jay leno is helping heroes fighting the california wildfires peer the iconic american entertainer is right here on your world but first... critical confirmation hearings taking place on capitol hill and a critical cease-fire deal now in place in the middle east. israel and hamas reached an agreement after breakthrough talks and ohio the big question this hour what will happen with hostages and we'll this deal hold clean we will speak to senate foreign relations committee members on the fallout from all of it. welcome everyone i'm sandra smith and this is your world. we will take you first to tel aviv where we have the latest from there with trey yingst. >> good afternoon sandra forges six to seven days into the war between israel and hamas is cease-fire agreement has been reached. a court -- according to the qatari foreign ministry this sunday it will go into effect. at which point hostages will begin to come out of gaza.

phase one will last for 41 days and see a total of 33 hostages released from hamas captivity, some of them are alive and others are dead. today in the streets of tel aviv demonstrators celebrating with mixed emotions understanding that in response to this deal the israelis will have to give up hundreds of palestinian prisoners and some of which convicted of murder. inside the gaza strip also sees a celebration i was been speaking with civilians there who said they have mixed feelings about the agreement they are happy over but also questionable images with hamas gunmen in the streets of gaza's major population centers and indication that this group is not defeated inside gaza today president biden maid remarks about the palestinian people saying they'd be able to have a future without hamas in control. that doesn't match with the reality on the ground inside the gaza strip and minutes ago sirens were sounding in southern

thank you so much for joining us. first please tell us do you believe this deal will hold? >> sori? >> sandra: do you think this deal will hold? >> i think the beginning we will have to weight and see. hamas will try to do different tricks and tried to trick israel one way are another. israeli is very worried about hamas getting stronger and about the well-being of hostages and about what would be the next phase after 33 hostages return and we must win decisively against hamas eradicate them eventually bring back all the hostages and create new reality in gaza. >> obviously that's a big question at this hour what will happen with hostages and what the phases really look like. >> so we are talking about an

initial deal 33 hostages that will be released in the next month and a half but this is out of almost 100 hostages. the big question is what will happen with the other hostages. it's not clear and it's going to be negotiated and i think both israel and the upcoming administration we'll have to put a lot of pressure on hamas, on keturah, on egypt to really make sure that all the hostages are returned to israel. >> sandra: obviously that is the most important thing at this point getting hostages home. what can you tell us about what was happening behind the scenes and what still happening behind the scenes with these negotiations there are many saying president biden said earlier that this is the deal he laid out a long time ago and it's just now happening.

he said this is the blueprint he laid out for a deal and now it is happening. but what changed? why is it happening no? >> so this deal has been on the table since may last year and hamas opposed to completely why? there is no real pressure on hamas. israel wanted to stop some but administration wouldn't let us do that. israel had no major leverage on them. one thing israel defeated hezbollah and hezbollah cannot support any more. hamas syria fell, israel is weaker but the big change is president trumps threat. once he is threatening them there will be that from the beginning says the situation and i think if they don't get the

deal now the chances of getting a good deal for them would be very low. therefore they remain on assessment and are inclined to do the deal thinking they will maximize what they can get now and not wait to see what needs. >> we really appreciate you joining us thank you very much assert. >> my pleasure. >> sandra: my next assess on the foreign relations committee joining us now montana republican steve daines. senator thank you for being here. first to want to get your thoughts on what you just heard there on why this is happening now. >> yeah, this is no coincidence. rimmer or president trump said in early december there will be held to pay if these hostages are released by the time he is inaugurated peer we are five days away from president trump's inauguration, it's another example of peace through strength. i give credit to prime minister si3namarie and his maximum pressure campaign against hamas and hezbollah then you tick president trump the footsteps

had 12 years in the foreign relations committee and understands foreign policy as anybody in the u.s. senate. he has done a great job today, very proud of him. also pam bondi has done a great job and chris write a great job for the national energy resource committee. again president trump bring all-star candidates to being -- be in his candidate. it has to live the people's spirit. >> taking it back to the top story we lead with and tying it into the confirmation hearing senator president biden said today while speaking live from the white house that this will be the new administrations deal to implement. obviously this cease-fire deal that was just announced and agreed to. so what does it look like as the steam comes together? >> this is a team that has moral clarity particularly on the issue of israel and iran. we don't have to stutter about our support for israel knowing who the good guys are into the

bad guys are. there are a lot of parallels with what happened in 1980 president reagan was elected it was 1981 win the 53 u.s. hostages american hostages in iran were released after president reagan took office. you kind of see this coming again and in this case its an iranian terror proxy hamas holding both americans and israelis hostage it's kind of remarkable history repeats itself you bring a new leader to the world stage the world order is starting to shift and president trump still has five days before he is sworn into office. >> how this will carry out will tell us a lot about what the next four years will look like. how do you see relations in the middle east and obviously the fire agreement as these phases are carried out what do our relations look like, relationships look like going forward? >> while i'm optimistic you are number 1 president trump left office he had the abraham accords one of the great breakthroughs in the middle east restoring peace to the

