1,000 acres and then there is the eaton fire that's out in pasadena and that's taking out more than 5,000 structures and caused two deaths. and that's covered more than 13,000 acres. >> it's a disaster. it's armageddon. i have never seen anything like this in my life. >> we are so heart broken for our neighborhoods. these are newlyweds, just bought this home six months ago. >> this is honestly probably the worst i have ever seen it. we just don't have enough personnel and what not to contain this one. >> it's not a war zone it's just a tragedy. >> laura: those poor people. and for those whose homes did not burn down, they are at risk of being looted. more than 20 people have been arrested so far tore doing the unthinkable during a time of such horrific tragedy things got son bad local curfew. >> tonight at 6:00 p.m. we are not screwing around with

this. we don't want anyone taking advantage of our residents that have already been victimize. >> laura: they don't put up that w. that nonsense in florida. this is the headline it "l.a. times." strong winds this week ventura county as major risk of fires and now what is it four or so days later the fires that were protected have killed 11 and destroyed more than 10,000 homes businesses and schools. we have seen the video. they are dazed. confused many are furious with former officials asking why given the wind warning and the dry conditions that newsom and karen bass did not preposition sufficient fire fighting resources in the most at risk areas. now, obviously the fire department budget cuts did not help and the dim witnessed dei hires are way out of their

other day it looked like dresden. nothing left. >> laura: for those of us watching this from afar. try to convey to us the feeling of seeing your home, your neighbor's homes, and the community there at such loss. >> i mean, it's -- it's tragic. it makes you really sad. i was actually, you know, there are neighbors i have that i was actually looking at them. i felt worse for them than i did for myself. i look at a strake mixture of sadness and elation in a sense that i'm just -- i count my blessing, you know, no matter what. these are things. and they may or may not be replaceable but they are only things. we are still here. i just kind of look at it almost in a weird kind of way.

be tragic with these winds. any fire starts? >> sure. >> do you believe in what you know so far anything going to happen like this? cope about a situation come up. some people asleep on the job. mainly our leaders there. >> that's something they have to live with. and but that's something the community has to live with and it's really sad. i have many friends that are looking for a place to put a roof over their heads. kids and, you know, they are traumatized. someone should answer for it. but we'll see.

i think we know who the culprits are in fact, my son was just -- he is a member of the volunteer fire brigade. he interfaces between l.a. county fire and people and they assist them where they can during and after the blaze. the residents caught an arsonist up there and the guy was all tooled up with fire gear and equipment and stuff like that and ready to go. and he had been lighting fires. they corralled the guy and corralled him and gave him to the police. >> laura: yeah. apparently. >> looking for these conditions. >> laura: apparently, mel, that individual was never charged, it's a very confusing set of facts because he whereas reportedly trying to light things on fire but it's not the fires it all seems bizarre. they have not ruled out that arson could have started the

first fire. there is obviously still investigating this. at the same time, mel, there are numerous complaints you alluded to that the fire hydrants did not have water or water pressure and the l.a. fire chief herself reacted. >> my on this when the firefighter comes up to a hydrant, we expect there is going to be water. we don't control the water fly. our firefighters are there to protect lives and property and to make sure that we are properly trained and equipped. that's my position on this. if there is no water, i don't know how the water gets to the hydrants. >> laura: mel, reaction to that? >> >> i know they were messing with the water. letting reserves go for one reason or another. they have been doing that for a while. california has a lot of problems

sort of baffle the mind as far as why they do things and then in the events like this. you sort of look is it on purpose? which it's an insane thing to think. one begins to ponder whether or not there is a purpose in mind. what could it be? do they want the state empty? i don't know. >> laura: mel, there is already talk and we played a couple of soundbites of reimagining the way rebuilding occurs and obviously there is a great need for high density housing in california and across the country. already hearing. goodbye single family homes high density housing. yeah, yeah. pretty scary and take decades to do that, too.

days before he returns to office. donald trump the first president to be sentenced on felony conviction: the first convicted felon turned president when he is inaugurated in just 10 days. he still is going to take the oath of office for the first time in u.s. history as a convicted felon. >> laura: judge juan merchan remained a hero of the far left today, sentencing president trump to an unconditional discharge in his new york trial, which means trump is going to face no jail time, fines or probation. stupid. now, a rank partisan whose jury instructions gave no specific guidance on the predicate crime alleged, merchan must know he is going to be overturned here. but he was a man on a despicable selfish mission. >> it has been tremendous set back for new york and the new york court system. this has been a weaponization of government. they call it lawfare. never happened to any extent like this, but never happened in

delivered our verdict on november 5th. >> laura: sol, you say this case should be reversed on appeal. specifically give us the thumbnail on that. >> well, let me begin by saying i consider this the most nakedly political misuse and abuse of the criminal justice system in american history. and all of our thoughts about that, all commentary should go through that lens. this case as we all know never would have been brought in new york on these facts against any other -- any other person and in light of that, these pias comments today by the prosecutor and the judge about the rule of law are a joke. in terms of possible grounds for overturning the conviction. where do you start? i think one of the areas you start is that very important in terms of constitutional law is

the question of presidential immunity as we talked about before on this show, bragg made the decision. he didn't have to call former advisers to president trump and get their testimony. this was mentioned in the closing argument. that's a problem under the supreme court's immunity decision. and the trump lawyers tried to litigate that issue. the supreme court hadn't ruled yet but they wanted to litigate that issue before it went to the jury and the judge wouldn't let them do it. so i think that's a powerful potential ground but there are many others. >> mike, do you agree that if there's -- just a sliver of impartiality left in our justice system, this will be overturned on appeal? >> there's no question this case is going to get overturned on appeal for many different reasons. sol was talking about presidential immunity as one of

the key ones but also the fact they didn't even -- this judge did not tell the jury that they had to unanimously agree on what the underlying crime was that somehow turned this bookkeeping dismeerp into 34 felonies against the president. merchan didn't sentence the president after 34 felonies. that tells you all you need to know lawfare and election interference. >> laura: sol, on the supreme court decision yesterday, where you had the liberal justices and the chief and amy coney barrett saying we're not going to get involved now, and then you had, you know, the four conservatives. kavanaugh, alito, thomas and gorsuch, say no, no, essentially a matter of national importance, they thought it was important to step in even in interlog tore basis. were you surprised by that vote?

>> i wasn't surprised by the result. i was a little surprised that it was close. keep in mind, all they wanted to do, the four dissenters was to hear the case. they thought that the motion should be heard. not necessarily what they would decide. but, one of the things chief justice roberts who wrote the opinion made it clear was that this would -- one of the reasons they weren't intervening is because they took judge merchan at his word, always a dangerous thing that there would be, you know, he would be unconditionally discharged, president trump, would not -- and would not go to jail. they pointed out that he still has the appellate process. >> laura: mike, real quick. >> sorry, go ahead. >> laura: let's get mike on that real fast. i think it's a travesty. this whole thing should have been thrown out. it was a sham and should have ended with the supreme court. if they are worried about their credibility. they should have ended it.
