9:00 pm
>> trace: 9:00 in los angeles
9:01 pm
on the east coast a special edition of america's late news fox news at night and breaking tonight let's reset the issue. one of the wealthiest areas of los angeles is on fire this hour and we are talking about's strong santa ana wind. that could hit anywhere from 70 high for an 75 miles an hour in parts of southern california in the next 10-11 hours. the fire there for is rapidly expanding and in a few hours the fire in the palisades went from 1200 acres to around 3000 acres. keep in mind that that was three hours ago the latest update. were not due to get another update until 8:00 in the morning. so we haven't gotten an update on the size of the palisades fire in three hours and grew about 100% prior to that meaning the fire has grown much bigger. maybe dramatically bigger. 30,000 residents of
9:02 pm
pacific palisades which if you don't know is in west los angeles near the ocean sandwich between santa monica, malibu and brentwood and were talking about evacuations happening in parts of malibu and santa monica as well as parts of brentwood. in the palisades area more than 15,000 homes are threatened including structures like businesses and restaurants and so forth. we don't know exactly how many homes were destroyed but we do know it's a lot. we have seen reporters and correspondents walk through various neighbourhoods and you see dozens of homes that it burned it to the ground some officials are calling it the worst-case scenario. we get it back to matt who's been live here all night and has the latest for us on the ground. matt, a good evening. >> we are standing along the famous pacific coast highway in
9:03 pm
this area and we saw homes burned it to the ground earlier before the sunset. we saw the fire right behind me here in a residential area of the pacific palisades a short while ago i did speak with the l.a. fire captain who violated in erratic wind happening all around us right now and how difficult the wind is making yet for fire crews to battle these fires and he described what we witnessed which was the fire moving in all different directions rapidly from one direction to another causing embers to move in the direction of the wind we have seen that move north and south in all different ways and were where in santa monica they've issued a mandatory evacuation proportions a santa monica. for israel and we seen in stores
9:04 pm
that direction and temperatures from this fire and i've covered hurricanes is coming around the ocean here and it's coming closer to the storm and coupled likely with a historic fire again the palisades area and with it for miles and miles in southern california no matter where you are in and around the l.a. area you could see the fire and you can only wonder the devastation. right now we are in area as a command post not just for l.a. fire but for los angeles police. roussin emergency crews all night long large numbers of cars and vehicles and i spoke with l.a. fire a while ago they are underlining how much and how intense the wind is here they
9:05 pm
are extreme. >> you will get news for you as it warrants and we also point out looking at live pictures this is from our fox affiliate channel 11 in los angeles and they are covering the fire they've been wall-to-wall in their coverage all night long but these are some of the pictures in pacific palisades there are reports that some well-known restaurants and burn those to the ground. for many years and to its close to the palisades village and with some high-end shops up there including grocery scores -- stores and we know the fire as we see it with our cameras
9:06 pm
close to that area but we haven't been there in a while because they pushed reporters back so we don't know the extent of the damage or destruction which is happening in and around the palisades village but as you couldn't see were talking to people who lived in the area for the last hours talking about the person who lives in brentwood very close to santa monica who is under a mandatory evacuation and she had to grab her stuff and get out which is situation and he lives in santa monica as well he may or not be forced to evacuate tonight we will talk to him a minute. let's bring in the g.o.p. chairwoman fox news contributor as well as a santa monica resident and search and rescue
9:07 pm
resident as well as the external affairs officer but first i want to do a quick debrief with jeff paul who discovered so many fires and we first learned there are consequences to the fire in the pasadena area with the eaton fire? >> it's 400 acres and the reason that's a concern is as we are talking about the palisades fire and exploded in a matter of hours and we haven't gotten an update for several hours and in terms of the eaton fire and that the cancel class and its due to the high wind and and it goes
9:08 pm
for and making that decision to stuff happening over the next couple of hours with two fires monitoring right now but god forbid bid conditions get worse couple of very wet what years is pretty dry for seven or eight months on this and if folks at home there the last couple of years we've had some rainy season which you go out you go to hike in the hills and juicy trees are group growing and some green and when things tryout that becomes feel for the fire. so any of these embers and flames earning right now.
