftly to justice. you've talked to her till you were blue in the face. you've talked about parenting tips... ...college prep...

>> molly: louisiana officials are searching for anyone else who may have had knowledge about yesterday's brutal attack. two of the states's law makesers are demanding transparency. >> i don't want to hear from anybody in the federal government that they don't have the resources. i want to give them a reasonable period of time but they need to saddle up and ride. we need to find out what happened here and it's not going to be covered up. >> i think what people want are candid answers. you don't need a sugar coat this. if there is some uncomfortable things we find along the way let's get that information out. all these agencies need to be not just on high alert but candid with the public about what they find. >> molly: mike lawlor is here to weigh in. thank you for being here. your reaction to all of this. what do you want to see and know as the investigation goes
6:47 am
forward? >> well, obviously we want to know exactly what happened, why, and who else was involved in it. there has already been some reporting that there are other people potentially involved in the terrorist attack found in new orleans. and certainly what happened in las vegas outside of the trump casino and hotel to determine a, what happened there and if there are any ties between the two events. so i think the f.b.i. needs to be as transparent as possible as quickly as possible. we are obviously just a few weeks away from president trump being inaugurated. you will have tens of thousands of people down in washington for the inauguration. public safety has to be the top priority of everyone involved, including the f.b.i.
6:48 am
>> molly: sugar bowl tonight as well. louisiana senator kennedy was grieving and rather furious yesterday and had this to say. i want to get your take. >> here is what i want to ask from the federal government. catch these people. catch these people. and then tell the american people the truth when it is appropriate and this investigation is complete, you will find out what happened and who was responsible or i will raise fresh hell. >> molly: are you concerned that americans won't get the truth to some level? and i'm wondering where his frustration is coming from? from other investigations where we haven't received a lot of answers like the assassination on donald trump for instance? >> well, i think obviously under this administration at times information has been lacking. what they've allowed to happen at our southern border where you have had folks on the terror
6:49 am
watch list able to cross into the united states, where you have seen criminal gangs come into the united states. obviously there is question about the assailant here crossing the southern border. we'll obviously learn more as the investigation unfolds. but i think what is critically important here is for the f.b.i. to do their jobs, to gather all of the information, and let the american people and especially congress know exactly what happened and why. we have to be on high alert. we are in the most precarious place since world war ii around the globe. the catastrophe that joe biden and kamala harris are leaving at donald trump's doorstep as he takes office is a disaster. you have global conflicts all over the world. obviously with what we saw in
