>> tyrus: thank you to charlie hurt, dagen mcdowell, vince august, kat timpf, our studio audience, "fox news at night" is next. on behalf of greg gutfeld, i'm tyrus and we love you, america. night". breaking tonight, mike johnson officially reelected house speaker on the first ballot after president-elect trump made and 11th hour call to g.o.p. holdouts avoiding a long messy battle for the gavel. >> if donald trump says mike johnson should be the speaker because i believe he will help and assist me with the american first agenda, let's support mike johnson. >> trace: plus, there is this up this. >> this particular terrorist drove around onto the sidewalk and got around the hard target. we did indeed have a plan but the terrorist defeated it. >> trace: it's becoming clear the city did not have a plan or at least a good plan because they did have sidewalk barriers. they just did not use them. the chief of police now says she did not know they had them.
8:02 pm
>> when you go down bourbon, you will see yellow -- along the sidewalk. that would be to be preventive if someone had, or if this particular terrorist went around up on the sidewalk, that's what that would do. we have them, i did not know about them, but we have them. >> trace: tonight, brand-new information on what appears to be a major security failure. and we will speak to the family of the 25-year-old who was shot and killed during the attack. investigators now say the army veteran who blew up a tesla cybertruck in las vegas left chilling notes saying his actions were not an act of terrorism but rather a wake-up call for america. we will have much more on that in moments but we begin with chad pergram with more on the top stories.

speaker johnson's narrow reelection and what it means going forward. chad, good evening. >> reporter: trace, good evening. mike johnson needed and 11th hour assist from president-elect trump to return to the speakership. at first johnson came up short of the votes needed to win. three g.o.p. members all voted for someone besides johnson but the incoming president push them to support johnson. >> he said mike johnson is the only one who has support to become speaker. are you going to give us specific examples? he said yes. i said we will take you at your word and that's why i changed my vote. >> reporter: though vote for speaker remained open for nearly an hour as republicans decided what to do. they wanted johnson to win on the first ballot.
8:04 pm
>> the vote did not close until the members came back down, presented themselves and asked to change their recorded vote. once that was completed, the votes closed. >> reporter: johnson promised change and fast. >> in coordination with president trump and his administration, we are going to create a leaner, faster and more efficient federal workforce. >> reporter: but johnson has a narrow majority. he could need democrats to pass some bills. >> i think he's going to have a problem but it's a lot harder when you have all three chambers of government and you actually have to govern. that means you have to bring the vote. >> reporter: johnson relied on democrats to pass major bills in the last congress. the right criticized johnson for doing just that. but leaning on democrats could be the only way with his slim majority. >> trace: and slim it is. chad pergram live in the nation's capital, thank you. let's bring in republican congressmen from texas, pat

fallon. congressman, great to have you on. your colleague, texas congressman, voted for byron donald's until he switched his first-round vote to the speaker mike johnson. he had the following to say on x "after receiving firm assurances from the speaker that republicans in the house will have strong representation during the budget reconciliation process, a cornerstone of president trump's agenda, i changed my initial vote." was it johnson who compelled his vote change or was it donald trump? >> honestly, keith is a good friend and so is byron donald's. the fact of the matter is we've got to get 218 votes to pass any major legislation. president trump and speaker johnson and quite frankly majority leader there and mac need to work together or we can't get anything done. the american people made it very

clear, 5 million more americans voted for republican candidate for congress than they did democrats. so we need to take our campaign rhetoric and, you know, ruto per the american people. >> trace: when you talk about pressure, foxnews.com wrote the following, "trump on the phone to work out the holdouts" going on to say two people who spoke with fox news digital said representative nancy mace connected trump with -- by phone after they voted against johnson. it sounds like the most pressure here came from the very top. there was a lot of pressure from within but the big pressure might have gone from the top. what do you think? >> being that the county is represented by both myself and keith, i think there was a lot of pressure from the grassroots all the way to the

president-elect. we wanted keith to vote with us are unified government. mike johnson has had one of the most difficult jobs in the country insomuch as we had divided government and we wanted results. it's difficult and we pass so many good conservative pieces of legislation out of the house but then chuck schumer could kill it. now it's majority letter -- leader thune so it's a different equation. with president trump in the white house to take care of business moving forward. >> trace: another one of your colleagues chip roy, was not satisfied without the one 18th congress worked and said the following on fox today... >> it was very important for a group of us to make clear that, you know, we are going to expect to the agenda that the president ran on to be delivered. mike johnson's affront to all of us but we weren't satisfied with the weight the 218th congress unfolded. >> trace: a lot of people were asking, you know, chaos within

