the strongest in the new union doesn't have the infrastructure to protect these people. tons of warnings, no action, not enough action. >> why was there no water in the hydrants governor? is it going to be different next time? >> it has to be. of course. >> what you going to do? >> trace: the devastation is far from being over. a knew fire breaking out tonight in west hills that's on the l.a. county ventura county line growing from 50 acres to nearly 1000 acres in just hours. marks the sixth active wildfire in l.a. county. we have team fox coverage. jeff paul in the pacific palisades as it -- as it reaches nearly 20,000 acres but 6% containment bubbly -- we begin at the newest fire in woodland hills as it rapidly expands. >> we've been on scene for a couple of hours and earlier before the sunset i was able to

walk back to the hiking path and before the sunset we were able to see the scorched-earth back there. this is considered the origin of the fire. we are not allowed back there right now because i'm being told by -- that this considered a crime scene. l.a.p.d. reports that around 4:30 p.m. they arrested a person for suspicion of arson in proximity to this fire. tonight l.a.p.d. tells me and the officer that i spoke with said that they cannot confirm that the arson arrest is directly related to the origin of the kenneth fire, just at this arson arrest happened within proximity of the fire and that person is being investigated right now. we will keep you updated on these developments. and threatened a lot of homes and among point there was a mandatory evacuation so everyone in l.a. and even ventura county on edge right now.

when a single spark or fire goes up we saw the huge evacuation line, car after car coming out of the area. for now ventura county reports that it stopped the forward progress of the fire which is good news. keep you updated trace. >> thank you. let's bring in l.a. county fire captain ... thank you both for coming on. captain to you first, we are getting a big break in the high winds so that's a good sign. what can we do or accomplish during this? >> we are having a low right now but we are still under threatening conditions so we will be under these conditions until 6:00 tomorrow. this was also only had the fire that broke out in west hills. right now this is a time were we still have many firefighters on the ground. we have over 2300 firefighters

at the palisades fire but we also have the transition -- have to transition when a fire breaks out in the surrounding area. we had a hollywood hills fire last night, west hills fire going on right now. i heard another fire breakout so we have to -- even though we are on a lawal we are still under extreme fire behaviour and we do have the potential for the winds to pick up until at least 6:00 tomorrow when we will be in these conditions still. >> trace: i'm wondering if you can give me an idea if you know anything about the kenneth fire. do you know the status of that, have you checked it on that? >> we are continuing monitoring the conditions there. as you suggested we have to adjust and switch gears and we have to adapt to the conditions. the whole southern california area is under warning and we continue to see spots of developing new fires. we had aircraft and helicopters

assist with that fire. i saw the warnings went out and then the orders have gone to the 20s now so it seems like that fire is getting better but things continue the same in the same pattern here. we have to be adaptable and we have to be able to react quick. >> trace: i wonder the new numbers are coming in, we are now at 10,000 homes both in the palisades and the eaton fire. 10,000 homes and structures destroyed. did you expect those kinds of numbers win this fire first broke out kidmak. >> i don't think anybody could've expected these numbers. i've never seen anything like this in my entire career so it's unprecedented to have 99 mile-per-hour winds. we had very erratic wind conditions. are firefighters, this came on

very quickly. we were anticipating, we were -- we knew there was going to be a wind event so we were paired for that and we are used to having santa ana conditions. we prepared for that but nothing could have prepared us for 99 mile-per-hour winds and the erratic winds all over the fire. >> trace: tell us what the plan is, what's the strategy. we have more air -- air assets going up. what's the plan for tomorrow morning? >> luckily for us we had an opportunity to make progress. we have that 6% containment. we are hoping that tonight we are going to see increasing winds but nothing from what we saw at the beginning... hopefully the winds continue to ease off a little bit and give us an opportunity to really make progress. we have the same amount of individuals on this fire who