9:09 pm
you see those flexes and that's the embers. then when they move in some travel great distances they go to drier areas which sparks other fires. it's a giant chain reaction as you can see with those embers. that's exactly what firefighters are worried about. it said the worst nightmare scenario for many of the crews out there because there isn't much they can do. they can try as they might to put out these fires but wind is just howling. just creates more and more fires and this is one area of a very big area which is pretty dry and prone to fires now back to the panel and it's interesting here as a lot of these trees in southern california these are filled with oil many of them. it's like a mini bomb and what happens is the fire gets inside the oil goes up in the tree goes up in the becomes a big threaten
9:10 pm
some of the situations. the last big fire we covered the major fire we covered was in maui which destroyed a big chunk of the area there. and people would say well, it's different in there somewhere because both in the ocean but you said they probably aren't the same. >> looking at the example you see the trees in this area over there. you've got the coconut palms also high-end oil right. in the hawaii win they were looking out that initially there was more brush until he got to the ocean and pretty much destroyed the beautiful village... am sorry i don't remember the name of that right now. and now we're looking at santa monica where they're not cutting the power in these areas.
9:11 pm
and is there a safety issue is people are trying to evacuate and get out. you don't want to cut power when people are trying to get out when light is at a premium. their similarities and differences. no two fires are exactly the same. what we know is they both grow very fast. >> trace: they are growing fast as you see the pictures. era live images from our cbs affiliate in los angeles. we keep switching back and forth with whoever has the best pictures and rate now our fox 11 affiliate has been doing exceptional work all night. this is the definition of a firestorm. you see the wind and you see what's happening to the structures there. many evacuations some 30,000 in the palisades there were more in santa monica. there were some in malibu as well. to you gabriel you've had family who have been evacuated and you, yourself, could be minutes or
9:12 pm
hours away from an evacuation. do you go home and go to sleep. also your family have you checked in with them did they get out and get what they needed? >> most of them in harm's way or out and safe but the speed things are moving it's tough to say two hours another neighbourhood could be gone. it's moment by moment. >> trace: so you're probably not getting a good night's sleep what even do when you go home? >> i'll be up. >> you have a plan? >> yes. >> i have three children there. and a brother and a sister dentistry i'm one of seven and we all live close by. >> trace: what are you taking. >> one of the kids probably. wife couple of pictures and
9:13 pm
passports a -- and whatnot. things like that let's listen in. >> the flames nearby and uncertainty they are feeling and how insecure they feel as well. do we actually have a report. what we do have on the line is from the city of pasadena we have lisa thank you so much. for taking the time out and for being with us tonight what can you tell us about the eaton fire and how it's impacting the city of pasadena? >> over 400 acres have been impacted and a thousand homes threatened. we are requesting some strike teams so numerous personnel coming out of state potentially to support us and evacuating an assisted living facility would
9:14 pm
help the police department. we set up the shelter here and we do have mandatory evacuations and we do ask that people take this seriously as we are with what's been going on in the palisades. when we tell you to evacuate please do so. be prepared for those also in the outside jurisdictions for evacuation. >> okay thank you so much we will check back in with you later tonight going to the ground right now. >> trace: that's our fox affiliate we've a seniors center being evacuated in altadena which is near pasadena and the eaton fire is in that area. as jeff reported earlier it's now around 400 acres at last check. those checks were a couple hours ago now i don't know what the life picture is now but it is a
9:15 pm
skies of you without big the fire is getting in this area. i do want to just briefly bring in a los angeles resident who has been evacuated. was it a mandatory evacuation what were the circumstances and what's the situation now for you? >> thank you for inviting me and earlier today is leaving for an appointment to beverly hills and i was on a call with diane and i looked at my side view mirror i saw billowing smoke coming out and i thought i had turned around the car and do it just billowing and billowing. i went up to my house packed my husband a suitcase as well as myself. i packed my dogs things as well and then when he came home he said he wasn't going anywhere and then i told him were going
9:16 pm
right now. we laughed and it was just billowing into billowing the flames were coming so we left brentwood and when we got to sense that we were back-to-back. we took an hour and a half to get to beverly hills. it was so scary. >> trace: where are you now and what's your plan for the coming days? >> we came to beverly hills hotel because we have a lot of events here. we are very pro-trump and have a lot of events here so we came here and plan on staying here with our dog and our children are also grown-up so we plan on staying here for a day or two ottawa. we don't want to go back up there because we want to make sure if, for any reason, the fire department needs access they have access to them and everybody is safe.
