out be on the trees there's a fire while and environment working they are looking for the smoldering fires that continue to impose a threat. when you look at this overall picture here it is very much a war zone. it looks like the scenes i have seen in ukraine, and iraq when bombs, big bombs fell. that's why we heard the officials talking about the residents who want so desperately to come back that it is not safe for them to come back. that is the situation on the ground here as a result of the palisades fire now believed to be 11% contained. or than 14000 acres have been destroyed for perspective that's more than 25 times the size of new york's central park. the other fire there are watching the eaton is 15% contained has gone through a lot of acres as well. i want to show you some video i

want to show of the planes dropping fire retardant the red fire retardant along the ridge. that is in the mandeville canyon area they are trying to simply protect to those areas. they want those areas to keep from having the brush come down the canyon and into these in densely populated areas. places like brentwood which is very much at risk this hour. i want to play one soundbite for you. we've heard a lot from people but it's really these residents. this woman lives here and pacific palisades witnessed the devastation here. take a listen to what she had to say. >> i mean, i have never seen anything. fires were this close to cars, people left their cars on palisades drive, burning up the hillside the palm trees, everything is going the wind and the firemen are great, but they can only do so much. >> back out here you can see one of the firemen has gotten on top of this structure looking through the rubble.

i know they have been not only looking to put smolders out and you can see a little bit of smoke smoldering where he is shoveling. they want those to be entirely extinguished. particularly as we officials talk about the winds expected to start picking up out here. they're making sure the utilities have been shut off and there aren't additional risks to the area is going to be certainly days if not weeks before they can let resident in here because of the treacherous conditions that remain. eric: you mentioned that wind gusts expects episode 5 miles per hour you'll see the fire for fear it is going to grow it could potentially jump the 405. evacuation orders for brentwood right now in the center with its prprice collection. we've got vice president kamala harris lives there many of the celebrities and others that's exclusive neighborhood. they are fears these fires could spread even more?

as you said the palisades is only 11% contained. >> that is right. you put your finger on a really important point that's with the what theofficials worry about. but we are in the pacific palisades, the pacific's ocean is this way to mite might west e this decimated everything here all the way to the ocean and decimated areas in malibu there is nowhere for the fire to go it because it was the ocean. but to my northeast particularly in that mandeville canyon near where brentwood is it that hills that continue to burn if winds accelerate that start blowing those embers and sparks is going to be very difficult. yesterday that favorable wind conditions were able to suppress the lines. but i stood in the backyard were literally flames were burning just feet from a home and mandeville canyon. as it crosses the 405 that's what officials and firefighters say is going to be big trouble. it could lead to another major

fire event. in fact, i want to take you back to that firemen you can see as i was talking about the danger of the smoldering fires, this environment brought the hose up from the while but they have dug with their shovel, realize there is enough flammable possible threats there the environment and nnow is got the hose on him putting water on that you see the smoke arising as he tries to extinguish that. you talk about the amount of firefighters needed out here and the battalion chief with l.a. county talking about some 12000 plus firefighters for more than seven states out here trying to deal with not only the present fires burning, but also the conditions that remain behind. eric: the firefighters and first responders are heroes there joined by firefighters from canada and mexico and more from across the country pouring into los angeles. griff jenkins will get back to

you throughout the hour, thank you. arthel: griff and eric, as the adroit santa ana winds picked back up the fire or weather weather alertsare in effect forh is 100 miles or so south of san francisco all the way down to that u.s./mexico border foxbusiness max and gordon is alive in malibu. what can you tell us from your perspective? >> we are taught what those winds you might be able to hear the winds in my microphone right now by the wind is starting to pick up here. we are starting to see blue skies a clearance of smoke in the malibu area. you are once again able to see all the way to santa monica and the greater los angeles area. it's truly surreal that's the only way you can describe it. you see waves of the pacific ocean crashing onto the burnt out remains of these once beautiful homes.

these multi- million-dollar homes that burnt down here in the palisades fire. now we are on the western side of the fire. these homes went up in the early hours of monday or early tuesday morning. we see that most fire activity in the last day or so. the rhyme and speaking to fire officials this morning that is been buttoned up prison preventing of the spread moving towards very, very impressive. but there been a number of issues as well with drones. around 48 drone incursions around the fire. people essentially putting up their drones wanting to get some pretty pictures, whatever.

