harold ford jr., jesse watters, and greg gutfeld. it is 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." ♪ ♪ a fox news alert. devastating and apocalyptic scenes in california. multiple raging wildfires scorching los angeles for well over 24 hours now. ravaging everything in their path, fuel pipe brocious wind gusts up to 95 mile-per-hour. the raging places are so far 0% contained. to people have been killed. jonathan hunt is in pacific palisades, california. he has been there all day. we appreciate your work and your update if you can tell us what you see right now. >> sure, dana, and the bad news for everyone here is the homes continue to burn. one after another after another. take a look at this one behind me. this was not burning when we started talking to martha maccallum just two hours ago, but flames flicked

over from another house that was burning, and within two hours, this entire structure, which is a large home, as you can tell, a large land here, almost completely gone. the concern now, as brian looks up here, is the home next to it. you can season flames just looking at the corner of that fence there. this is the problem here. we are getting these gusts of wind still. 30, 40, 50, 60 miles per hour, and they pick up embers from one of these fires, take it over there, and then that next house gets ablaze. the firefighters were here just a moment ago. they may have tamped down some of the area around the side of that, but they have now left. and as we look back down here, you can see the neighborhood ahead of me, almost completely destroyed. house after house after house. and another, as brian pans left slightly, another huge fire going on right there. and as we look up at the sky,

you can see the smoke here. the son has been trying to break through. and as i just looked back down ahead of us, fire looks particularly intense as we look towards, we are limited in how far we can go, both for safety and technical reasons, but that is a fierce one burning now. one more home was destroyed. and brian, just returned back to me here, brian. right behind me, we've got another one. happening again and again, dana. we are a long way from the end of what is already one of the worst wildfires in terms of destruction in california history. dana? >> dana: jonathan hunt, please stay safe. thank you so much. as the pacific palisades wildfire becomes the most destructive in los angeles history, the city's mayor, she was out of the country while all of this was happening. karen bass is back in the united states now. she had gone to africa to attend

the inauguration of ghana's president. meanwhile california governor gavin newsom and president biden are currently in the state getting briefed on the fast burning buyers with officials. the president pledging he is prepared to do anything and everything as long as it takes to contain the fires. they took no questions, but newsom was full of praise for joe and the president felt it was important to focus on this. >> only one piece of good news. my son lives out here, and his wife. they got a notification yesterday, their home is burned to the ground. today, still standing, they are not sure. but the good news is i'm a great-grandfather as of today. [applause] rate granddaughter. >> mr. president of the think you for being here. not just here today, thank you for being here. a 10-acre fire, less than 24 hours to go. >> dana: more on that in a moment. kennedy, let's start with you. you are somebody i thought of

first thing last night when i saw these are happening. i know you spent a lot of your life there. you had a home there and a particular exchange with jonathan hunt today. >> kennedy: i did. and it just goes to show you what a family fox is. so i was up all night with my daughters. incredibly worried about our home, our friends' home. our best friends live there. i talked to four of my best friends. they have all lost their homes within a block or two of where we live. as jonathan is showing you, it is a very fluid situation. i don't feel like any neighborhood is safe right now. it is house by house. it is not even street by street. and emily compagno knew i was very worried because i had a friend take some stuff out of the house, and there was so much that i left behind, and i left behind my grandfather's sword from world war i, and some baby pictures that you see there, that is nikki, that is jonathan hunt's producer, he was kind enough to drive by, and i asked him if he would look into the house and just grab a couple

of things for me, and he was able to do that. the 90 seconds that they had. our house may not remain. it is still a very unstable situation. i hope and pray it does, i pray for everyone there, but the fact that he was able to get those family heirlooms means so much to me. >> dana: i can imagine. that was definitely something over and beyond, and that is great. harold ford jr., your observations on this continuing situation? >> harold: i have, like kennedy, a few friends and family that are there and a dear friend who has lost his home and his family's home. the story is obviously only going to likely multiply. i hope and pray not only for all the first responders and those who have loved ones there, and obviously those who are affected. i am heartened by the fact that the casualty level seems to be low. don't get me wrong, the two people who have lost their lives, their families, our hearts and prayers go out to them. but the homes and the schools

