cooler and that is significant because the fbi says there were two coolers in which ieds, improvised explosive devices were left. they include digital tip line and want to hear if you have any information. the number of victim fatalities are holding at 14. while 37 are injured. new year's festivities in full swing, jabbar turned truck and plowed into the crowd on bourbon street. every indication he wanted to kill more people evidenced by two homemade bombs or ieds left in coolers. anne kirkpatrick he was hell-bent on creating the damage that he did. jabbar posted videos online and said he initially wanted to target his family. he was concerned that the media attention would not focus on the war between believers and disbelievers, indicates of his radicalized fate. on the back of answer the ared truck he flew the flag of isis and said that is what inspired him. >> what i can tell you right now is that he was 100 percent inspired by isis.
4:03 pm
and so we are digging through more than social media, more interviews, working with some of our other partners to ascertain just how to ascertain a little bit more about that connection. >> jabbar served 13 years in the army. he deployed to afghanistan with the 82nd air information technology specialist. that's what he got the medal for. he had problems in civilian life. he had a couple of divorces. one got so ugly there was a restraining order preventing him from sending or threatening profane messages to his wife and from causing injury. jabbar was shot dead here on bourbon street. can you hear with all the noise in the background the bourbon street is coming back to life there are many similarities between the attack here and bourbon street and the attack or explosion in the cyber truck in vegas. including the fact that both individuals involved served in the 82nd airborne at what used to be called fort bragg. they used the same app. to rent

their vehicles. but beyond that the fbi says there really isn't any hard evidence connecting the two. charlie? >> charlie: great reporting as always, mike. couple questions. there is some speculation after the facts with the photos of the truck in new orleans that the isis flag was somehow sort of concealed. was there some reason for that or was that -- is that misreporting? >> you know, that kind of information just hasn't been released to this extent. i have seen. so after photos with that isis flag laying on the ground. so i think that will come out in subsequent days. >> charlie: and tell us what -- obviously there is still a lot going on in new orleans right now. it's a time of year a lot of people are there. do authorities feel like the city is fairly secure at the moment? >> well, there is a lot of security at either end of bourbon street can you see a lot of barriers. some that are preinstalled that
4:05 pm
are now up. the police aren't really letting any vehicles come up bourbon street as they usually don't anyway when bourbon street gets crowded on some of the surrounding streets, there is a lot of police presence. a lot of roads blocked off at this point and a lot of caution. >> charlie: great reporting, mike, thanks. joining us now is jonathan gilliam, former fbi special agent bret sadler, senior fellow at the heritage foundation, former pentagon official and charles marino former dhs senior adviser. it's kind of amazing to watch all of this and watch the reaction from the officials after they -- the fact. it does seem like authorities were completely caught off guard here and unprepared for this. i think complacency is the word that just as shocking to watch these people walk down the same road that this happened last
4:06 pm
night. and not even give it a -- two nights ago. not even give it a second thought. to say me, that's very alarming. but, i think you're hitting on something here is that law enforcement and city officials around the country have failed to evolve as the attackers evolve their tactics. these truck attacks have been talked about and used by isis since 2010 when they wrote an article about how efficient they are. i think -- and it's one of the easiest things to guard against. and i think what we saw in the press conference there in new orleans, is a sign of the incompetence. and i'm not trying to insult them. but from a way of they just don't progress in law enforcement and in these cities to really think outside the box and do things that maybe a way that they didn't do them before. because i will tell you this right now, charlie, we may be

talking about trucks today. but this right here, a $400 drone, this is the next flavor to come. this is being used all over ukraine in the middle east, costs about $400. they can put an explosive on that and i can guarantee you these city officials are not even considering this at this time. >> charlie: so, charles, jonathan brought up important thing that struck me as well watching the press conference where the fbi rolled out the possibility this is a terrorist attack. listen to this and i want to get your reaction. >> he posted several videos to an online platform proclaiming his support for isis. in the first video jabar explains he originally planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote: war between the believers and the disbelievers, end quote. >> charlie: so, of course, i was thinking about the clip from the
4:08 pm
previous day where the fbi ruled out the possibility that it was terrorism. but, of course now they have come to realize in fact, it was terrorism. >> yeah, that should have never been said. it was a big mistake. i think you see that reflected by the fbi when they sent down the deputy assistant director from counter-terrorism to take over the briefings. because the public is not going to have confidence in that official that briefed on this. [sirens] >> to jonathan's point about the threat level in the country, city, municipalities, need to start their security planning to match the threat level and the specific threats that are out there. we know vehicles are one method of attacks that these terrorist groups that they prefer lone actors carry out mass casualty using drones are going to be the next revolution. we have already seen this starting. i think here in the united states we are behind the curve
4:09 pm
as the fbi is somewhat transparent during a fast moving ongoing investigation, you are hearing all these briefings are coming with caveats, that, you know, at this moment, this is the information we have. we got to remember las vegas they haven't even finished the search warrants on the electronic devices of this subject. so i don't think it can be conclusively they reached a decision whether or not there's a connection between these two subjects. >> charlie: you know, brent, one of the things that makes this so hard to understand and some level more terrifying is the fact that this guy jabbar was born here. and grew up here. and then became radicalized. that to me seems like a much more difficult, nearly insurmountable problem to deal with. >> well, anyone can be radicalized, given the right circumstances and surroundings,