that's a huge issue when there's drones in an area essential firefighting aircraft cannot live an instance where super scooper when that flies over the ocean to intake water and drop it over the fire was hit by a drone and its wing was damaged with that's been taking on the firefight at least until tomorrow. that's a big issue there drone team here on the ground. firefighters can call in that drone team and they will respond. but again a really big issue for firefighters as they try to battle the blaze especially people, look he lives putting up the drones and hampering the firefighting efforts. but again right here along the pacific coast highway i want to note this. again, the surreal nature of this instant is thousands, millions of people flock to every single year to drive along their convertibles this road is

only filled with fire fighters with utility vehicles with construction workers for there's a lot of traffic right now it really shows the nationwide response to this fire potential of the costliest natural disaster nations history. arthel: you're right pch on a sunday morning people are driving up and down the coast no doubt. and to your point about those homes and the scene right there how surreal it is. that's where t the once or the coveted ocean view and in particular you've seen neighborhoods and homes destroyed from one end to the other as far as your eye can see. if you could, there is no way that is great is our pictures are and cannot really, really

describe what is happening there. and then i ask you, it's a win date which is not a good thing the santa anna's are kicking back up. but if you can hear me, we are journalists but we aren't reporters we are not to be affected but we are people. i'm going to ask you, when you see that devastation knowing those were homes. it's not about an ocean view. it's not about how much those homes cost it's what was in there for those people. those are still people who have momentum lifelong mementos that perhaps are gone now. new semi people in southern california i live here. i live down the pch. you think about everyone's whose lives have been upended in your heart breaks for them. my girlfriend, one of her friends have lost a home in the

fire zone. we were able to pick up up metal cross for her and bring that out. whatever is left. this really nothing left for a lot of these folks. maybe if you are hard objects that did not burn is it. just come with me when you take a look at this, what can even salvage from something like this? photographs are not going to make it through. mementos, even fire safe safes only last for a little while before they melt down too. there's nothing left for these people. if you had anything in one of these homes, you've got nothing out. that's when the need is so great here. i think the mental trauma for a lot of folks, that is just beginning and that is going to be an issue we are going to be seen in years and decades to come. that's never going to leave these folks what they've lost and suffered through. x indeed it's a shock to the central nervous system.

mandeville canyon this is one of the neighborhoods of firefighters are actively patrolling we can see where they've done a little bit of work where they dropped the hoses. we are overlooking the canned and spectacular views nope meant no wonder people in the set up here this is right here west ridge road they're there actuale side of the canyon here. if we look over the balconies forgive the sunshine were shooting into the sun right now you can see on the hillside there's been a lot of brush clearing the lot is just dirt. i'm not absolutely sure the home owners preemptively done that on their own work this is the work of the firefighters regardless of the hotspots we have seen this morning have gone out as its run into the dirt it's a little dusty at times we can see some of the hoses dropped down in the canyon can you should trt water out ahead of the flame if you pan even further up you will notice when the first is the best visibility we have had

since tuesday when the fire broke out. we can see the pacific ocean we can see the shoreline, the pch we are overlooking into we've got to move our shot record we are overlooking into the pacific ocean over toward the pacific coast highway. also between santa monica as well as over toward pacific palisades. removing a reliable short real quick for the moment because we have, we are on a fire wrote every now and then we get traffic going through. either way today so call her derek compared to what we have seen it yesterday and the video you've been watching and looking at is out of mandeville canyon we had a significant flareup on friday into saturday morning. but because the efforts are so aggressive to tamp those flames i believe that's why today were look at a much better situation. twenty-four aircraft's covering the fire in terms of acreage we had a jump of 50 acres or so

this malt jumps we've had with this fire. you look at the overall support by air and also on the ground we encountered ourselves some of the firefighters clearing some of the brush. they've got incredible work we have to continue to watch it and see how the flames respond to the wind. this is round two of the santa ana winds we are coming out. we're heading into round three that will intensify to see each day getting stronger into wednesday. the potential for the winds of thought up to 70 but the more intense a wind will be more so the higher elevations. watch in the palisades fire from malibu to topanga canyon will be looking to see how these flames respond. for the eaton fire with a san gabriel mountains is that this should be a little more shielded from the intense wind we could be dealing with early next week. support you mentioned round three as you put it varies going to get worse the santa ana winds

eric: southern california been update the last hour the relentless wildfires are ravaging the county. the numbers, they are overwhelming. according to l.a. fire officials the palisades fire has consumed 23000 acres and 5300 structures so far. that fire is only 11% contained. the eaton fire off to the east, that's touch more than 14000 acres and destroyed more than 7000 structures. it is just under one third, 27% contained with wonder did thousand people now under evacuation orders, 87000 under evacuation warnings. that could get even worse if it does spread beyond brentwood. on these three wind driven fires are still burning across l.a. county. firefighters have made little