will continue to fight here and try to save as many houses as possible. >> trace: best of luck to both of you. thank you for coming on. back to one of our reporters on the ground tonight. the national correspondent's life for us in malibu. what is it looked like there? >> it is one of the most iconic places in the country, malibu, california. i drive up to visit likely will never look the same and the big part of the reason why is because of scenes like this. we are standing what would be a normal row of homes right here with a beautiful oceanview, now destroyed by the palisades fire. you can see in the distance likely what this area looked like from the homes that were mildly burned. then as you widen out you can see the role of homes that were burned to the ground. maybe make out the wood frame, the cement foundation. the driveway we are standing on. this was just a garage door, likely have a family home that

has now been destroyed because of this fire. not only destructive but deadly. we are learning that two people were killed as a result of the palisades fire. we know they are investigating's some remains that were found further down from where were standing to determine whether are not that person died as a result of the fire. we really spent some time today driving up and down pch to take it -- taken what happened. it's just breathtaking to see whether it is a multimillion dollar home or mobile home in a mobile home park, it does not matter how wealthy you are, this fire spared nobody. one of the things working in favour of some of these residents who may be still have a home up here, we see a lot more firefighters out and about tonight. they are putting out those spot fires. the winds have died down but as you know, that can change at any moment. back to you. >> that is a sad thought as it can change at any moment. we will get back to you later in

the show. let's bring in the founder of american gravy concepts along with... and to local citizens who took matters into his own hands. he also fought other fires. his name is brandon williams and we will start with you. you were fighting your own fire and you were fighting your neighbours fire. how did it come out and what made you decide to do this? >> i was just about finished with my remodel i put millions of dollars, all my money into this home and i dealt with malibu permitting and i didn't want to deal with it again. i called two of my friends and they came with me and i brought a bunch of hoses and i fought off all of lacoste a beach malibu, hundreds of homes earned straight to my house and it was single-handedly because we just sat there and thought it. flames were at my face. we had to jump in the ocean and jump back.

it was so hot and we stop the fire. it was a miracle. and it saved the three houses on the end of the beach. >> we saw that. it was stunning to see, the video that you are showing us is the video you took of your friends. we will talk about that coming up in a moment. i want to bring you into the conversation because very few people, i was up there all day long doing the 4:00 show. the bottom line is that very few people had their homes saved and for those who didn't have brandon on their side, what's the advice to them? what you tell these people? >> every person has a loss. it's very easiest -- they get depressed. the number 1 thing is go do something. be proactive. as long as you are proactive, go help somebody else. the second thing is stop -- start working on everything now. you will figure out your pain later.

right now if you are proactive you're going to be the leader of your home and be able to go and move for the next few months through this terrible time. >> i know because you are a good man, you've been handing out food. you've been orchestrating these volunteers to make sure that people are fed, people who need it are fed. what has that entailed, what has it been part of? is it a bigger movement you are trying to get going here? >> we are not looking that far ahead amongst all this tragedy. it's amazing how we come together. we put out a call to action that we needed small donations and we will take them up to the dream center or to the pasadena convention center as well as for that we were giving over to the central kitchen. we had well over $50,000 in donations from all across the country. and we were trying to get it all distributed. we rented a van, customers started showing up with pickup trucks. we still didn't have enough space with pallets of -- pallets of products.

right now we've got at least ten to 15 truckloads in front of the restaurant and we've had at least 100 volunteers from around , in addition to the fact that people have come down who have been evacuated. they parked in our parking lot and we gave them free meals and they help doubt. so that is a positive story in the midst of all this. >> it was an outpouring got a lot of people said if it happened california, the hurricane happened in texas you had trucks lined up and people say i wonder if it -- if this would happen in california and it turns out they are. that's a good sign. is there an address, is there something we can put on the web page to get people going in the right direction? >> they're looking for shoes, pets -- pet food. you can send any of those products 216600 pacific coast highway. we will take it from there.

