11:02 am
that is very useful for this investigation. you look at this cybertruck here, we had to transport this down to our fleet services so we could really get through this thing. i'll remind you that the subject inside wasn't able to be removed for a very long period of time because he was burnt beyond recognition, so we continue to move through this, going to talk a little bit about his identity and what we believe, but i would like to highlight a couple of things that the teams found inside of the cybertruck that are useful to the investigation, and that first and foremost is a military identification. we also found a passport. we found a desert eagle .50-caliber semiautomatic pistol. and if you will notice on a lot of these guns that we are going to talk about here, they are almost just burnt beyond recognition, as well. there is an sl model b30 semiautomatic firearm. number of fireworks that were still in the vehicle that had to
11:03 am
be removed. notably we found an iphone and a smartwatch, and then several credit cards were also in the name of our subject. our subject is 37-year-old matthew littles burger. he is of colorado springs, colorado. born july 22nd of 1987. now, as you'll see here on a picture of his driver's license, the question really still remains for me, and i know there's a lot of you folks in the media that are identifying this person as a person in our vehicle. as i mentioned to you already, his body is burnt beyond recognition, and i do still not have confirmation will hundred% that that is the individual that was inside of our vehicle, and so as i am calling it now, the subject or person of interest, i will not come back until i have the confirmation through dna or medical records that this is
11:04 am
indeed, in fact the subject inside of the vehicle. now further complicating this identification of this individual, we also discovered through the coroner's office that the individual had sustained a gunshot wound to the head prior to the detonation of the vehicle. one of the handguns was found at his feet inside of the vehicle. obviously, in how we are trying to identify him, and i am feeling comfortable to give you this information, is a tremendous amount of substantial evidence to include. he rented the vehicle. there are two tattoos, one of which is on the subject stomach and one on the arm, we can see bits and pieces of in comparisoo what we know he had on his body that is giving us a lot of confidence that this is, in fact, the same person, as well
11:05 am
as declare the obvious which is the credit cards, the military identification, the passport, and then furthermore we will see here in just a short period of time, we tracked his movements from colorado to las vegas, and in a number of the photographs that we were able to determine he was the individual that was driving the vehicle, and also i would like to iterate at this point to you, we still have only ever seen him in this vehicle and we are not aware of any other subjects involved in this particular case. now, i would like to acknowledge a couple of things because i know what's going on in the social media world and there are a number of things in this case that are similar to the attack in new orleans. we do know that our subject here served in the military. in fact, he is a current member of the military. both of the subject served at fort bragg north carolina. what we do know about that is it
11:06 am
is a very large military base and we have no record that they serve in the same unit or even the same years at fort bragg. summing that continues to remain under investigation. i also know that they both served in afghanistan in 2009. we don't have any evidence that they were in the same province in afghanistan, the same location, or the same unit. again, something else that remains under investigation. and we also know, of course, that they both use the rental company turo to rent their vehicles. as far as the military background, it has been confirmed by dod that he was, indeed, in the united states army. he was also a green beret operation sergeant who spent most of his time at fort carson, colorado, and in germany. he was on approved leave from germany where he was serving with the tenth special forces group. he was also previously in the national guard and the army reserves. i would like to point out to you
11:07 am
that through exceptional joint investigative efforts we have gotten to a place where we believe we can show you his route to las vegas from colorado. carlos will put up the map for you. we know he rented the cybertruck in denver on december 28th. we tracked his movements through the tesla charging stations to a monument colorado on december 30th. on the 31st of december, the truck was charged in trinidad colorado. las vegas, new mexico, and albuquerque and gallup, new mexico. on january 1st, the truck was charged in holbrook, flagstaff, and kingman, arizona. we last tracked the truck in kingman at 0533 yesterday morning. the truck was first spotted in las vegas at 7:29 a.m.
