one nfl player reading on the sidelines during the playoffs. they won by the way the eagles did. second hour of "fox & friends" starts right now. put your books down. we will take it from here. >> all right. it is 7:01 and we begin with this fox news alert. at least 24 people are dead, and more than a dozen others are reported missing as those historic wildfires wreak havoc across los angeles county. over 12,000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. >> brian: officials fear it could get worse as stronger winds are expected to return today. more than 40,000 acres already burned. including more than 23 hours from the largest fire, the palisades fire, which is still only 13% contained. and 75% of all structures are gone. >> lawrence: so today the los angeles unified school district is set to reopen most of its schools as governor gavin newsom signs an executive order centered on rebuilding.

>> you passing the blame on to other people? >> how could it be when we are doing an independent investigation. >> does the buck stop with you. >> i mean, you're governor of california, it might as well be the mayor of california. we are all in this together. we are better off when we are all better off. and we are all better off when we are working together to take care of people. >> lawrence: griff jenkins joins us live from malibu. hey, griff. >> good morning, brian, lawrence and ainsley. they are bracing here in southern california that death toll at 24. tragically they expect it could indeed rise again. we are that n. malibu. let me just show you around at the destruction. we are looking at you can see a luxury g wagon burned out. structures in the background just for miles and miles of the iconic pacific coast highway. it is charred destruction. homes, businesses, wiped out. road crews working around the clock to try and clear some of the debris that will take certainly weeks, it not months,

maybe even years to get back to it this is because this palisades fire came over the hills and burned everything in its path until it met the pacific ocean. let's talk about the threat right now. they are bracing because of the high wind warning coming. and you mentioned the containment, the two major fires, palisades 1% contained. the eaton fire 27% contained. but the national weather service issuing a pds, a particularly dangerous situation. what's that? it is red flag warnings in that pds alert is the highest level alert that the agency is capable of issuing intended to invoke the highest level of urgency to people. because, as the fire firefighters are working around the clock in the ground and the air in places like mannedville canyon where the brush fires have spread and threatening densely populated areas like brent wood where they could see more fires popping up because of these embers that are burning all across some of the

destructive areas and the new fires. this is a little bit of what the l.a. fire department captain eric scott had to say about the dangers ahead. >> it's still active. and it's so dry because of these winds, that the brush or fuel, if an ember lands on it has a 65% of ignition. so we are chasing fires. so, we're getting punched and hit and punched and hit and it's challenging for firefighters. that's why we are so thankful that we have a huge amount coming from all over the place. >> griff: while the winds won't be the 100 mile-per-hour winds. it could be gusts up to 70. and it's meeting low humidity levels from 8 to 15% which is a recipe for disaster. now, back out here. where we are. let me just tell you one thing that we just did in the last few minutes where we about a mile up the road. in the destruction. ryan o'neil, the famous actor's daughter confirming on social

media that the home that he and fare faucet who many people our age, brian, will remember, ryan o'neil, farrah fawcett's home you can see what is left. nothing but rubble. a $3 million gorgeous home looked out over the ocean. now gone. just one of thousands that were lost in all of this. finally, let me just add that when we interviewed captain scott, he talked about the dangers ahead. i asked him how the firefighters were doing. he said they're exhausted but they will continue to work around the clock to try and save lives, homes, businesses and whatever they have to do. we expect a press conference by the way at 8:00 a.m. today from l.a.'s mayor ka karen bass to se what she has to say what updates we can get, guys? >> brian: what i'm reading a lot of anger towards karen bass. you heard a lot of that, too? a lot of backlash on her, going to guana, not having a plan. cutting the budget. her fire chief comes out not to

cut the budget left us vulnerable. i mean have you heard a lot of support for her? >> >> there is certainly a lookout of finger pointing and we heard, brian, mayor bass say at a press conference a day ago this isn't the time for finger pointing but you point to obvious things like the $17 million budget cut, i asked captain scott listen is there going to be monday morning quarterbacking about additional resources needed after this and how you will address it? he said absolutely we will be doing that he said by the way, look, we are fighting with what we had. but from would have been a thousand more fire engines, they still probably couldn't have stopped what happened. but the political storm is separate from the actual weather storm and that is going to be playing out here in southern california for sure for a long time to come thank you so much. eaton fire 16 people died.

pal said 8 people died. john and jay does because they don't know who they are yet. 39 accused looting and a man accused of arson. the man caught with the blow torch and ice is saying he was illegal immigrant from mexico. and then i read a report that one person saw someone sitting on the ground, a fighter, and they thought maybe the fighter needed help and went up closer and realized the fighter was being arrested. not a real fighter. it was someone trying to loot a neighborhood dressed as a firefighter. >> lawrence: created an environment in california allows people to steal. we know what is happening in the stores. why a lot of them have been shut down when you go to gavin newsom and karen bass some of the perspective they provided the coverage of them have been political. but when you look at california look at los angeles one party rule. the people upset are the liberals in the town that said

that their leaders have not been there to support them and then plan ahead witnessing the destruction not saying they caused it but measures weren't put in place for preechings for this hang. >> brian: 100 percent of the fire fighting costs picked up for the next 180 days. joe biden promised that the question is you notice that president trump and gavin newsom have been sparring on social media and on camera ever since. i think president trump is being invited to come out i don't know what the next step is, his vice president says is he committed to helping. >> president visit california. our hearts gone out to everybody affected by the storm. i have seen videos of people where folks have lived in those homes for 25, 30, 35 years and everything is gone and whatever your political affiliation it's hard to see those images and not be heart broken for americans going through a tough time.

california, yet again today. no rain, that is the setup. no rain in the forecast and we haven't seen rain for months. the dryest on record. and then we have that setup of those incredible winds going through the valleys and canyons, drying those winds out and the fuel of all of that dry brush is just going to cause more problems. so, 13% containment for the palisades. 27% containment for eaton. but still burning out of control and this is the worst news for firefighters, really trying to get a handle on this. fire weather warning for southern california. the particularly dangerous situation for the areas that are currently burning on fire. not going to make much to spread or ignite more wildfires, unfortunately, wind alerts again, wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour through wednesday. so the worst of it really coming this afternoon, overnight today needn't tuesday and wednesday with wind gusts anywhere from 30, 40, 50, 60 miles per hour is just going to be unbelievably bad news for all of the firefighters, responders, we

we have had contact about every two weeks, short calls. and it's very difficult because his conditions are not livable. he is physically declining. he told me on a call that i would not recognize him. and i spoke with him yesterday. he called us at 5:30. i never know exactly when he will call and to be woken up by this type of call i never know what is he going to say and he was extremely frustrated. that he is still being held and he wants to come home and be with his family. he is an amazing dad. he said i feel bad for all that. of course everything i can i am a mom. this is what moms do. and i want my children to have their dad back to be part of their lives. >> ainsley: everyone watching say a prayer we can bring ryan
