orleans. the f.b.i. releasing new photos showing him one hour before the terror attack and we're also getting a look inside his home. good morning, everyone. i'm sandra smith and bill, great to start the day with you. bill and dana are off today. >> bill: i'm bill melugin. this is "america's newsroom." they said jabbar was 100% inspired by isis. his half brother claims his radicalization for the attack. a glimpse into more of his upbringing and a new look what's inside of that suspect's trailor in houston. team fox coverage. brooke tailor is covering the investigation in texas but first to new orleans where garrett tenney is standing by live. good morning, garrett. >> good morning to you. fox news learned in the wake of this attack the f.b.i. and dhs have issued a warning to police across the country to be on the

lookout for the potential of copycat attacks. to be clear, this is really fairly typical after events such as this one and we are told that this specific bulletin doesn't include any specific intelligence of a specific copycat event that they are concerned about. but here in new orleans investigators are learning a lot more about this suspect. what they are learning is that in the hours leading up to his massacre, the f.b.i. says that jabbar posted five videos to his facebook page. on there he said he joined isis before last summer and revealed initially he planned to attack his friends and family. but he ultimately decided to attack bourbon street because that would create better headlines for the quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers. this new video also shows the moment jabbar hit bourbon street in the pickup truck. he rapidly accelerates down the

street. it was packed with people celebrating the new year. there is also now some growing criticism of city officials that they didn't do enough to prevent this very kind of thing from happening. you can see here these big l-shaped barriers the city installed on the sidewalks yesterday before reopening bourbon street. they could have kept jabbar from accessing the road. when the police chief was asked about these barriers and why they weren't in place tuesday night she didn't know the city had them. >> where did they come from? >> actually we have them. i didn't know about them. but we have them and so we have been able now to put them up. a terrorist is hell bent on destruction. this man was going to do his best and if it hadn't been on bourbon he would go somewhere else. so we had this, we'll implement

it and end of story. >> we have also tracked down a report commissioned by the city on plans for new security measures in the french quarter. this report is from 2017 and it explicitly states this area also presents a risk and target air area for -- do not rely on ballards, exclusively. create a varied edge. it started a renovation of its barriers around the french quarter this past fall and were expected to complete the renovations before the super bowl next month. those renovations supposedly the city says would have prevented this attack from happening. a lot of folks asking why this didn't happen sooner? bill. >> bill: any way you look at it a tough pill to swallow for the families of the 14 that died that the barricades weren't in

place the morning this happened. live in new orleans, thank you. >> sandra: dan hoffman joining us now. former c.i.a. chief of station and thanks for being here. my question -- i put this to secretary mayorkas last night as well. why was this man, this killer not on the radar of the american government considering he was posting clearly terrorist propaganda, terrorist videos on his social network site that deemed them enough of a threat to bring them down themselves. why does the government not see this and have this person on their radar? >> that's a really important question to be asking and as we have new incoming administration with a new counter terrorism strategy, that has to be part of it, sandra. look, for counter terrorism operations you always look to detect threats way out left of boom so that we can preempt the threats before any harm is

caused. in this case we missed opportunities, you are absolutely right. >> sandra: it was the exchange with secretary mayorkas on your world yesterday. >> why was this person out there pledging allegiance to isis and not known by the government? >> well, there was no public expressions of his allegiance to isis except shortly before the tragic events of yesterday. if somebody sees something of concern, they need to report it to officials. the responsibility of homeland security is a shared responsibility and we are proud to partner with people across the country. >> sandra: right, so if the federal government is only relying on everyday individuals who are on their social media to notice these things and report them to the government i can't imagine that's a very thorough process. i will let you tell us that, dan. meanwhile, this is f.b.i. deputy

assistant director yesterday detailing what exactly was in the videos. listen. >> there were five videos posted on jabbar's facebook account timed skafrmd beginning at 1:29 a.m. and the last at 3:02:00 a.m. in the first video he planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers, end quote. additionally, he stated he had joined isis before this summer. >> sandra: this is blatant stuff, dan. >> it is. look, there is a role for state and local law enforcement here to know their community and what i'm going to be looking for is were there other signs that jabbar might have demonstrated that he either self-radicalized or recruited by isis not just at 1:29 in the morning before he launched this attack but weeks