and the physical structures that have been lost, the impact this is going to have, matt was saying at the outset, it is incalculable at this point, the calculations are enormously high at this point. it is only going to get worse. i would imagine some efforts to get water in these areas from various states or neighboring states is underway, and i am hopeful and prayerful that the weather improves so they can at least begin to do the aerial water drops in ways that can be more helpful. but this is just an awful, awful situation. my prayers go out to everyone in that area. >> dana: jesse watters. >> jesse: we are all praying for everybody out there, hoping it will turn turns out for you and your friends. that video we saw is so symbolic. one political leader is out of the country. you have another political leader who makes it about himself. an event another political leader just not doing his job. they contain 0% of this fire,

and he didn't need to be this way. this man cannot manage water or forests. you know they have had record rainfall and he hasn't built a single reservoir? hasn't broken ground on a single reservoir. the rain in washington. he is bragging about tearing dams down. he tore more dams down, four, than anybody in the history of this country. because the native americans told him to do it, because it would save some salmon. now look at this peered a couple years ago, donald trump issued an order to send water from northern california to southern california and gavin newsom sued donald trump to block it. because of smell, dana. it's the size of my pinky, this fish, supposedly in endangered species. no one really knows what it is therefore. no one really cares. and you know just happened? there is no water coming out of the fire hydrant because this man mismanages the water there. and it turns out last month you

know what biden and newsom decided? you don't need to protect the smelt after all. the whole thing was worthless. then you get to these forests. he hasn't built any of these roads that are used to escape. you basically have pacific palisades -- and guys know this -- you are in a cocoon surrounded by state parks, and you are blocked by the ocean. there is one way in and one way out, it is a death trap. he hasn't built a single escape route. so these people are just going to cook. and he doesn't do any controlled burns. this whole time barely does any of it. cut money for forests. they spent more money for homeless than they have on fires. and both of them are out of control. and then there is karen bass. she was invited to an inauguration for an african president and she left? why isn't american politician going to some other politician s inauguration? that doesn't make sense to me. you can say no, sometimes. this whole thing is a disaster.

worse. there is going to be a lot of people with nowhere to go. they are not going to be celebrities, either, that can go stay at the beverly hilton -- what do i know? i stay at the red roof in. i think you are going to have a lot of displacement. this looks like it is going to be, i don't know, months, years, billions and billions of dollars. will people rebuild? will they even have insurance to rebuild? it's a pretty -- and i hate commenting on how this happened while it is happening. so i won't. >> dana: we are going to have time to do that. i know that we want to tease, but i just want to ask kennedy one thing. because jonathan said something this morning on "newsroom" that has been with me, there's a lot of people in california that are wealthy, yes, but a lot of people who live in these areas are not, and they have lost their homes, too. >> kennedy: a lot of people who moved to the palisades that my girls have grown up with,

they moved there because there are public schools with their kids are safe, so they moved to the palisades, into apartment complexes and condominium complexes, or they rent homes, a lot of people who live there inherited homes from grandparents, and they went to palisades high school, and it is very family and community-oriented, and not everyone there -- the majority of the people that we knew, the parents in public school, they were hardworking families who are sacrificing everything to send their kids to schools when they couldn't afford private schools, and those are the kind of people that got dropped by companies like state farm, who just dropped a ton of people in this area, who thought they might get around to getting fire insurance, and now they have lost everything. i have a good friend who is a single mom, and she doesn't know if her home is standing. a neighbor across the street lost his home. he called her today and said i don't think your home is still there. that is literally all she has. she is a photographer. she left her home with her

