8:05 am
president-elect donald trump just raised the pressure right before the new congress by putting extra weight behind mike johnson's speakership bid. they have to do that part first. they have to get a speaker of the house and then the swearings in will begin today. johnson already had the endorsement of trump. that happened on monday. he faces a narrow path to the speakership. if all of the members of the house are present, johnson can only afford to lose two republican votes. we know already that one republican is on record saying he will not vote for mike johnson. several others have either refused to commit or undecided or simply just don't want to say in public until it is time to vote. we don't know. we will bring you all the latest from the house floor when the new congress convenes in less than an hour. coming up in just a few minutes we'll also get into all of it with republican congressman like lawlor. they're assembled on capitol hill.
8:06 am
the news is happening right now and what so many of them have expressed, even some hold-outs now, even late breaking this morning hold-outs are expressing the need to vote the way that trump, the incoming president, has asked to get his agenda going. we're covering all of it and we're on this. investigators are combing through evidence to try to find out what led a u.s. army veteran to plow his truck into a knew years eve crowd in new orleans. 14 people are dead, additionally one other, the gunman. many more are injured. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus." chilling details coming to light about that deadly terror attack. the f.b.i. released these images of the suspect near bourbon street just over an hour before the horror unfolded. they also put out a photo of a blue ice chest which contained one of the two i.e.d.s we covered at the scene.
8:07 am
the f.b.i. is trying to talk with anyone who may have passed the suspect or seen that ice chest. the agency has an important update. >> we know that he specifically picked out bourbon street. not quite sure why. that's the stuff in the coming days as far as the path to radicalization that we will dig into and make a priority. he was 100% inspired by isis and so we're digging through more of the social media, more interviews, working with some of our other partners to ascertain a little bit more about that connection. >> harris: all right. that was yesterday. we are continuing to bring to light all the things that they do as we learn more about the victims of this tragic attack. i asked my team to put this together. i think this is so important because the person or people who should be known after that work of evil by a gunman and truck
8:08 am
driver are these people and those who were injured today. we don't have that complete list but this we do have and we pray with and for the families and friends of those who have been identified as the 14 people murdered. most of them are in their 20s, the youngest is 18 years old as we learn more, we'll share it. investigators have wrapped up a search of the suspect's houston home and sources are telling fox news law enforcement found bomb-making materials in the house. the f.b.i. is also looking through his social media, including videos where he talks about supporting the islamic state. brooke taylor is in houston, texas. brooke. >> hi, harris. we went to his childhood home and i got to speak to his half brother. we sat down with him. he describes him as being lost, trying to find himself and on a path to self-discovery. i want to show you a picture
8:09 am
that jabbar shared with us when the boys were kids. his brother is an adult now. they grew up in beaumont, texas, attended central high school. his brother tells me joining an army was a way to find something to set him straight and ground him and maybe find a viable career path. after his divorces his brother tells me he was looking for guidance in miss life. he didn't want to show his face on camera but said he and his brothers were raised muslim and he blames radicalization for this attack. >> maybe around in his 20s, his late 20s or early 20s, i think he kind of took a step away from the religion. just doing his own thing, you know. partying, what not, you know, as a college student, things like
8:10 am
that and then i think after his most recent divorce is when he decided to take a step back and, you know, maybe do some self-discovery. >> fox digital got pictures from inside of the home that he was living at here in houston where sources now tell us they found bomb making materials but they won't elaborate on what those materials are. the f.b.i. says jabbar posted a series of videos on facebook saying he was inspired by isis but also said that at first he was going to target his own family and friends. but it wouldn't generate the same headlines so when we spoke to the brother i wanted to hear what his own family had to say about that. listen to what his reaction was. >> it's chilling. it's shocking. it's heartbreaking honestly. >> now investigators are going
