>> steve: it is 7:00 here in new york city on the couch 72 degrees. outside it is currently 26. this is january 14th, 2025. welcome to "fox & friends." >> we start with a fox news alert. another fire breaks out in southern california as winds intensify overnight. and we're learning the president-elect is planning a visit to the devastated areas. a live report coming up. >> brian: plus a migrant charged for having a million dollars drug stash in emergency shelter. the far left governor calling for a sweep. is it too little too late? >> lawrence: hunter headache, a scathing report says that the first son earned millions off his last name. the growing criticism of biden's unprecedented pardon. >> steve: so the second hour of "fox & friends" for this tuesday starts right now. >> lawrence: a fox news alert. president-elect trump is making plans to visit l.a. so he can see the devastation from the

wildfires firsthand. >> brian: meanwhile strong winds continue to fan the flames, threatening new areas as folks across the region are warned to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. >> ainsley: griff jenkins is live in malibu with the latest for us. griff? >> griff: good morning, guys. it's 4:00 a.m. here on the west coast. and that is the hour that the officials said the red flag warnings, could reach up to 70 miles per hour will start to begin. but already we have a new fire. the auto fire blazing an hour north of us. let me take you to that video. >> this is a fast-moving, wind-driven brush fire. the firefighters battling in helicopters from the sky to put this down. this is happening in the santa clara riverbed between the cities of ventura and oxnard, california. we are told they are making progress and slowing its forward movement. but it is all within this gigantic particularly dangerous situation area.

that stretches all the way from where they are down here where we have the two big fires pal said fire and eaton fire at 14 and 33% contained. respectfully. now, this is happening. as areas like ethan and eaton fire is still being evacuated. you guys were able to speak in the last hour with residents in altadena, that area is where 16 of the 24 deaths occurred. but your residents that you spoke to, their home actually survived. here's some of what they had to say. >> tore through the backyard like a flame thrower. ripped out the garage and all our memories. everything we put in the garage to protect it from the wind storm was destroyed. >> there was no internet. no cell. the only way i heard from mark was he managed to get a satellite sos that he was trying to reach emergency services. saying if we could just have one fire truck here there are houses

on the road that could be saved. >> griff: they were among the lucky ones. meanwhile fox news learning and confirming that president-elect trump will visit the fire ravaged areas out here in los angeles. we don't have a time or a date. we don't know if it will be before or after the inauguration. but it will certainly be interesting by all means because of the political words that have been trade between the incoming administration and local leaders karen bass and governor gavin newsom who have been heavily criticized for their handling of the situation that continues. finally back out here in marco u thousands of homes and buildings absolutely destroyed. crews working to clear debris. we are entering this period that will run through wednesday evening where they are expecting these whipping fire stoking winds on a widespread area. that is why people here in southern california are still

bracing with what could be -- could get a lot worse, guys, i will send it back to you. >> steve: it could, indeed. griff, you know, you are standing in front of somebody's burned out house. where is that person? i know that a lot of the people and i know you don't know the answer, but you know just in a general sense. that people throughout the l.a. area who have been burned out are trying to find some temporary quarters in what is one of the most expensive places to live on earth. i just read this morning that apparently a real estate agent put a rental house on the market just over the hill from the malibu fire. they got 1,000 applications for people to move into that one house. it just goes to show you people want to be somewhere? >> well, it's a great point, steve. because, you have got more than 150,000 people between here and over in palisades and altadena that have been evacuated and none of these people by the way.

this homeowner or anyone else cannot come in to see whether or not their homes have been damaged and to what extent because it's still sealed off for obvious reasons. it's too dangerous. we watched fire being put out literally right here in this property because the embers are still hot. and the people that had dream homes, imagine waking up to this looking out at the ocean every day thinking i have got it made. they have got nothing now and they don't know what they are going to do. there is frustration growing, steve, because we are one week removed now from when all this began with people wanting to get in here but the officials in yesterday's press conference begged residents please be patient when they were asked well, will it be days? weeks? months? they simply said it won't be days. they are asking for patience, steve. >> steve: yeah. >> brian: i know there's a couple things. karen bass has a petition going off the charts to get her to resign. >> ainsley: and with gavin newsom. >> brian: starting to move for a

recall of gavin newsom. now, the one thing that could help, griff, if there was a crackdown on gouging on rents and leases. it has to be market value. because i hear people are getting into bidding wars, paying ridiculous amount of money because they happen to be middle class or upper middle class to bid on condos in burbank and zuma beach and the money is almost criminal. these people have to have zero ethics. but that's what is happening. is that possible? griff griff you know, brian, when these fires -- if and when they are finally contained in that part of the story dies down, the price gouging in the insurance stories are going to be front and center. and i don't have an answer for you but i can tell you we have been -- i have been inundated literally around the clock with people talking about price gouging about rent, about property that is certainly going to be a thing have to deal with

it's interesting, you mentioned mayor bass. she put out an executive order late yesterday saying that she is going to try to help with getting homes rebuilt. we saw gavin newsom, the governor, saying that he is going to cut red tape to try and help people rebuild. but, when you talk about rebuilding, you're talking about homes that were literally built on the beach. and, in california, the regulations are among the most stringent. i'm talking to some of the crews out here over the past couple of days. they say they may not let people rebuild right here again. so, not only do you have the problem with the price, the insurance, you have to worry about whether or not the iconic, at least malibu, beautiful coast line along the pacific coast highway will even be allowed to be rebuilt. that's going to be want next phase and a very big part of the story. >> brian: thanks, griff. >> ainsley: might not allowed to be rebuilt? >> brian: the risk too much -- fire zone. after sandy they said if you are going to rebuild you have to jack up your house. pay 0% of it but elevate it.