>> greg: in the don is back in d.c. and getting down to business. days before his inauguration, president-elect trump is about to arrive on capitol hill to pay his respects to jimmy carter and he is aiming to bring the g.o.p. together with a big powwow with senate republicans in the next hour. trump also has the democrats' panties in a bunch over the pla. thinks his party should chill with the pearl clutching. >> there is a lot of talk about greenland. there is a lot of freak outs. of course i would never support taking it by force, but i do think it is a responsible conversation if they were open to acquiring it, whether just buying it outright. i mean, if anyone think that's bonkers, remember the louisiana purchase? i think alaska was pretty a great deal, too. >> greg: so far the conducts are not on board with trump

lamest dock of all time on the other end of this, so those two converge into president-elect, who is really the president, and this canadian thing -- he seems like scared when i talked to him. that's not how people act. people act, if you are about to take them over, don't you dare, don't even think about it -- she's like, listen, come on, guys, want a beer, sit down and talk, we are all friends here. he looks pretty vulnerable. trump, though, this is just child's play. trump has this mega bill he has to pass within a couple months, and there is really no room for error. and the senate wants to do it this way in the house wants to do it this way, and there is only one vote in the house that they can lose. they have this massive coalition with all these different types of people, and the democrats this whole time or just poking them, saying musk hates you. musk is really the president.

and thune hates johnson. they just have to walk this tight rope and this thing done and make america great again. >> greg: dana, i have a theory that secretly democrats are kind of happy trump won because now they can return to somewhat like the middle ground and stop having to defend the idiocy of extreme positions on trans, immigration, crime. what say you, young lady? >> dana: i think some of the democrats are agreeing with you. somebody from palisades, a podcast they do on the left, said what are they doing -- talk about this in a little bit -- biden does the interview and is asked, would you have been able to handle another four years, i don't know -- how can we possibly get past the loss if we are still went to defend the last four years. there is a reckoning to be had but president trump's positioning in the prepresidency is also an example of how weak the democratic party is right now.

and it is going to take them a while to figure out who is going to emerge. they have some squabbles on their own side, as well. that's actually probably healthy. but if you think about john fetterman, this is a guy who voted for the laken riley act yesterday. he is basically saying why is everybody freaking out? the democrats have something they can look to in him or in a tom suozzi, who is from upstate new york, let's not just freak out, maybe we can do something. because who else said democrats are too quick to overreact to things that republicans do? your favorite. alexandria ocasio-cortez. she says maybe we should rethink that. good idea. >> greg: harold. i would say in your face, but i'm going to give you a shot here. dana brings up a good point about fetty. he seems like you're only bet for 2028 if you don't enter the race. >> harold: you think about it, he was not a favorite of some,

and he has become a favorite because i think he continues to learn and evolve as a legislator. i would to a couple of things. trump's transition, remember, reagan had one heck of a transition because you had hostages in the middle east and the hostages were released shortly thereafter. most presidents have many for transitions. this one is interesting because both chambers have gone republican. the house did not go republican. only a 2-seat majority or 1-seat majority, once these special elections happen, still going, to be narrow. i would hate -- i would do this a little different with the actual things i would be doing. but he has to demonstrate to congress that they should fear him in many ways because with such a narrow majority and some of the things he wants to do, you look at the diversity of that caucus, some of them may be willing to vote -- not against them, but may want him to

placate them a little bit more, negotiate with them a little bit more. two, i don't mind some of the language about greenland and panama at all of those things, but i do think that i've said it before -- the strategy, the border, culture, that is why the president won. and if he is able to talk about greenland and panama in that regard, then perhaps, but i would remind senator fetterman, i thought he was going to reference louisiana purchase in a different way. when we were on yesterday, people talked about greenland and 160 years ago how it was up for sale in 1867, the louisiana patches was sold in 1803, and we bought it because napoleon was a weak point in the caribbean peered but if somebody comes back, you got that 80 cheap price, we would like to buy it for more. we are not going to sell 40% of the country to someone who wants to pay the french more or the french is not going to renege on this. these things -- i hear the president and i understand what he is doing, and i hope he gets what he wants, which ultimately are better terms for the u.s.,