>> i want to put up more of those pictures. are you watching now, are you thinking that you might be able to help other people? what's the plan going forward or have you saved your house and saved a couple of the houses and you think you're done. >> as soon as i got finished fighting it for two days i found out there was the fire in the kenyan. i'm a developer so i had other properties over there. i went straight there and started dousing and called five of my friends. my friend has a house and the point doom area that backs up to this new fire happening and i said call me. at this point i'm going full firemen and trying to help out wherever i can. >> you see some of this video that we are playing of yours and i don't know if you can see it right here but it's great in the comments, oh, my god, this thing looks bad. >> in the ups smac looks like a

to 4:00 p.m. show covering the wildfires and we got into the very heart of pacific palisades, getting the first good look at the business district. >> we're taking a tour through the business area of pacific palisades. this is kind of the city centre if you will. you are looking at the supermarket totally destroyed and amazingly the hardware store across the street is untouched. you walk over here to the sunset boulevard that runs right through pacific palisades across the street there was a mall. you had nail salons, beauty parlours, frame shops, all totally gone as you go down the entire blog. over here on the other side is a church and some of it is still standing, a lot of it is destroyed. it's interesting as you look across the street, the buildings in this business district that fared the worst are apparently closest to the fire station. >> trace: as we continue our coverage with christina coleman who is like for us and

pacific palisades. >> the destruction here just absolutely devastating. go ahead and take a look behind me, this is the big giant shopping area here in the pacific palisades and it's just awful. you can see all the crumbled metal, the walls that have been -- that have fallen to the ground when the blaze swept through here, also take a look at the aerial view of this destruction. this video was captured from a zone, take a look at that. that is just absolutely awful. at least 5300 structures have been destroyed by this fire. it has burned more than 19,000 acres of land. that's larger than the size of manhattan. so many roads are blocked off to keep folks away from all this crumbling debris. it's very dangerous especially at night when it's hard to see.

really, one of those things wear as families are kind of coming back and seeing the devastation, we've got susan right now. we just played your interview, i'm not sure if you can hear me, it was spot on. the kid was heartrending and absolutely -- it was amazing. tell us about that. >> honestly daisy is a friend of mine. i've known her for a few years. i had seen photos of them but we started to communicate earlier today and she is staying in downtown los angeles and says it will -- we are going to come back into the neighbourhood because my son is crying, he's bereft but he really wants to see his home. she believes her younger son lucas wasn't really grasping the concept but she agreed and frankly that was her first time to see it.

she had seen video and photos that were taken by a family member but it was her first time to see it with her own eyes. we got them past the barricade and they pulled up. i was surprised, she was surprised, we were bracing for what the kids were going to do. the children tumbled out of the car, they were holding the only toys they have left and wandered into the property. they go through the gate and they are walking around and making comments. there is dad's stationary exercise bike and mom has 12 and then he showed me wear his bedroom was, they shared a bedroom in the corner of the house and he's very talkative and his mom confirm that that he is quite talkative.

she was surprised that he didn't go further. she says he has a lot to say so he's quite charming. even afterwards when i was talking to him not on camera he was telling me why that 3d printer was so important to him and he got teary-eyed when he told me about it. i said i'm not sure i understand, why do you want a 3d printer. his dad said he wants to design his own toys. he six and a half and he's already thinking like that so that was difficult for him. but i will say it didn't take long at all before someone called our desk and said we want to help. we want to get this kid a 3d printer. >> trace: you did yeoman's work on that, thank you for coming. more stories of local residents fighting for themselves and their neighbours. in fact our next guest documented his experience. the shocking moments caught on camera and he joins us live on

and he brought you with him. we're gonna play the video that right now while you were talking. what was the story? >> i was going up to document the fires so as i was walking up i see... he's like tanner what's up and i'm just walking at the time. i'm like i'm going to document the fires a couple other friends i was like would you want to come up and help me document what's going on and he's like sure and i'm like okay i know -- i hope you know what you are getting yourself into. i went up there on top of the canyon and we were watching the flames and as they got close i was like your houses down the road. this is getting too close, it's not good. we went down the air -- there. >> you live in berlin half the