i remember, too the guy who built high house had a small room in the bottom of the house. when i went up to the fire. and said are you going to be able to get to that road he? said i can't admit on that road. by the way nobody should have built on that road? i go what? sure enough, in the end you could see the cracks in the the foundation because it was slipping in the mountain when i went back and only had a shower stall left. >> lawrence: brian, that's part of the conversation, big headline yesterday was mike johnson talking about we want to do the aid but there are going to be conditions. part of the conditions is the roads. it's a about making sure the reservoirs are fixed and making sure they get rid of some of the brush. i think they have to. if you want to the federal government to come in, which they should. there needs to be some condition to prevent this from happening ever again. >> ainsley: the "l.a. times" owner dr. patrick she on endorsing the karen bass democratic mayor. it's important to choose leaders based on confidence rather than

their house that is still standing. one out of three on their street out of 22. only three stood -- are still standing but they are worried about looting now. >> steve: also worried about more fires. senior meteorologist janice dean tracking the winds in california and they continue at this hour. >> janice: yeah, particularly dangerous situation yet again for all of these areas that are dealing with wildfires. and we have a fourth wildfire that broke out last night. obviously zero percent containment. now, we do have relative humidity. that's going up. that's going to go down in the next few hours as the winds come out of the mountains. high pressure. and the counterclockwise winds that funnels through those valleys and canyons, dries the winds out. speed out there and potentially, could you know, make these wildfires spread rapidly. we could see explosive behavior, that we saw this time last week with winds in excess of 60 to 7. that's not 100 miles per hour. but it's still going to be very difficult for firefighters to get in there and contain these wildfires that continue to burn

in this particularly dangerous situation. so same setup that we saw on tuesday. and we didn't have any wildfires, now we have several that are burning, so elevated critical extreme for today through wednesday and then we will get break and also the air quality for people that have respiratory issues. this is going to be another day where people are told to stay inside because it could be very dangerous. all right, we will continue to enauto you up to date on all of the above. >> steve: janice my wife and i were talking yesterday air quality and reminiscent after 9/11. the people in lower manhattan who breathed that toxic stuff for weeks on end many of them developed all sorts of ailments. >> janice: all of these first responders it their job to be out there in the smoke. that's what we're concerned about not just short-term but long-term issues. >> brian: they know how to use the masks. >> janice: they got 80 to 100-pound equipment on their back that they have to do fighting fires. >> ainsley: the effects of these

fires will last a lifetime. >> brian: thanks so much, j.d. 12 minutes after the hour. senate confirmation hearings for president trump's cabinet picks begin in just a few hours. it starts with defense secretary nominee pete hegseth. >> ainsley: madeleine rivera is live in the capitol inside the hearing room ahead of today's proceedings. hey, maddy. >> madeleine: hi, guys, good morning. this is expected to be grueling for defense secretary pete hegseth even republicans have admitted just as much. here is how today is supposed to go. there are 27 members in the senate armed services committee. each of them get seven minutes to ask questions in a first round. that's more than three hours of questions if you do the math. and there could be more questions in a second round. democrats are expected to ask hegseth about his qualifications, his previous comments on diversity in the military. and the financial mismanagement of sexual assault allegations against him, which he has denied. still, in his opening statement; hegseth, a veteran with the army national guard. served in iraq and afghanistan

promises to bring back what he he said in part the defense department under donald trump will achieve peace through strength unlike the current administration police cars should play no part in military matters. some republicans have been touting hills military credentials. >> we don't need. a general from the pentagon. we have tried that: we need a drill sergeant, he will be ripped, he will be be demeaned. he will be talked about huddled with senate democrats last week to preview their strategy ahead of confirmation hearings. they see these as a chance to hold trump's nominees accountable for his agenda. axios reports schumer told democrats republicans spent four years attacking the democratic brand and we need to use the hearings to begin returning the favor. hegseth can only afford to lose

three republican votes if all democrats opposed him in the full senate. guys, back to you. >> brian: thanks, maddy. >> brian: hearing last night democrats were in full freakout mode. one of the people that thought he had something is blumenthal and he didn't. and he started freaking out that he didn't and they are going crazy because they definitely want to committees desperately get something on him. and last night, it seems like the pete hegseth camp was fielding all types of crazy calls wild inquiries from the media. they are desperate. this is their moment, democrats feel as though and you saw schumer say this was our chance to get the narrative back by beating up on pete. problem is he has already passed the fbi background checks. he passed this fbi background check. we already seen what you have. good luck with that we're not in the kavanaugh era anymore. >> lawrence: they want him to lose his cool. the problem is he has been doing this for 10 years. he has been going against the other side for years. he has testified on capitol hill when he was the president of