9:17 pm
>> trace: best of luck thank you for coming on. check back in with us as we do appreciate your time as we navigate all of this and keep looking for patterson's she's in politics and when you are in politics in california you know where every town is and wear every city is because you representing them and you want that representation in those areas so you go to meet the people and when you look at these your thoughts are i've been in these places i have worked campaigns in these places it's interesting to see out different areas handle emergency responses. >> it's interesting because when you talk about california everybody knows california. this is the pacific palisades there was a tv show called that. a week ago the entire world watched pasadena and our beautiful rows parade and rose bowl. california is such a quintessential place the entire world knows about.
9:18 pm
so when you see images of a beautiful town and cities on fire it's heartbreaking for the entire world to watch. >> and jason when you hear news come across like there's not enough resources. the fire chief in orange county told us there isn't enough resources. you lived in southern california involved in saint -- state politics what happens in that situation? who is going to be the leader in this. who picks up the baton and says we will get this done? >> cities will get overrun the state needs to come in and the federal government which as unlimited resources needs to get there. not only is the concern the actual fire but the smoke. it's thick in those pictures you people with respiratory challenges to start with and they need to be able to get the
9:19 pm
mask to get peoples out of this so they can breathe clean air then they worry about the scammers coming in and people doing alluding. if you think your insurances ends expensive now imagine what that will be like. there's plenty of ramifications going on. and i can tell you right now it will be neighbour helping neighbour it's churches helping to step up and make things happen. but you try to set aside politics and you see the first responders there isn't a responder for every home. you need to be able to do this and get churches mobilized to help your other neighbours. >> trace: and very quickly back to you jessica if you live in california and were in malibu and the palisades and brentwood it is difficult for you to get homeowners insurance because the homes themselves are extraordinarily expensive and
9:20 pm
many people can't get them because even if they could afford the home they can't afford the insurance and all these insurance companies one by one are pulling out of california and this won't help. >> true and the challenges we face in sacramento have affected this the policies california democrats who championed here made it difficult. remember when we had paradise fire. there was a great moment to where president trump and speaker mccarthy came out with that then governor jerry brown and governor-elect gavin newsom they all came down and visited the area. this is a moment where they need to me at it again and we need to make sure we come together for all these people who have lost so much. >> trace: we should and president biden is actually in los angeles was supposed to go to a different area altogether for an event but he did not go there because of the fires he
9:21 pm
came to los angeles out of harm's way obviously but he is expected to stay the night and then leave sometime tomorrow. he might decide to stay and meet with the governor we don't quite yet no the schedule for tomorrow. bringing back jason if i can as we look at the images we've been seeing of this evacuation of the senior centre in these images and this camera this is going on in several areas of los angeles right now specifically in the palisades and parts of santa monica and parts of pasadena and what you make of what's happening now and you see the police bearcat usually that's a vehicle reserve for police activity and it's a rescue vehicle where senior citizen's move to safety and you
9:22 pm
see them loaded into the back of that i saw an agent there everybody's coming in to help them do it whatever they can to try to make sure people get to safety one point i would make the captain of the los angeles county fire the public information officer there made a good point you not the way to be told to evacuate before you evacuate if you thinking if you should or not go plate safe and go don't wait to be rescued take matters into your own hands and go to a safe point tonight. >> and on that note we did learn and hurricanes you don't want to evacuate until you're told to evacuate you don't want to clog at the roads you don't want to become a nuisance and people to leave their cars because they got in traffic jams got out their cars and had to bring in some of these dozers to come in knock these off the roads to be
9:23 pm
book a get clearing get out of their homes on that what you think about that. >> case no let you respond but let me just get armand here and then we get that responses well. >> they to be in control of everything especially when you talk about getting access to emergency vehicles communications is so violent and talking about command centres and operation centres set up if you can communicate with units or local media and we have other mechanisms to get the information out to the people at that point you get confusion and things start coming up and was going in a bad direction and you can't make it with the nearest asset on site and with the
9:24 pm
absorption in looking at the incident command teams and that they weren't thinking and about those meteorologist and with the incident command team at the joint operations center the main jobs keep firefighters safe and in a some of the most important folks involved.
