to begin any day now. we will bring you any headlines out of that book first, an update from the ground. >> jonathan hunt is live, the site of the largest fires. >> it is deceptively beautiful here. it illustrates why a lot of people thought of this community as paradise here on earth. a week ago it turned into hell on earth and this destruction was brought across so much across the pacific palisades, community that is largely destroyed. the santa ana wind continues to blow. as you pan out from here, come
11:03 am
over to the santa monica mountains. as you look up there, it swept down the canyon destroying so much in its path are in the wind warnings remain in effect. the dangerous situation is in effect until noon tomorrow. nobody is letting down their guard at this point. everyone wants to know how this fire started in one possibility is it was a member from a previous buyer. a neighbor went out and said there was a fire.
11:04 am
it is believed it was started by people using fireworks on new year's eve. that is an almost the exact location where last week's devastating flames took hold. it is a warning as you watch the wind come through again. the embers that are everywhere, here in the palisade. those can be picked up by significant wind and restart a fire. that is why nobody is letting down their guard.
11:05 am
>> the fire is demolished. barely a home left standing. our next guest's quick thinking saved his home. he bought some cheap sprinklers. the solo is an army veteran. there are a lot of people who tried to do the same thing, with garden hoses and novels but the water evaporated quickly. how did you manage to save yo yours? >> i was able to get a bigger volume of water up there.

11:07 am
to evacuate, set up a system so i could evacuate so i wouldn't have to stand there and fight the flames. came back a second day in the water had turned off so i did the same thing for buckets of water and my buddy helped me resoak the area. there were 14 homes beneath us. we could not walk away from that. the homes above us, my friend's house, two friends, their houses were just beyond and lost those. it was a good idea. i wish i could've done more, but we did what we could. i had to get out of there. because i was able to get out and not stay there, i was able to get down the hill. i got caught at sunset boulevard. i was able to get out of that situation, people work abandoning cars right in front of me.
11:08 am
we were able to get out and gets our family. it was down to the second but it was reminiscent of afghanistan. it was a war zone. >> i remember going through -- and the height of the iraq war and that was dangerous but seeing what these folks went through trying to escape the flames. nobody was shooting at them but it looked as dangerous. did i hear you correctly? good your watering down act as a firing break? >> you can see the flames approached the home and the water line, you can see where it stopped and see where it went up the hill and attack the other homes. yes, that is correct.
11:09 am
>> i have seen devastation like this before, never experienced that myself and obviously your home survive. this happens sometimes when you are in a firefight, there is this idea of survivor's guilt. i know you say you wish you could have done more but you did save homes below you on the fire line. what do you say to your neighbors? do you think you will be them again? you think people will rebuild and leave? >> i am still talking to my neighbors every day. the firefighting is still going on. we are part of the american legion post. we are there to communicate with our neighbors to keep them
11:10 am
together. we need money and supplies. what we need now is each other, i hate to say this, we spent four hours dumping buckets of water to resaturate. we stopped the american legion post, the light turned on. you looked around and you thought burned out churches, the schools my 10-year-old daughter school across the street gone. you saw all this and in the midst of it is this brand-new american legion building. we are needed. this is what we do. it was my duty. i am built for this. i qualified as a medic. my people need me.
11:11 am
you know when the civilian walk then, i was trained and prepared for this. i knew what i was getting into. these people are not ready for this. not as was 700 vets -- they called me first. they are doing great job taking care of security and safety. when the people come back, i hope we continue to fight for them, bring them together and bring them services. fema and red cross. our ability is standing.
