done. it's not just one thing it's everything. >> trace: a compendium of things and that's the case. thank you for your expertise steve. thank you sir. and studio city on the right hand of your screen there and has burned well over 18,000 acres now and of course you have the eaton fire in the pasadena area and with thousands, more than a thousand homes in the palisades. that could be as many said the most devastating fire in the history of los angeles. thank you for watching breaking news coverage on this expanded addition of america's late news i'm trace gallagher in los angeles over to bill now.
9:31 pm
>> thank you for joining us in los angeles at this hour as we have a handful of these fires burning in the southland with over a thousand structures destroyed and five people dead so far they are looking for potential bodies out there. 0% containment all across the board with the wildfires including a new one which broke out a couple of hours ago here's a live look as it started in the hollywood hills area causing mass evacuations but that fire spotted ahead of itself to the northern side and the san fernando valley here's a live shot and studio city, california, where moments ago we were watching a live helicopter feed of at least one structure that caught on fire and appeared to completely collapse what we've seen happen with the fires during the wind event is these
9:32 pm
embers get caught in the wind and they do what's called spotting ahead of itself going hundreds of yards to a mile ahead of itself and start a fire in a completely new area. so what were watching in studio city is on the other side of the hill from hollywood hills earlier tonight. at least one structure we saw earlier caught on fire and as we saw the fire we saw it racing uphill in fire burns faster uphill and when there is wind it doesn't help but that fire essentially started off by itself in the middle of nowhere appearing to be on the other side of the sun set fire. and as to pacific palisades fire which is having destroyed thousands of structures and is uncontained and it displaced tens of thousands that's where our correspondent joins us live from tonight and i would say
9:33 pm
good evening to you but unfortunately it's not a good evening for the folks out there. yet another home burning. >> for sure bill and that's what's been described for first responders there and you can see them going this way and just trying to do something with what resources they have and the high wind picking back up and small little fire and with the apartment complex. it's up in flames and destroyed. the same story up and down every single block here in the pacific palisades memory after memory. with the embers coming off the top of that building. and just making sure they should
9:34 pm
be evacuated and at night these fires and it's very disorienting out there and area like the pacific palisades it's one way in and one way out. >> bill: quick question you been out there all day long what you see coming into the area. is it media, first responders or are there people to get into that area did my home make it through the night or the day. are there residents coming in trying to see if their property survived? >> they are trying to get in there and see yet the home as survived i had people reach out and ask if you could check on this house or this block but mostly it seems like it is first responders and police officers from different media groups there. >> at last check that fire over
9:35 pm
16,000 acres to put that into perspective that's bigger than manhattan island in new york city. 0% containment. as you can see behind him homes burning as we speak thank you and altadena is another area hit incredibly hard which is where christina coleman joins us live from tonight out of the eaton fire i assume you aren't seeing anything great out there tonight either. >> definitely not. it's a very devastating just taking a look behind me this house destroyed it's one of many on the street more than a thousand structures damaged or destroyed in this fire it's a deadly fire claiming five lives so far since it broke out just north of pasadena last night field by strong wind that wreaked havoc on this area and at this fire has scorched more
9:36 pm
than 10,600 acres since yesterday alone and if you just look down the street you see car after car that looks like this look at this vehicle completely burned out. several days ago you can imagine a neighbourhood full of families and kids talking to the firefighters out here it's a tight-knit community. these homes have been around for decades i'm betting during the christmas break and the holiday break the families here probably never expected for houses to be gone like they are now. more than 750 firefighting personnel working around the clock to get this under control it's at 0% containment more than 70,000 people impacted by evacuation orders in this area and again the fire continues to burn out of control. you can see behind me just a little bit there is a small fire
9:37 pm
in the debris this is what firefighters are worried about right now about embers floating around in the air that could land anywhere and as you know they could spark a large fire within seconds so lots of firefighters going through this neighbourhood checking in trying to put out hot spots checking for small fires just to make sure they can keep this area safe and as you asked of that question moments ago whether he seen people come through the area. i haven't seen any homeowners coming for this area to check on their house i think people are so concerned. i saw increase for pacific gas & electric checking if there's any gas leaks here the definitely want to make sure the area is secure as crews work to contain the fire. built? >> bill: looks like a ghost fire we heard the l.a. county sheriff confirmed today that five people have died as a result of the eaton fire and
9:38 pm
they anticipate the number to potentially go up as his deputies get in to these burned areas and assess the damage. excellent work out there under horrible circumstances thank you. and as you saw here and catastrophic damage as they had to evacuate to safety and at your those live images at a studio city one of the structures that burned a short time ago and iconic landmarks have been completely burned to the ground just rubble no weeks after that event was hit by another wildfire remembering the one that approached a campus for more and that we want to bring in a mall be city councilmember who is joining us for now more and how they are coping with the devastation thank you so much for coming on i was watching videos today of the pch area
9:39 pm
looked like a nuke went off. we are looking at homes on the ocean side as far as the eye can see that just were completely incinerated what is your reaction to what has happened in the city tonight? >> catastrophic. with east malibu and it's pretty dangerous and decimated and it just got sworn in to city council and with the franklin fire broke out in dealing with that and then a month later january eighth they've got the palisades. 23 ensues homes burned i have friends who are seniors who lost everything everybody's evacuated i have horses and rescue animals we got out and i'm not a

politician i have no idea i cannot believe the amount of destruction that our little town has endured really. i'm proud of the city of malibu the staff working around the clock with a great mayor and doug stewart other city council members were rallying around how we will help and rebuild we really need help from the government. from the agencies that govern us. we can't do it alone in my opinion again i'm new to this but i been here 17 years reasoning to teenagers here i don't how we come back from this the devastation i took a drive down carbon beaches just gone. the neighbourhood a big rock is
9:41 pm
gone i own a school for elementary kids which is spread he much gone i believe. we need help here. >> understand a handful of their iconic landmarks have been locked there's lawson's last night can you tell me what ones are gone tonight. >> i think they saved the getty villa and you've got the topanga hotel and for locals others are gone. moon shadow is gone and we had many little is a says called wiley's fish and tackle an icon called the reel in across from the historic service break it's a devastation and it's something which is just a failure i don't know how to explain it but it's heartbreaking as far as other landmarks i'm not really sure.
9:42 pm
i don't know to be honest because we get a lot of information that 11,000 acres is burned and over a certain amount or structures but as far as the nitty-gritty i don't think we have begun to get in there and understand. it's a shame because we have a lot of history in malibu is a new city but there are things we are losing. i hope we save the pier and the adamson house. i hope we save sarah retreat we just came out of franklin and i will tell you something else we had a fire in november as well. it's been one a month. i don't know if you know about the broad fire but we had that and the franklin fire and now this. it's just devastating. >> the worst fire in southern california history back in 2018 so the hits just keep
9:43 pm