11:08 am
yesterday. and carlos will pull up a picture of the truck pulling onto the drive here. and that picture was observed at about 7:34 a.m. we know that he pulled into the trump valet. i believe we have a video of that. you can see the cybertruck highlighted there. so through extensive surveillance video we were able to track him leaving there and we know that he went to several different places along las vegas boulevard and he spent some time in a parking lot of a business near flamingo and las vegas boulevard. we have a video of the truck
11:09 am
pulling back onto las vegas boulevard from the sands. you see that there. goes, that is north on the boulevard from sands at 8:39, where he then immediately heads to the trump hotel, pulls into the valley area, and as of course you all know, the explosion occurs within 17 seconds of his arrival at the valet. there is some additional investigative updates that are going to be provided to you by a couple of the other speakers here. the first of which will be our special agent in charge of the fbi local office, spencer evans. spencer? >> good morning. my name is spencer evans. i'm a special agent in charge of the fbi's las vegas division. as the sheriff mentioned, we have been working through the night with our partners, the las vegas metropolitan police department and other agencies, to gather all the facts and determining motive to what was initially reported to the fbi as a bombing incident, to which our
11:10 am
special agent bomb techs and others responded. obviously we are always concerned in these sorts of events to ascertain what the motive is. we understand that is everybody's -- at the forefront of everybody's thoughts, so looking into exactly what the motivation is remains our number one priority. this is why the fbi joint terrorism task force has been brought into play people joint terrorism task force most important part of that acronym is joint. it is done in concert with our partners, which are comprised of more than a dozen investigative agencies. here throughout the state of nevada. we have been working hand in glove, side-by-side, tirelessly to determine, is there any ongoing threat to the public, to identify the subject, to determine any potential connection to other events going on in the world, most notably in new orleans, and then obviously to determine if there is anything else that we need to be tracking down. at this time, as the sheriff pointed out, we feel the subject has been identified, although not conclusively, waiting for dna evidence on that front.
11:11 am
however, we do feel like we have the subject identified, and at this time there is no information about additional subjects that the fbi is tracking on. our resources come as i mentioned, that have been deployed in support of this event include special agent bomb techs, or evidence response team which is processing crime scenee forensics folks from las vegas metropolitan police department. our investigators come our intelligence analysts, and that outside of the fbi las vegas field office we have investigative leads that are being conducted by fbi field offices, both internationally and domestically, as well. as always, when the fbi is involved with any sort of case like this, we ask for help from the public. anyone with information related to this incident, we encourage you to please call 1-800-call-fbi, or you can submit a tip online at tipstartfbi.gov. we have already received thousands of tips related to this incident.
11:12 am
the challenge we face moving forward is to separate those pertinent and relevant and those that can be verified from those that have not. for example, one of the tips we received just today relates to information alluding to this subjects personal experiences related to his time and activity in the military. again, that is unverified and uncorroborated, but one of many tips and leads that we will be following up in the days that come. if you have any additional information, again, encourage any everyone, 1-800-call-fbi or submitted online at tips.fbi.gov. we will tirelessly worked to exhaust all investigative leads and conclusively determine what the nature of this particular incident was, what the motivation was, and to the extent possible share all that information as we obtain it. i will now turn sometime over to the assistant special agent in charge from the atf, kenny cooper. >> good morning, everybody. my name is kenny cooper. i am the assistant special agent
11:13 am
in charge of atf san francisco field division. atf is bringing our expertise in post-blasts investigations and our intelligence to specifically assist in the investigation. i will tell you are special agent bomb techs are working with the fbi and with las vegas metro and sifting through that post-blasts debris to find components and investigative leads that will derive from that evidence process. we are too early into that investigation process to give any determination as far as how this device was initiated. i will say that we do know the components primarily consist of fireworks, mortars, aerial shells, and are all consumer fireworks. nothing commercial grade has been discovered at this point. and we have identified some fuel enhancers like the coleman fuel and bp racing fuel and some
11:14 am
explosive targets that can be purchased at any sporting goods store. we have also, as the sheriff mentioned, we have identified two semiautomatic handguns recovered from the tesla. we have successfully traced those firearms, and i can tell you that matthew lov livelsbergr lawfully purchased both firearms on december 30th, 2024. we have agents following up those investigative leads. we know exactly where those firearms were purchased, and we will share any developments from those leads as they come in, thank you. >> we also have the clark county fire chief here john steinbeck, and he did not have any additional updates but if there's any questions in regard to what the fire department did during this, he is here to answer those questions, as well. with that, i would just like to
11:15 am
say before i take a couple of questions from all of you, you'll notice that we are not releasing information that we haven't corroborated and verified. we are very well aware of all of the things that are going around on social media. but that's just the way we are going to conduct this investigation. we are not putting it out until we can tell you for a fact what information it is that we are putting out, so we are going to continue to do that, but i am also confident to tell the las vegas community and this great nation that we don't believe there's any further threat from the subject or anybody associated to him here in las vegas. with that, i saw you had your hand up, if you could just identify yourself, please. >> reporter: channel three las vegas. did the suspect have any other connection to las vegas? had he ever been here or any recent -- >> so the question was that the subject have any ties to las vegas or had he ever been here before? i do believe we had one instance a number of years ago where he stayed at a local hotel, but we are still trying to verify that information, as well.