9:25 pm
>> of where there's hurricanes and devastating weather and specialness places like fires and they tell you what the conditions are going to be when you go out to fight that fire tomorrow morning and in this case if you don't know the conditions are going to be windy and very dry we've been going over this again and again and we expected a wind right now and with hurricanes straight wins coming for areas like pasadena these areas to come off the mountains in crawford that deserts and they go through the deserts they pick up pete and they come in with a vengeance in the southern california area only instead of coming off the ocean they come off the desert so they are hot and dry. the humidity there measures
9:26 pm
tomorrow between ten and 13% it's a very dry when talking about southern california and getting around 60% humidity and the firefighters are fighting this at 13. and it's a battle time is not on the firefighters side and when we talked about the massive fast growth by 8:00 in the morning and they better availability to survey the landscape and they have drones that come with infrared cameras in the could be hot spots and exploded to other
9:27 pm
fires at the same time and what was extra rated as we head towards nightfall. >> trace: that is our kt tv and again the car is on fire there's a lot of stuff on fire so there's a lot of confusion there and it was moving in the right direction and this one is tricky and with that confusion and the unseen a lot of updates over the last several hours and the worst part about it all is that wind is expected to get worse tonight and when there isn't the glimmer of hope yet that is making it very difficult for people and jason you been watching and listening for the last 12 minutes with us and
9:28 pm
might not be nearest but the smoke is all-consuming and going through smoke inhalation if they don't get themselves down and into a safe area and away from the smoke and if you've and evacuated yet or haven't even given that consideration do you think law enforcement or the fire department has time to pick up the phone and you have to put then your own hands and get them out of the way and with what first responders need you to do and we should also note that she was a reporter here in los angeles for a lot of years and a journalist as well who covered many wildfires and you look at this and you see the devastation right up the road
9:29 pm
from you and in fact from the studio it's maybe a five minute drive to where these flames are burning right now. >> a covered it for 15 years it feels apocalyptic so terrifying to watch the dramatic behaviour have never seen it behave quite like this and i see many people covering who feel the same way and it was pounding my hat chest hearing these sort stories from friends and the impacted areas who had to flee from their homes and in the palisades area stuck in gridlock you've never seen an evacuation like that and according to drivers who were stuck in the gridlock there was a first responder who said if you guys want to live you need to get out and go. and then you see firefighters coming in and having to bulldoze so they get free pounding does compounding a bad situation making it worse it's absolute insanity. coming down the freeway to the
9:30 pm
studio here there's this ominous hue in the sky as you see the mountain range on fire and another thing that i have never seen in my years in recovery covering fires imploring all off duty personnel it's all hands on deck and and yet more people saying maybe we could use your help. and is very difficult for them they doing an excellent job facing cuts and less outpost in the los angeles fire foundation
9:31 pm
today raising funding for firefighters and if anybody is listening to this and supporting firefighters they really need it and they can stand outside with the ferociousness of the wind and what it's like on the fire line. and going back to matt finn momentarily and with hundreds of square miles and these fires burning people's homes to the ground we haven't gotten a number or update from the fire departments in several hours we know 8:00 in the morning the
9:32 pm
numbers are going to be scary and horrific potentially and we aren't even close for this event and it's up strongest part of the weather event there and then you have homes that are on fire close to other homes that aren't on fire i don't remember one which was as dense of an areas this one may be. in the fire area and an hour later it seemed like snow came down and we don't the snow on the way there and so cruise
9:33 pm
concern knocking these flames down. and over the last few months we've had those fires we are covering those couple weeks ago and this fire should be out in the next few hours and in this case nobody really knows. these thing is the unknown nobody knows by 8:00 tomorrow morning where we are going to be with this fire where it's gonna go you see a clearing up and then going out. and with the way at spreading in
9:34 pm
the fact santa monica is under evacuation i was speaking if you are in jeopardy or if you're concerned and we're watching it and i think we will be fine and sure enough evacuations tonight and then it's not had really need to get out. and electing a new pope. select a new pope black smoke is bad and white smoke is good and there was a lot of black smoke let's go to matt finn who is live on scene just outside pacific palisades. matt? and at smoky wind and it's an