8:11 am
through his social media, his laptops and cell phones trying to piece together how we go from army vet to isis supporter. harris. >> harris: all right, thank you very much for getting us started with that. charles moreno, former dhs senior advisor and secret service advisory agent. first of all the burning question, are we in a position where we are truly protected right now as american citizens? you have a situation and there haven't been any direct lines between the attack, the evil that happened in new orleans and the explosion and killing that happened there in las vegas with that truck, that tesla truck. but are we -- do we have enough leadership on that? i'm just wondering. >> well we don't and we aren't protected the way we should be. there are a number of reasons for that. one, both of these investigations in new orleans and las vegas are both ongoing.
8:12 am
as you can tell from the briefings being conducted by the f.b.i., those briefings are being conducted but there are caveat,, like at this time. information can change. we know that the subject in new orleans and in las vegas were both unknown to federal officials. the first question is how many more unknown unknowns remain within the country at the macro level? we know the biden administration has never made the safety and security of the united states and the american people a priority. how do we know this? they have embraced threats from around the world and literally ushered them across our open borders. that has allowed very dangerous individuals into the country and specifically related to the two attacks that took place here, the additional thing it has done it has now allowed people to become radicalized here in the united states. when we previously spoke about
8:13 am
radicalization, it was always where did they travel to and was it done online? now we have to also ask ourselves and we see this each and every day in the streets of new york with these protests wearing allegiance to hamas, that we have a radicalization problem in this country and that is thanks to the biden administration. >> harris: i'm glad you got to new york. a short time ago the mayor of new york eric adams said in an interview and perhaps he said it since or before but i hadn't heard it, that he had with martha maccallum here on this network that the radicalization of people in this country is an immediate threat. now i'm paraphrasing him. he had more dire words that i just used. new york in particular we look at with the hundreds of thousands of people who haven't been vetted. 58,000 of them committed crimes in their former countries in the city. so when i talk about protection, what do we need at this point?
8:14 am
>> we need to be realistic about the threats that are out there. look, we know that isis and al qaeda have always proposed that lone actors or cells utilize vehicles to conduct mass casualty events. new orleans should have been prepared for that. that perimeter needed to be hardened. we've got big events like the super bowl coming up, the inauguration. this recent event is a stark reminder of just one of the many threats that we face from these terrorist organizations and the people that they radicalize, these people that are susceptible to carrying out suicide missions in an effort to kill as many americans as possible. security plans need to be adequate to address these threats. whether we're talking about attempted assassination of former president trump or talk about securing large events. the resources and the planning need to match the threat level. no more excuses.
8:15 am
nobody needed to die on bourbon street. the security plan should have mitigated that threat. >> harris: you just tied a whole lot of things that only happened within a few months of each other. we have got to get it together. you and i won't get into this today but dhs is too big. i need to beat the drum harder on that. all the agencies you listed are under that one umbrella and they couldn't even handle one hurricane at a time. i have a lot to say. thank you for your expertise and time. appreciate it. >> thanks, harris. >> harris: the battle for the gavel is on in the house. >> not having a speaker in place only loses time and it works against the trump agenda. most republicans were elected to make sure that that agenda promise made should be a promise kept. >> harris: speaker mike johnson facing a narrow path to hang onto his job of leadership in today's vote. will president-elect donald