mountains but really they're a scorched earth. we were up there yesterday and the day before, investigators in and around these hills at least one home-video appears to show the eaton fire starting near this canyon in or around an electric transformer. lawsuits have been filed against socal edison claim is responsible because it didn't shut off electricity during the historic wind event. it says is reviewing the complaints. i talked with a man whose home is damaged by the wins but survived the fire he said he used a hose on water from his pool. he remained inside this quiet burnout fire zone over the past week to protect his neigh neighborhood. >> that was our original goal win he stayed up here was to be a presence and hold out your phone so everybody knows you are looking. >> reporter: now the l.a. county sheriff today says they have now arrested 44 people for fire related crimes such as

you pull in out of the hospital area here men intense sleeping over their men and women doing things over here. they're coordinating with helicopters and it's a really military operation on the biggest scale its pretty amazing to watch. >> sandra: you're still wearing the same shirt on your back jay you're out there you're cooking and helping serve meals trying to brighten their day as they are still out there trying to fight these fires. why was it so important for you to get out there and do this? >> first of all i kind of where the same should every day so that's not really in -- you know, you all do what you can do. if i can tell jokes and raise money for a cause that's fine i'm toshio talk to these guys and every guy that looks like the guy in the paper towel ad high jay they shake your hand how i broke my hand. and these are like men men it makes me laugh. what can i do i like the cook in

los angeles southern california your beautiful home, your car garage, how are you doing? >> i'm fine. i'm fine dori about me. yeah, you see these people that of lost everything, you know, literally i came around a corner open to cars that were there people don't realize these winds are going 70 mph it's like a blowtorch. got out of their cars and ran because the cursor literally melting in sunset boulevard. it looks like a movie. it's a serial. >> sandra: what do you think when you think of rebuilding los angeles? >> we will rebuild it but the sense of community packets that it takes something like this to bring everybody together but sometimes that's what it takes. you try to look for this over lining in these situations and meet friends and neighbors, your two houses over i am so-and-so. a lot of the meeting for the first time. a lot of them are thinking other people saving their pets and

looking live at southern israel and gaza hours after the hostage and cease-fire deal has been reached. let's get to the national security communications advisor john kirby on how the u.s. help to get to this point. good to have you on the program today. please give us your updated as we now see the latest update is benjamin netanyahu the prime minister of israel has now spoken to both president-elect trump and president biden. >> that's right. the president had a conversation with the prime minister a little bit ago to start working on implementation because now is the hard work of getting the deal in place. noodle start this weekend than there will be a six-week phase for phase one then we are off to the races to try to get phase two and phase three trying to

get all the hostages back home with their families and of course and the war. a lot of coordination today this is a very good day not just for the united states but of course for all those hostage families that have been living with such uncertainty and fear and anxiety and of course a big day for those hostages that will bill to get back home with their families. >> sandra: can you tell us about the sensitivity of the deal and whether or not the american public watching this play out in the world really can have confidence this will go all the way through. >> we are confident and the president said so today that this will be implement it. that doesn't mean there is not hard work ahead which is why we were so fixed on making sure mr. what cough and the incoming trump team were a part and parcel with negotiations and talks all along because they are going to have to know do the work of help implementing that and is going to be a lot of hard work to keep all the commitments made over in coming days and weeks but i'm a clinician or

code it it can be difficult at times be a but the big hurdle has been overcome and that's getting the deal getting inked getting it in place and hopefully come this weekend we will start his season families be reunited. >> and you give us some color about what those negotiations were like and your involvement of the incoming chemistry in an president-elect steam you just mention what cough gives the middle east envoy obviously how did those negotiations go and what was it like working with the two teams? >> you know, the president said it best today we worked on this as one team as the american people would expect us to do. nobody's worried here nobody's worried in america or the hostages are certainly not worried about who gets credit we worked on this as a team. it was the negotiation that started this in administration certainly deal the president laid forward in may and go forward over the finish line but was really critical. the president made it clear to us at the national security team that we needed to make sure the

trump team in particular mr. what cough or part and parcel and fully invested in everything we were doing because they were going to own it when they left office. and he and rhett talked multiple times a day over the last week are so as we were getting to the fine details and trying to get over the finish line and mr. what cough himself credited the work he was able to enjoy by working with us but the bottom line was getting the deal and giving the hostages home getting the war to end and both president-elect trump and certainly president biden shared that goal and made sure there are teams share the outcome. >> it sounds like you're giving president-elect steam a lot of credit for getting this over the finish line. >> were not focused much on the credit again as the president said we approach this as one team a team of americans to try to get americans back home with their families and that's what matters think there's plenty of credit to go around not just

