>> griff jenkins joins us from the pacific palisades now. griff. reporter: good morning, charlie rachel and will and los will be dealing like the apocalyptic image to come let's catch you up the death toll is rising to 16 and palisades fire, main fire only 11% contained some 23,000 plus acres have been destroyed. try to put that in perspective central park there in new york is 843 acres. so you're talking about a size more than 25 times central park. there's some 5300 plus homes and buildings like the one behind me have been destroyed other fire we're watching the eaton fire 15% contained more than 14,000 acres destroyed. but on the ground and in the sky, firefighters continue to battle take a look. at the footage of the planes

extinguish devastating california wildfires as the death toll is risen now to 16 fox weather correspondent marissa is in santa monica. good morning marissa. >> good morning rachel. the palisades fire broke out on tuesday morning, and less than a week later it has devoured 23,000 acres and is also a part of the death toll that you mentioned the palisades and eaton fire contradicting to the number of 16 a lot of tragedy, heartbreak and certainly a lot of frustration. we're here in santa monica just to set the scene quickly we're behind san and national guard brought in later in the week last week, and they've been standing guard making sure people don't enter into the neighborhoods. you go further into santa monica, anal this would take you to the palisades all still completely blocked off they brought in the high visibility wire to also keep people out. it has been such a long journey, in fact, friday into saturday morning, we had the video of when our crew was a toibl get

into mandeville canyon and right along the frontlines you had 24 aircrafts that were dumping retardant and water, consistently and this is one of the reasons that fire crews were able to get such a handle on that significant flare-up that did expand evacuation orders into encino as well as mandeville canyon and as well as brentwood those expansions they did widen but the control of that fire was significant and they did a great job and actually protecting more homes. they got it under control, in fact, into the overnight hours so saturday into sunday this morning, they were running couple of nighttime flights to also control and drop some water control the flames. so the palisades fire at this point has 11% containment. we know that damage that it's done and because of the work also in some of the rugged terrain we were out watching firefighters we have video of that as well. firefighters that were clearing some of the brush. there's a lot of very dry brush out here and because of just a few years ago, where we have a

very plenty of the wet season where we got a lot of rain, well everything grew significantly but because we're off to one of the driest starts to the winter season, at least a top five start, everything is dried out and the winds are gusty anywhere for 20 to 30 miles per hour that we've seen through the overnight hours and because of that, we have to monitor the flames. the destruction is very evident through the palisades community i have spoken to so many evacuees some lost their homes others trying to get back in and challenge to do that especially because of these road blocks which also by the way are keeping a lot of those looters out. so there's just a lot going on a lot of layers to the story that we are continuing to cover. rachel charlie, will back to you. will: thanks so much. good stuff thank you so much. you heard marissa mention the winds an exacerbating factor something that can cause the fires -- because it knocks down powerlines. and then once the fire started it just -- it is the gasoline that just

spreads those fires so let's do this. talk a little bit about the santa ana winds you're hearing that adam is at the wall with us, and he can help us understand -- qhar the santa ana winds i mentioned this earlier bret baier did on "special report" i found it instructive help us understand what's happening in southern california tell us about the santa ana winds which don't start in california. >> no they don't in the middle one jump on back. but as we see a repeat there there's a big high pressure system over the winter sits over the desert you're talking about nevada, already really dry type of air. it runs to the low pressure system that is off the coast of california. and that's when it starts to run over the mountains so you're talking about already dry air when you see that quick change in elevation it compressing air that heats it up so all of the speeds it up. so all of a sudden you're talking about almost a blow drier and then even as you get closer to the coast, you start to get in the canyon and that's similar to just step in between buildings right. that wind starts to get funneled

and you're really talking about warm, dry air that's blowing on top of the fires that's going to spread this really rapidly. will: it coming up out of the high desert already hot air, it drops down into a lower pressure. in the meantime running through mountains getting more dry, less humid, it picks up speed -- dries out continually you're looking at hurricane force winds this is a good example of where the palisades would sit in between the canyons. adam: you're talking about ring out this air so any moisture that was in it at all is completely gone, the winds don't always get up to 70, 80 miles per hour but pretty -- consistently you're talking 40, 50, 60. so it's just a factor that's going drive these fires what happened here over the last week was the high pressure system and low pressure system were closer together and you get the tight

gradient. >> these are the hills mountains that are on fire towns down in here and burns down in there. catches the town you talked about it doesn't always happen but it does more in the winter. >> that is set up where the high pressure system sits over the desert and funnel all of that air down to southern california. will: so as a a little bit of a cheat sheet how does this happen and what do the santa man winds cause the fire and make it hard to fight the fires? they can spread embers and they ignite new fires as they spread there's a -- it can almost a overlay because there's a hill on fire and just imagine wind running through that. adam: yes it pushes fires but embers up in the air and put it two miles down wingsd and that's why the fire jumps rapidly you think why is fire so far those embers get carried by the wind. will: it is approaching the 101 and 405 highways but wind can carry those embers over the highway and start a new fire on the other side exacerbating

not intentionally but somehow survived fires but were left behind. >> there's definitely been a shift. i've been doing this since tuesday when the fires first broke out , and originally it was people evacuating, fleeing their, you know, animal rescue that was burning down their ranch that was burning down. it's been a shift. and now we're starting to see some stray animals we took in a dog that was run down the street had broken leg -- we did emergency surgery yesterday and fixed the leg the dog is going to be fine now we have to try to find the owner. we've had our first yesterday we had our first smoke inhalation case, so yeah there's a shift. we're seeing more animals that are showing up that need veterinarian care, and you know, the beautiful thing is we have a wonderful support staff at our

veterinary hospital in molina del rey and we're going to start seeing a lot more patients there that need help from the fire and we're going to do it all for free. so you know, anybody that has a pet that has been evacuated, if they need medical care, we've had some patients that come in who they forgot to bring their pets medication. and so they come in to us say we forgot the pet's medication we can get the medication for you. you know, i want the people of l.a. to know that you're fully supported -- our hospital in marina del rey will do everything you need and veterinary hospitals are opening up as well so please get your -- get your pet the care they need after evacuation. >> wow doctor annie i love this story, and just the capacity of animals to bring everyone together. everyone is the most bipartisan issue there is -- pets. we love them, and you're doing such a great thing. thank you so much for joining us today. >> thank you.