9:35 pm
area serving as a command post for los angeles fire as well as l.a.p.d. and we see caravans coming all night with sirens. and then i spoke with l.a. fire and they tilt tell me the newest numbers in the evacuation zone those are the latest instructions from l.a. fire. the captain i spoke to a short while ago say that the wind is making this extremely extremely difficult to battle the called them erratic and we've witnessed in the last couple hours here on the palisades. they blow in all different directions keeping ri on the
9:36 pm
santa monica area and we see that mandatory evacuation and in santa monica. and it feels like worst-case scenario battling fire because the wind is intense and bouncing off of us and we sat going back to the ground earlier tonight and with the devastation behind us and we saw homes burned to the ground and write on this clip side and we have seen the devastation here and we see the fire near the palm trees and jumping the pch as well and he's
9:37 pm
correct and you've got famous restaurants coming down these sills. were not going to name any names and yet famous buildings' and it's home to a number of high-end businesses and stores and you don't know. yet the palisades high school. and with gymnasiums and so on. you know the athletic fields are definitely on fire and we know that some structures at palisades high school and thank god they are back at school there and it's almost
9:38 pm
unfathomable to think about it's compounding the situation for them and in the foothills in the mountains with wind gust reaching higher levels there and we see it everywhere. it spreading to areas as we see fire and it's something that officials are very can seen in and about. and you have to come up with a plan and what it's going to be tomorrow morning. and how erratic they were moving in the direction of the fire growing and he saw the firebreak when it is placed too close to
9:39 pm
the fire and it goes right around it. you waste a lot of time and they use satellite imagery and with firefighters rate on the scene and trying to contain that fire. go back to kt tv in their life coverage about three years here hopefully it's an emotional
9:40 pm
reunion there so one of my best friends from high school. >> under better circumstances it would be so much nicer. and somehow he found his way appear and going back down the road. and a pitch in to help unfortunately it wasn't doing much they were quite strong. and there's obviously a spouse not for what it was. during the live report and and
9:41 pm
was that a 7-eleven parking lot and getting to this location and not going to pick it up and just moves so fast like something we've never seen before going for miles and miles and as we report its starting out with only 20 acres and now has gone beyond 400 acres and it's growing. we're just not seeing any help from mother nature whatsoever. and gina silva who's been around for a long time.
9:42 pm
you worked with gina very good correspondent she's out in the field you know what the fire looks like and this one looks bad for everybody viewing it. >> especially with what tonight holds and the wind gets stronger with the aerial attack on pause so this would befall on the ground overnight when wind conditions are worsening and that's a major concern and when looking back to the fires in 2003 with structures in los angeles and san diego and the whole world was finding those fire with a neighbour had seen her a city and you look at the number of firefighters in on a certain area because of there is a lot of firefighters means a lot of confidence they can do well. if there's not many firefighters there's not much, much confidence we can get stuff
9:43 pm
done. we aren't seeing a lot of firefighters. >> it's a haunting image when you show up to a fire and you see it and you don't see one single fire truck or sirens you don't see any firefighters nearby and you see other buildings around it primed for that as well and it's an erie feeling knowing that not only is this building going to burn but others around it will burn and there's nothing you can do about it. there's a bit of hopelessness for some folks but what you need to think about which is the most important thing is you and your family and pets or animals get them out anything else can be replaced. >> trace: i have 45 seconds for you jason what are you looking for overnight heading into daybreak tomorrow? >> there are phone calls going on now between the office of emergency management there and los angeles county. the regional office there to ask
9:44 pm
for some type i hope for the state of california. they can do direct assistance in the form of incident management teams from other states and other regions in the area which is going to be important because as we go through a day or two of this the men and women you see on the front lines now are sprinting a marathon against a hurricane so you can't really last four straight days there and while every firefighter wants to do that physically they will be exhausted. so the try to bring in additional resources and some of that comes through in the form of that type of assistance. >> apparently there is a school bus on fire. >> especially as it's your alma mater and we look at this poor right now and looking across the street as we battle these winds. more buildings are burned down.
