there has to be a mutual response here. new orleans has a lot of resources but not enough resources. the f.b.i. has a lot of resources, a.t.f. because of the presence of i.e.d.s will be involved. u.s. secret service is some of the best digital forensic experts in the law enforcement world and shoulder to charlet. all these video cameras sounds like an easy thing to do to get video. they all use different drivers and takes different software. the secret service can put people together. we went through frame by frame thousands of hours of video and now you can do it with a.i. that whole team has to be working together to do what the governor says, keep the city safe while they are investigating. >> rich: thank you for joining us this morning. appreciate it. >> thank you. >> it may be this is a lone

wolf. we don't have final confirmation on that. as a community of law enforcement we'll continue to be looking for other actors if there are. >> we're trusting that partnership between the federal and state authorities will bring us the answers we need. >> the only way to protect people from evil is to crush it. >> molly: a night of celebration turns into terrorism and tragedy. the search for answers is on into the attack that killed at least 15 people and injured dozens of others in new orleans on new year's eve. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom." >> rich: law enforcement are looking into the ramming on bourbon street. the suspect was hell bent as killing as many people as possible. >> molly: federal agents are searching the suspect's home in houston. >> rich: a tesla cyber truck

exploded at a trump hotel in las vegas. the question here whether the blast is connected to the attack in new orleans. >> molly: we have fox team coverage. retired inspector paul mauro is standing by. first ted williams is live in new orleans with the latest. ted, thank you so much for being here with us and thank you for being on the ground there. what are you learning from being where you are and seeing this investigation firsthand? >> hi molly and rich. i can tell you the things that we're learning right now is i had an interview with the chief of police this morning. i don't know -- i don't think they're sure whether this person acted as a lone wolf or he had accomplices. they did, in fact, have individuals that they believe was in their sight, meaning law enforcement. they interviewed those
7:03 am
individuals and have let those individuals go. so the search is still on as to whether there is an actual manhunt going on here in the new orleans area at this time. >> molly: ted, when you talk about individuals let go, they also talked about a range of suspects in the course of this investigation. do you feel like they are leaning one way or the other? the range of suspects, could it mean people that may have offered something to the subject in this case unwittingly that he ultimately used as part of the attack? >> you know, molly, it could be any of the above that you just mentioned. or it could be individuals who came in contact with the suspect and quite naturally they want to talk to those individuals. it also could be individuals who are actually involved. we do know that this individual had isis leanings and when you
7:04 am
look at that, that means president biden spoke about it, he was isis inspired. you could be isis directed. we believe that this man was actually isis inspired. >> rich: how difficult that you have the investigation in new orleans and now in houston and across a couple of states and maybe more? >> law enforcement has to be able to walk and chew gum. the mere fact that he is from the houston area, you would expect, as they are, that they are conducting an investigation there in the the houston, texas area to try to determine what involvement others may have had with him. he had to, rich, come down from texas and would have come down probably the i-ten corridor

coming into new orleans. so you have ten meter readers there from cameras that would have picked him up and it would show if any other individuals were actually with him at the time that he came into new orleans. >> rich: ted williams former d.c. homicide detective. thank you for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> the terrorist is going to be hell bent no matter what to create carnage and to destroy. but we as a city and as a law enforcement community have already proven over time that we can handle and manage these large crowds. we're using heavier equipment. not just patrol cars. we'll use heavier equipment to harden the targets. >> molly: deadly terror attack raising questions about gaps in security in new orleans. the city is taking no chances as it ramps up protective measures

ahead of the sugar bowl today. it comes after the state of louisiana delayed the game from yesterday. a little postponement. let's bring in paul mauro, retired nypd inspector. thank you for being with us today and yesterday as well. i want to get your thoughts. the sugar bowl about to get underway. they say there could be suspects. what is your feeling right now? >> i agree with the governor's call to run the event. there was some talk they were going to postpone it longer. you have to live your lives. he is scrambling, members of the national guard. he will put out 100 extra bodies, military police. wouldn't be surprised if there were more. shipping in deputies from around louisiana. people that live there and across louisiana their home state has been attacked. i'm hearing they are all stepping up and want to help secure the event. important event for the city and state. so frankly if i lived near that area i would go because you have to do this kind of thing.
7:07 am
that said, what new orleans definitely needs to do i would argue is a couple of things. look very hard at the protocols that were defeated here just as nypd learned a lot the hard way post 9/11. we should be sharing all that stuff. you would have hoped it was going on before the event learning how to secure episcopal will i in regard to let's say a vehicle-born attack like this. we've been seeing them around the world. they have to get the communications together a little bit. the press conference is not what you want to get. one person talking to us and one person updating us. i feel like at this point even if the information is thin, we've learned with these kinds of events getting somebody to say the immediate danger has subsided. we've interviewed people and now into the digital phase of this and looking for other people but it takes time. we need to hear that kind of thing. >> molly: they were talking about a range of suspects and
7:08 am
talking about potential ieds in the surrounding area. we're 24 hours later and they are looking at the suspect's home and getting into this. do you get the sense when we talk about other suspects it could be people who were just had interactions with this man, supplied him with something not knowing what his plans were or in the case of brothers after the boston marathon they had friends take some evidence and leave with it. is there a concern about that in the aftermath of the attack, like minded individuals? >> what happens, the boston event. people who couldn't believe that the man would have done what he did. they feel like they were protecting him. they got arrested themselves. you could have people just in denial about what occurred here. remember, there were two device, this is hard information. two devices found off the set away from bourbon street where he did what he did. as a result one of two things
7:09 am
has to be true. either jabbar planted those two and went to do what he did. which means he expected to get away and had them stashed for use later if and when he needed them. we've seen that tactic before. or he had somebody with him, as you are saying, who did that while he was doing the bourbon street attack. if it's the latter, they would be further down range on it already. i'm starting to lean towards the former. that's speculation. now the whole thing seems to have shifted to houston they're more in cleanup mode and did anybody know about it beforehand, somebody from a local mosque that he attended or somebody just in the neighborhood, relative. you know they are going very hard at his digital footprint. phones, computer, financials. all that kind of stuff as well as doing the interviews. >> molly: i wonder about those devices planted if they were meant to hit the first responders coming into that event. >> as a diversion, yeah. >> molly: thanks for being here.