concerned veterans, america. he has been fighting on issues for a while. is he well read on the issues. he writes books about the issues. so good luck i don't think they are going to be successful today. i think you're going to see the side that we know and love about pete. and i think you are going to see that smile and that smirk. >> ainsley: we have worked with him and known him for 10 years. we have known his wife for almost 20 years. or at least i have. and they are both -- never both really strong christians. they have given their life to christ. he said on the podcast they there are two j's saved my life jennifer and jesus. and i have -- pete has always been appropriate. he has never been charged with anything. the military evaluations reveal that he is incredibly trented a wanted battle-proven as a leader. i know that chuck schumer apparently axios is reporting democrats to put pressure on pete, it will be interesting to watch this today.

but i'm telling you, the arrows are going to be thrown at him and they are not going to penetrate. >> steve: in speaking to some republican senators, they feel that as long as nothing new comes up during the hearings, he should be able to get every republican to vote for his confirmation on the committee and then it would be -- he would be confirmed later on. the big question is whether or not -- and keep in mind the democrats have revealed some of the playbook but haven't revealed everything. are there going to be surprise questions today, surprise questions? whatever? stay tuned. what we do know brian had a great interview with jason miller, one of the trump senior advisers a little while ago, and he outlined why pete is the right man at this time to lead the pentagon. jason said this. >> petting is going to kill them with kindness. he is a very smart and very telegenic, very presentable leader. there is someone who graduated from princeton and harvard.

this is someone who has served on the battlefield who knows what it is like to be shot at. he has led troops in battle. >> this is the type of leader that we need to head the department of defense. we have tried all the so-called experts for years and for decades. now we have someone who has actually been in the line of fire, and i think that's the type of perspective we had. he is really dazzled, i would say, most of the senators that he has met with. his grasp of the issues. his knowledge of the department of defense. his readiness to step in and lead as people believe in pete hegseth. they believe in president trump. let's get the woke out of military and get back to the warrior spirit. >> lawrence: i would just say this for the republicans that are going to be in this committee and the people that are going to be voting at large. if you voted for lloyd austin after this guy went mia, didn't let the president know, there is no excuse not to vote for pete. i think some of the pressure and the turn that you saw, pete did the work, number two, the voters calling their senators offices and letting them know, look, we want the full cabinet. this is not a matt gaetz

hunter biden out. now saying he was wrong to say that a quote from last night's report other presidents have pardoned family members in doing so none have taken the opportunity to malign the public servants at the department of justice based solely on false accusations. the biggest problem the special counsel weiss has with hunter is that he didn't pay $1.4 million in taxes over a five-year stretch. weiss says those are not instance cinconsequential viola. made money using last name. business opportunities such as a board seat at ukrainian industrial conglomerate burisma limited. joint venture with individuals associated with a chinese energy conglomerate. he negotiated and executed contracts and agreements that paid him millions of dollars for limited work. the hunter legal team is pushing back. late last night they told us mrs his proposal to resolve this

investigation in 2023 with a pair of misdemeanors and diverted gun charge recommended by career prosecutors. mr. weiss also failed to explain why he reneged on his own agreement. a reversal that came at the 11th hour in court as he faced blistering attacks from republican and then filing unprecedented charges with someone with no aggravated gun charges paid his taxes in full years before the charges were filed. president biden came here to the white house four years to the day promising to restore faith in institutions. now this special counsel is saying that president biden's actions have undermined faith in institutions. back to you. >> steve: peter, nobody asked joe biden more about hunter than you. and david weiss went after joe biden saying, you know what? you made up a bunch of baseless allegations and suggestions about your son. what are you doing? >> peter: yes. and the answer was always that joe biden didn't know anything about his son's overseas

emergency massachusetts shelter that set up for families. he doesn't have a family there. the governor is finally answering calls to make a change ordering background checks and inspections of all state run shelters. but only after a number of incidents. joining us right now is massachusetts republican party chair amy carnivally. amy, good morning to you. >> good morning. great to be with you. >> steve: this guy had a gun and fentanyl and stuff like that in a shelter for families. didn't anybody go hey, where is that guy's family? >> it's clear that the governor in mayor in massachusetts have no idea who is staying in these shelters. republicans have warned for two years now that there is lack of oversight accountability in these shelters and we have no idea who is staying there. we know that there our local law enforcement have been answering frequent reports, criminal reports and calls to these

incident last february of a gun and cocaine and bullets being found in a hotel room. this was somebody that was processed legally, a migrant. and so the governor really, you know, over 1,000 incidents in the last 20 months the state republican party found through their freedom of information act request. criminal incidents in these shelters. and so the governor and her administration should have known they have the data that these incidents are hang. and putting our residents and our communities at risk. and, in fact, rivera had a community meeting last night and really talked about -- you mentioned the possible gang tie. and that was a point of discussion at this community meeting a real concern bringing gangs into our state as well. >> steve: that's just terrible. and the whole thing is, this was not a migrant shelter. this was a shelter for residents of massachusetts with families and all those rules were broken.