11:16 am
sir? >> reporter: you have a gentleman in a cybertruck, trump hotel. there is information that the fbi was in colorado springs last night, possibly at the gentlemen's home. any information about why? >> i think i will let spencer answer that question. >> so as i mentioned, the motivation at this point is unknown. we are, as i mentioned earlier, following investigative leads both domestically and internationally, as well, so that includes search warrants and witness interviews, collecting forensic information, and basically trying to compile the facts. there is investigative activity taking place literally around the globe, trying to determine what the potential nexus is, but at this time, this particular moment in time, as the sheriff aptly said, we have to focus on what we know and what we don't know. we know we have a bombing, absolutely. and it is a bombing that
11:17 am
certainly has factors that raise concerns. it is not lost on us that it is in front of the trump building, that it is a tesla vehicle, but we don't have information at this point that definitively tells us or suggests it was because of this particular ideology or any of the reasoning behind it. that is the purpose of the investigation that we are conducting, is to get to the bottom of exactly what happened, why and how. >> sir? >> reporter: you mentioned a number of similarities between this case and one in new orleans. how far in the investigation process do you guys go to try to rule out that they are connected, knowing that you already have a couple of things that seem to connect them together? >> so the question is, how are we working to rule in or rule out any connections to the new orleans event. an answer to that is every tip and lead that comes in, every piece of evidence that comes in, we don't discount it. we work it through. it's an interesting thing, during these kinds of investigations, that if he turned out to be simply
11:18 am
similarities, very strange similarities to have, so we are not prepared to rule in or rule out anything, at this point. there is lots more for us to do in this investigation. we haven't even gotten into the phones or the computers which are usually very, very instructive and informative to us as we investigate and we've got a lot more work to do to trace him and see the stores he went to, to rule out anybody else. lots and lots of investigate of work to do it we are just try to give you an update on what we know now that is factual. >> reporter: was the gunshot wound to his head self infected? >> the question is was the gunshot self-inflicted, and we do believe it was since he was the only person in the vehicle and it occurred immediately prior to the vehicle blowing up. back there, sir? >> reporter: abc news. with the evidence you have seen so far, are you comfortable now calling this a suicide mission? >> the question is am i comfortable calling it a suicide mission. i'm comfortable calling it a
11:19 am
suicide with a bombing that occurred immediately thereafter. i'm not giving it any other labels. >> reporter: the friends and family you've spoken to so far come have a shared any prior red flags? >> the question is did we have any of the family members share any particular red flags. again, i will go back to what i know is circulating on social media, but none of that has been verified at this point. reporter matt final question, real quickly, all the components you found inside the fire cybertruck, where they all purchased in colorado? >> the question is where all of the components found inside of the cybertruck purchased in colorado? i don't know the answer to that. that is part of why we are doing the extensive part of the investigation peered. >> reporter: associated press. can you talk a little bit about the security measures you have in place at the hotel now? >> so as you all know, we just successfully completed a new year's eve event where hundreds of thousands of people come to las vegas. i've extended our posture, just like it is for a new year's eve
11:20 am
event, we have thousands of police officers that are working day in and day out. obviously dozens and dozens of people working on this investigation, as well. we will continue to look at what that secured he posture looks like but i'm confident in the safety of our community as we move forward. go ahead. >> reporter: las vegas abc. did livelsberger have any sort of criminal record at all? also where the vehicle was rented? >> the question was is there any criminal record, none that i'm aware of. that has not been brought to my attention that he had a criminal record. and i said that the cybertruck was rented on december 28th in denver, colorado. >> reporter: stephanie perez, fox news. >> hi. >> reporter: hi. have you verified he checked into the hotel? >> the question is, did we know he checked into the resorts world the day before this. i'm not aware of that information. sera? >> reporter: fox 5 vegas.