or months earlier. and then for anyone who watched those videos it highlights for all of us, if you see something, say something. that was really, really getting down to the wire but it is not beyond the realm of possibilities that somebody could have watched the video and called it in. >> sandra: people have said something for it to be nowhere. the words of mike pompeo on jess watters prime time last night on how leadership has gotten us here, listen. >> america fails to lead. when you don't engage in solid law enforcement, enforcing criminal laws. can't secure the border, refuse to call out radical islamic terrorism and punishment you get the events of october 7th, the events of this past week in new orleans. you get a resurgence of isis, you get al qaeda growing again. it is a set of failed policies that the lead directly to increased risks across america

and all across the country. >> sandra: final thoughts. >> he is right. the trump administration will face a lot of threats to our national security. the one with the shortest fuse is terrorism. i expect the trump administration will mount a zero-based review of the counter terrorism strategy. we don't have the capability to find, fix and finish isis targets in afghanistan. they have launched external operations and by existing they are providing the oxygen for lone wolf isis attackers like the ones we saw in -- the one we saw in new orleans. we need a better approach to countering isis ideology and more integration between the federal government, state and local law enforcement as well. i expect lots of hearings on capitol hill and new policies to be in place soonest. >> sandra: great to get your insights, dan. thanks for being here. ♪

>> sandra: the scene in new orleans last night. musicians playing near a makeshift memorial for the victims of the terror attack. some of the families are coming forward of those killed. that includes the family of 25-year-old matthew. he was an audio visual technician at the superdome. his cousin said the sudden loss has his parents search for answers. >> did he suffer? we don't know if he died in the hospital, we don't know if he was instantly killed, we don't know. and, you know, that matters. that matters for a mother and a father. >> sandra: heartbreaking. among the victims is drew. he recently graduated from auburn university. the school saying in a statement words cannot convey the sorrow we feel for his family and friends during this difficult time. our thoughts are with the families of all the victims of

this senseless tragedy. bill. >> bill: authorities have officially identified the driver of a tesla cyber truck that exploded outside of the trump las vegas hotel. a decorated u.s. soldier from colorado. police say he shot himself before the car blew up. they used tattoos and military i.d. to figure out who he was because he was burned so badly. jeff paul is in las vegas and joins us now. >> police are only referring to the driver as a subject or person of interest into what they're describing is a suicide. the reason they aren't 100% confident in the i.d. because the body was badly burned. they found things inside that charred tesla cyber truck that led them to 37-year-old matthew livelsberger. he confirmed his i.d. through tattoos and partially burned

military i.d. and passport and two guns purchased just two days prior and evidence that livelsberger shot himself in the head. as far as why this happened authorities are investigating any ties to terrorism. overall the motive remains unclear. >> it is not lost it's in front of the trump building, that it is a tesla vehicle. but we don't have information at this point that definitively tells us or suggests it was because of this particular ideology or reasoning behind it. that's the purpose of the investigation. >> investigators spent time yesterday searching a home in colorado springs where livelsberger is from trying to find any clues regarding what pushed him to rent and driver that cyber truck from colorado to las vegas where it exploded in front of the trump hotel. defense officials tell fox news he is active duty special forces with the u.s. army, green beret.

morning. the first order of the congress of business is the election of a house speaker. keep in mind numbers are -- members will not be sworn in until a speaker is elected. it could be a nail biter. speaker johnson is fighting to keep the gavel. he has a very narrow margin for victory. joining us now is incoming house republican conference chair lisa mcclain set to nominate johnson today. congresswoman, thank you for coming on and for your time. a short time ago on "fox & friends" congressman jim jordan expressed full support for speaker johnson. take a listen. >> mike is a good man, a man of character, a man of integrity. hard work doesn't guarantee success but improves your chances. mike johnson has worked his tail off as our speaker. i hope he gets reelected today. i think he will. >> bill: he says he thinks he will win this thing in round one. do you agree with him? does it get done in the first round? >> i sure hope so.