4:11 pm
order to do it, i have a problem with that -- those executives in that city. the reality is, you know, the nypd does this great every day they use police cars, buses, dump trucks with sand in it, whatever it takes to secure that area. it doesn't take millions of dollars, it just takes ingenuity. and you know look at this way, charlie, very level playing level that everybody can understand. i remember the game rock, paper, scissors that we play as kids. well, if you could take rock out, for instance, and you say okay, let's eliminate rock. we figured out that's one of the possibilities, let's remove it. worry about paper and scissors. mitigate those circumstances. that's the way a threat assessment works. if you can eliminate one possible attack, then you can mitigate the other ones if you can't eliminate those as well. and, in this case, there was none of it.

>> charlie: charles, this was joe biden three and a half years ago down playing isis. watch this. >> according to the intelligence community, terrorism from white supremacy is the most lethal threat to the homeland today, not isis, not al-qaeda, white supremacists. [applause] that's not me. that's the intelligence community. >> charlie: do you think that this kind of focus on white supremacy, you know, kept distracted us from finding what is betwe distracting us from fig the threat? >> not only is keeping the eye off the main thing the main thing. i have got to tell you something, he has implemented policies that have set this country back decades from the homeland security standpoint. he has undercut our overall
4:13 pm
national security like no president in history. he has undermined law enforcement. he has undermined every first responder in this country and made their jobs 100 times harder than it needs to be. he has taken his foot off the gas against isis. and that was demonstrated on new years' day when this attack was carried out. the fbi refocused their mission after september 11th towards terrorism. and that's what they need to be focused on, eve and every day. it is unacceptable that somebody like this individual is posting these things, this rhetoric on social media and still the bureau claims they are undetected and that they had no idea that this person portrayed a threat to the country. it can't happen anymore. >> charlie: before we go, brent, what are your thoughts on biden's handling of national security? >> atrocious.
4:14 pm
it's the simplest way to describe it. and to explain a lot of the things you are seeing. you know, life returning to normal so quick and not a visible police presence as was noted earlier. this is a lack of leadership that's really resulting in all of these atrocities and disasters. starting from afghanistan debacle, evacuation, to the porous borders and the millions of people come in that we have no idea who they are. many thousands of them, known felonies and rapists and murderers that is a complete lack of leadership feckless leadership at best. out of the biden white house. and the sooner we get to januar. i think the safer we are all be. >> hey, charlie, can i say one thing. >> very true. the entire time i was in the fbi. i never saw one white supremacy case that didn't include prison. that wasn't in the prison. not one. this is all created masquerade by the biden administration and activist to make it look like

narrow time frame before they can act before real leadership comes back to the white house. unfortunately we're seeing the consequences of that in realtime. you know, biden's parting gift to the united states seems to have been drawing a massive bullseye on the entire country as he has signaled he's incapable of standing up for our sovereignty, our safety, and our enemies know that and the american people are unfortunately discovering that the hard way. >> you know, ari, among republicans on capitol hill, you know, obviously talking about an historically slim majority as they try to come together but speaker johnson feels pretty confident that he's going to be able to get the votes needed to be speaker. watch what he told larry cudlow earlier. >> i think it's going to be okay, larry. we'll have maybe one no vote, i think. i think we get it done on the first round. certainly hopeful for that. as we noted, we have to stick together. >> charlie: do you share his confidence? >> no.

no, because we all seen this before. i hope that speaker johnson is right. the problem is whoever they elect if not speaker johnson, the last speaker is speaker next and do it to the next guy and next guy. there is no end to this. whoever has to be the adult in the room to bring the parties together and inevitable compromise. that's what happens with the small majority like republicans have. until they start acting like a unified team, republicans will always be in trouble. speaker johnson i hope he survives. if he doesn't, it's a blow to everybody who wants to get something done to support president trump. >> charlie: do you feel confident that president trump will be able to rally republicans in the house around getting something done so that republicans can start to address their agenda? >> i certainly hope so. again, republicans owe it to the american people in this case to re-elect mike johnson. it's the greatest way to ensure