progress against two of the largest ones. christina: is live just north of l.a. where the eaton fire, about a quarter contain so far. hate christina. >> yes, that is right protect 27% containment they've made some progress there. also a lot of progress on the volunteering front. go ahead and take a look at this. you can see there have been thousands of people out here since wednesday, since the fire started. they are donating water print they are donating diapers. they're doing everything they can to try to help the people in need around here. a lot of people are in evacuation areas are due in part to downed trees, powerlines and gas leaks and power outages. also take a look. people are working nonstop helping out in any way they can to get back to this community. moderate to strong santa ana winds are impact today through wednesday which leads 2000 going

and the people giving back right quick i want to take you over here i know this people making donations there's also people lining up to grab shovels, whatever they can do to help clean up some of the trees that downs, the houses, all of the debris in the streets. they are working together to help clean up some of the semester try to get their community back together. a lot of good stuff coming out a lot of great people it's wonderful to see as we deal with this ongoing tragedy. all of these ongoing fires. eric: that so inspiring to see so many people there helping. christina, thank you. arthel: even when crews finally managed to douse those of flames it may not be safe for people to return thanks to the toxic debris, downed power lines, planets horrible to say but looters will bring former sheriff of los angeles county and sheriff, this morning the

current sheriff robert luna said they increase, there's lots of things i want to go over the up with increase l.a. county staffing to about 1200 personnel he said it l likely they will ad more. many of them are on 12 hour shifts which means i believe they are 12 on, 12 off. they are working incredibly hard of course they have been assigned to close to 1500 missions? if i would ask you now having been the sheriff there for four years, relate that to us in layman's terms. just how hard are these deputies working? >> i can tell you the voices i have heard from the front lines from the command post for example, deputies are working 22 hours, 23, 24 hours in the same spot without moving they are stretched beyond sin. the national guard showed up for

days too late. the fact is the department is severely understaffed because of political decisions in the board of supervisors. they wanted to fund social justice projects and take away from the sheriff's department from fire, from probation and now that you need all these first responders to respond to these things, they are very, very extremely shortstaffed. there is no relief in sight they'rethere missing thousands f personnel. arthel: there is no doubt there's some state and local policy decisions and changes that have been made prior to this disaster that have a lot of people needing to provide some answers i would imagine we will get those answers. it does not help the situation now unfortunately. but, back to the sheriff's deputies on site now the other thing they are coordinating road closures, traffic control points, roving security. they are doing welfare checks

helping with the evacuations as needed. the county is currently at approximately 105,000 residents under evacuation orders in approximately 87000 residents under evacuation orders. i'm not sure of all the numbers they are pretty get the point though a lot of people and as you well know you have got many residents who are desperate to return home to see what they can salvage. again, i once you details to te eyes of deputies how do the deputies handle those aspects of the disaster? >> as a disa the disaster is ung the flow of people as that's predictable. but, what happens though once the immediate threat seizes then the push goes in the opposite direction people want to go back understandably to see their home and see if it is still standing or if they can recover stuff and

then have the opportunist that looters trying to come in. the deputies are working like crazy and all the different checkpoints, the perimeter around the entire evacuation zone to make sure the old people going and have a lawful reason to be there be at fire personnel, first responders, the media for example. but not the opportunist the looters did show up they are there. they are doing the circles are on the entire thing trying to find an angle where they can get access. particular to the structure still saying that did not burn down but they know they are vacant because everyone was evacuated. >> is just disgusting iso- one report where one of these losers was dressed as a firefighter. they did get arrested and or stop sheriff luna did say they had several more arrests overnight. again, how do they factor into that in terms of those arrests how are they helping out? >> a curfew is a really important factor.

6:00 p.m. -- six and you're caught it 10:00 p.m. in the middle of the curfew zone they have a lawful legal mechanism to detain it right there and ascertain what is your purpose there. based on that they had to arrest just for curfew violation of itself. but doing that you are preventing additional looting. you're sending a clear strong message is not going to be tolerated. unfortunately people just want to test the system to see what they can get away with and that requires people on the lines. arthel: quickly if you are arrested for looting and put in jail, what is the likelihood you're going to stay there? >> right now with the post desk on air we have a new d.a. in charge the likelihood is really good nothing we have to contend with is bail reform movement is still alive and wellin l.a. county you have a site and release, book and release in the

curfew is a misdemeanor the odds are they'll be cited and released immediately is very strong. arthel: finally sheriff, just talk about search and rescue operation but how are the deputies assisting? >> we have our paramedics if air five the rescue platform on the big lift helicopter. they have been very busy. and in terms of people reported missing, starting to figure who did not make it out? is it going to be a recovery or it remains that's part of what's going to happen. it's getting people out but as the blazes go through it's all about evacuation getting people out don't stand and defend your home because now you're going to cause other people who have to stand and try to rescue you when you're adding to the problem of the first responders and firefighters are facing in the deputies and the police officers on the ground.