better security for the u.s., and if this is the talk that gets us there, so be it. i am like aoc and john fetterman. lets tony down a little bit, let him get to office, and -- >> greg: this is interesting, kennedy. january 6th, the democrats applauding themselves -- yes, for peaceful to hitler. oh, look how nice we are. we are approving of the election. we are validating it -- to hitler. it makes no sense. >> kennedy: nothing makes any sense. but i think that speaks to harold's point about the way that john fetterman is talking to american voters. because you have entirely scrambled coalitions -- and i don't think a lot of people who voted for trump voted for him because now they are magically republicans. i think you have people who are disaffected, who are forgotten, who have been left out of the entire process, and they finally

have someone who is speaking to them about ideas and not just trying to divide them which has gotten very old and very boring, so that's exactly what john fetterman and aoc are going to do. they are going to try and piggyback off of this new political trend because they both want to be president. they both want to lead their party. i'm glad they are kind of at each other's throats because they show the division that is happening in the democrat party, and i also very happy that people are freaking out over donald trump because it just goes to show that they are terrified how powerful the presidency has become, and i don't mean the president, i mean the presidency itself, because we have not had a president for four years, but we have had an incredibly powerful anonymous consortium of people who are running the country into the ground. so maybe now is a good time for those legislators to rebalance the constitution and take back some of the power that they have abdicated over the years to joe biden's little committee.

♪ ♪ >> harold: fox news alert. it is hell on earth in southern california. catastrophic california wildfires reducing entire streets to ash. and in a disturbing development, the water to put all those planes could be running out. the l.a. department of power and water seal urging residents to "really conserve water." after all of the city's tanks ran out. let's go to matt finn live from pacific palisades. matt, what can you tell us now? >> harold come i am standing on the famed sunset boulevard that

goes right through downtown pacific palisades, and there are fires all around us right now. you can see this large retail plaza burning in front of our eyes. we saw a fire sparked in here a couple hour ago. fire crews showed up and tried to put it out and they have since moved on so we are watching this slowly burned to the ground. scenarios like this are happening all around the palisades right now. you look off to the distance in your right, you can see the thick, black, suffocating smoke still engulfing this town, and we have seen residents' homes burning today. you are talking 24 hours plus after this fire originally started, and there are still fires all over. to my right here, as you look at this rubble, this area of town is the more residential area. we did a quick tour earlier today, and it wasn't just house after house, it was row after row, neighborhood after neighborhood, hundreds and hundreds of homes destroyed. the palisades has very high end

mega-mansions but also your every day, average size home. this is a very family oriented community. it is devastating to think of what the rebuilding process will be like. people were asking me, concerned about the charter high school. we saw portions of that burning earlier today. we have been told that charter schools, elementary schools, high schools have burned to the ground here, so the scale of the devastation here is just catastrophic. apocalyptic is a word that is used, often times describes disasters like this but it certainly applies to the pacific palisades and the winds, the winds continue right now. last night i was here, red-hot flames engulfed the palisades. we are getting hit with red-hot embers and the winds were carrying those embers and spreading those fires and here we are a day later and that is still happening in the palisades. back to you guys. >> harold: before i flip it, i know exactly where you are, that corner. let me ask a question. you talk about the winds. are the winds shifting by the hour come every 30 minutes, two

hours? one side more than the other side seems windier, maybe that is just the camera angle. >> yeah, harold, the winds are constant shifting. l.a. fire told me they are sporadic. absolutely. last night red-hot flames going from one angle to the next, one direction to another. that is happening right now. don't be deceived. fortunately there are businesses that have survived and you see standing structures around me. if you drove in any direction right here, your heart would sink to be able to see the homes and the other structures that are destroyed. it is sporadic and there are pockets of structures that survive, but large areas of devastation. >> harold: let me go to kennedy now. >> kennedy: matt, i am looking at you and i gasped when i saw that shot. that used to be a aaa. there was a ralph's to your left right behind you. ralph's is a southern california grocery store. i was watching your reporting last night. we were all on the edge of our