he is an absolute proven leader in -- he was given this daunting task and he has done a very good job of navigating the waters. he has a very different approach, though. a very bottom up approach and like you said earlier, we have narrow margins but he has done a remarkable job. he is strong, he is an honest broker. and he listens. it might be a little messy out there but at the end of the day, that's people airing their grievances and talking about what they want to see the conference improve and that's really what we want is that bottom up approach. i'm confident, cautiously optimistic maybe, that we'll get it done on the first round. listen, president trump gave speaker johnson his full and unconditional endorsement. the coaches called the play. let's run the play and get to

work. >> bill: johnson can really only afford to one lose single vote. so far there is one republican hold-out thomas massie. a handful of other republicans who have said they are undecided. some weren't too happy with speaker johnson last month when the spending bill drama was going on. are you worried there could be some late surprises that come in later today? >> you know, i wouldn't use the word worried. i'm hopeful there is not any late surprises. i know that speaker johnson has been working tirelessly over the holidays and over the last few days talking with these members, having conversations with these members that have concerns, that have issues, that want to see change. i don't -- you know, i really don't think it is going to be that messy. my hope is that we get it done on the first round so we can deliver the agenda that president trump and the republicans have set forth that

the american people have demanded. >> bill: can anyone other than mike johnson get to 218 vote in your opinion? >> absolutely not. i just don't see. like you said, one vote. that's really difficult to do. i don't see anyone other than mike who is able to get this done. that's again why i'm so optimistic that he will be our next speaker of the house. >> bill: i want to talk about the attack in new orleans. a lot of pressure to get some of trump's picks for his upcoming cabinet confirmed and confirmed quickly when it comes to national security especially. i want to take a listen to the flip-flopping the f.b.i. has done in the initial hours of this attack to what we know now. take a listen. >> this is not a terrorist event. >> the f.b.i. believes investigative agencies we're investigating as an attack of terrorism. >> we do not believe that jabbar was solely responsible.

radicalization is what hatched to his brother. what was your take away from your conversation with his half brother. >> i did. he was completely shocked by all this. we spoke at his childhood home. one of the things that the f.b.i. said was that on the way to new orleans jabbar posted on his facebook page saying that he was inspired by isis as we know. and that at first he was going to actually target his own family and friends. that why i wanted to ask his own brother how it felt hearing that. he stood back and he said it was so chilling to hear that. just shocking and heartbreaking. i want to show you this picture of the jabbar family from the early years when the boys were just kids. his brother adored jabbar, as an adult now he gave us these photos saying they are 18 years apart. the family did not see any red flags. jabbar grew up in beaumont, texas and went to central high school. from 2007 to 2015 he joined the

army as a human resource specialist and information technology specialist with a quick real estate career and more recently working in i.t. again. later in life he seemed lost and on a path to self-discovery . he went through two divorces, three kids and was having massive money struggles. his brother says he grew up muslim but says jabbar stepped away from his faith in the 20s. he said that decision to join the army was just a way to get on the right path and really figure out his career. he didn't want to show his face for his own safety reasons but he spoke to us and says his brother was trying to find a sense of purpose in his life and as you mentioned blames radicalization for this attack. >> i think so, yeah. i mean from start to mid to ending, after his divorces i'm sure he was -- he was looking for some type of guidance to

help, you know, in his life. something to give him the right answers. this would be the only indication that i have that there was some radicalization that came into play because, like i said, outside of this, nothing else raised any type of alarms, you know. >> investigators right now trying to identify that path, how he went from army vet to isis supporter and sources just told us that they confirmed there was bomb making materials in his home here but wouldn't elaborate on what those materials are. >> bill: tough for the family to hear he wanted to kill them but wouldn't generate enough headlines. thank you for getting that report. >> sandra: let's bring in louisiana attorney general liz murrill. thanks for joining us today.

you were sharing concerns how quickly they were returning to the sugar bowl. everything went off without a hitch. first your thoughts this morning as i put this new f.b.i. poster up on the screen, new images that had been released. you are trying to generate as many leads as possible now that this investigation is in your hands. so what is it that you need the most right now to continue to investigate this situation? >> well, sandra, the investigation is actually entirely led at this point by the f.b.i. there was a new agent at the press conference yesterday who is with the counter terrorism group and he reported a lot more information. i think we will continue to see a lot more information coming out with the deeper psychological profile on this individual. that will help everybody, not just us but nationally to understand what drives conduct like this and at the end of the day we still have to plan for it, because you just never