here in the united states sandra, egypt, qatar, president -- trim prime minister benjamin netanyahu. what matters most is getting those hostages home. >> sandra: so many over the world have been praying for these hostages to come home and we know president-elect trump laid down a redline all will break loose if we don't get them home by the day he takes office. talk about phase one as you are saying its now up to the incoming administration to implement the details of this plan. take us through phase one and what this looks like and getting hostages home. >> phase one is critical obviously the first one we are talking about six weeks and you will start seeing hopefully as soon as this weekend the most at risk hostages coming out. women, elderly, those who are ill or injured coming out in these first groups. also as we saw before you will see an exchange of political prisoners israel is holding that hamas wants back and will also start to be returned. you will have an exchange there but the hostages come back and

is those most at risk. the second thing you will see is an immediate cease-fire. the bombing will stop the fighting will stop and that will bring an amazing amount of relief to the people of gaza to continue to fall victim to the conflict itself. the third thing you will see in the first weeks is a dramatic surge in humanitarian assistance to the people of gaza who are in such desperate need for. there will be concerned to get them food water and medicine all the things they need to assist and survive. the last thing i will say about the six weeks and this is a really important point, as we work on those implementing details, the two sides i'm sure the u.s. will be involved in this will start the work on negotiations to get to phase two because that means a withdrawal of israeli forces from gaza and a further exchange of more hostages in this case it will be males of military age and those

who are members of the idf. so there is a whole other set of exchanges that have to have to happen in phase two but in phase one the teams are working to get to phase two. >> just absolute emotion all over the world we've seen those live pictures especially in tel aviv as we anticipate the transfers to begin and we all pray that will be the case. if i could further ask you to expand on what changed maybe it's a different way to ask the question but i will let you answer perhaps again are differently, we go back to may and we saw president biden lay out the details as referenced today that was certainly the case and certainly happened but we are days from the incoming administration taking office and people may be asking themselves what did change, was at the news conference last week where the president laid out the red line and that there will be held to pay if these hostages aren't home by inauguration day. >> what really led to where we got to was what really changed

senator, thank you very much. we heard you in the hallway a short time ago when asked about trump getting credit for getting this deal over the finish line you said you don't believe in coincidences. so was it ultimately his threat that all would break loose if the deal did not get done if the hostages didn't come home? >> i know there have been negotiations for a long time but the fact is this is now being done just on the eve of president trump being sworn into office strikes me that he had some impact on that. i know the biden administration has been wanting to get this done. 33 hostages released over a period of time. a cease-fire, may be, but frankly i don't particularly trust hamas or their sponsor, iran, they are ideologically committed to the extermination of israel. if they had laid down their

weapons, this would be over, if israel lay down its weapons there would be no more israel. >> sandra: either way, ultimately it is about bring those hostages home, first and foremost, part of phase one of the steel. john kirby a moment ago talking about how sensitive and challenging this will be even though a deal has been reached, so are you optimistic? >> well, i am optimistic because it's always good to bring the hostages home. i'm not exactly sure how many more hostages still exist there. and unfortunately this is sort of a darned if you do, danged if you don't situation because this also has an incentive for hamas to get more hostages, if they know they can get something for it. so it is a mixed bag. but i think we should be happy that at least 33 of those hostages are going to be returning home. >> sandra: we will be watching all of it. meanwhile, confirmation hearings on hill today, how did they go?

>> well, i was in three of them this morning. the attorney general nominee pam bondi, john ratcliffe for the director of cia, and that of course, my friend, marco rubio, secretary of state. i am confident each of them will be confirmed and i hope the other paper delays and background check delays by the fbi will be fixed because, frankly, president trump's entitled his team after he takes his hand off the bible on january the 20th. >> sandra: got it. so you are confident all three picks will go through? >> i am. >> sandra: that's big news. looking at yesterday and pete hegseth how are you feeling there? >> well, i think, i have known pete a long time, since he started out years ago coming up on the hill to advocate for veterans. and i think a lot of pete. i know he has had some things in

>> well, the law is that they either need to divest, or they need to be banned. so this isn't an outright ban, this is a requirement that the chinese communist party, that is basically spying on the american people, using their phones, this is unwitting, obviously, but 180 million at last count americans were using this app that is being used by the chinese communist party and the people's republic of china, so if they want to sell it to anybody who is not part of the chinese communist party, that's fine, but i think president trump, my impression is he thought he could make a deal. that's who he is, what he does. and i am certainly not opposed to that, as long as it is out of the hands of the chinese communist party. >> sandra: yeah, just reading through the details here, suspend the tiktok sale or banned law for 60-90 days