>> harris: we're awaiting the swearing in of a brand-new congress, 119th. its first order of business, as i told you moments ago before the commercial, is electing a house speaker. no other members can be sworn in. no business can be done until a speaker is chosen. and mike johnson's fate could hinge on a single republican vote. the current speaker has been meeting withhold-outs. the people who say they won't vote for him. one on the record for that. others who said they haven't made up their minds or don't want to say.
8:22 am
president-elect donald trump put his full backing behind johnson this is the latest post on his truth social. a fine man of great ability who is very close to having 100% support. a win for mike today will be a big win for the republican party and yet another acknowledgement of our 129-year most important presidential election. johnson expressed optimism today. aishah hasnie, senior national correspondent, on capitol hill. >> i keep looking over to my left because i'm waiting for speaker mike johnson to leave his office and head to the house chamber floor any moment now. he is still the speaker because what's interesting -- i don't want to read too much interest this. something strange has just happened. they were supposed to adjourn the 118th congress at 11:00.
8:23 am
that hasn't happened. they just recessed. so technically speaker johnson is still the speaker and they haven't started the process. remember, once they adjourn the 118th congress they have to go into the speaker vote. perhaps there are still conversations happening in the speaker's office that they've delayed it a little bit. so far walking into this vote, the map is not mapping for speaker johnson now. at least one no vote. one official no republican, that is thomas massie. fox is told there could be between 12 to 27 republicans who might vote for someone else. might is the word i want to overstate here that they could change their mind when that vote begins at noon. so again we're watching and waiting. watching the house floor to see when they get this going. what we'll see first is a quorum
8:24 am
call an the nominating speeches will begin. if everyone shows up the magic number today is 218. johnson has been meeting withhold-outs talking about everything from the way the house functions, rules, cutting the deficit. boebert threw out an offer if johnson would make congressman chip roy the chairman of the very powerful rules committee, then he would get this done in the first round. johnson poured cold water on that earlier today. >> i don't do quid pro quo. i don't do anything in exchange for a vote other than to commit to make this association work as efficiently as possible. >> nobody else is vying for the speakership. president trump wished him good luck earlier this morning. one more thing to keep in mind. democrats will not be helping johnson out today. they will not save him so he has
8:25 am
to secure 218 republicans. he can only lose one vote which he is going to. >> harris: of course democrats will do that. they'll vote for hakeem jeffries. not just because it is their guy. any confusion on the right side they will fundraise off that. of course they will. such a pomp and circumstance to have the top with people resigning and so on to put the 118th to bed. we'll await at about 11:45 they will begin the process of that 119th. we'll await that and appreciate your reporting. thank you. in "focus" now mike lawlor republican congressman of new york. all right, so did you think it would come down to this? is one vote that big of a deal? do you think you can get it? >> well, harris, it is a new year but some of my colleagues are hell bent on doing the same
8:26 am
thing. we will see. obviously i think the speaker has worked tirelessly over the last few days to bring the hold-out's on board and get us focused on the task at hand. president trump will be sworn in january 20th. we need to hit the ground running. we can't waste one day squabbling amongst ourselves over nonsense. the fact is the american people gave us a house republican majority and a senate republican majority to govern, to get about the business of the american people and that's what we need to do. every minute wasted stops us from doing that. >> harris: it is interesting, i was speaking of one person, congressman massie that we know of. the way you are talking there could be more than one. the undecideds could be that. not just people who haven't expressed what they will do. >> there are a handful of folks
8:27 am
outside of thomas massie meeting with the speaker throughout the last few days. i think they've made great progress and i'm hopeful that we'll be able to get this done on round one. there is really no reason to prevent speaker johnson from being elected speaker. the fact is we have unified government come january 20th. we have to address the economy, the border, energy, international crises that joe biden has created. there is so much work to do but we can't do any of it without electing a speaker, including certifying donald trump's election on monday, january 6th. so any time wasted here stops us from doing what we need to do. >> harris: 17 days until inauguration day. when you talk about hold-outs and people who have gone against the current speaker, looking avideo of him arriving on capitol hill. one name is congresswoman marjorie taylor greene.
8:28 am
however, she now is in a manner explaining why all of you have to get behind president trump. >> you all have seen me disagree with mike johnson at times but you want to know something else? here is what i recognize. for the past four years, all of you and myself included have put blood, sweat and tears into electing president trump. here is what i'm asking my colleagues to do. let's put aside our pride, let's put aside our egos and put aside the infighting. it is time to come together as republicans. i will be voting for mike johnson. we'll elect a speaker and swear in as members of congress and then on monday, we are going to certify the most historic election in our nation's history. >> harris: did you ever think you would see it? she even said you've seen her disagree with mike johnson. >> she is 100% correct and i think she recognizes, as do most
8:29 am
of my colleagues, the seriousness and severity of this. the american people spoke and expect us to do our jobs. they don't want to see us put our egos forward or petty personal grievances. they want us to get to work. they expect us to act as adults and it is time for everyone to put their big boy pants on and get to work. we have two years to fix this country, grow our economy, secure our border, increase energy and reassert america's role in the world. that has to be our focus day in and day out. everybody has to check their ego at the door. she is 100% correct. >> harris: quickly, two situations under investigation, potential acts of terror inside the united states. how does that change the rubric of what you will do first once the 119th gets into place? >> obviously the safety and security of our country is paramount and why the senate must swiftly confirm president
8:30 am
trump's nominees to the national security apparatus, including the homeland security department. and why we need to move quickly to secure our border, to make sure that the f.b.i., the d.o.j., homeland security are focused on counter terrorism measures, and why we must reassert america's role in the world. our adversaries want us to fail. our adversaries want to take advantage of america's weakness under joe biden. it is time to put it to an end. it is time to reassert america's role in the world. time to secure our border and protect the american people. >> harris: potentially one hour for that and 17 days for the incoming president. representative lawlor, thank you very much. good to see you today. a new year, new concerns. we were just talking about this, about terrorism after those deadly attacks in new orleans. critics are now calling out the biden administration for