year, you live in the pacific palisades. your family lost two of their three homes. that's cut to be devastating and you said your parents were bound and determined to stay. >> absolutely. i'm a third-generation pacific palisade in and my mother even hours before said not in my 71 years has the fire ever gone to the palisades village. they were planning on staying and it was before about 7:00 when my family, my siblings and our group chat, we had to call 911 to get my mom and dad out. they lost power so they've notoriously had terrible cell reception but they were the last few and they were escorted out. >> your parents also own a burger shop. we talk about that in a minute. a very famous burger shop. here's a video of you trying to

save your home and your neighbours home. at least for a time that you thought you could watch. tell me what you were thinking. >> that's down the street from. i went down to my neighbours house and what you see is a line of cars coming down the street. none of that exists right now. there were kids coming from the school, screaming and crying. i try to help this lady, what upset me about that video was that i went to a police man and i said can you help her, she's got three bags and two dogs and the policeman was like we are here to help with the traffic. other neighbours helped her get into a car and she had nowhere to go. there was no plan for traffic or the elderly. no plan for animals. it's tragic. >> did you have a plan to get out if you were in their? you guys went inside the house. >> always had several escape routes planned in the back of my head.

i was looking at different pictures. i knew the embers were coming in and they would like the brush on fire but most of the fire was to the north of us and the routes were all south so i knew... so from the wisdom from them i knew how to navigate the situation and being on the east side of the fire with the window my back i knew that we could also go to the east side if we needed to to get out of the danger but it was really intense regardless. >> trace: what does everybody thing about the response. >> we are very touched. the thing with the palisades. if you know what you know it. the fourth of july parades, it is a small town in the middle of a vast los angeles metropolitan area and it is unique in that capacity. we are very touched by the

outpouring of love and support. is still standing and it feels like when you see things like the palisades theatre and you see the library and you see these places burning, but if the beachside cafe is there it's a small silver lining. >> trace: michael you did the response for the first responders was not as robust as you had hoped. >> i'm a whistle-blower attorney and i know in -- when you get down to negligence and duty of care, there are things that should have been in place. there were people in those cars, they were just raving about the poor planning. they were afraid for their lives. after that maybe 30 seconds that's when you hear the explosions coming from houses blowing up. it's pretty tragic. we had a water system.

left at home in the palisades to move to florida because of the politics but this home was on galloway street right in the pacific palisades. so many of my friends, i can't tell you how many have lost their homes. a very dear friend of mine and his family home is gone. when i hear people say they can just rebuild, how do you rebuild years and generations of memories, of photo albums. how do you rebuild your kids? it so emotional for me, how do you rebuild your kids projects that they brought home, their yearbooks, how do you rebuild this, money can't buy the stuff back and this was a failure of leadership. we have covered so many natural disasters. how -- have you ever seen anything this bad? of covered so many wildfires my

pacific palisades. we begin with with the kenna fire in wu woodland hills, matt what are you seeing? >> reporter: this six affective fire in l.a. county. some good news as evacuation orders were listed -- and lifted that area. but this fire did explode earlier today. we did walk up to the trail behind us and saw the scorched earth up there. very brave fireman on foot battling the fires those are the people who should be credited from any structures being kept untouched today. the area here is a crime scene actually as we aren't allowed back there with l.a.p.d. officer telling me it's a crime scene because a person was arrested around 4:30 on suspicion of arson. l.a.p.d. has clarified however to me that they do not have a direct link right now between

taken place over the past few days just take a look behind me as you can see how awful this looks this is the palisades village and area normally filled with families where people go to shop and eat and hang out with friends and loved ones. now it's been reduced to rubble. it's absolutely devastating as we seem firefighters drive it through this area checking for hot spots they want to make sure there's no smoldering embers they want to get the fire under control and take a look at this here's the aerial view of the destruction i keep showing but it just shows an impact that the fire has had so widespread all of the damage so extensive in this area showing how the fire has really leveled the community. it's burned around 20,000 acres since starting tuesday only 6% contained destroying more than 53 -- 5300 structures including homes and small businesses so much impacted by the fire and