9:45 pm
just thick black smoke and again the wind with all this debris flying around. getting around 25 miles an hour getting close to around 40 it's hard to put this into words seeing this home on fire and all these other structures as well as a high school send it back to you. >> thank you matthew. ally picture from santa monica. >> trace: that's from our affiliate at kt t tv. he's been with them for seven years talking about about palisades high school. we knew some of the structures around the perimeter of the high school were on fire. we don't know if they were classrooms and we don't want to give you information which isn't correct but we do know that there were some things burning
9:46 pm
at palisades high school and thank goodness as christina said there was a lot of students to didn't have to go to school because they don't start again until next week. >> it is remember talking about devastation and all the buildings that are reported to have burned whether it's restaurants or iconic places people go to visit and i just don't think people realize the level of devastation until the morning comes in the los angeles is going to need america's prayers. >> trace: jessica that's the thing there's so many things that californians and american share and when you see schools and homes burning it's different. this is a wildfire doing significant devastation. >> it's heartbreaking to watch and i know it's difficult to see this loss happening in thinking about the logistics but it is
9:47 pm
important. some of these areas we don't expect this. you expected in places where these winds in the foothills in places which are very commonly affected by this. everybody needs to have a plan and it's better to have a plan before you are affected by this type of situation. that makes all the difference in your outcome when this happens. >> trace: yep and jason as you look at this it's a very good point because you look across fires over the past 15 or 20 years and pacific palisades hasn't been the centre of those fires. we've seen fires in malibu and the hills of brentwood. fires and santa monica mountains. we haven't seen many fires in pacific palisades you get that sense of us being out of the free and close to the water.
9:48 pm
>> and it makes the situation worse if you don't cut out the underbrush or have policies in place to clear out the fill that makes the fires go then you have 70 mile-per-hour wind and you have animals and things like rabbits and deer and what not coyotes as well getting panicked and they catch on fire and running catch other places on fire. it spreads and i'm struck by the idea that we are around 9:45 and the biggest wind is still yet to come. overnight they have hours of this that will continue on. >> trace: yep and hours and hours were fire cruise won't be in a lot of these places and we know wind is coming from the east and they head to the west because the wind is pushing up you look at lax where the planes are landing over the ocean onto
9:49 pm
the tarmac they usually go the other way and land coming to the west instead of coming from the west. now you have a situation where you know where the direction of the wind is going but you have no idea what the wind is going to do. you look at this here you know that this fire is creating its own whether they can go anywhere. >> yep and several hours from now could go a different direction as we talked about earlier on how fast the wind is blowing. this kind of fire consumes an entire house in just minutes. it's important to be ready and l.a. fire department has their set to go program if you don't know what to take and you are panicking look it up online. have the go bag ready to go so when that time comes you can actually go in an orderly fashion. that way you can get out of the area farm and let those first responders in. >> trace: let's go back to
9:50 pm
matt who is breaking news what did you hear? >> i spoke to l.a. fire a short while ago one of their captains tells me around 9:00 so 45 minutes ago multiple burn victims were reported walking nearby dukes restaurant in malibu a very famous restaurant and tourist destination here and l.a. fire can't confirm the number of burn victims or ages of them but they believe it was likely people walking from nearby neighbourhoods perhaps to take shelter nearby or rested near the property. that is near the area where the burn victims were found. l.a. fire also say at 8:30 so in hour and a half ago a female firefighter sustained serious head injuries and was transported to hospital for further treatment. the wind is still very strong out here with flames ripping across the hillsides in the pacific palisades area with the
9:51 pm
wind carrying very large embers in degree with it. >> trace: just for clarity dukes is on the west side of the pch of the pacific coast highway the fire for all intents and purposes is on the highway on the east side. there were victims who might have been involved in the fire at dukes. >> it's preliminary information. l.a. fire tells me they believe these people likely lived in the area of dukes the area where burn victims were found. i didn't personally see any of this but l.a. fire gave me this information short while ago no information on the confirmation of the victims. >> if you don't know dukes it's famous as a sister restaurant another in orange county used to be a bunch of them there are three main ones now but dukes is
9:52 pm
a malibu establishment and the people who live above dukes are living up in the cliffs the houses there are up in the cliffs. so getting down from there walking down from dukes would in itself be a difficult task to do especially in these winds and conditions so we keep our eyes on what happened at dukes and see if there's any kind of information coming out of there as that is the first time we've heard of injuries to a firefighter as well as people who apparently didn't get out in time. >> there were reports of a fire jumping pch to these establishments on the west side so i do think it's an immediate concern it can move in any direction as said so many people who are on the fire lines that i have respect for journalists who are out there covering this nonstop and all of them not
9:53 pm