well as the house homeland security committee with the call of the f.b.i. as well as the louisiana delegations from both chambers. there are a ton of questions. i've been talking with some members this morning and they have a lot to ask of the f.b.i. we're told they will be briefed by the assistant director of the f.b.i.'s counter terrorism division, that is david scott. and members want to know foremost on the ground more about the massive security concerns particularly about the breakers that weren't functioning at the time and allowed the suspect to drive onto the sidewalk and bourbon street. more widely speaking here, they want to know if it is connected to isis, are there other people involved? is there a risk for more attacks? the number one question, though, they are hoping to get answered is did the f.b.i. know anything about this guy? were they tracking him? or did me miss this completely?
7:21 am
>> we all know for the last four years the biden administration has been completely derelict in its duty. congressional republicans, here in the house and senate have repeatedly asked dhs under the biden administration about the correlation and obvious concern about terrorism and the wide open border. the idea dangerous people were coming in droves and sitting up potential terrorist cells around the country. we've been ringing the alarms. >> this is a transitional time for capitol hill, molly. so it is -- lawmakers are trying to get work done at the same time as electing a new house speaker as early as tomorrow. over in the senate, though, senator josh hawley is calling on alejandro mayorkas, homeland security secretary, and the f.b.i. director chris wray to come to capitol hill. >> molly: senator kennedy demanding answers and truth for
7:22 am
the american people. interesting days ahead. >> rich: the f.b.i. is facing criticism over its response to the terror attack in new orleans. t the -- this is the latest example of the f.b.i.'s habitual woke incoherence. andy is here now. thank you for joining us. why not call it terrorism right off the bat? they found an isis flag in the guy's car. >> rich, that makes too much sense. you will never make it at the f.b.i. look, this has been going on sadly for decades now. basically they've drawn this line in order to keep ideology in a black box. so unless they instantly come up with information that ties somebody operationally to a known notorious terrorist organization, they take the position it is not terrorism.
7:23 am
and the reason for that is they don't want to be perceived as drawing a link between islamic doctrine and violence. so i think they go out of their way to try to resist that conclusion, even though in this case you can see it was a common sense conclusion. >> rich: don't you think part of this could be overly cautious government speak? whether it's a terrorist attack or briefing on the most mundane thing to the press, government spokes people will talk forever and say absolutely nothing. >> well, there is a lot of that that goes on but very selective where they take that approach. for example, for the first two years or so of the first trump administration, they actually went out of their way to suggest that the sitting president of the united states was a clandestine agent of russia even though they didn't have any evidence for that proposition. here you have a situation where
7:24 am
they have a mountain of evidence that is staring them right in their faces and they basically go out of their way to say that what is not. >> it was only a few months ago that christopher wray testified in front of congress and talked about the extremist threat to the united states. do you think there is a disconnect between the f.b.i. director and what's happening in some of these field offices? >> you know, no. i think, rich, the thing is the f.b.i. is the thing that's in front of us because they are the law enforcement agency that immediately responds to this. but they are not -- they didn't come up with this on their own. they have masters in washington and they are, you know, working in a way that's consonant with the way they've been instructed. so it is not wray and it is not the agents in the field office. they are down the road from where this approach comes. it comes from the top of government. >> rich: you look at what's the
7:25 am
threat environment coming into the next administration. if this is a lone wolf or this is somebody who was radicalized, that is something this administration has dealt with. the trump administration has dealt with lone wolf attacks with radicalized people going back to administrations before then. what is the f.b.i. facing now going into the next four years? >> well, i agree with what speaker johnson said. you are dealing with a very degraded border security situation in which the incumbent administration has irresponsibly let really millions of people into the country who haven't been vetted. that can only contribute to instability and to the extent that we have a problem with jihadist ideology and that kind of radicalization. that can only make the problem much worse. so i think there is a lot of things where the f.b.i. gets
7:26 am
criticism where, you know, it is probably not merited. for example, in this country we don't have administrative detention. just because you suspect somebody you can't pick them up and detain them. you actually have to have criminal charges on them. so i'm sympathetic to them not being able to be on top of every single threat but you don't have to be reckless and let millions of people you haven't vetted into the country including many from countries that are hostile to the united states. >> rich: terror watch list, those who cross the border are up over the southern border. in this case, though, we're talking about an american citizen here. andy mccarthy, thank you for joining us, much appreciated. >> thank you. >> molly: the f.b.i. appeared to have finished searching the houston home of the new orleans terror suspect as we learn more about his plot to carry out the massacre, a cyber truck explodes outside of trump's las vegas hotel. new details on that investigation, which has now