they all should be confirm swiftly. >> harris: you probably like in the house now found out they were all voting for hakeem jeffries. probably won't get a lot of help from the democrats. great the nominees are meeting with everybody on the hill like senator warner tied to helping military families. it's good. gianno caldwell, thank you. >> thank you. >> harris: a mighty show of patriotism and resilience at last night's sugar bowl. if you were watching it on espn you didn't get to see it. surprised? mary kathryn hamm in "focus" next. you've talked about parenting tips... ...college prep... ...and who's in the family photos. now, it's time to talk about what living looks like for you.

>> harris: a very busy day in our nation's capital as things are beginning to transition. congress is changing and in 17 days the president of the white house will change as well as tumble comes in. what we saw at the top of the hour was a lot of pomp and circumstance as the beginning of the process started in the u.s. house. senate got it done in less than five seconds, they gaveled in and out.
8:50 am
the house will finish that and at the top of the hour at noon eastern 119th congress begins to roll and we'll have it all right here on fox news channel. the iconic bourbon street in new orleans is back open. the city hosted the sugar bowl after being delayed. a football game on hold for 24 hours while they continued to make sure there weren't other people wanting around wanting to kill with trucks, guns and bombs. bill cassidy with this message for critics who say having the game yesterday was still too soon. >> terrorists win if they intimidate us. they don't kill somebody in a small town no one has heard of. they go to a place where international and national media attention and attempt to do something that attracts attention to strike fear in our hearts. americans don't live fearfully. they've locked down the superdome from way before the event happened but more than

that, we cannot allow them to intimidate us, sandra. if we do, they win. we must win. >> harris: the game opened with the national anthem and moment of silence for the people killed in the terror attack in new orleans and then the crowd with this defiant message to the terrorists. [cheers and applause] >> harris: usa. espn chose not to show that or the anthem or the moment of silence on its broadcast. one social media critic called it a shame. another beyond awful. a third said there is no excuse for that. fox's outkick reached out to espn for comment and we haven't received a response. mary kathryn hamm, fox news contributor and outkick columnist. we haven't heard from espn yet. we don't know if there was

nefariousness going on. we know they haven't spoken about it. somebody made the decision to do that. >> it is a shame because it is important for people to see americans coming together in that moment. they are celebrating an american tradition. they are saying you won't stop us from living our lives and also saying we want to honor these victims and we're stopping to do that and we're honoring our country and all doing it together. that was the most important thing that happened in the game. i'm not saying that because my team lost last night. someone made that decision. it was the wrong decision. when you are in a broadcast situation you have the afwoilt show something like this you make it happen. i think what happens at espn and disney. so many executives in charge and so many people work there are in a head space they think it is 2020 and doing things differently and thinking about things differently than normal americans are. normal americans want to watch this moving, wonderful ceremony

on their tvs. and someone over there didn't get that memo. it is not great for the country. it is not great for their business that that's not how they respond. >> harris: i feel for some of the rank and file whose decisions it may not have been. i have been put in positions where management decided. if you do simple math percentage-wise some of those people voted for trump and they want change and they wanted to see the patriotic moment not just because of how they voted. it was part of the reason. so perhaps the people at the top when we finally hear what happened. maybe a button didn't get pushed, we don't know. we'll find out. ceo of allstate insurance ignited a firestorm backlash on social media, though, for his message during the sugar bowl. >> our prayers are with the victims and their families. we also need to be stronger together by overcoming an addiction to divisiveness and

negativity. join allstate working in local communities across america to amplify the positive, increase trust and accept people's im perfections and differences. together we win. >> harris: political activist kirk said the ceo thinks americans watching the sugar bowl need an -- one said do you want an insurance company to talk about murder and terrorism this way? >> i think these are fair critiques. it was very tone deaf. the first part is fine. you are honoring the victims and giving prayers to those still suffering. thank you to the city of new orleans and all the law enforcement and military who made this event happen and who have been protecting people all the time in that city since this terrible thing happened. there is a person and ideology and evil that perpetrated something on people. not actually the time to ask for
