for close to 24 hours. it has been an absolutely terrifying scene for so many families. some in the pacific palisades highhighlands area where my daur goes to school, by the way, has friends and their family trying to get out basically one-way-in, one-way-out neighborhood. and too many people abandoned their cars, and the streets blocked and they were told go back to your homes and we'll do our best to protect your homes from the flames coming towards you. we have nowhere safer for you to goment they were hunkered down in the home. and flames literally at the front door waiting for firefighters who thankfully were able to eventually save them. you can imagine how terrifying this scene is. i think what is remarkable about this fire, having seen so many over so many years here in southern california, is we often travel 30, 40, 50 miles outside of l.a. proper to the areas
9:05 am
where the fires break out. this is in the heart of the city. this is pacific palisades. a really densely packed residential neighborhood. so these flames have just spread so quickly. dropping down on to the trees. embers flying from the trees. flying on to the roofs of homes. one home after another as we just showed you. it's like a domino effect. they just keep going up in flames. up in flames. up in flames. and the firefighters have been doing their best, obviously, but frankly, a big part of this area of los angeles is going to be lost. having been up here this morning, we don't know any official figures. there won't be any final figures for quite a while. but i can tell you it's going to be hundreds and hundreds of homes, businesses that are lost here. also the schools badly affected. my daughter attends palisades charter high school which is just about a mile down the road here. we heard in the press conference that that school has suffered significant damage. that's 3,000 students who go