really know who is going to be the person who snaps and, you know, i saw the coverage saying -- his brother saying he was looking for some answers. he clearly came up with the wrong ones. >> sandra: madam attorney general, yesterday you shared concern you weren't getting information from the feds as the investigation was continuing. have you been getting briefed more? >> yes, they are giving us information. i think -- i guess i would say we always want more information in a situation like this rather than less. it is a rapidly-moving situation. obviously i was concerned that we weren't getting the communication that we needed to get. i think that is improving. there are a lot of f.b.i. agents on the ground. we are seeing more engagement from higher levels of leadership. i'm still concerned that there is a void of leadership in washington, d.c. and that affects everything all

the way down. and so that's going to be a problem that is going to continue until we get a new administration in place. so i'm really, really hoping we will see very quick transition and have leadership in place quickly. because it is a national security issue. >> sandra: news just coming into this from the white house that the president now plans to travel to new orleans this coming monday. we're just learning that. your reaction to it. >> good. well, it's good. i think that's an important -- it is important that we have national attention on an issue that can happen in any city. we do have other large events that are coming into new orleans. we intend to make sure the city remains safe and is safe for those events as we move towards the super bowl and mardi gras. but i think that again we have a void in leadership in washington. we need that problem to be solved.

>> sandra: san president biden is traveling to new orleans monday. the streets of new orleans were certainly turned back over from the f.b.i. investigation on the ground in bourbon street, it reopened yesterday. we saw people take back to the streets. to your point, though, now the goal is to make sure everybody stays safe. atf special agent jackson on fox yesterday. listen. >> able to tap into emergency support function 13 resources. this allowed us to bring additional explosive detection canines so we can safely sweep the city and safely sweep the super bowl in preparation for the game today. these resources will still be in the city as we lead up to the super bowl and through mardi gras. >> sandra: so that will be the goal to keep everybody safe and by the way, what we keep hearing from folks traveling there and locals as well, they don't want the terrorists to win.

they want their lives to return back to normal, or some sense of normalcy. what assurances can you make that that can happen? >> well, i was there yesterday when the game was just getting ready before kickoff and i felt entirely comfortable the city is secure and that it is going to remain secure as we work our way through and up to and through the super bowl. there is a huge law enforcement presence there. national guard there. the federal government has resources on the ground and they are not only bringing bomb sniffing dogs in but sheriffs bringing resources from all over the state and i am confident that new orleans is going to be secure. but it is still a national issue that we need to not have a void in leadership and we need a smooth transition. so i would really like to say pam bondi and kash patel confirmed quickly so we don't

back is one of the most popular restaurants in the quarter. for so many of us who know that restaurant well it is a pleasant sight to see you there. you and bourbon street reopening. how are you doing considering the restaurant's proximity to where it went down a couple of days ago? >> yeah, good morning, sandra. you know, it's first and foremost our hearts go out to the victims and we are so thankful to the new orleans police department and all the other agencies that did such a remarkable job night of as well as, you know, getting us back to where we are today. i told my team yesterday morning, you know, i'm more comfortable here with you feeling a sense of normalcy being with you than just at home wondering what's going on. so yesterday was a big day for us. it was nice to be in the room where we spend so much of our

time with our team family. so we are just ready to reopen the city of new orleans. i think everyone did a great job yesterday. as the mayor said, new orleans is built to host. the walkability of the city, the culture of hospitality that we bring and the food and entertainment that new orleans represents is strong and we are ready to continue moving forward. >> sandra: your restaurant is an institution and world class, world renowned food, service, all of the above. i remember going to school in baton rouge, a special dinner for a most special family occasions would be hosted at your restaurant. you represent so much when i comes to that area. when folks start coming back and you talk to people and clientele, how are people feeling about this and do you get a sense that there will be a

return to normalcy? >> i definitely do feel that there will be a return to normalcy. you know, it will take a little bit of time but we're ready, that's for sure. at noon yesterday we were ready to open the doors. we certainly saw customers that we see on regular frequency and it made them feel good to be in the room that they feel comfortable in with, you know, the people that they recognize. we are celebrating 120 years in 2025. we were founded in 1905 and there are so many families that have been coming here for generations. some of them on a weekly basis. those that were with us yesterday certainly revered the time and were happy to be there because it does bring a sense of normalcy to them. >> sandra: i want to tell our viewers what they are seeing