the house, a g.o.p. house does not exactly help president trump's agenda go forward. >> there's no doubt. and i'm not satisfied with what happened in the 118th congress because it was divided government. the republicans had a very narrow majority just in the house, the democrats control the senate and joe biden was in the white house. you are not going to get great results for the american people, particularly great conservative results, when that is a fact. so now finally i ran for congress so we can have a united government, so we can produce. this is the time to perform. i'm very glad mike was reelected speaker and now it's time to get down to business with unified government. >> trace: congressman, thank you for coming on the show, we notice the t-shirt, the shirt, congratulations on the victory yesterday, it's been a long time coming. thank you. >> thank you trace, go irish. >> trace: for more on the political impact of today's speaker vote let's bring in former california state senate majority leader democrat gloria

romero, may mailman along with former g.o.p. vise chair siaka massaquoi. thank you for coming on. picking up where the congressman left off if you would, siaka, congressman ralph norman voted against mike johnson and then changed his vote and said this... >> we met with speaker johnson yesterday for an extended period of time and i just did not come away with the feeling that the willingness to fight for trump's agenda was there. the only way i had to let my voice be heard was what i did. i would do it again. >> trace: if you look at the from within two without or the other way, siaka, it looks like the president-elect is kind of gaining control of this body. >> i love to see -- first of all happy new year, great to see you. what we are seeing right now is president trump being the leader that the left on the left media

has been trying to water down with the whole president elon musk and whatnot. president trump is the one that's controlling the party. maga is moving forward nice and strong and everyone is getting on board because this is not about little fights in the house anymore, this is about an agenda for the american people. we have to close the border, we have to get our economy back on track and we have to make it safe for americans to grow and flourish again. everyone knows that's coming with maga. we can't sit back anymore and play these political games and i'm happy to see people get in line. >> trace: i think that's a fair assessment. gloria, you kind of been involved in this back-and-forth and these battles, "the wall street journal" writes about this, whether things can get done, it says a squeaker for the house speaker goes on to say democrats under nancy pelosi had only a four vote majority in the one 17th congress but managed to pass record levels of spending and much of the green new deal. republicans should be able to show comparable discipline on their highest priorities but
8:11 pm
they haven't so far in this maga era. will there be progress do you believe in d.c. with the republicans slim majority? >> i think there will be, there must be. i think what we saw today was what often happens. but today was a governance vote, it wasn't a policy vote. donald trump undoubtedly got on the phone, sort of the equivalent of the twisting of an arm. get in line. basically a few days after a massive terrorist attack on this country, this is not a time for showtime and playing games, it was the right thing to do and it's really a bit abominable that these three said we would have showtime at this time in america. >> trace: meantime the other breaking news, may mailman, this about the judge setting trump's sentencing date for january tenth. >> i think one of the reasons he was elected is people are tired of the alvin bragg's of the world. you have people being set on

need to be able to trust the fbi, trust of the city of d.c. to execute it. that is my fear. i'm mostly excited for january 20th and beyond when i know the border will be secure, when i know that the staff of the fbi will be focused on protecting the american people rather than inventing bogeyman. >> trace: gloria, now gavin newsom in california wants to make healthy food, he wants to get rid of the unhealthy food before rfk. 15 seconds. >> where has he been the last several years he's been in elected office? he's getting ready for 2028, delusions on parade. >> trace: gloria, thank you, may mailman thank you, siaka massaquoi, happy new year to all of you and thank you. there is brand-new information tonight about some of the security failures that led to the deadly new year's terror attack in new orleans. city officials now facing questions about why certain measures were not in place ahead of the celebration, despite previous warnings. senior correspondent mike tobin live in new orleans with more on

that. mike, good evening. >> reporter: good evening trace. you can probably hear the music in the background as bourbon street is trying to regain it's party legs. sad reminders like the memorial behind me of the lives that were lost here two days ago. we have new security video that shows the start of this rampage. you can see the vehicle speeding down bourbon street. in that video you can see at least one person there really missing that charging vehicle. also tonight we have uncovered reports of security assessments that warrant city leaders, new orleans was vulnerable to a mass casualty attack. and assessment done by -- noted the border is a fish tank of bad behavior, we create victims here and don't have the means to protect them. the ceo of meridian rapid defense told fox news that back in 2017 his company sold new orleans 48 archer barriers specifically designed to stop a charging vehicle. the barriers were only put out after the new year's attack.

racist. you see the billions they've dumped into this. it is a funded gaslighting of the next generation. as a student of history, a history teacher as a profession, we know where this leads. we have to put an end to this. this is why the people sent president trump back to the white house. he's been a champion of making america great again, returning to the core foundational principles. you take god out of the school, the bible out of school, the declaration of independence, the constitution, you inject this woke ideology, hatred for america, the country is headed towards a dangerous path with that ideology. >> trace: if you are wanting to reverse this trend, like you clearly are as the superintended of oklahoma schools, what is the first step, what's the remedy in your mind? >> the first step is you have to do what we are doing in oklahoma, get back to teaching american exceptionalism and patriotism. we've rewritten our history standards. every kid will know the influence the bible had on american history, the constitution, the declaration of independence.