11:21 am
you mentioned increased security presence at trump international. with that extent further along the strip or just there and how long do you anticipate that? >> the question is generally about the secured he posture and that is entirely our entire community, not only fremont street and the strip but surrounding neighborhoods, as well. just to make sure we have the community feeling that level of safety they need to feel after an event like this. >> reporter: las vegas newsroom. how are you able to use the charging stations to track the car? >> the question is how are we able to use the tracking -- the charging stations to track the vehicle all the way through. and i'm not exactly sure how to answer that question just yet. i know that there is some capability by being able to determine that the car is connected to the charger. one of the things that we are looking for is anybody that may have been at the charging location at the same time. we are looking to try to identify them because their vehicles would have also had
11:22 am
cameras that would have taped anybody in and around then. we are trying to get people that may have been in the same locations at the same time that have video on their vehicle that can provide that video to us, as well. i will take two more. go ahead. >> reporter: can you talk about the damage detained by the cybertruck itself and whether he was aiming to hurt others or a public suicide? >> yeah, the question is about the cybertruck and the lack of damage to the cybertruck in containing the explosion. carlos, if you can put that truck back up there, that might be helpful. you know, you'll see, if you look on the outside of that vehicle, it's hard to tell from that photograph, but other than the windows being gone, that's a bit more disassembled than it was at the scene, and the back area being blown off, there is no evidence of physical damage to the sides of that vehicle, so the explosion that was in that
11:23 am
vehicle sort of vented out and up, but it didn't even damage the glass doors at the trump, so i'm not sure what that means. i also know there is a number of unexploded pieces of the things he had inside that vehicle. i just don't think it was done as well as he was expecting it to be done, but go ahead. >> reporter: i was wondering, were you able to recover the video from the cybertruck or was it destroyed? >> so the question is are we able to recover the video from the cybertruck, and many of you may know that those cybertruck's contain a tremendous number of cameras. again, mr. musk has sent out a number of his folks that will be arriving here this afternoon with the intent to try to capture part of that captured all of the video from inside of the truck. sir? >> reporter: you mentioned a number of components in the back of the truck that did not go off. may be a question for atf but when it comes -- i think we mostly think of a bomb as
11:24 am
connected. this seems like individual incendiary put together. can you speak to how you think this is a bomb or was it just several pieces of things that might have exploded and gone off at the same time? >> yeah, i'll tell you, it does appear that it was... i just want to be careful with my language here, but the level of sophistication is not what we would expect from an individual with this type of military experience. most of the materials inside the tesla were fuel, to help fuel a greater explosion. but it's too early to answer any questions, as if there was sophisticated connectivity to those components to make it ignite in the way that it did. speak all right, there was one last hand over there, last
11:25 am
question. >> reporter: special agent evans, any idea if the suspect has been in contact with any outside air terrorist groups or has this investigation been global? >> the question is do we know whether the subject has been in touch with any outside terrorist groups or if it has been investigated globally. spencer? >> so, yeah, the question about whether it is being investigated globally, absolutely. like i said, we are running down investigative leads around the world. no information that we are aware of right now that connects this individual to any terrorist organization around the world, but that is obviously the thrust of the investigation, is ruling out that there is any sort of terrorism nexus, and again getting what the ideology is. >> we appreciate you all coming, and we will be back before you when there are substantial updates to provide to you. thanks for all of your great work. >> sandra: all right, police chief kevin mcmahill of the
11:26 am
las vegas police department giving a lot of new information on this cybertruck explosion that happened outside the trump tower there. just a couple hours from when the new orleans incident occurred. they are not ruling a lot out detailing at this time that they are still really in the center of this investigation, but a lot of details coming from this, including the special forces master sergeant matthew live livelsberger, being shared by the police, detailing what they believe is a suicide. he said he was comfortable describing this as a suicide with a bombing that occurred immediately thereafter. so he shot himself before his rented cybertruck blew up. bill, the body was burnt beyond recognition, so he said now they are leaning on a military i.d., credit cards, passport, some tattoos that were found on the body that would match that person but he said we don't have