seats just trying to figure out what could be happening. is there more of a fire presence there today? we were hearing some of the reporters talk about a lack of fire response may be because they didn't have water. does it feel like there is more fire personnel there today? >> we do see fire personnel. they were trying to put out this -- we will show you this retail plaza pedestal on fire. the fire crews were trained to put this out a bit earlier, but then they left, so i'm not entirely sure what their strategy is or why they stepped away from this particular unit. perhaps there was something more pressing. we do see fire crews in and around the area, kennedy, but the black smoke plumes, they just appear out of nowhere, so it is kind of like wacko mall. these fire crews are driving around tried to put out the most pressing fire, kennedy. >> harold: dana? >> dana: matt, what does the evening tonight look like? what have you learned about what we can expect? we waited until this morning

when the sun came up so we could see the damage. what do you think tonight will bring? >> it seems like tonight will be awfully similar, dana, the winds are still strong and caring embers, flames, seeing fires jump around. that has been going on all day. last night when i was standing here we saw the red-hot flames rip across large portions of this area, the red-hot embers being carried in the wind, and based on my two cents on the ground, it seems that is likely going to continue tonight, dana. >> harold: jesse watters? >> jesse: matt, reports of two people dead, i expect that to go up, but how is the evacuation? what kind of warnings were given? alerts? was it orderly? it does look difficult to get in and out of some of those neighborhoods. >> kennedy can tell you, the palisades is a few ways in, a few ways out. mostly a ghost town right now. many people seem to have heeded

the evacuations. here in southern california, we were warned yesterday if not the day before about the potential for this happening. there was that red flag warning given to us. the mayor and local authorities warranted both the intense winds we are experiencing, also it's been extremely extreme he dry here. we have not had measurable rain since last spring so it was the perfect recipe for this kind of disaster to happen. many people were informed about the possibility of this happening. as far as the evacuations, you have seen the video and heard reports of people abandoning their cars but in general i would say most people heeded the evacuations. and many of these scenarios, a lot of people don't, and it is up to the individual, jesse. >> harold: well, matt, thank you, continue to stay safe. greg come i'm sorry, forgive me. >> greg: thanks, harold. now i know how you really feel. i have a question about the evacuation. you have all of these people leaving, where are they going? and if it is going to get worst,

i mentioned this in the a block, if people want to help other people by offering space in their homes, is there an avenue for that? >> well, you know, that's a great question, greg peered i thought it myself, where do you go? many of us are close to our mother or father or children or loved ones. i cannot tell you where all of these individuals decided to go. i know some people went to hotels. there is a place downtown called the dream center in los angeles, charitable organization open to anyone who needs shelter, and we are seeing a lot of organizations beginning to open their doors, greg, but it is a worst-case scenario. our own leslie marshall contributor, she has been on our air saying i'm not near my loved ones. she has children out here. she ended up going to a hotel. i think it is an individual basis, greg. it is one of those things you don't want to think about. when push comes to shove, perhaps you have your things in order and go. >> greg: do they know when the mayor is coming back? >> dana: she's back. >> i don't have tabs on the mayor. >> harold: greg come i didn't mean to cut -- >> greg: it's too late,

[laughter] joe biden also goes on to claim that he warns donald trump to not settle scores. we all know what trump said after that. trump even praised the biden economy peered do you believe trump praised the biden economy? bidenomics, did a hell of a job with that. >> dana: the unemployment rate is low. i do think president trump loves banners, he likes to be polite and wants to pay a compliment, so he is looking for something, what can i say? is there something i can say here? i do think the lame duck portion of this presidency has been very strange. i believe his people have kept him from doing more interviews because i believe he has declined even more in the last couple of months, even since -- certainly from the debate until now. he is very defiant in saying

that he could have won. and this goes again to something that chuck schumer, he does the interviews on sunday, he said joe biden made the right decision for himself and for the party. no, joe biden doesn't believe that. joe biden believes he could have won. he believes it was wrong he was pushed out. i mentioned "positive america," let me mention one more time, they said biden's own internal point had him losing 400 electoral votes. this revisionist history that they are trying, i don't think it is going to work and i'm not sure all of the things that president trump and his team will find when they get there. >> jesse: greg, can you believe he said i don't know if i would have lasted for years, but how selfish -- >> dana: take your money. >> greg: he puts pulliam in lame duck, to make more accurate, replace the d with a f. an ungrateful old who's who should never have been president, period.