we keep our boot on their throat which prevents them from externally planning to come after us but what that has left an opening for is people that have maybe some mental issues or subscription to fundamentalism in the islamic fate and we need to worry about that. there is so much online. tap into online isis propaganda and that's one of the biggest threats we face. >> rich: what remains of isis? >> still a viable organization overseas. especially as we see syria begin to -- it has detour orriateed as we begin to see them try to reestablish governments. the french over the weekend trying to hit isis, we tried to hit them and did a couple of weeks back. we have to stay active. i think president trump knows this, of course. he is the one that took off the obama-era self-imposed restrictions about rules of engagement in his first term and helped win the battle against

isis at that time. he will have to do more of the same here. he will make big decisions soon on our counter terrorism posture in the middle east. this is a reminder as we talk about china, ukraine, everything going on and here we are again with terrorism raising its head again. >> rich: in term one president trump had put on the table threatened to pull american troops out of syria. should that be off the table now? >> i think the bureaucracy, military, c.i.a. needs to articulate to the incoming president why they need ground troops. it is one thing. trump probably already agreed we need to have an air campaign that continues against isis. but i think they will have to be very tight in their argumentation, whatever it is, that we need the on the ground forces. it may be that's the easiest way to collect intelligence, the easiest way for us to meet with agents inside of syria and elsewhere, and if that's the case, then they need to be able to put that to the new president

to explain why we need boots on the ground. >> rich: those suspects identified thus far in both the explosion in las vegas and what happened in new orleans are both american citizens. you had mentioned the threat coming over the southern border. those who have been on the terror watch list who have come into the united states. how does the government deal with that? >> first we already know that president trump is going to have a mass deportation plan and he should. but i think we ought to give emphasis, probably priority to anyone that we know of that perhaps slipped in through the border. this is going to require enormous coordination between external national security agency, f.b.i., internally to try to identify who these people are and give it top priority to capture anyone who might fit that risk profile. >> rich: thank you for joining us. molly. >> molly: the terror attack in new orleans putting the nation's capital on edge with several

>> molly: a major new information if new orleans. fox news confirms the f.b.i. no longer believes that there are other suspects involved in the new orleans terror attack. they're still asking people to send in tips on jabbar, meantime washington is on alert with several high-profile events this month. the nation's capitol is tightening security for president carter's funeral next week as well as president trump's inauguration. a retired special agent for the secret service is here. thank you for joining us this morning. you have had an opportunity to react first to this news that it appears the suspect in this horrific vehicle ramming acted alone. your thoughts. >> yes, he probably did.
7:57 am
usually when there are others involved, there is a trail of bread crumbs that would most likely lead back to those individuals. >> molly: initially the f.b.i. special agent in charge said they were looking at a range of suspect that they initially did not believe he was solely responsible. now they've conducted a great many interviews and combed his residence, that sort of thing. why the dramatic shift? what do you think led them to believe there could be other suspects involved and now they have so much more information? >> well, i think for starters when an event like this happens, a lot of people think, especially law enforcement, want to cover all their bases and make sure they have everybody in the picture. there could be planners, people that handle logistics. you know, they mainly picked him to do one thing, to do the event. so they are always backtracking and trying to find any leads or anything that ties into that.
7:58 am
in this case, though, with this person being a former army military personnel, i tend to think he was very independent. he knew what he had to do for himself and knew how to do it. so therefore -- i also think, too, that someone like this doesn't want to involve more people because then there is a chance of leaks. >> molly: a great point. now we have the sugar bowl slated to happen tonight. can people heading to that event feel a little bit of a sense of relief there were not a great many suspect or a manhunt underway right now? >> i believe so. what you have to remember is that when an event happens like this, they solely pick one event because they know they will only get one chance. that chance fails, then just like now, everything is heightened. so therefore it reduces their chance to be successful on a second and third event.
7:59 am
if it's second and third event does happen it is most likely going to happen within minutes or hours right after the first one. so the fact that the state, local and now the federal have a chance to rebuild and make a more robust security perimeter for tonight's football game, i think that diminishes the chances of another perpetrator trying to, you know, make a large event tragic. >> molly: we are concerned about copycats in the coming weeks and months ahead. this isn't the thing. the presidential inauguration around the corner. do you have concerns about that and who can law enforcement prevent a similar attack? >> well, i can tell you from experience i've been to three inaugurations myself, bush two and the second obama. the inauguration is repeated and