11:27 am
100% confirmation. this is the individual until they have a match of dna and medical records. also really important to point out the news that elon musk is sending a team to help recover the video footage from all of the cameras in the cybertruck. >> bill: that was a very clear, concise, and transparent press conference by las vegas. they should all sorts of evidence come his bird passport, his purge military i.d., different camera angles of the cybertruck going down the street in vegas and pulling into the valet area of the trump hotel, then pulling out again. being very transparent with what they've got. they acknowledged there is a lot of rumors swirling around on online, certainly a bunch of similarities between this case in the case in new orleans but the fbi in both locations right now saying they cannot tie either of those events to each other with any direct evidence, another thing that was interesting, but two guns they recovered, they said he bought them legally just on monday night, sandra, they didn't say
11:28 am
where he bought those but both of those handguns bought legally on monday, just a few days ago. >> sandra: also they said they do not believe there any other subjects involved in this case, and they don't believe there is any further threat from this incident, at this time, but the investigation is ongoing. let's bring in scott sweetow, former atf deputy assistant director joining us right now. scott, thank you very much. what did you make of what you just heard there? >> so super interesting presser that they had. both the information put out by the fbi is the information put out by atf. i think what is significant in this is not only that it was apparently a suicide attack and that it wasn't seemingly an accidental ignition prior to this service member being able to drive the vehicle into the trump hotel, so the fact it was a suicide attack i think is very significant. the other thing i thought was
11:29 am
very interesting is you would expect that somebody who was a green beret, and i served in a combat military occupation myself are a number of years, would have the training to put together a fairly sophisticated device. these appear to be just consumer-great fireworks, so the kind of thing you and i could buy from the store. they have less than 50 milligrams of flash powder in them, and although they may look like the bigger brothers that are used in fireworks displays all over the country, they are not, so if he thought that by using gasoline and other types of fuels that he could get a mass detonation, fortunately that is not what happened, because otherwise this could have been much worse. >> sandra: no details on emotive, though. yeah, like many people watching your show, and i have been doing a lot of commentary about this for the last two days, really
11:30 am
everybody wants to know if there is a connection, certainly because the same app was used to rent the vehicles, both electrics, both happened that kind of iconic locations, both in the military, both served in afghanistan, a reasonable person could conclude that there was a connection, but really this needs to play out, and investigators need to do their thing, dump the electronics, look at the social media, and see if these guys knew each other. and if there could have been unfortunately some kind of radicalization of this green beret, which would just be unbelievably tragic, as well. >> sandra: he went on to say they understand the similarities and the coincidences. obviously, what is being shared on social media, we have all seen it, the speculation that has run rampant, but other than they both went to fort bragg, one is currently -- he's obviously currently serving, according to the military i.d.,
11:31 am
he said that is a big place. there is no record they were in the same unit or the same years, but they did both served in afghanistan, so they are still investigating. what does this look like as far as a time frame? fascinating to think they have found all of these things but his body was burned so far beyond recognition that they still have to confirm that this is the guy. >> yeah, i mean, the u.s. military maintains dna samples of service members. it's used for a very, very specific and limited purpose. my understanding is it is really strictly tied to body identification. so they may be able to get the u.s. army to be able to cooperate and match him via dna, to make it absolutely conc conclusive. certainly if he shot himself with either of those, one a desert eagle, a massive
11:32 am
cartridge, the other appears to be an ar pistol, that is going to really do a number on him, as well, so it is going to be difficult to do this, certainly through dental records, the military keeps very, very detailed dental records. they will be able to identify him and they may have already done so, they're just not prepared to say it. >> sandra: okay come appreciate you sticking with us through that news conference, thank you. >> thank you, sandra. >> the first responders, they were everywhere last night, hats off to 'em, the job that these people have, and go down bourbon street and see the carnage that they had to see. >> bill: some big-time courage under fire. coming up, a stunning look at how quickly fi first responderso the attack. also ted williams is live on the scene.

11:37 am
>> they engage this terrorist in a gunfight. they stopped him six blocks in. and proud of them. i'm grateful for them. and i'm proud to be in new orleans police officer. >> bill: so that right there is new orleans police superintendent anne kirkpatrick, toting the bravery of her officers. she has reason to do so because video has surged of them rushing toward the gunfire to take down a terrorist suspect. two of her officers were hurt in the shoot-out, both now recovering in a hospital. ted williams, fox news contributor and former d.c. homicide detective is joining us live at the seat in new orleans right now. ted, great to see you. things for your time down there. first question i have for you, we just heard they are reopening some streets down there. authorities telling folks the safe, come on out. other people coming back out and do they feel safe? >> bill, i think they're coming out in droves. there is a difference between night and day from when i got here a few nights ago and how
11:38 am
people i believe are walking around like zombies, and what we see today are individuals who are attending the sugar bowl here, or you've got the notre dame people and you've got the dawgs as they say from georgia. the town is alive again and i think it is all because of the press conference that was held earlier this afternoon, where so much information was given to the public to make them feel confident. >> bill: so this terrorist who had pledged allegiance to isis, he obviously didn't just plan on running people over, he got out of that car and he started shooting. he wanted to take more lives, and the local cops out there heard that gunfire and ran right towards it. they took him down, and a few of them got hurt in the process. you are a cop. just take us inside what that moment is like. these officers hear the gunshots, the adrenaline starts
11:39 am
pumping, and they run right towards it. >> you know, bill, i can tell you, having been a homicide detective and a police officer, federal agent, and now lawyer, i have been in several different shoot-outs, and i can tell you, it's not like you see on television or john wayne. the adrenaline starts, just shoot through your body, and i imagine that happened with these officers. these officers ran toward danger and they did and excellent job. >> bill: and they likely saved a whole lot more lives in the process, you see that video right there, as soon as the gunshots go off, not a single one stays behind, they go running towards it. we are think will to the officers. thank you, ted, for your services as an officer, as well. sandra? >> sandra: all right, bill. ted, thank you very much. let's bring in tom homan now, the incoming trump administration border czar. tom, great to have you here. i want to get to new orleans again in just a second, but we
11:40 am
just got this fresh information out of las vegas, and the police chief they are giving us a lot of new details. i want to get your reaction to. he characterized what they're learning on the ground in las vegas as a suicide with a bombing that occurred immediately thereafter. they are not aware of any other subjects involved in that case. while they are aware of the similarities to the person who carried out the attack in new orleans, they are not able to directly tie these two events together. they have no evidence they are tied together, but they do not believe any further threat from that particular incident is out there at this time. what was your reaction to what you heard? >> well, i think, the further the investigation goes, i think they're going to find a connection between the two incidents, but look, they are both suicide events. the man in new orleans certainly had no plans of going home after getting out and trading gunfire
11:41 am
with law enforcement. i think both of these guys realized they weren't going home after this event. but the threats aren't over. i've done this work for four years, talking about the threat. we have a record number of known gotaways. over 2 million people entered this country. we don't know who they are or where they came from or what their purpose to come into this country. they weren't vetted. they weren't screened. they weren't finger printed. we don't know who they are. since the border patrol and cbp arrested well over 300 people on the terrorist watch list. how many of that 2.2 million who escaped apprehension, escaped vetting, escaped fingerprinting, came into sponsor terror. christopher wray said under testimony numerous times in front of congress, this is the biggest national security vulnerability he has seen. i agree with him. we are not out of the woods. this country is in grave danger. we need to secure the border. despite what has happened the last two days, in las vegas and
11:42 am
